Barnet Judo Club welcome Olympic silver medallist Ray Stevens Barnet Judo Club were pleased to receive a special guest during September when Olympic silver medallist Ray Stevens attended a private session with club members only. Ray’s expertise as both an international competitor and as a first class coach is without compare and the whole session was dedicated to groundwork, where some simple and some not so simple techniques were run through and practised. Ray’s friendly character and excellent teaching style ensured that everybody who attended had a great time as well as learning a considerable amount.
Although 4 hours of continual Judo is quite hard going for some members, the time flew by, and before they knew it, they were at the end of the workshop and a question and answer session awaited. During this closing session everybody had the opportunity to ask about any Judo techniques or related subject. Earlier in the day, Barnet Judo Club Sensei Jorge, had asked if Ray could show some versions of Sangaku jime (Jorge’s favoured technique). This was greeted
with favourable response and the members all engaged in practising different versions of the strangle. The people who attended the workshop, varied in age grade and experience, but all had a great time and learned a lot of good judo.
Barnet Judo Club intend to run similar workshops in the future, so if you missed out this time make sure that you book early for the next one. Look out for details in eaW!

The key changes in the revised paperwork features a new transport plan which aims to reduce the percentage of fans traveling by car to 36 per cent. Sarries also want to run a matchday coach service from towns across Hertfordshire offering six routes to and from the stadium. There will be a regular doubledecker match day shuttle service connecting Edgware, Mill Hill Broadway and Mill Hill East stations to Copthall. The Premiership champions have also included the provision of a variety of match day parking schemes that will de determined by local residents. Other changes include a modified design, featuring wood, trees and greenery that will soften the visual impact of
the East stand and an integrated management plan. Sarries chairman Nigel Wray said: “We have listened and we have learned, and we are now putting forward an even better version of what is a really exciting plan to create a unique community sports hub in the heart of north London, offering fantastic benefits to tens of thousands of people, and minimising disruption to residents.” “Our basic concept remains the same – to invest in the creation of a compact, well-equipped stadium to be used for community sport on 340 days of the year, club and elite athletics and a maximum 16 days of Premiership rugby. We are determined to advocate proposals that enjoy widespread public support, that creates a home for the awardwinning Saracens foundation and a genuine community asset, and that enables our club’s return home to the heart of north London.”

But most of all she is able to say that she has made a difference to the lives of all the children she has cared for.
“I wanted to use my skills to make a difference but I was concerned how I would be able to afford such a change with bills to pay etc. I suppose I could have fallen back on private therapy work but I was determined that I could make this work, and Barnet ensured this by offering me, as a foster carer, generous allowances and fees.”
“I am reminded daily why I do this job. When the kids give me a hug and tell me spontaneously that they like living here; when I use my skills to develop a child’s self-esteem, giving them the confidence to say what’s wrong; by being a significant part of the team that helps a child; when I have one of those ‘nice moments’ like realising the house is filled with laughter, singing and relaxed children and when I see children move on positively.”

in Barnet School Games Organisers New to the BPSS is The School Games. This is a new and exciting way for all children to get involved in competitive school sport. There are three key elements to the School Games at all levels: Getting everyone involved - No matter what their experience, talent, ability or disability, the School Games will be open to all children. With competitions available at intra-school, inter-school and county/area level, there is a place for everyone. The School Games is also designed to complement existing initiatives in your school which encourage a wide range of children to participate in sport - such as Change4Life Sports Clubs. The competition ladder - Children should be able to progress in competitive school sport and the School Games provides the connectivity to achieve this. It provides opportunities for children to start off in intra-school competitions and then progress to the next level to take part in inter-school competitions. From there, if a team or individual qualifies, the next step is competing at a county/area level at a School Games Festival. At this point young athletes may be recognised by National Governing Bodies of Sport and could go on to compete at Level 4 - the national multisport event.

Using the excitement of sport and London 2012 - The School Games is a new approach to school sport designed to motivate and enthuse all children and young people. Using the unique power and energy of London 2012, now is the time to inspire everyone to take part! Our children expect and deserve the best - this means an approach to competitive school sport that is exciting, well presented, offers a wide variety of sports and which gives other opportunities for pupils to get involved through cultural activities, organisation, officiating or volunteering. Barnet has 3 School Games Organisers new to post. For more information on the Games and to contact the School Organisers, please visit our website.

What’s coming up at Bodens? At Bodens performing arts school, students aged as young as 3 right up to their final year before departing for university are currently involved in three great new projects. This October, 50 children will bring Kenneth Grahame’s beautiful novel ‘Wind In The Willows’ to the stage in the Tony Boden Theatre in the form of the Broadway musical written by William Perry and Roger McGough. Rehearsals are well underway, many of which have taken place close by in the woods of Oakhill Park to help the children’s imaginations and characters grow in the surroundings of their very own Wild Wood. At the end of last term the students were visited by lots of real animals to help them develop their movement, studying the animals that they are to play. Director Adam Boden and Composer Marc Folan have just finished work on their brand new musical based on the Frances Hodgson-Burnett book ‘A Little Princess’ to be performed at The Wyllyotts Theatre next February. Auditions took place earlier this year for the main cast of Seminary girls and the leading roles of
Sara, Becky, Ermengarde and Lavinia. The first single from the production ‘If I Was A Real Princess’ is currently available to download on iTunes. The entire cast recording is due to be released in January of next year. Every year, The National Theatre commissions ten plays by British and international writers, exploring stories from around the world to inspire young theatre companies across the UK. Bodens are excited and inspired that their Youth Theatre has been selected as one of the passionate and committed young theatre companies to take up the challenge of staging the scripts. Participants will get the chance to perform both in The Tony Boden Theatre and at a festival with other Connections companies. One production of each script will be showcased at the National Theatre in London. Senior students have already begun work-shopping five of the ten scripts and must choose their favourite 3 plays before the end of September. You can watch behind the scenes footage and buy tickets for nay of these productions at www.bodens.co.
