SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS Year-long overhaul of leisure centre will bring real benefits to local community on the Enfield & Barnet borders
Southgate Leisure Centre showcases £5.5 million transformation Enfield residents are being invited to experience the results of a major redevelopment project at Southgate Leisure Centre which opened its doors in early October after eleven months of improvement works. The extensive site renovations represent an investment of over £5.5 million by Enfield Council in partnership with sport and leisure management charity Fusion Lifestyle, who run Southgate Leisure Centre. Major new additions to Southgate Leisure Centre include a state of the art 95 station gym, two new fitness studios, an indoor cycle studio and brand new activity room. There will also be an improved and enlarged car parking facility, a revamped reception area, and a new on site café with views over the poolside, where visitors can relax with a drink or snack between activities.
An interesting features of the redevelopment is the eco friendly roof on the newly built section of the leisure centre. The ‘living roof’ will be planted with grasses and plants designed to nature diversity on the site, as well as reducing the amount of rain water that goes to drainage. Local residents and existing members are being invited to come and try out all of the new facilities for themselves during an Open Weekend at Southgate Leisure Centre, which will be held on 20th and 21st October with many activities free of charge. The opening of the new facilities comes at an ideal time, as recent participation figures from Fusion Lifestyle centres in the Borough of Enfield, show a significant increase in site visits as a legacy of this summer’s Olympic Games. During the two weeks of the Olympics, there was a 26.5% increase in visits to
Fusion Lifestyle leisure centres (compared to the same dates last year) indicating that local people have been inspired by the Games to take get more active. Southgate Leisure Centre is managed by Fusion Lifestyle, a registered charity, and aims to provide sport and leisure facilities for all members of the community at accessible prices.
The reception and Studio areas at Albany Leisure Centre in Enfield. Southgate will look remarkably similar when complete.
Memberships for the Leisure Centre are on sale now, with great offers available on joining fees, and there have been no price increases as a result of the redevelopment. Success at the Lee Valley Athletics Academy
We also met Kaeshelle Cooke (16) who has been with the academy for 6 years. She is ranked third in the country for 80 meter hurdles and is now working hard on becoming number one. Both put their success down to their “stick at it and never give up” attitude. This mentality has proved successful, where the focus they bring to the athletics track follows them in day to day life. EaW met with Brain Hopkins for a catch up on the Athletics Academy at Lee Valley Athletics Centre with a view to profile selected youngsters that are on track to push for success at senior level thanks to the academy. George Vaughan (14) told us his motivation to continue was down to the academy staff, ‘they were really supportive in finding a discipline that I could excel in.’ He is now looking forward in competing at the National Young Athletes League in Manchester.

Kaeshelle & George completed her GCSE’s and is now going onto college with a number of A* and A grades behind her. She believes that sport is what helped her achieve these grades ‘training acted as a release from the books and the monotony of day to day school life’. George and Kaeshelle’s dedication and involvement in Athletics has proved to keep them focused, no matter what challenges their teenage lives have thrown at them. If you feel your children would benefit from attending the Academy at LVAC please call the number in the advertisement opposite. Editorial: Jenni Monger

SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS Team GB Hockey Bronze medallists Helen Richardson and Kate Walsh talk to eaW magazine’s Jenni Monger
JOLLY HOCKEY STICKS Both Helen and Kate got involved in the sport when they were at school. They were keen to let us know the number of schemes that were now in place to get people playing, “Many of the schemes are based around the social aspect of hockey, where people can come and play with friends in a relaxed environment”. They were most excited about Rush Hockey, a 5-aside version of the game. “It set up in local centres, players won’t need to take any equipment, they just turn up and play, it’s a way of getting involved competitively without having to commit”. Helen and Kate hope that their Olympic success will inspire others to “pick up a stick” and get involved in the sport. Visiting the Broxbourne Hockey Club was a step in the right direction to get people of all ages involved in the sport.
eaW magazine’s Jenni Monger met Team GB hockey players Helen Richardson and Kate Walsh at Broxbourne Sports Club in September to see how the Olympics have boosted hockey in general.

Encouraged from their bronze at the Olympics, Helen and Kate were keen to tell us how young people can get involved in the sport. Both Helen and Kate agreed that the Olympics gave their team individual motivation to do wel and they hoped that Olympic success would lead to a boom in participation at grass-root levels. The Olympics was their chance to inspire young players to take part. Kate announced that it gave her motivation to do well at the Olympics “with twenty-eight players in the squad we knew we had players that would appeal to everyone out there”.

FIRST CHOICE for
SPORTS INJURIES A
new network of lawyers specialising in personal injury claims was launched earlier this month. First Choice Law Network (FCLN) say sports injuries is an area of law right at the top of their hit list.
“Getting fit is fun but if you get an injury which is not your fault, someone should pay,” says FCLN manager Dalton Barrett. “We are about getting maximum compensation for our clients, and ensuring that they receive the best treatment and care they’re entitled to.” Where you are involved in sport, the people you are playing with, your trainer, the owners of the sports venue, the referee and even the groundsman may have a duty of care to you. If they breach that duty and you are injured, you may be able to bring a successful personal injury claim and recover substantial compensation for your injuries and other losses – including loss of earnings and loss of the ability to do the things you once took for granted. Getting the right advice from experienced solicitors is the key to knowing what your rights are, how to tackle tricky
legal issues and how to secure the best compensation and treatment. “The great thing about using a law network is that a network contains more than one firm of lawyers,” says Dalton Barrett. “There is a wider range of skill, knowledge, expertise and experience. You have a better chance of instructing a lawyer near to where you live. You don’t have to deal with someone on the other side of the country, someone you may never get to meet.” The normal time limit for bringing a claim is 3 years from the accident or injury, but there are exceptions to the general rule, and with children the 3 year time limit only starts to run when they reach 18. Situations in which you may be able to bring a claim include: where the sporting activity was not being properly
supervised or controlled (especially in the case of children); where you were injured as a result of defective equipment or facilities; or where someone acted in a way which was outside the rules of the sport, especially where the act was unlawful or criminal. “Many people with perfectly good claims don’t claim because they think they are at fault,” explains FCLN’s Dalton Barrett “but being at fault may not prevent you from successfully bringing a claim – although your compensation could be reduced. “The important thing is to take expert legal advice directly from a solicitor when you are not sure about the position. First Choice Law Network is not an Internet marketing outfit hustling for cases and selling them on to solicitors. When you deal with us you deal directly with law firms – people who have client satisfaction as a number one objective. Doing our best for our clients is our first goal. We work on a ‘no win no fee basis’ – so when our clients win, we win!”
FCLN covers a wide range of sport related injuries and claims including: team sport injuries such as in rugby & football, accidents at sporting venues, gym accidents & injuries where a sporting injury is made worse as a result of medical negligence, playground injuries
Dalton Barrett Solicitors is a member of the First Choice Law Network. They are based in central London and provide a free initial consultation in sports injury cases. Email db@daltonbarrett.co.uk Websites: www.injurysolicitorshelpline.com and www.fcln.co.uk

eaW magazine’s Mark Neville talks to Double Gold Medallist Laura Trott on her life growing up in Cheshunt , meeting Prince Harry and the saga of the pork and apple bap!
I could not have been more wrong if I had actually believed my naive assumption that our new double gold medallist and local girl Laura Trott was unlikely to be busy two months on from the most feel good summer of sport ever witnessed in this country. After a trip to Dubai with boyfriend and fellow Team GB member Jason Kenny, endless interviews, TV appearances, and other media engagements, an exceptionally busy Laura was quick to agree to catch up with me at eaW magazine, as the genuinely humorous 20 year old would never forget her roots as a local girl living and growing up in Cheshunt. Sitting in the back of a taxi, mid afternoon, on the way to a photo shoot with one of the nations leading magazines, Laura spoke with me at length over the phone as if the events of this summer were only yesterday. For a girl who speaks so wisely about the grassroots of her sport and the influential people who have made such a fundamental contribution to her success, I was interested in how she managed to find cycling as a hobby. “I remember mountain biking along
the New River with my family but not really feeling the excitement, so Dad took me over to the Gosling Centre in Welwyn where they had a 500 metre track. It was a fitness thing at first, but even as young as 8, I remember entering a handicapped open race of all levels. Because I was so small my handicap was quite high and as everyone got ready to race I was thrust forward by the biggest and strongest man there, who sent me in to an unbeatable lead and my first ever victory. Funnily enough I won £2 for that race”. As we moved onto the subject of school, there was a giggle as she explained, “Turnford School was good fun and I was one of those students who liked hockey and other sports.” “It was my sports teachers George Demetriou and Mr. Nagle that recognised I was sporty and both encouraged me to succeed in everyway I could. In the end Mr. Demetriou became my mentor and I would like to thank him for everything he did while I was at school. The funny thing is I always chose subjects that were more practical with very little written work!” As Laura continued to talk about her days
seating area and seated next to Prince Harry, I could have died”. At this point Laura told me that Jason and her had been a couple for a while and she didn’t realise that the cameras would be focused on her so much. “The cameras and paparazzi is the hardest thing to accept. My private life is exactly what it is, private and I am still finding it hard to believe that people want to take pictures of me”. As a local magazine that encourages its readers to participate in leisure and sport, I explained to Laura that her private life was not something I wanted to pry into but I did want to know who helps her deal with this
“
and who has prepared it. With constant drug testing in all sports we have to take things seriously. So, as I was handed this pork and apple bap I quickly turned around and, quite aggressively I think, said, ‘I don’t want this’. At this point a rather burly bodyguard leant over my shoulder and whispered in my ear, “David Beckham has just been down to buy you that”. I looked round and felt so embarrassed. I must add I still didn’t eat it!”. As we chatted further about how that night panned out, Laura mentioned that the whole Olympic experience had been the most wonderful time of her life and she still pinches herself everyday. I was interested to know about the future and how, at just 20 years old, she hopes to top the two gold medals won in London. ‘It’s all about building to Rio in 2016 now. We have the Commonwealths and the World Championships over the next few years but I suppose we all look forward in competing at the Olympics where the highest accolades and rewards are”. As Laura approached her destination, I just had time to ask her whether she had bought her sister the car she promised her if
I would say to everyone that it’s important to keep enjoying sport at whatever level you are. I love what I do and very rarely get nervous. I just love competing and I think it’s important to everyone that they make sure they have fun in sport
sudden change in lifestyle. “Apart from my family, my agent Chris from three60 has been brilliant in helping me deal with the media” she added. I told her to forget all the media talk, let’s hear more about the Prince Harry night! “So, we were not allowed to take bottle openers in the stands and I had been handed a bottle of beer. As I gazed around looking for someone to help me, Prince Harry leant over and took the bottle and proceeded to take the top off with the bottom of a bottle of water. As the top came off it span up in the air nearly hitting a person in front. As you can imagine I couldn’t stop giggling”. Laura then laughed down the phone - obviously recalling a moment that she had just remembered. Of course I wanted to know. ‘At one point I was handed a pork and apple bap wrapped in tissue paper. I looked at Jason and obviously it’s something athletes have to be extra vigilant with. We are trained to eat the right food and we always know where the food has come from
“
at Turnford School and how she had rushed through her A Levels, I got the impression that despite her recent rise to celebrity status, she still remains that young girl from Cheshunt that all young people can look up to. A girl that still finds time to be with her family but also is at the top echelon of her chosen sport who dedicates hours of sweat and tears to achieve the highest goals. As we moved on to more recent situations in her life, the inevitable was bound to surface. That night at the Beach Volleyball with HRH Prince Harry and David Beckham! “I still can’t believe it. It was so surreal. It was the first time that we had had the chance to go out and relax. Jason (Kenny) called me and said we had been invited to the volleyball. To be honest, I didn’t really want to go as some of Team GB girls were going partying and I would have preferred to join them. Instead Jason twisted my arm and we went. I thought it would be tickets in the stands for just Jason and I but as we were ushered through security into the VIP
she won gold. “Not yet no. Fiat, who sponsor British Cycling have offered a Fiat 500 but I think she wants a bigger car to handle the bikes on the back”. Finally, for youngsters growing up in and around the Hertfordshire and North London areas who have widely accepted Laura as a local hero from London 2012, I asked her if she had any words of wisdom for them in their quest to emulate her. “I think I would say to everyone that it’s important to keep enjoying sport at whatever level you are. I love what I do and very rarely get nervous. I just love competing and I think it’s important to everyone that they make sure they have fun in sport”. As I thanked Laura and wished her well for the photoshoot, I sat back and realised that sport is what you make it in life. Here’s a girl, with her feet firmly on the floor of reality and at the top of her game, still enjoying cycling and having fun. If only winning Olympic gold medals was that easy.

the glory this year has made the thought ‘extremely tempting’. After previously winning Bedford’s Sports Personality of the year in 2008, winning Olympic gold was a huge step into the limelight for Etienne - “winning the award was a huge thing for me, but being an Olympic champion, and being known worldwide just doesn’t compare”. He hopes to be in the running for the award this year too, however he is modest about being nominated. “Things come to you if you are humble and wait your turn rather than if you grasp at things”. The team hope that their canoeing success will inspire a younger generation to get involved in the

• The high content of riboflavin present in venison helps reduce the occurrence of migraine attacks, by improving the energy metabolism in those who suffer from migraine headaches.

• The niacin (vitamin B3) present in Venison helps lower the risk of developing osteoarthritis by as much as half. • The meat has even less cholestorol than chicken breast, which makes it the perfect option for those who are vulnerable to heart disease. Introduction to Mulberries Mulberries are large, deciduous trees native to warm, temperate, and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Technically, the mulberry fruit is an aggregation of small fruits arranged longitudinally around the central axis as in blackberry or loganberries. Each fruit measures 2-5 cm long. In most species these berries are purple-red when ripen; however they can be white, red, purple or multiple colours in the same fruit Fresh Mulberry Mulberry can be eaten fresh, and if you like, with cream and honey. They can be added to your salad and great as jams, jellies and syrups. They don’t freeze well so if you have a lot of mulberries, use it immediately. Because of its high water content and thin skins, they tend to get moldy or ferment fast. If you have a lot, it is best to turn them into jams, syrups or bake as cakes.
Tri-ing so hard HODDESDON Tri Club members David Watts and Hannah Bates travelled to Roade in Northamptonshire to take part in the Terry Wootton Roade Kids Triathlon on 29th September. Both competing in the Tristar 3 Category (13-14yrs) having to swim 184m, cycle 3.2k and run 1600m.
(00:22.18). Amazingly both David and Hannah finished with exactly the same time and they both finished 3rd in their age group category. Comparing the times you can see that Hannah’s transition times were slightly quicker than David’s which explains how they finished in the same time.
Hannah swam (00:02.59) cycled (00:09.24) and ran (00:07.55) finishing in an overall time from the gun of (00:22.18). David swam (00:02:55) cycled (00:09.10) and ran (00:7:53) finishing in an overall time from the gun of
Alan Watts, David’s father said “this was David’s first triathlon and he was very pleased to end up in third place and able to stand on the podium. He looked very strong on the bike overtaking many in the field.” “Due to Hannah’s start time being approximately four minutes behind David’s they ended up meeting out on the bike circuit and it was good to see them playing cat and mouse and spurring each other on.”
Dried Mulberry Dried mulberry is more crunchy and is a good healthy snack. It can also be used as pie fillings and as mulberry muffins. For some variety, you can add it to your cookies, cakes, ice creams and yogurts. You can drink it as tea from its leaves or syrups. Another way to enjoy the Health benefits of Mulberry.
“Hannah had a great race and was remarkably strong in her final running lap and sprint for the finish line.” Well done to both competitors!

SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS eaW magazine’s Jenni Monger trys Piloxing for the very first time at St. Marys CofE High School
Sexy, Sleek and very Powerful! eaW sent journalist Jenni Monger to try the new American craze to sweep the nation, Piloxing. Being a sport enthusiast herself, she entered the session with some anticipation as to whether it would be a good workout; here is what she had to say... “Shoes off, bare foot and ready to go I was excited to give piloxing a try. As soon as the music started, so did the workout. Moving in time to the music, the class incorporated a mixture of boxing moves whilst working on the body’s core muscles. The class was non-stop and worked on periods of high and low intensity workouts with short breaks inbetween. “The class incorporated toe pointing, punches, plies, jumps and leg rises to give the body

be great fun for everyone, from garden trampolinists and those bouncing on a rebounder as part of a fitness regime to people competing in the sport.”
I enjoyed the boxing moves that were incorporated into the class the most, some of the ladies even wore special gloves to help work their arm muscles to the max. “What I loved most about the class was that it was suitable for all ages, fitness levels and abilities. Although it was my first time trying Piloxing, I did not feel at a disadvantage as everybody carried out the class at their own pace. Burning 1000 calories per session, Piloxing definitely is a great way to get fit, lose weight and have fun with a group of like minded, friendly women”. Editorial: Jenni Monger
One of the UK’s top trampolinists has pledged her support for a new campaign launched in September to generate awareness of the benefits of bouncing. The ‘Get Britian Bouncing’ campaign is designed to promote the many benifits of trampolining, establishing it as a fun and safe activity for all the family.
Chief Excecutive Officer of Super Tramp Martin Schofield, is glad for the support Laura is giving to the campaign, “We are delighted that Laura is supporting ‘Get Britian Bouncing’ and we’re sure she will inspire many people to give trampolining a go”. ‘Get Britian Bouncing’ aims to link with many other community and health organisations nationwide to work together to get the nation bouncing safely. For further details, people can visit www.getbritainbouncing.org.uk.
Bouncing has proven to be beneficial to those suffering from Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that effects more than 9,300 in the UK. Aswell as increasing awareness, the campaign will help raise funds for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. World and European medallist, Laura Gallagher (23) is keen to get behind the campaign “It can
