Give It A Go 2012 Comes to North London Are you feeling inspired to be more active in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games? Would you like to try a new sport or re-discover a sport you once loved? Give it a Go 2012 is an exciting opportunity to try a wide range of different sports and activities across Barnet, Haringey, Enfield and Waltham Forest for FREE in February and March this year. Over 70 different sports clubs will be opening their doors for free to new participants between the 13th February and the 31st March and there are activities on offer to suit all ages and abilities. Activities on offer so far range from football, rugby and tennis to street dance, judo and athletics.
Skolars Rugby Club is a local club who are excited to be offering free taster sessions for juniors and adults during February and March as part of Give it a Go 2012. Community Manager, Paul Thorman said: ‘As a local club this is a great opportunity for us to increase our members and help get local residents active. Sport is a great way to wind down, socialise and keep fit. People often have reservations about what a sport or activity is like from what they have seen or heard, not what they have experienced themselves. Give it a Go 2012 has given us an opportunity to provide these free taster sessions and hopefully give people that first hand experience which we are sure will be an enjoyable one.’
This unique project has been funded through via the FreeSport strand of the Mayors Sport Legacy programme and has been coordinated by PROACTIVE North London alongside the four North London Sport Development Teams at Enfield, Haringey, Waltham Forest and Barnet Council. PRO-ACTIVE North London Director, Adrian Ledbury, was full of praise to the Greater London Authority for funding the project: ‘It’s great to see the Mayors Office continuing their pledge to support and sustain community sport in the capital by funding Give it a Go 2012 in North London. We have a real opportunity to leave a lasting community sports legacy for London post Olympic games
2012
and we are very lucky to have the support of Mayor in trying to achieve this task’. With less than 200 days until the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, this is the perfect opportunity for families, workplaces and friends to be part of the build up and legacy of the 2012 Games as well as becoming more active in their local community. A new family coffee shop with a twist! I have always wanted to run my own business, and when I was made redundant from my position in Children’s Centres last year, I decided the time was now. I know that I believe in Children’s Centre’s completely (and still do I hasten to add), however I also realise that there is a real lack of somewhere for families to go and relax with their children, and their adult friends. Enter Coffee & Twist – the coffee shop with
a twist, really catering for those families who want to engage in a comfortable area for them and their children, and somewhere where they can access good educational play resources for their children as well as getting time out for themselves. The shop itself will be a mix of comfortable seating for adults, but also play areas for the children. The staff will all be mingling with the children, and the idea is to ensure that
There’s a new family coffee shop in town!
good relationships are made between staff and families, thus ensuring that everyone can relax, and enjoy their time at Coffee & Twist. Families will also have access to wireless internet therefore enabling working parents to access the area and let their children be in a stimulating environment. I am also qualified to run sessions for children and parents, and will be incorporating this experience into the shop by running Baby massage, story telling, rhyme times and baby signing sessions. The timetable will be available soon, and I hope to see some of you in those sessions as well as popping in for your time out and a lovely piece of coffee and cake! I personally love a good cup of coffee and have researched which is my favourite for months now, and am going to be serving

an Italian blend of coffee called Piacetto, which I discovered whilst doing my rounds of all the local coffee shops! I hope my customers will love it too! We will be serving an Organic menu for babies, as well as a cooked menu for children. Parents will have a wide variety to choose from our lunch menu, so I hope that everyone will be able to find something delicious to eat. I look forward to meeting all my new customers and maybe some faces that I already know from having worked so close to the vicinity of my new shop. I hope we get to know each other very well, and I cant wait to meet the next generation of children whom are going to be so important in making decisions about our old age!!

Oxygen Fit wins ‘Newcomer of the Year’ award at the National Fitness Awards Oxygen Fit, based locally in Church Farm, East Barnet, has WON the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the National Fitness Awards. The facility saw off fierce competition from more than 500 nominations in the National Fitness Awards to land the title. The award-winning gym was inspected and judged by a six-strong panel, including winner of The Biggest Loser Will Graham and top fitness model Carly Thornton. Owners Emma and Neil Godly are delighted to have won this ultimate seal of approval. Team Oxygen Fit have just returned from Birmingham, where the whole team received their award from Coronation Street’s Katherine Kelly at a glitzy presentation ceremony. Neil acknowledged “Having such a great team has helped us win such a prestigious award, and bringing home the trophy has taken staff pride to a new level. We are all so proud. I would like to thank staff for their continued efforts.” Emma commented: “It is important to us that our members – whatever their age,
body type, or exercise history – feel comfortable to ask for advice or request a new tailored programme as their body adapts. Key to our success in its first year has been operating a listening brief as a key part of our customer care programme, which has resulted in frequent improvements of the club, including adding many new classes, and new equipment. I would like to dedicate this award to all members of Oxygen Fit, and would especially like to thank them for their continued commitment and support.” Emma and Neil were praised for building a team of 8 fitness professionals – which includes two employees, originally apprentices at the club - whose shared approach to professionalism, dedication to achieving client goals, and energy. Oxygen Fit has been open just over a year, and already has had two Mayoral visits. The gym also offers a wide range of classes, including Yoga, Zumba, Boxing, Pilates, Belly Dancing, Pump and Kettlebells.mEmma and Neil are already thinking forward to next years’ awards ceremony and planning how to improve Oxygen Fit further to bag another trophy.

Bobskis are a reinvention of the sledge. Fast, flexible, easy to steer and fun! eaW Managing Director Mark Neville travels to Austria to test out the new BOBSKI. After meeting the owner and inventor of the BOBSKI sledge at last years Ski & Board Show in London, the family and I took a trip over Christmas to the Austrian Alps to stay with relatives. Fully loaded with the adult and junior version of the BOBSKI in the roof box little did we know what was in store for us when we arrived 3 days before Christmas! After unpacking the car in the delightful town of Mitterburg near Schladming, my two girls were eager to try out the new BOBSKI sledge. With a 200m downhill field in front of my relatives chalet, that ran down to a flat area, I never would of thought the girls would ever reach that far. How wrong I was. A crowd of local Austrians and family members gathered! With my youngest daughter Grace first up, she soared down the hill on the junior BOBSKI with ease. After 100m and down a rather sharp ridge she contin-
ued on until she was out of sight. Incredible balance! The BOBSKI is a sledge with a slender build and an aerodynamic frame that allows the rider to experience speed at a new level. With Grace down the hill and out of sight it was the turn of my eldest, Molly. I was quite keen to see how she would take to the thought of snow spray in her face and sitting on a wet sledge. Once again I was taken aback. The BOBSKI comes with a rubber mat that gives the rider more comfort in the sitting position. Molly pushed off and raced off at speed after Grace down the 200m hill. Take it from me, the BOBSKI is an excellent addition to anyone’s garage or shed and even if only used for 1 or 2 days a year, the art of sledging will never be the same again.

Asparagus 1. As a detox - asparagus has 288 milligrams of potassium per cup. Potassium is known for reducing belly fat. It also contains 3 grams of fibre which cleanses the digestive system. It has virtually no natural sodium, so no bloating during PMS, has no fat or cholesterol, and one cup has only 40 calories. According to a clinical dietician at UCLA Medical Center, asparagus in the ultimate in detox vegetables. 2. For anti-aging purposes - asparagus is rich in potassium, vitamin A and folate. It is also very high in glutathione - an amino acid compound with protent antioxidant properties; a must as an anti-aging deterrent. Glutathione (GSH) is an antioxidant that protects cells from toxins such as free radicals.
6. Reducing the risk of heart disease - it is the folate that has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. 7. Preventing birth defects - getting enough folate (doctors often recommend the folic acid supplement) is especially important for women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Having a folate deficiency has been correlated with increased risk of Spina Bifida (a spinal cord birth defect) and also anencephaly (a neural tube defect). 8. Additionally, studies have shown that the nutritional benefits of asparagus can help prevent and treat urinary tract infections and kidney stones. Overall, asparagus is rich in potassium, vitamin A, folate, glutathione, and vitamin K. It is high in fiber, has no sodium, is low in calories and has no cholesterol or fat. 9. As an aphrodisiac - the asparagus is considered a psycho-physiological aphrodisiac because of its shape. It is said to trigger the mind to have a physiological response.
3. Against cancer - asparagus is high in folate which is now known to be an important protection against cancer. Note: Folate is found naturally in leafy green vegetables, and citrus fruits. While folic acid is said to be the same as folate, folic acid is the supplemental form. 4. Reducing pain and inflammation - it is the folate that helps reduce inflammation. 5. Preventing osteoporosis and osteoarthritis - asparagus has vitamin K, which studies have shown can help prevent osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Vitamin K aids in bone formation and repair. It is also necessary for the synthesis of osteocalcin. Asparagus has been listed as the number one source of vitamin K.

Risotto
What you’ll need: For the risotto • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 shallot, chopped • 1 garlic clove, chopped • 200g/7oz risotto rice (eg carnaroli or arborio) • 250ml/9fl oz white wine
• 500ml/18fl oz hot vegetable stock • 4 asparagus spears, blanched, chopped • 25g/1oz unsalted butter • 75g/2¾oz parmesan, grated For the parmesan crisps • 150g/5½oz parmesan, grated
1. For the risotto, heat the oil in a frying pan and gently fry the shallot and garlic until softened but not coloured.
5. Add the asparagus, butter and parmesan. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and stir well.
2. Add the rice and fry for one minute, stirring frequently, until coated in the oil.
6. For the parmesan crisps, place six small handfuls of grated parmesan onto a non-stick baking sheet at wide intervals. Press the piles of parmesan down to flatten them, then transfer to the oven and bake for 6-8 minutes, until golden-brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool and set.
3. Add the wine and simmer until absorbed by the rice. 4. Add the hot vegetable stock a ladleful at a time, stirring between each addition to allow the liquid to be completely absorbed, until the rice is cooked and all the stock has been absorbed.
7. To serve, divide the risotto equally among two serving dishes and top with the parmesan crisps. eaW • FEB | MAR | APRIL 2012

Is this the biggest anaconda on exhibit?
Keepers from Paradise Wildlife Park and Amey Zoo are throwing down the challenge, “Is this the biggest anaconda on exhibit in the UK?”. They believe that they have the largest anaconda on exhibit anywhere in the U.K.
until they are 40 years of age in captivity. Optimus is only 11 years old, so she has a lot of growing left to do. In the wild they have been known to grow up to 6 metres long and weigh up to 150 kilos.”
The snake in question, a green anaconda called “Optimus Prime” was measured on the 31st January at a massive 373cm long and a hefty 62 kilos in weight. She needed 12 able-bodied keepers to control her incredible strength. This equates to one keeper every one foot of snake! The most frightening thing is, she’s still nowhere near fully grown!
Lynn Whitnall, director at Paradise Wildlife Park said, “We believe we have the largest Anaconda on exhibit at any zoo in the country, but we can’t know for certain. We’re inviting any other zoos in the community to come forward and rise to the challenge!”.
Optimus Prime is currently on exhibit at Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire. Sandra Pepper Working Towards Excellence The Sandra Pepper School of Dance, in Alexandra Palace, North London, has been nurturing young dancers into Professional Dancers and Teachers since 1995. The school offers valuable training from 3 1/2 years old up to 18 years and beyond, this traditional dance school dedicates itself on giving solid dance training from a young age. Following the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) syllabus in Ballet and the ISTD syllabus in Tap and Modern Theatre, this dance school provides dancers with the qualifications to achieve and succeed in becoming a professional dancer or to get to the next step of their vocational training. After speaking with Sandra, she told EAW, that the school
has a real family and friendly atmosphere having had many pupils start at a very young age and then go on to become Professional Dancers, having made lots of friends along the way. Parents are welcomed into class at the end of every term to see the progress their child has made and Sandra has a wonderful relationship with both the pupils and the parents. Sandra Pepper School of Dance offers excellent Dance training and qualifications which provides the platform for our professional dancers of tomorrow. And just like their school motto is ‘Working Towards Excellence’. For any further information please see the advert below or phone 020 8888 2955 or 07732567375 or email Sandraatheballet@aol.com
