Thinking Day On Saturday 25th February 10 packs from across Folkestone and Hythe District came together to celebrate Thinking Day. Thinking Day, also known as Founder’s Day celebrates the birthday of the Founder of The Scout movement, Lord Robert Bayden-Powell. Bayden-Powell held a trial camp on Brownsea Island, Dorset in 1907 which was so successful that he wrote a book, Scouting for Boys so that anyone could take part in these adventures. The success of this book has led to 28 million members joining the Scout Movement in over 200 countries and territories. Cub Scouts from Folkestone and Hythe celebrated Thinking Day by learning about different countries and their cultures. Every pack from the district was invited to choose a country and run activities based on these, some of which included: boomerang decorating for Australia and making Olympic themed items for Greece. Amelia, a Cub Scout from 3rd Hawkinge commented on the event saying “My favorite base was Finland where we played a game and learnt that everything in a hotel was made from ice, even the knife and fork! In Australia I found out that penguins lived in Sydney Harbor.” Charlotte also from 3rd Hawkinge said that her favorite base was India because she got to try the various foods available. Folkestone and Hythe District run the event annually, with 50 Cub Scouts taking part from different parts of the district. This year the event was held at Pent Valley Leisure Centre, after the school kindly donated its use as part of a relationship with one of the Scout Groups. Alan Couchman-Sawyer spokesperson for the Scout District said “The event was highly successful, it is important for the Cubs to remember who started Scouting and that they are part of a world-wide organization. Scouting offers young people the chance to do International activities and this is just one way that Cubs can get involved at a younger age.”

Jamboree On The Trail

Holy Trinity Coffee Morning

Jamboree on the trail is an international adventure which involves everyone in scouting from Beavers through to Leaders. Jamboree on the trail or JOTT is where all the countries participating hold a hike on the same Saturday in May which this year is being held on Saturday May 12th. 3rd Hawkinge and 1st Hythe are both taking part in this international adventure, it is a good way for fundraising and if you book in time you can also get a special badge for taking part. JOTT also allows everyone in the group to get their staged hikes away badge, well worth looking into. We will have coverage of all the JOTT events on our website and in the next edition of the magazine.

Holy Trinity Cub Scouts are celebrating 30 years since they were founded. To celebrate we are organising a coffee morning and we are inviting everyone to join us for coffee on Saturday 21st April 2012 (10.00 -12.30) , with cakes and soft drinks. There will be a raffle to raise some funds for camp and equipment. So if you have nothing else that's pressing come and join us.

If you are doing a hike then please let us know! For more information please email: press@folkestoneandhythescouts.org.uk If you would like more information about JOTT then you can visit their website: www.jott.org

Saltwood Cubs’ Community Spirit Members of 1st Saltwood Cubs have been getting involved in their community over the last few months. They have helped raise funds for Help the Heroes, a charity which helps injured servicemen and women back into recovery. Cubs have also helped with Lent lunches in their local community. Cubs helped raise the money for Help the Heroes by running two sleepovers at their headquarters, money raised during the events went to the charity. The cubs came up with the fundraising ideas and chose the charity that they wanted to support.

Come Dine With Us Cubs from Hythe Sea decided that they would like to do their chefs badge. On Saturday 10th March, 4 cubs from the pack prepared and made their own meal which they invited special guests to attend. It was a long day for the cubs; they started at 12pm by preparing vegetables for the dinner and making their own bread. They then flavoured the chicken breast and roasted the chicken in the oven. Whilst the chicken was cooking, the cubs decided to make table decorations and menus for the evening meal. Afterwards they prepared the dessert which was an apple crumble which the cubs made on their own! Just before the guests started arriving the cubs laid the table and dressed in their smart outfits to welcome the guests. The guests were John Wren (Group Scout Leader for 1st Hythe) and John Schoner (Former Group Scout Leader of 1st Hythe) they brought along their partners for the three-course meal. The meal was very successful, then came the washing up. Surprisingly there were not too many groans, even though it was late in the evening. All four cubs achieved their badge with flying colours!

Scout Community Week is the modern-day take on Job Week which was dropped due to health and safety. Scout Community week is organised fundraising and supporting your local community, last year we trialled the pilot scheme of Scout Community Week and this year it has been rolled out nation-wide. As some of you might remember, last year we held a treasure hunt and several groups did their own individual activities. 1st Lyminge Beavers and Cubs took part in a litter picking session around the village which they are going to be doing again this year. 1st Hythe and 3rd Hawkinge came together for a fun event at the History Resource Centre in Folkestone. This year, we hope to impress the rest of the area and showcase Folkestone and Hythe Scouts. We need your help to do this: if you are able to run a project, do sponsored walks or you know someone who could do with our help then please contact us. This is a big media event and will help with recruitment of young people but most importantly adults! If you are able to help then please let us know what you are doing at our usual address or contact Su Shaw (District Commissioner) if you are able to give us a project to do. info@folkestonehythescouts.org

Do It Yourself Scouts from 1st Hythe Scout Group were one of the first troops to join forces with B&Q to do their DIY badge. The Park Farm branch of the famous DIY store allowed the young people to do a treasure hunt on their evening. Scouts were asked a series of questions which the answers could be found somewhere in the store. Once they had finished the treasure hunt, staff at B&Q presented the scouts with tape measures (the treasure). On the weekend the scouts were tested for a number of skills that they had been taught previously. These included wiring a plug and plumbing. Eventually the scouts received their badges for their hard work.

For more information about Scout Community Week please visit the website www.scouts.org.uk/do1thing

Any Scout Group interested in holding activities at B&Q should contact the Park Farm branch or see them in store. As an official partner it is a great way to spend an evening!

The Great Egg Race is a widely used challenge in Scouting which made its fame when the BBC produced a programme with the same name and hosted by Professor Heinz Wolff. The TV programme saw teams of challengers taking part to make eggs do something, such as move from one table to another or throw them off a cliff and not break when they reach the bottom. The same principal is used in the Scout version, although slightly less technical. 4 teams competed in The Great Egg Race which was hosted by the District in March. The teams were competing to make a vehicle that would transport an egg 10m safely without breaking it. They did not have many materials to work with; the vehicle had to be self-moving and not pushed. Teams were given half an hour to plan their designs and then 2 hours to build it. They were given: Various size cotton reels, straws, wires, pins, sticky tape, rubber bands, paper clips, cardboard and glue in which to fabricate their designs. Two teams couldn’t work out a way to move the vehicle and others tried several attempts to move but did not work out. After refreshments the Scouts were eager to find out who had won, the winning team was a composite team with 1 scout from 11th Folkestone, 1st Cheriton and Holy Trinity. Their design was the only one that moved, however the other scouts all had fun building their designs.

It’s Cold Outside This year’s winter was extremely cold and even two meetings across the district were postponed because of the foul weather. However this did not stop young people from the district braving the weather at winter camps, several groups from the district took part in winter surivival camps, whether it was at Gilwell Park or Ross Wood the young people had a great time. Young people from Holy Trinity were not expecting to go on camp because of the bad weather and not being able to open the winter storage unit at Rosswood, however leaders frantically called with short notice asking for indoor accommodation campsites. Wayland campsite in Bromely were happy for the scouts to stay, so the camp was back on! The camp was very successful with a trip to a Royal Airforce chapel, playing wide games and holding a scouts own. The forum showed that the 7 young people who attended the camp were excited enough to want to attend a longer summer camp. Part of the camp was aimed at achieving the naturalist badge and the outdoor and creative challenges; they also practiced their pioneering skills ready to complete a project that they were given. They eventually came home exhausted but enthusiastic about the skills and adventures they had been on.

We have created this really useful page so that you know about all the forthcoming events in the district and in your local area. Although we have tried to list all local events on here, we may not have covered them all. If you know events not listed then please contact us and we can add it to our website and in the next edition. If an event asks for feedback then please mention us to them!

Cubs Showcase Team Work

Adult Award Winners

Cubs from across the district came together at the end of March to compete in the Whittingstall cup challenge. The aim of the challenge is to take part in a number of different activities which require teamwork and a variety of skills and knowledge. Some of the activities that cubs took part in included a puzzle solving exercise and scent identification. Cubs were awarded points on how well they worked as a team; they also achieved points for correct answers on the activity.

During our St. Georges Day service there will be several awards presented to adults for their hard work and dedication, they are as follows:

1st Saltwood were the winners of the cup with 3rd Hawkinge runners up; both packs will represent Folkestone and Hythe at the county quiz which is being held at Lower Grange Farm. We wish both teams the best of luck and hope that they do their best. The challenge is being held in May.
