THE MAGAZINE FOR for all SPORTthe & LEISURE family IN WELWYN & HATFIELD.

field Swim Centre and Hatfield Leisure Centre

WHSPAA Chairman’s welcome to WHSPAA-eaW magazine A big welcome to all readers of this our biggest step forward in sports and physical activity communication in our Borough. WHSPAA was set up in 2004 bringing together all those interested in this vital area: from clubs, schools, sports facilities providers, University and College, Borough Council, Herts Sports Partnership and local police and NHS, all have found that working together each achieves more. With very limited financial support and only occasional funding from Sport England, WHSPAA has survived, grown and developed to reach out to the many people who want to engage in and be stimulated by our shared interests. As well as the organisations identified above, there are now well over 200 clubs registered on our website: many have attended our Club Forums and joined in our organised events

Hercules Triathlon & Festival of Sport

– and what tremendous local support for last year’s Olympics and ‘10 Days of Sport and Culture’ when clubs opened their doors to anyone and everyone. So we have moved from our newsletter of some 600 copies, 3 times a year to this our flagship magazine with 10,000 copies 4 times a year – a more than 10-fold increase. As with all previous newsletters, though, it is the input from all WHSPAA members that will make sure we succeed. It will have the big advantage of the years of experience and professionalism of the everyone’s a WINNER team maximising the benefits to advertisers, article writers and our readers. So, have a good read, keep it a while and it read again - it’s that sort of magazine now - and then, because we want to continue improving it, send us your comments. Dave Bartlett - Chairman, WHSPAA

SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS Bowls could be the most sociable of many sports played today with many clubs in the local area.

Bowls - perhaps the most sociable of all sports? Although bowls is a game of skill and technique, it is possible to have a very enjoyable game after only an hour’s instruction. Contrary to the usual image, it is not just a sport for the elderly, in fact, most of the national and world champions are in their 20s and 30s.

Parkside Bowls Club

De Havilland Bowls Club

Parkside Bowls Club is based at King George V Playing fields in Beehive Lane, Welwyn Garden City. The two greens are maintained by Finesse Leisure in conjunction with the Welwyn/ Hatfield Council and are open to the public.

The de Havilland Bowls Club, while being proud of its history and tradition (originally established in 1937 as the men-only Bowls Section of the de Havilland company) is very different from the original in that it is now fully mixed, and plays on a new green next to Club de Havilland in the University of Hatfield campus.

Parkside is a mixed club and welcomes members of all ages and abilities, from absolute beginners to the very experienced. The club is affiliated to Bowls England through Herts. County Bowling Association and have a mixed triples team in the Welwyn/ Hatfield League. The ladies are affiliated to the St. Albans & District Ladies Bowling Association and enter a team in their triples league. Members of the club can partake in Club, W/H League and District competitions. The club holds “roll-ups” three times a week and has a full fixture list of friendly matches with other Hertfordshire clubs. They also hold club galas which are lighthearted and encourage newer bowlers to get involved. The 2013 season begins on Monday, April 15th 2013 and new members would be very welcome. If you would like to try bowling, we are hoping to have taster sessions on Saturday mornings during late April and May. If you would like more information regarding any aspect of bowling at KGV and membership of Parkside Bowls Club, please contact Elsie Anderson, Hon. Sec. on 01707 896489.

It is a small club with some very experienced bowlers, some of whom play regularly at County and District level, and recent years have seen a good intake of new and very enthusiastic members. The club’s aim is to encourage new bowlers and build on their enthusiasm. All ages are welcome, and minor disabilities are no problem. They have a full programme of nearly 40 friendly matches with 30 local clubs (almost all are mixed games) and aim to introduce the new members to friendly games very early in their bowling career. Their members also play in the South Division County League (men), and the Welwyn-Hatfield Triples League (mixed), and put teams into many local galas. The club recognises that some new members will want to bowl seriously and aim as high as they can get, while others will just want a social sport - and social it certainly is, as almost every game finishes with a meal or at least tea and biscuits! The Club’s season starts on Saturday 20th April. Established bowlers and those who have never tried it before are all welcome. If you would like to

COACHING CORNER Local Edmonton Boxer looks to qualify for Olympics Tips from: www.badminton-information.com

Badminton

eaW is pleased to present the first of our quarterly COACHING CORNER sections that focus on the skills and techniques you will need to play your favourite sports. Our first chosen sport is Badminton and along with tips from www. badminton-information.com we bring you a beginners guide to the sport.

There are plenty of useful badminton tips to help you excel in the sport and can prove to be a mighty weapon for not just beginners but even for expert players. One of the most important techniques in the net play area is the Lunge. Here are some of the main technical aspects: Aim:The objective should be crystal clear. The aim is to get the shuttle back in to the court and trap the opponent down at the net. This will force the opponent to lift the shuttle up and short, thereby offering you an opportunity to attack. Technique: The most preferred method is to approach the net and Lunge aggressively. The racket leg must work like a brake to your movement. This act will produce the required force thereby generating the stroke with a minimum amount of racket head movement. The focus must be given on reaching out and taking the shuttle within the minimum possible time.

This will facilitate you to get the shuttle over the net and get back in to the play close to the net on the other side. When playing the shot, it is important to face the racket parallel to the floor. Grip the racket handle lightly in the fingers. You must experiment with your grip to get this movement. However, it is also necessary to impart some spin on the shuttle and making it ‘tumble’. You may move the racket head slightly in an outer motion to increase the tumble action. Lifting the racket head slightly will maximize the effect. Practice: The best way to practice is to work with a friend. To practice the technique, the feeder should stand on the service line and feed shuttles to the net both underarm and overarm. This mimics the shuttle play to the net in a game. Top tips for beginners:

- Warm-up: Preparing the body well prior to the game is important. - Practice the grip: Focus on the grip when choosing a racket. - Shuttle: The shuttle you choose should not wobble. - Base Position: Returning to a central base position is a good decision. - Play Indoors: Find a proper court to practice. - Be prepared: Badminton is an unpredictable game and you require moving in any direction within a certain period of time. So know your body limits.

Saunders and Hall clash at York Hall

Middleweight title in 2009 and challenging for British and European titles in his 31 fights.

An Olympic sport that is improving numbers at Welwyn Wheelers

RM VILLAGE FA

ganza a v ra 2013 Easter Eggst4th April 1

With the success of the GB National cycling team at the Olympics, especially the fantastic success of local girl Laura Trotts two gold medals, the number of young riders who have suddenly wanted to ride at the track at Gosling Sports Park on the club Saturday morning Go Ride sessions have been very encouraging for the Welwyn Wheelers club.

23rd March -

The two hour sessions on track bikes (fixed wheel, no brakes) became oversubscribed and extra sessions were run to accommodate the interest post Olympics. Many of these new riders joined the club to benefit from the strong coaching activities which is the hallmark of the club. At the end of September the track bikes were put away and the club winter programme got

under way using ‘road bikes on the track’ and ‘off road’ bikes on the grassed area surrounding the track. This resulted in an increased interest in young riders taking up cyclo-cross activities and racing in the Eastern Region and Central Region cyclo-cross leagues. Many of the ‘newbies’ who had joined the club after the Olympics to try track riding quickly developed into keen and competent cyclo-cross riders. The club operates on a year round basis and now has its highest ever membership and is the largest cycling club in the area. The club also had its busiest ever year with activities and racing success on road, track, time trials and cyclo-cross. Details of the clubs activities can be found on welwynwheelers. org.uk

Since CHILD UK was founded in 2005, it has continued to develop and flourish, whilst successfully achieving its aims and aspirations to make a beneficial and sustainable impact on the physical and emotional welfare of children and young people transforming their lives and enabling them to fulfil their potential to create a better future society. We believe the essential elements of achieving our aim are building confidence and self-esteem. We encourage high levels of participation in our activities by satisfying young people’s needs and interests, and enhancing their enjoyment. We inspire children and young people to have a positive interest in Sport and the Performing Arts, by providing the means to develop the infrastructure and facilities required within communities. We

deliver innovative programmes using dedicated professionals. PERFORMING ARTS • MUSIC • DANCE Local musician Ben Browne is going places in the music industry. eaW caught up Ben for a chat.

Interview with local musician Ben Browne Ben Browne is a very unique musician indeed. He is an 18 year old, up and coming blues guitarist/musician & R&B singer from the local area who has played in numerous local gigs and festivals including the successful Kaleidoscope Festival of 2012, the Corn Exchange in Hertford and a special performance at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage supporting their annual Black History Month variety show “Celebrate”.

and began to teach myself. I bought myself a very cheap low quality microphone so I could start recording my voice and experimenting with different effects. I was really into Hip-Hop at that point so it was good to get some of my early ideas and lyrics developed’.

Benjamin Browne has always loved music from a young age, and as he told eaW magazine, ‘I grew up with R&B music really, but with my mum being a big fan of Reggae music coupled with my Caribbean roots, that was mostly what I played’.

Explaining what this year could bring Ben told us, ‘2013 is a going to be a big year for me. I’m going to be working harder than ever this year and the songs and the live performances that are coming up are going to be so crazy. I’ll be involved in the Food & Drink Festival in Welwyn with a full length performance by me, with the Kaleidoscope organization supporting me.

Ben continues, ‘when I was in the first few years of high school I wanted to start creating compositions for myself so I started off by getting used to several production programmes on my computer

At school Ben was still unsure of his future career path until he found he particularly liked Blues music and decided to become a Blues guitarist and musician.

of music from gritty alternative rock to slow laced emotional blues ballads. Up tempo R&B jams (me) and lively Californian pop punk bangers. I will also be involved in the Hatfield scene and the “Rendezvous” venue this spring. To contact Ben email him at: ben.browne@hotmail.co.uk

A theatrical experience at The Barn Theatre The Barn Theatre, situated in Handside Lane, Welwyn Garden City has been in existence for 80 years on the site of an old Barn. It is well known for producing high quality non-professional plays. Modern drama, farce, comedy, Shakespeare & Pantomime all feature in the Barn’s season. With a thriving membership of 600 including 3 youth groups it has a genuine warm, theatrical feel to it. The theatre is run by enthusiastic volunteers who ensure the 10 plays performed each season from September to July are to a very high standard. Whether it’s on stage, backstage, front of house or box office, there are opportunities for all to take part. The auditorium seats 145, and whilst not the London Palladium, is very comfortable and welcoming. Sets are made in the workshop; props and stage furniture are sourced from the Barn’s own stores whilst the costumes, which can be hired out, come from the self-

contained Festival Costumes department. During the season the theatre is a hive of activity. With one show each month there are usually 2 or 3 plays rehearsing at any one time in one of the 2 rehearsal rooms or on the stage whilst the set takes shape. Each play runs for 9 performances starting with a member’s night on Friday and ending the following Saturday when there is usually a matinee performance. A whole army of people help run each production and without them shows could not be performed. Backstage, lighting, sound, Box office, front of house managers and stewards are all an integral part of the show team. Part of the Barn theatrical experience is to have a drink in the quaint, welcoming bar, staffed by volunteers. You can be assured of a good evening’s entertainment when visiting the Barn. They are always looking for more people to join them. For more information go to www.barntheatre.co.uk

If you love theatre and enjoy an active social life come and join us at the Barn Theatre Club Based in the historic ‘Barn’ building on Handside Lane in Welwyn Garden City, the Barn Theatre is a hive of activity, providing a focus for local theatrical arts. Whether you like to act, get involved backstage or front of house, or simply enjoy watching high quality amateur drama, you can make new friends, take on new challenges, learn new skills and generally have fun at the Barn Theatre. The life of the club is centred around the 10 plays staged in each year’s season, spanning from September to July, along with the running of this fascinating and beautiful grade II listed building. There are many roles that you can join in; from running the bar, providing costume for the shows, acting, gaining technical skills on lighting and sound and a host of other jobs connected with putting on the plays and helping to run the building. The social side of the club is centred on the bar where we include special members’ evenings and the monthly ‘Singers at the Barn’ event held on the first Sunday evening of each month. We also have a thriving youth group for 11-14 and 14-21 year olds. There is lots of further information on our website www.barntheatre.co.uk. Why not take a look?
