SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS WHSPAA, HSP and Herts Sports Village are encouraging businesses to have fun after work this summer.

Still time to make the office ‘after work’ Touch Rugby and Hockey events. WHSPAA partners HSP and Herts Sports Village this summer present a great opportunity for local businesses to get involved in your not so average after work sport session. It’s your opportunity to round up the more unusual sporting suspects, grab your kit and get involved in a bit of fun, informal activity. The programme isn’t looking for the office athletes (although

they can still come along), it is more those who want a laugh, try something new and aren’t scared of being ‘runners up’. The programme is being deliver by three National Governing Bodies in a tournament style sports sessions at Hertfordshire Sports Village, Hatfield. The three activities included a Turbo10 Cricket tournament on the 17th June, a Touch Rugby tournament on the 24th June and a Rush Hockey tournament

on the 1st July. Every team will receive a free team coloured t- shirt and will be invited to mini presentation & refreshments in the de Havilland lounge after each tournament. Entering a team in any tournament costs £20, and with a minimum team of six people required, it’s less than the cost of a pint each for a couple of hours of sport. Or, if you’re up for it, £50 gets you a team in all three tournaments.

Rules are kept basic, and the games move fast with time to rest in between… It’s corporate sport, but not as you know it! To register please visit www. sportinherts.org.uk/activeoffices and get your team booked on. For further information please contact Shelley Woods on email: s.woods4@herts.ac.uk or call 01707 281005.

Hercules Triathlon & Festival of Sport hailed a success

Swim, Run, Cycle at Stanborough Park Welwyn Track League gets off to good start The Welwyn Track League at Gosling Sports Park is off and running for this season with clubs from far afield battling it out on the track every Friday evening. There has been a significant increase in youth numbers compared to last year and the league is now open to riders from a wide range of clubs and caters for both adults and youth riders. Youth riders are segregated into three groups based on age and ability and each group competes in four races per evening with a similar system run for senior and junior riders. The clubs strong contingent of young riders - from under 16s to under 10s - are also very active and compete in weekend closed circuit racing events at Hillingdon, Milton Keynes, Redbridge and the new circuit at Elveden. The club promoted one of the three BC National

4

Omnium series meetings at Gosling Sports Park in May in which the clubs young riders produced the winner in three of the age groups and then followed this by racing in the two remaining series meetings at Herne Hill and Brighton with similar results. Their success is a great credit to the efforts and commitment of the loyal band of qualified club coaches. Many of these young riders took up cycle racing in late 2012 as a result of the cycling coverage at the Olympics The club promotes a range of ‘open events’ including a road race on a course near Bedford, a hilly time trial on Good Friday, a Tuesday evening 10 mile ‘time trial’ on a local circuit plus two National series track events. Training and coaching activities are run on a ‘round the year’ basis at the Gosling Sports Park Velodrome. Details of the clubs activities will be found on welwynwheelers.org.uk

The Welwyn Hatfield Festival of Sport was hailed as a huge success as 1000s of active people descended Stanborough Park for the Hercules Triathlon event. The great day of sport was organised by Hercules Events in partnership with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and it attracted hundreds of competitors from children to GB members. There was a wide range of events, including three triathlon’s, three open water swim races (3km, 5km and 7km), a 100km cycle ride, 10km run and a children’s 1.5km fun run. The event kicked of with hundreds of enthusiastic triathletes plunging into Stanborough Lake to swim the 750m before mounting their bikes for a 40km cycle, then embarking on the third leg of their race with a 10km run. At 8.30am cyclists formed at the start line to set of for 100km cycle across Hertfordshire, the leaders returning within three

and a half hours. At 9am, attention turned back to the lake where the open water swimmers undertook races of up to 5km swims. Men and women competed on an equal footing and in the 3,000m race, the first three home were women. Within an hour the runners for the 10km race were forming, but for many the highlight of the day was the 1.5km children’s fun run that attracted many young athletes from local Welwyn and Hatfield Schools. Thanks has to be given to the many people who gave up their time to support the event including Welwyn Hatfield Borough council, PC Rupert Gadd of Herts Police, the Finesse Leisure Team, Jenny Colledge and the RAF cadets and Peter Lansdown and the Royal Marine cadets. Planning is already underway for next year’s Festival of Sport, which promises to be bigger and better.

Hatfield Queen Elizabeth RFC continue to build With a solid season from the clubs two senior teams completed for another year, the club can look back on a good season where its membership, organisation and playing standard continued to improve. The first team had a battling season finishing sixth in Herts Middlesex third division after some hard fought tight losses limited their league aspirations as well as a semi final vs Watford in the Herts RFU Presidents Trophy. The second team gained five players that had never played rugby before and

another eight players returning to the game. On the field the second team finished seventh in their Herts RFU Merit table and also reached the semi-final of their league cup against Hemel Hempstead fourths. The continued support from Neil Carroll at the Town Inn also allowed the club to put on a busy social calendar including children’s Halloween and Christmas parties and several club nights culminating in the clubs annual dinner dance. When Hatfield Queen Elizabeth RFC’s President Robin Nicholson passed away in November last year, instead of asking for flowers at the funeral, Robin’s family thought it more fitting to ask for donations towards a memorial fund to support Hatfield QE in the future. Through subsequent discussions with the club and family, it was decided that Hatfield QE should not be the only club to benefit from Robin’s Fund and that it

should make a difference to as many small underfunded rugby clubs as possible. The Robin’s Fund remit has thus expanded to accept grant applications from clubs nationwide which, with a little help, could develop into key parts of their communities. To give the fund the best possible start, a spectacular launch event has been organised for Robin’s Fund at The May Fair Hotel in London. The British & Irish Lions themed dinner on Thursday 20th June (coinciding with the eve-of-the-eve of the first Test Match) will be hosted by former rugby star Martin Bayfield and will feature a number of rugby celebrities. eaW’s budding junior journalist Elena Williams (14) tells you what teenagers can do this summer.

Having teenage summertime fun During the summer holidays teenagers like me partake in many different activities and days out. It’s a time for fun, ice cream and meeting up with friends.

Playday 2013 will return to Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City on Wednesday 7th August as we celebrate this national day for play in the UK. From 10am until 4pm there will be were activities galore for children and young people of all ages. This year the activities will be split into different activity zones, from the under 5’s zone with soft play, story and rhyme times to leisure and sports zones for the older children which will include a Bouncy Castle Slide, Brazilian Soccer workshops and Go Karts; plus fun taster music sessions and dance workshops, face painting and a full day’s timetable of sports activities. Other activities will be based around the national Change4Life PlayDays_A5_2013_Layout 1 29/05/2013 12:38 Page 1

initiative, with games and workshops based on healthy eating and nutrition and information on staying safe when playing inside and outside the home. The council are working with several partners including Child UK, Mill Green Museum, Finesse Leisure and local Children’s Centres, Herts Music Service, Fire Service to put on a day to remember for all the family. But what’s YOUR idea of a good summer holiday? Shopping trips? Holidays? For me, its outgoing day trips like laser tag and theme parks. But there’s many other activities kids my age love to do. If you love adventurous days out then I recommend the Merlin Annual Pass. This pass pays for itself in 4 visits, so it’s a great deal if you’re a thrill seeker or just love visiting attractions. The reason I love Merlin Passes is because they have locations everywhere, so no matter where you live there’s always one nearby. If you live in London there are great ones to visit, like Madame Tussauds, the London Dungeon, the London Eye and Sea Life Aquarium. But if you’re willing to make the trip, my personal favourite is Thorpe Park with their new ride The Swarm, its well worth the journey! However if you’re looking for something closer to home, I suggest the Delta Force Paintball – Oakwood, with another location in North London. It’s great for any occasion really, and with trip advisor rating it five stars you know you can trust it for a great day out.

I also like Paradise Wildlife Park and Willows Farm. If karting is your idea of fun then Rye House offers it all. Although I’ve suggested varying activities, nothing can really beat a great park. There are always things to do! Whether it’s taking a peaceful walk or cycle to simply meeting friends. But one of my personal favourites is Stanborough Park and lakes.. They host so many great activities, there’s always something to do no matter what your preferences. One of my personal favourites is the sailing. So summing it up into a neat bundle, there are always fun things to do during the summer holidays whether on big pounds or small pocket money. So make sure that you can go out and experience it, because that’s what the summer holidays is about to a 14 year old.

20th July - 1st Sept

Our local clubs and organisations are putting on a host summer of activities for all ages to enjoy, as you can see in this magazine. Many of our clubs report membership increases as a result of the Olympic Legacy. This month Sport England reported the half year results of the 7 year national Active People Survey, these are: • 15.3 million people played sport at least once a week. This result represents a 1.4 million increase compared with 2005/06;

Find your way out of our A-maize-ing Maze!

• Continuing the improvements we have seen since 2009/10, 3.9 million 16-25 year olds now play sport once a week;

● NEW The Farmyard - animal feeding and handling ● NEW Toddler Town - under cover play the kids will love ● JUST FOR THE SUMMER Goat Racing - no kidding! ● Summer Sports Day Races ● Young Drivers Zone ● Captain Chicken’s Egg Dodge ● Ride on Rabbit Racers ● Animal Feeding Area ● Childrens Show ● Frisbee Golf ● Woolly's Workout Agility Play Trail ● Country Fun Fair ● Childrens Disco ● Build ‘n Play ● Adventure Play ● Tristan the Runaway Tractor ● Pan for Gold ● Scarecrow’s Animal Friends ● Bird-o-batics Falconry Display ● Woolly Jumpers indoor play barn OOF RPR S E H T W WEA WILLO

The WHSPAA, Borough Council and Herts Sports Partnership websites all list funding streams to help clubs develop and increase participation. For example, Sport England has grants up to £10,000 to develop sports clubs and there is ‘Community Games’ funding from Herts Sports Partnership which is all about supplying small amounts of money to bring people together to try new sporting and arts activities and about having FUN! Also, WHSPAA has signed up with Utility Warehouse to enable clubs to provide discounts to their members while generating income for the club (please see our website).

• 6.8 million women played sport once a week, 536,600 more than 2005/06;

We've acres of under cover fun too!

We will have to wait for final results in December to see if they show a different story.

However, the proportion of people in Welwyn Hatfield taking part in three-times-a-week sport and physical activity - enough to minimise risk of diseases, such as, heart attack, stroke, diabetes and some cancers – at just 21.6%, has not increased since 2007.

But making sports happen is not all about funding: membership of WHSPAA facilitates networking between clubs, schools, sports facilities, the Borough Council, and helping each other. Information for clubs and individuals can be found on our website: www.welhatsports. org.uk. There, people can find details and links of our 200+ clubs and more than 20 organisations. Enjoy!

Gosling Sports Park’s local star set to shine in the world of tennis.

Indianna Jane Spink Indianna started to play tennis in the hall at home at age of two showing lots of early promise with a keen eye, excellent timing and an eagerness to hit a sponge ball as hard as she could. Being raised in a large tennis playing family Indianna spent many hours in the garden practising on a swing ball and playing with her older brothers on a mini court. At the age of four, Indianna joined

the Mini Tennis Programme for talented children at the Gosling Tennis International High Performance Centre (IHPC) in Welwyn Garden City. Since then, Gosling Academy and Hertfordshire LTA have provided Indianna with significant support through High Performance funding and the Pathway to Tarbes Scheme. In May 2010 Indianna was invited to the LTA National Tennis Centre at Roehampton, London and was selected as a young national player and earned herself a place on the AEGON FutureStars Programme securing maximum funding available for her age to assist with the costs of her tennis training development programme. Her first major achievement was at 8 years 2 months during December 2010 when she won the ‘9 and Under’ National Tournament at Tipton Sports Academy in Birmingham - playing the

top sixteen girls from England, Scotland and Wales. Since then, Indianna has gone on to win many major tournaments and earning the title of National Champion last summer in the girls 10 and under. Earlier this month Indianna was selected by the LTA to represent GB playing in a friendly U12 four Nations event in Belgium. GB comfortably won overall. Indianna performed extremely well and received a special Peak Player Trophy for her overall performance. This was an amazing achievement for her age of 10 years and five months. Indianna will start full time tennis and education at Gosling IHPC in March which will be critical to her future success if she is to compete against other young players from around the world who are already on full time tennis programmes. Establishing good technique and the correct physical conditioning at an early age is vital, so that long term injuries suffered by so many professional players are avoided.

Indianna is the National Champion in the girls 10 and under age group

The next five years will be critical to the success of Indianna’s tennis career. It is hoped that her development will continue at Gosling IHPC ensuring that her training and competitive programme is structured year on year to achieve a consistent high level performance and success. In 2015, Indianna will be thirteen at which time her aim will be to compete at internationally renowned tournaments such as the Orange Bowl in Florida and then onto qualifying for top world junior tournaments. In return, Indianna would promote a positive role model for others with her courage, determination and ability to make hard yet smart decisions. Indianna would offer a winning and positive exposure for any sponsor wishing to promote this opportunity.

Football News for new season: Young Cypriot lad wraps up glove deal

New keepers glove hits the market Goalkeeper Glove manufacturer The One Glove is launching its new range of products with the help of 16 year old Cypriot Zak Voskou. Since starting to trade in 2004 the company has seen sales of its gloves take off and they’ve even been worn on the International stage. Company director Miles Leighton told us “For the launch we wanted to showcase the new gloves by using high quality young talent - which is where

14

Zak comes in, and we’ve already seen an uptake of the new gloves by keepers both young and old at a variety of clubs – from Colchester to Tranmere to Tottenham. Leighton puts the growing reputation of the company down to the quality of the gloves and the competitive pricing. He continues “Good gloves cost a lot and offering a very high quality product at a price point well below our competitors has been one of our real strengths.”

eaW • JUN | JUL | AUG 2013

Leighton is pleased with the reception the new gloves have received both in the UK and abroad and continues “Zak’s been offered the opportunity, when he’s a little older, to play in a couple of the countries we are gaining a foothold in – so it’s a great partnership.” The Company are now sponsoring the youngster whose recognition is another boon for Cypriot sport at a time when Everton star Leon Osman is a leading light and with the amazing success of APOEL is

last season’s Champion’s League still fresh in the mind. The newest range of gloves are called ‘Pure’, incorporating a type of latex so new that even the major glove manufacturers have yet to use it. The new Pure glove can be purchased from the company’s website -

SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS Building partnerships in cricket through a successful merger between two local cricket clubs

At the end of last season Hatfield Crusaders Cricket Club were approached by Hatfield Cricket Club with the idea of a possible merger. Both clubs had found it hard in the recent past to fulfil their third team fixtures. When the clubs merged it reduced the Saturday Saracens Herts league teams down to five from six, it will hopefully make it easier to fill the sides each week also resulting in stronger sides being fielded.

would be a great opportunity for both clubs with a sharing of experience, facilities, players and ideas to help improve and shape the future with a much bigger club. The merged club now has three ECB level 2 coaches to help develop the junior section of the club add to the already successful under 15’s with an under 13’s and 11’s. Training nights will be more organised in all aspects of cricket from batting and bowling to fielding and catching exercises, bowling machines will be used to improve batting techniques and a catching cradle for wicketkeeper practice.

If enough players are available the club may also put out a Saturday friendly side. The merger will also help offer both league and friendly matches on Sunday along with an increase The club hopes to integrate is mid week 20/20 matches and players from both clubs quickly colts games and so offering into one club under the new plenty of cricket for the merged name of Hatfield & Crusaders clubs’ members. Hatfield Crusaders and Hatfield Cricket Club have merged as one to the QE2 hospital being the hub of our new club. Indoor net practice sessions have started and attendance is good, there is real buzz with a gelling of players and friendly banter which is great to see and bodes well for the future. We want to improve the club and encourage more people to join us and enjoy cricket within the area. The Clubs’ Chairman Alan Dudman and Secretary Bob Connor represent both former clubs at a high level and are working hard behind the scenes to have the club ready for the new season. The task they have is a big one, organising a club of this size is never easy. But they have taken up the challenge well, already attending various meetings and putting plans in action to help a smooth transition.

Former Hatfield Crusaders CC chairman Bob Connor and former Hatfield CC chairman Alan Dudman celebrate the merger of the two clubs to form Hatfield & Crusaders CC

The future is looking bright for the club. After consultation with Mansell who will be carrying out the QE2 Hospital refurbishment have agreed to help the club with improving the car park facilities and assistance in purchasing much needed equipment for improving the wicket and outfield.

Becky competed at the Elite European Championships in Germany on the 11th and 12th May 2013 and according to her chat with eaW, “had an absolutely amazing time and enjoyed every minute of it”. It was a 2 day competition and the top 5 went through to the finals on the Sunday. Becky’s division consisted of 17 amazing teams and when the team were called 1st place on the first day she couldn’t believe they were qualifying through to the finals the next day. On Sunday the routine went well again but the other teams came back fighting, and the team ended up placing 3rd place in Europe and won a bid for the World Championships 2014 in Orlando, Florida. Becky felt the team did really well and made the UK proud. “I

My earliest recollection of being taught to swim, at the tender age of 5 years, was at the local baths in Altrincham, Cheshire. I had to wear a wide webbing belt around my waist which had a large metal ring attached. A rope was threaded through the ring which in turn was attached to a long pole. I entered the shallow end and was then dragged along the length of the pool by the tutor who shouted instructions and encouragement to me from the side.

Hatfield Swim Centre. She asked me if I would come and help her into the water and to assist her in the changing room. We both enjoyed our time in the pool relaxing and mingling with other members.

This may seem a bizarre way to learn to swim by today’s standards. However, I was quick to learn and during my school years was soon actively taking part in galas, winning trophies and medals without signs of stress. In later years at my senior school, I represented Middlesex and Southern Counties and on two occasions joined a team representing England in Holland with dreams of Olympic endeavour. However, this was not to be.

I have now been a Member and a Volunteer with the Platypus Swimming Club for 17 years. At nearly 77 years of age, I still have a competitive edge and get a real buzz out of competing in the diving and swimming competitions Platypus is involved in during the year. I would add Platypus is not just about competitive swimming; in fact the majority of members come purely for the exercise, to swim, relax and generally enjoy themselves. I am proud to be a member of this club which has given me many happy hours.

Many years later my interest in swimming was re-kindled when a close friend suffered a stroke after a minor ear operation. Soon afterwards she joined the Platypus Swimming Club, which caters for people of all ages and disabilities at the

Roller Derby – Currently Taking The World By Storm! Hertfordshire’s first roller derby league was founded in Hatfield in 2010 by a small group of like-minded woman. The league is now made up of over 40 fulltime members and is constantly developing and expanding. Hell’s Belles Roller Girls is the name of the league’s A team. Hatfield Leisure Centre and Roller City in Welwyn Garden City host the league’s weekly, vigorous training sessions. The Belles bout against other leagues on a regular basis keep an eye on the league website (www.hertsrd.co.uk) or their social sites for details of upcoming events. Public bouts are family friendly and exciting to watch - your local roller girls would love your support! Roller derby is known for it’s refreshingly inclusive and friendly

Festival for kids with learning difficulties at Stanborough On Tuesday 23rd April 17 children from Lakeside, Woodside and Breakspeare, came to Stanborough for a festival led by the Higher Sports Leaders in Year 13. Other sports leaders also came from Monks Walk, Onslow and Sir Frederic Osborn schools to support the group. Our Sports Leaders knew it would be an extremely difficult task working with these children; all in wheelchairs and with very few having any major muscle movement or any speech. The HSLA students also used this event as a Sky Sports Living Project, which meant they were

A highdenier fabric gives greater durability to the centre section while the side supports use a perforated material for an improved level of comfort.

PERFORMING ARTS • MUSIC • DANCE eaW magazine catches up with Andrea Campusano from APEX DANCE & PERFORMING ARTS to ask her about her new venture in Central Herts. It’s important to mention CoachMark once again in eaW magazine as the scheme for all sports coaches in Hertfordshire, in particular those looking to work in schools and on funded projects.

Apex Dance present Celebrity Dance workout at University of Hertfordshire

Herts Sports Partnerships runs the scheme which is run in collaboration with Hertfordshire County Council, to help coaches gain access to schools and to safeguard young people who take part in sporting activity. For CoachMark clearance, coaches must individually register on the Coaching Herts database (www.coachingherts.org.uk) and provide evidence that they meet minimum standards for deployment. Herts Sports Partnership staff can arrange to meet coaches to carry out the necessary checks, either at verification sessions or by appointment. For further information, contact Rob Hardwick, Coaching Development Manager with the Herts Sports Partnership, on 01707 281204 or via email at r.d.hardwick@herts.ac.uk.

If you love theatre and enjoy an active social life come and join us at the Barn Theatre Club Based in the historic ‘Barn’ building on Handside Lane in Welwyn Garden City, the Barn Theatre is a hive of activity, providing a focus for local theatrical arts. Whether you like to act, get involved backstage or front of house, or simply enjoy watching high quality amateur drama, you can make new friends, take on new challenges, learn new skills and generally have fun at the Barn Theatre. The life of the club is centred around the 10 plays staged in each year’s season, spanning from September to July, along with the running of this fascinating and beautiful grade II listed building. There are many roles that you can join in; from running the bar, providing costume for the shows, acting, gaining technical skills on lighting and sound and a host of other jobs connected with putting on the plays and helping to run the building. The social side of the club is centred on the bar where we include special members’ evenings and the monthly ‘Singers at the Barn’ event held on the first Sunday evening of each month. We also have a thriving youth group for 11-14 and 14-21 year olds. There is lots of further information on our website www.barntheatre.co.uk. Why not take a look?
