SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS Another amazing win for Presdales in the 2013 challenge at Wodson Park, East Hertfordshire
New Schools, New Records and plenty of sunshine at the Nicky Morris Challenge at Wodson The twenty third promotion of the Nicky Morris Challenge took place at Wodson Park on Wednesday, 10th July, with a record number of entries coming from schools in Mid and East Herts and West Essex, with newcomers Chancellors from Brookman’s Park and Highfield from Letchworth. ‘It is amazing and exciting to have new schools joining the competition and travelling so far to take part in it’ said David Rice, HaWaC’s Senior Coach. He added, ‘This meant the number of athletes competing was well over 600 girls. Another record for the competition’. Probably the one of the most exciting events of the day was
the under 13 girls triple jump competition, where the existing record, set 2010, was broken by four different athletes, with M. Daniels of Simon Balle eventually claiming the longest jump of with day with 6.70m to replace her Simon Balle colleague on the record table, and which later on in the proceedings was enough to earn her a ‘Jane Branford Memorial Award’ for Outstanding Performances. Shortly, after the under 15 girls record was broken by Ade Omitowoju from Newport Free Grammar taking the honours with a leap of 10.14m, earning herself one of the Jane Branford Memorial Awards’. One of the competitions best
records, set by Charlotte Rose of Broxbourne back in 2005, was the under 15 Girls Shot Putt record of 10.60m, so it came as no surprise when Nicole Parcell of Presdales returned to form breaking it with an impressive throw of 10.84m to earn the other ‘Jane Branford Award’ and make up for Nicole’s disappointment at the English Schools Championships.
very good performances from Saffron Walden High School and Broxbourne, which added to the excitement on the day.
Whilst there might have been only three records broken, there were some outstanding performances in all of the events and age groups. The Presdales athletes found their form to take the top spot in the Challenge once again but they did not have it all their own way as they were pushed by
The event attracted over 600 participants and we hope that our involvement helped in making the event a special day for all of the participants, their friends and family’.
Mideast’s UK Director, Steve Wansell said, ‘It is with great pride that Mideast has chosen to associate ourselves with the Nicky Morris Challenge, one of the biggest Inter-school Athletic Competition for Girls in the UK.

Rivers Education Support Centre represented Broxbourne in the event at the London 2012 venue which was organised by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.

The schools festival which was the first since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games ended featured hundreds of young people representing every London borough as well as Essex and Hertfordshire rafting the rapids and paddling in the wake of Team GB’s successful Olympians. of their triumph to witness the completion of the first phase of post-Olympics development work at the centre. Tim Baillie said: “The memories of the London 2012 Games will never leave us and it’s great to see so many young people coming to Lee Valley White Water Centre and taking to the same water where we achieved our win.
“We hope that we can inspire more young people to take up paddle sport and having these facilities can help to unearth the sport’s future champions.”

SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS Budding eaW journalist Rhys Short brings you his views on the Olympic Legacy and how it’s affecting sport.
How the Olympic legacy is impacting local sport eaW Junior reporter, Rhys Short
Britain hosting the Olympics of 2012 was expected to spark a new interest in sport. But, has it lived up to its expectations? £19.4m has been distributed to 377 community sport projects in every part of England as part of the Olympic legacy. British Prime Minister, Mr. David Cameron said, ‘We’re making sure that a real legacy is left long after the games are over. We want to see a big impact on our economy.’ For Broxbourne in particular the Olympics gratefully left behind the White Water Centre: a fantastic example of the legacy programme. The ongoing opportunities for canoeists are thriving due to this extraordinarily amazing facility that helps to push individuals to new limits. Not only are the facilities helping Broxbourne
but also the sheer passion that has been passed down from the Olympics to local swimmers such as Georgie Pryor, the 15 year old English record holder for 50m butterfly. She told me, ‘It makes me feel like I want to train harder just so I can achieve what they did at the Olympics’.
Young Squash player Amber Marshall makes her move up the rankings in new age bracket.
This is only one of the people in the Broxbourne who have been inspired to do better, although, as you can imagine, almost everyone was inspired!
Amber Marshall, who plays squash at Broxbourne Sports Club and is coached by level 3 professional squash coach Geoff Taylor, has already shown signs of future stardom in the game by beginning her move up the U15 rankings.
One of the biggest successes, as everyone knows, is the achievement of local cyclist Laura Trott. Local hero Laura is the double Olympic gold medallist in Team Pursuit and Omnium. Almost immediately after the Olympics she helped launch RideLondon, a programme for beginners to elite cyclists to ride safely around London. This also helps Broxbourne as Laura has inspired local people to believe they can do it too. In conclusion, life is looking positive for the Borough of Broxbourne.
It’s all moving for u15 Amber Marshall
Amber finished 4th in the England rankings for the U13s category and now at 13 years old she has moved up to play in the U15s. Amber recently won her first tournament in the new age group at the Redbridge Junior Open where she won all her matches 3-0 to get her into the final beating Bonnie Butler from Norfolk 3-1. More recently she won the Connaught Junior Open and has now moved up in the England rankings for U15s
from 46 to 31. Amber has a lot of hard work to do now to move up the English rankings for the U15s but hopefully, with Geoff Taylor’s help and her own commitment to the game, she will be continue to be successful.

SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS Hoddesdon Triathlon Club members enter the Rob McLean Junior Triathlon event on 30th June 2013
Hoddesdon Triathlon athlete comes home unscathed in first ever triathlon Hoddesdon Triathlon Club had two club members entered into the Rob McLean Junior Triathlon hosted by Cambridge Triathlon Club in late June. Robin Kettle – TriStar 1 category (9-10yrs) was taking part in his first ever triathlon and Hannah Bates - (Tristar 3) competing in her 5th triathlon of the season. Robin was very excited to be taking part in his first triathlon, having had a warm up at the Buntingford aquathlon at the start of the month, where he comfortably won the U10 boys category. He was a little worried about the transitions on and off the bike, having never competed with it. The race was very well organised and the marshals were really helpful and gave him advice about how to set up his bike properly before the race to make transition easier.
The distances for Tristar 1 were 150m swim, 2k bike and 1200 run. Robin had a strong swim leg (3m55s) placing him 4th/19 TS1 boys, but found the cycle ride more challenging with a time of 7m20s ranking him 8th/19. However, he looked more at home with the running and kept up a steady pace throughout the whole distance, ranked 6th/19. Robin completed the triathlon in a time of 17m50s, placing overall in 7th out of 19 TS1 boys and, more importantly, enjoyed it so much that within minutes of finishing, although complaining that his legs hurt, he asked if he could do another triathlon! Hannah, in a very strong Tristar 3 category had to complete a 300m swim, 6k bike and 2400k run. Her split times were 5m 35s, 16m 42s and 12m45s for the swim, bike and run respectively. If you love adventurous days out then I recommend the Merlin Annual Pass. This pass pays for itself in 4 visits, so it’s a great deal if you’re a thrill seeker or just love visiting attractions. The reason I love Merlin Passes is because they have locations everywhere, so no matter where you live there’s always one nearby. If you live in London there are great ones to visit, like Madame Tussauds, the London Dungeon, the London Eye and Sea Life Aquarium. But if you’re willing to make the trip, my personal favourite is Thorpe Park with their new ride The Swarm, its well worth the journey! However if you’re looking for something closer to home, I suggest the Delta Force Paintball – Oakwood, with another location in North London. It’s great for any occasion really, and with trip advisor rating it five stars you know you can trust it for a great day out.
I also like Paradise Wildlife Park and Willows Farm. If karting is your idea of fun then Rye House offers it all. Although I’ve suggested varying activities, nothing can really beat a great park. There are always things to do! Whether it’s taking a peaceful walk or cycle to simply meeting friends. But one of my personal favourites is Stanborough Park and lakes.. They host so many great activities, there’s always something to do no matter what your preferences. One of my personal favourites is the sailing. So summing it up into a neat bundle, there are always fun things to do during the summer holidays whether on big pounds or small pocket money. So make sure that you can go out and experience it, because that’s what the summer holidays is about to a 14 year old.

Our Healthy Eating Summer Options... The alternative meats we feature here provide a healthy, low fat & low cholesterol option, as well as being high in iron & very tender. We have experienced a consistent increase in the demand for these alternative meats as diets become more health conscious. These meat sources adhere to strict conservation & welfare policies.
VENISON STEAK
KANGAROO STEAK
Venison is the perfect red meat. It has tremendous health benefits, is highly nutritious & houses fewer calories, less fat & more iron than chicken breast. Venison meat is lean, flavourful & wonderfully delicious. Prime grilled venison fillet steak with onions, garlic, olive oil, brandy, demi-glace, stilton cheese served with salad & chips
A succulent, versatile, lean red meat. Low fat & high in iron. Internationally recognised as high quality game. Grilled prime kangaroo fillet with demi-glace & brandy sauce, touch of double cream, served with fries & garnished with rocket & strips of red pepper
REINDEER STEAK
This meat is high in protein whilst being a low fat option. A delicate flavour which many think is comparable to chicken & crab; a luxury meat that will not disappoint! Grilled prime crocodile fillet steak with onions, garlic, black pepper, butter, crème fraiche & vodka, served with basmati rice & garnished with salad
Reindeer meat is healthier than beef or pork. This is not just because of its healthy low fat content. Reindeer meat also has a much higher content of vitamins & minerals. The health advantages of reindeer meat have a great deal to do with the fact that reindeer spend a large part of the year out in vast open pastures, get more physical activity & eat lichen, heather, herbs & berries, which are packed with antioxidants. Prime grilled reindeer fillet steak with onions, garlic, chilli, flat mushrooms, demi-glace, red wine served with salad & chips
BISON STEAK A rich meat with a distinctive full flavour. Bison steaks are 97% fat free & contain 40% more protein than beef. Grilled prime bison steak with sweet pineapple sauce, garlic, white wine & butter, served with fries & garnished with rocket & strips of red pepper
CROCODILE
SPRINGBOK This is one of the finest game meats available. It has a beautiful red colour & a refined taste with a subtle flavour. A great tender game meat to try & about as natural as you can get! Sun beats down on Herts Youth Games H E R T S Y O U T H G A M E S
Fierce competition took place under equally fierce sunshine on the hottest day of the year so far when 1,400 young athletes ranging in age from U9s to U15s took part in the ten different indoor and outdoor sports. The facilities at Wodson Park Sports Centre were packed with competitors and parents for a fantastic day of sport. Football, golf, hockey and netball all took place outside - a riot of colour and competitive spirit in the glorious sunshine, whilst the indoor sports were also hard-fought with boccia, table tennis, badminton, basketball, sports hall athletics and fencing all fiercely contested! The teams were organised and managed by each local Sports Development Officers whose athletes competed in a really well organised event that involved a huge team of organisers and volunteers. Everyone worked hard all day with lots of enthusiasm, despite the high temperatures. The Hertfordshire youngsters were representing their Districts and Boroughs with pride, wearing distinctive team rainbow colours in a busy day of hard fought but friendly rivalry. Broxbourne had an extremely successful day resulting in 5 top three placings in Golf (1st), Netball (1st), Cricket (1st), Boccia (2nd), Girls Hockey (2nd). This resulted in the team finishing 2nd overall by only 2 points. (see results in table below)
Organiser Tony Marmo was delighted with how the event went, saying “It’s fantastic to see so many youngsters taking part in competitive sport. The Herts Youth Games aims to attract semi-sporty young people to competitive sport and inspire them to want to compete at higher levels. Now in its 19th year, the Games could not happen without the voluntary support of many sports clubs and individuals.” The Herts Youth Games is an annual event organised by the Herts Youth Games Association with support from the Herts Sports Partnership that showcases all that is good about youngsters participating and competing in sport. Part of the Hertford Music Festival, Rock at the Castle once again gets ready to rock Hertford.
Hertford gets ready to ROCK! The portcullis is rattling open, the bands are tuning up for this year’s event, organised by Hertford Town Council in collaboration with Hertford Music Festival’s Kev Saunders. The annual event, held in the grounds of Hertford Castle, will be taking place on Sunday 4th August, from 12.30pm – 7.30pm. With nine amazing live bands on the main stage and eight terrific solo artists, duos and trios on the Hertford House Hotel Acoustic Stage, Hertford Castle is ready to rock again with a formidable line-up ranging from hard rock to pop, country rock to ska and indie, with local ‘supergroup’ HERTFORD ALLSTARS closing the show as usual with a blistering set of rock covers. Neil and Jess Drummond from The Guitar Studio in Railway Street, are behind the brand new artists’ hospitality tent and are also generously providing the

guitar amplifiers and drum kit for the day. “This is possibly the strongest line-up yet, with Cardinal Wino’s raucous, countrified rock’n’roll, The Ghost of Samantha’s quirkily infectious pop, Broken Chords’ swaggering riffing rock, the Apryphalites 21st century ska and the very welcome return of Hertford’s own Hip Hop surrealists Ahead of Time Crew!” said Kev Saunders (Hertford Music Festival). Admission is by suggested voluntary donation of £2, with all proceeds going to the 2nd Bengeo Scouts. The group, established over 70 years ago, plan to use the funds to help build a new Scout Hut for use by the local community. As always, the edges of the lawn will be packed with activities for kids of all ages such as a Bouncy Castle, Face Painting, Balloons, and a giant Joust game – as well as a licensed bar and a feast of food franchises.
