LEA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL’S

PRESENTATION

AFTERNOON As a school we achieved our best ever examination results and the best performing students were awarded for high levels of attainment in each exam subject. Sporting achievement was also recognised and we celebrated the successes of our Year 9 Football team and the Senior Girls Rounders Team as well as some outstanding individual performances from students achieving District, Regional or National recognition in a wide variety of activities ranging from Karate to Irish Dancing to Girls Football.

This year we were very pleased that Matthew Syed, who was Commonwealth Table Tennis Champion on three occasions and competed in two Olympic Games, and is now a well-known British journalist and broadcaster came to speak to the school and present the awards. At Lea Valley High School, we have fully embraced the concepts in his latest book Bounce in order to inform Teaching and Learning techniques and raise the aspirations and achievements of our students, leading them to achieve, develop and excel.

On Friday 30th September, Lea Valley High School held its annual Presentation event which recognises the successes and achievements of students in the previous academic year. Matthew gave a fantastically motivating speech to the school community and presented all the awards to the student recipients. He also gave a Table Tennis demonstration with our own Table Tennis star, Sam Cowan in Year 11. We also had some great performances from the School Jazz Band and Nathan King our International standard Irish Dancer. We thank Matthew Syed for coming to speak to us and congratulate all the outstanding students who received awards and performed so well during the afternoon.

What a year we have had so far and what a year it will be in 2012. The Olympics come to town and everyone associated with sport will be glued to the telly or sitting in the stands watching the competition.

Hertford & Ware Athletes perform to their best. A number of personal best’s and a pleasing medal haul was achieved as seven members of the HWAC squad took part in the Eastern Counties Combined Event Championships in late September. Amoung the competitors were Millie Sandell, Jenna Hoyte and Sally Cowler in the Girls Under 15s event, Simon Wake in the Under 20s and Pat Barrett, Matt Hamilton and Martin Procter in the Senior/Veteran Men’s Events. The Under 15 Girl’s competition proved to be quite an exciting competition with the three squad members changing positions as the competition progressed. After the first discipline (Long Jump) Cowler took the overall lead by a small margin despite Sandell in fourth, producing a new personal best of 4.55m. After the Hurdles and Shot Putt Sandell had the edge after throwing a personal best throw of 8.22m.

The fourth event was the High Jump, and again all three were quite strong, but as it was Hoyte’s speciality she jumped close to her p/b with 1.54m taking her into first place overall. The final event was the 800m, which is no one’s favourite, and after a long season and quite a long day it was not an event the girls were looking forward to. Hoyte knew she had to run to a p/b if she was to secure gold but after a thrilling race finished with the silver medal. Sandell took bronze with Cowler just outside the medals. All three are first year under 15s, and next year could prove to be an exciting prospect as they put in their first full winter’s training. Photos courtesy of Peter Milsom.

Those that attended the Edmonton Eagles Amateur Boxing Club’s Presentation Day last month would have heard first hand the success of the Boxing and Mentoring Programmes. Teachers, Police Officers and young people themselves spoke about how these programmes are making such a difference and helping young people to make something positive of their lives. The presentation also included an encouraging interview with the Head Coach about the work of the club that was recently shown on Sky Sports 2 channel. These boxing programmes have currently been run in half of the

Borough’s Secondary Schools plus a number of Primary Schools with excellent feedback on the benefit they bring. In one school there was a 51% overall improvement in behaviour of those that attended the 10 week programme. For further information about these please contact the Liaison Officer, Kyri Yiallouris on 07946 522486. The Club is looking forward to its young people competing in its forthcoming Boxing Show, which will be held on the 13th October 2011. We hope the evening will be a great success and families and friends will come to support their local stars.

Sweep Up Fishing Project Kings Arms & Cheshunt Angling Society (KACAS), in association with Active Broxbourne and linked to National Fishing Month, ran a series of 7 novice events from 7th August to 14th September 2011 followed by a match on Sunday 18th September. These events were open to all and at no cost to attendees with the tackle & bait supplied by KACAS coaches, either from their own stock, or that funded by a grant from Active Broxbourne for this purpose. Two coaches (Doug Howell & Steve Parker) were on site at each event to help the youngsters.

The first event was a four hour taster session with an extra 6 sessions of 3 hours follow up that really kept the young anglers on their toes. The Wednesday evening sessions covered whip/short pole, float fishing & feeder fishing. Total number of attendees was 20, with ages ranging from 6 – 15 years old.

First fish was caught by Robert McArdle followed by all catching small fish (Roach, Rudd, Bream, Gudgeon) at intervals. Reece Clarke had a brief encounter with a sizeable carp until the hook pulled out. By lunchtime the result seemed to be close

LEISURE CENTR UPDATE

Albany & Southgate Leisure Centres set for revamp Enfield Council and Fusion Lifestyle have announced that the re-development work has started this month at Albany Leisure Centre and is scheduled for completion in Spring 2012. Designed to give contemporary spaces with natural light, it is promised that the ambitious plans will create a local leisure centre which will rival any other. The work will include extending the existing ground floor extension to house a new gym, at least twice the size of the current gym, and it will be equipped with state-of-theart cardiovascular and weight training equipment. Two new studios will extend the number of classes available, with the addition of a dedicated indoor cycling studio.

The reception area is being reconfigured to improve access for all visitors and the changing rooms have been redesigned to provide much improved space with a separate schools group changing area.

NETBALL FEATURE

crosskeys netball club

CONGRATULATIONS... ...to Rebecca Hazell of Crosskeys Netball Club who has been selected for the second year in succession to play for “Surrey Storm”, the National Talent League side based at the University of Surrey, Guilford. eaW magazine was invited to meet England Netball International and Surrey STORM captain Tamsin Greenway for an exclusive interview for eaW readers. Tamsin has been a part of the England set up since 2004/5, making her senior debut against South Africa. Since her days playing netball at Bath University, Tamsin has gone onto represent her country over 40 times She was a bronze medalist in the World Netball Championships in Singapore this year, and was a Commonwealth bronze medalist in Delhi in 2010. After a stint in Australia with the Queensland Firebirds, Tamsin is now at Surrey STORM. Now a regular voice on the netball circuit, her aim is to promote netball to a wider audience. Here’s what Tamsin had to say to eaW:

How do we keep girls interested in netball once they hit their teenage years? Netball is such a social sport and girls enjoy netball at an early age. I think we need to create some role models where they can see the sport as exciting, healthy and with girls keeping fit. Girls are all into the way they look and what they’re doing and I don’t think they see enough role models they can relate to, as we are just normal people who play our sport at a top level. How do you think you can achieve this? We need to be getting out there into the public eye, and despite the low media presence keep promoting the sport where we can. It’s great we are on Sky Sports but more is needed from our end by passing the word on. How can you change this? It’s about time Netball branched out. It’s funny because all girls play it at school. There are millions of women and girls playing in clubs and we regularly sell out crowds of 1000 at Surrey Storm games. I also see hundreds of girls playing in summer and winter camp across the country. The problem is what happens after this, as it doesn’t filter down to those who stop or those who are not involved in a club or a school set-up. What do you think about mixed Netball? I spent two years out in Australia and played mixed netball a lot in the off-season. It’s fantastic. It also brings in a different crowd. It’s great because men come along then pass the word down to their daughters or sisters and it changes the perception that it’s just a ‘girlie sport’.

Why did you choose Bath University? I had very little choice. If you want to play for England and as an amateur sport it meant I had to choose a University that had a netball programme. At the time Bath University had a netball programme that suited me. Now there are hundreds that have netball programmes.

She hopes to continue playing Netball at a high level when she goes to University and is grateful to the Coaches at Crosskeys for their support and encouragement over the years.

I think you touched on it earlier why kids drop out of the sport. You need to give them encouragement and the opportunities needed in the sport to change the perception. We have had kids come down to England games and Storm games, which has opened their eyes to the game and given them the desire to want to play. It’s also good that the Super League is on our doorstep and the prices to watch are cost effective enough. Definitely. It’s the arenas that are not big enough. We could sell 3000 if we had the space. When we play for England at the O2 we have 8000 - 10000 people. My biggest crowd I played in front of was 12000 in Australia. Good luck Down Under and thanks for speaking to eaW! No problem and thank you. You can follow Tamsin on Twitter @tamsingreenway. If you’re keen to work

Not quite. It’s really social though and we all get on really well. We like to dress up nice and go out and have fun on our down times. All netballers play the sport because they love the game.

What is the standard of netball in England like compared to the rest of the world?

TURNFORD TAKE NATIONAL CLUB OF THE YEAR TITLE Saturday 17th September saw the England Netball National Goalden Globe Awards take place in Leicester, a glitzy affair that brings the country’s greatest volunteers together to celebrate and pay tribute to the time and effort they dedicate to netball. President, Maureen Ball, Head Coach, Carole Titmuss and Young Volunteer 20 year old Charlotte Rose were more than delighted to receive the National Outstanding Netball Club of the Year presented to them by England Netball’s Board member, Anita Navin for their complete commitment to the development of their 273 members, whether they’re players, coaches, officials, volunteers or all of the above. Carole states Turnford have qualified two new Level 1 coaches, two new Level 2 coaches and a Level 3 coach this year. Nine new umpires, including two B Award. Fourteen new first aiders and they have had 12 people attend a Safeguarding Course. It is not surprising that with all this expertise inhouse the club is extremely successful on the court, enjoying a wonderful 2010/11 season. The first team gained a place at play offs into the National League Division 2, finishing in a very credible fourth position. Another of their teams gained entry into the RCL Division 2 finishing in the top spot. The U14 and U16 teams won the regional league, giving them both entry into the National finals where the U14s picked up the National runners up level. She states that whilst she is extremely proud that Turnford gained this award, the Club will not rest on its laurels and will continue to work hard to maintain its high standard of volunteers.

We play in 4 Different leagues including Premier. Fixtures at weekends (and Monday nights in Winter). Club plays in various summer leagues and tournaments. Overseas tour every 2 years - next tour is to St Lucia in 2013.

Enfield Ignatians Youth section Round Up The U15s are joint leaders in Herts-Middlesex Division Six after securing a thrilling 35-22 win over Bedford B. Trailing 22-7 midway through the second period, Ignatians produced a thrilling comeback by scoring 28 unanswered points to secure a famous win.

The Enfield Ignatians youth section has made a cracking start to the new season as two sides currently top their respective divisions. The ambitious U17s inparticular, have set out their stall by claiming respective 20-10 and 24-14 wins over Datchworth and Twickenham to head Herts-Middlesex Division Three. Having accumulated a maximum ten points after accumulating bonus points wins on both occasions, Ignatians currently enjoy a four point cushion over chasing Tabard.

The U13s are are on top of the world in Herts-Middlesex Division Seven after registering a bloodless 60-0 win over Fullerians B. Although, for administrative purposes, no win is recorded as more than the official 45-0. Finally, one has to salute the success of the minis recruitment drive in which players were asked to bring a friend to training and which yielded 15 new faces on October 9. With classes for children as young as 3 years old up to adults, the directors of Mayhem offer classes in all aspects of performing arts from tap dancing to adult acting. With annual dance shows and musical theatre performances played out to 1000s of theatre goers, the real work that happens behind the barn doors is something to be seen. Is it careful planning or a stroke of strategic mastery that Mayhem have recently launched their ‘FREE CLASSES FOR ONE WEEK’’ special that will allow people from Cheshunt to Hoddesdon to see for themselves what the producers

of the biggest entertainment programme in history have already seen. Well lit and spacious studios, music rooms, acting and dancing areas all under one roof in a central location. With the tough times that have beset the industry with the current economic situation it is fitting that Nicole Barke and Alex Purves, the company directors, have continued to offer the best service available to them and dedicated themselves in the quest to build a company that people will be proud of. As acting landlords to the X Factor rehearsal team, there has never been a better time for Mayhem to open their doors to everyone to enjoy the services of the, now, highest profile performing arts company around.

‘Working Towards Excellence’

Sandra Pepper School of Dance The Sandra Pepper School of Dance, in Alexandra Palace, North London, has been nurturing young dancers into Professional Dancers and Teachers since 1995. The school offers valuable training from 3 1/2 years old up to 18 years old and beyond, this traditional dance school dedicates itself on giving solid dance training from a young age. Following the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) syllabus in Ballet and the ISTD syllabus in Tap and Modern Theatre, this dance school provides dancers with the qualifications to achieve and succeed in becoming a professional dancer or to get to the next step of their vocational

training. After speaking with Sandra, she told EAW, that the school has a real family and friendly atmosphere having had many pupils start at a very young age and then go on to become Professional Dancers, having made lots of friends along the way. Parents are welcomed into class at the end of every term to see the progress their child has made and Sandra has a wonderful relationship with both the pupils and the parents. Sandra Pepper School of Dance offers excellent Dance training and qualifications which provides the platform for our professional dancers of tomorrow.
