Exfoliating microbeads Unless you are using walnut or apricot exfoliating scrub, it is a waste! Most of the third-party contractors are including polyethylene – a plastic substance for creating scrubbing beads. These beads are different from organic products and provide you the illusion of natural exfoliation while contaminating our water bodies. This is just not an end of contamination! BHA and BHT BHA and BHT are among popular preservatives used by cosmetic manufacturers for makeup and moisturizing products. Both the ingredients are suspected hormone disruptors and cause environmental pollution. Triclosan Most of the antibacterial products like hand cleansers and sanitizers, detergents, and deodorants have triclosan. This ingredient is linked to an increase in antibiotic resistant organisms that cause deadly infections. When triclosan is rinsed and travelled through the sink, it can alter the biochemistry of fish, amphibians, and aquatic plants. It doesn’t degrade marine quickly, but also react with otherchemicals in waterways to develop dioxins. Synthetic fragrance There is hardly any cosmetic without fragrance. Manufacturers use a blend of chemicals to prepare synthetic fragrances and what’s worse is they don’t need to reveal them due to “trade secret” laws. Synthetic fragrances are added to different formulations of perfumes, shampoos, cleansers, creams, soaps, sunscreens, moisturizers, etc. These fragrances are harmful to marine environment. Even wastewater plants are unable to break them down and thus, these ingredients slip down to the rivers and oceans through sewage discharge. Siloxanes Silicones or siloxanes are easily found in anti-aging products, lotions, creams, hair care products, etc. Silicone adversely affects the marine life. Moreover, when these affected fishes are eaten up by the human, silicon enters to human body and contaminates our digestive system. Contract cosmetic manufacturers advise brands not to use these ingredients in their formulation to contribute to environment. And if you know more of such ingredients that are threatening our planet, let us know. Let’s spread out the word across the globe and make a better environment for living.
