THE MAGAZINE FOR SPORT & LEISURE IN WELWYN HATFIELD. Welcome to this 3rd and Autumn edition of our WHSPAA-EaW magazine. What a great summer! Not only the weather, but the number and variety of activities locally for all ages. The amazing Festival of Sport at Stanborough with its Triathlon that brought in thousands including, not least our Borough Council’s Lead Member for Sport Councillor Darren Bennett and MP Grant Shapps. In the Herts Youth Games, in July after practising for weeks, our teams did us proud with two silver medals being in Badminton and Netball and two bronze medals in Fencing and Table Tennis. National Play Day, in August, with support from partners, was the biggest ever with

Now we are moving into the cooler part of the year and while the outdoor sports are going from strength to strength as you can read, this edition will include a focus on ‘In from the Cold’ for those who like their sports indoors at this time of the year. Herts Sports Partnership are supporting our clubs, schools and coaches with a number of programmes, too. For example for head teacher’s there is the ‘Keeping the 2012 Legacy Alive in Hertfordshire’s Schools’, 27th September. Do have a look at their website: www.sportinherts.org.uk. Three of Welwyn Hatfield’s seven county councillors have kindly provided funding to help clubs in their division that need development support, these and their divisions, are: Lynn Chesterman, Welwyn Garden City South; Maureen Cook, Hatfield North ; Richard Smith, Welwyn. If your club is in any of these 3 Divisions and needs development funding please email me for further details and the County Councillors’ Fund application form. While we have heard from many people that ours is a great magazine that fills an important gap in communicating our local sport and physical activities, we would like to hear from you, what do you think? Just before the summer period eight students each from Stanborough, Applecroft and Lakeside met on the fields at Applecroft Primary School for an exciting festival of football.

The Year 5 children from Applecroft demonstrated some great skills and great understanding. The Year 9 children from Stanborough were very patient and gave sympathetic passes to every player. The Year 13 students from Stanborough organised their teams brilliantly and made sure everyone was happy. The Lakeside children had a great time and celebrated every pass, shot and goal with exuberance!

The students ranged from Year 5 to Year 13 and after a quick introduction they were mixed up and put into 4 teams. 2 games then took place using 2 pitches. The students managed to

PHYSIO CORNER

eaW magazine is pleased to bring you the first PHYSIO CORNER bought to you by Bodybalance Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic in Hatfield. Bodybalance Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic has been providing physiotherapy and sports massage to the elite, serious and social sports people of Hertfordshire for the past 14 years. Our team work with some of the top athletes from the UK and

across the world; bringing our experience to our clients in Hertfordshire, including Team GB and English Institute of Sport athletes, Arsenal Ladies FC, Hertfordshire Mavericks, Oaklands Basketball Academy, Hertfordshire Talented Athlete Program and TASS.

This time of year, as the days start to cool and people ease themselves back into their winter sports, our clinic is filled with a mix of acute sprains and strains from pre-season training, and longer term niggles that people had hoped might go away over the summer holidays but haven’t (for one reason or another)! Our summer months were kept busy by dozens of tennis players, triathletes and cyclists – and those whose recovery process involves much longer term rehabilitation, such as after knee or shoulder surgery. We’re looking forward to bringing eaW readers a regular column with advice on common

sports injuries and useful tips on how to prevent them in the first place. Please feel free to email us with any questions or suggested topics. Based at Hertfordshire Sports Village, our team of experienced sports physiotherapists offer all our clients the same skills, expertise and dedication – whether elite sportspeople at the top of their game, serious competitors striving for a PB, or simply someone who just wants to get going again. SPORT • LEISURE • LIFESTYLE & FITNESS The Welwyn Wheelers signed off their season in September and now look ahead to the winter.

Welwyn Wheelers season update The last track racing meeting in the Welwyn Wheelers summer programme was run in mid September to finish off a successful season at the Gosling Sports Park velodrome. The track training sessions on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings have been well supported and the club coaches have worked hard to ensure that the riders benefit from the activity. The club made its annual trip to Assen in Holland in July where a large number of the clubs youth riders, well supported by parents and club coaches, took part in the 6 day Assen International Youth Tour. Racing takes place on closed roads with around 700 riders from a wide range of countries split into a number of age related categories with racing on various courses. The trip was enjoyed by

everyone and plans are already being made to attend the 50th Anniversary event in 2014. The Wheelers winter programme is now under way and one of main activities will be participating in cyclo-cross events in the local East and Central Leagues. Welwyn Wheelers are promoting an East Region Cyclo-cross event at Stanborough Park on Saturday October 5th which will see over 200 entries split into various age and ability groups racing in events ranging from 20 minutes for under 12 riders to one hour for the ‘elite senior’ riders. The winter programme also includes using road bikes on the track at Gosling Sports Park plus off road and road rides to keep riders fit and active through the winter. What inspired you to open the opening of Platypus all those nearly 50 years ago?

The Platypus Swimming Club was founded in 1966 to enable disabled people and volunteer helpers of all ages and abilities including non-swimmers from the town of Hatfield and the surrounding area to enjoy the benefits of swimming in safety and privacy.

An awareness of the benefits of water therapy exclusively for the use of people with disabilities. This led to a small group of very enthusiastic and dedicated people taking the opportunity to form the Club in 1966 when the Hatfield R.D.C. agreed to make the new Hatfield Swim Centre available for two dedicated hours each week.

eaW meets with the team from Platypus to dive a little deeper, and find out a little more information about the club and the stories it has to tell. Why should people choose Platypus?

What have been the success stories?

Members of all abilities including non-swimmers are encouraged to have fun and enjoy the benefits of swimming in safety and privacy. Members range from very young children with congenital and mental disabilities to car accident, stoke-victims and 80-year olds and above suffering simply from the effects of age.

Too numerous to mention but three come to mind: Some non-swimmers have learnt to swim and now attend competitive galas increasing their self-esteem.

For the more competitive members the Club actively competes in several galas at local, regional and National level

One of our members fell out of bed at a local hospital, broke his neck and was told he would never walk or swim again. Now, a few years later and with lots of encouragement, help and coaching, he is able to walk short

Less than 40% of coaches are female, and in many sports that figure is even lower. This inequality in the gender of sports coaches is welldocumented and the reasons for it are complex. Finance is just one of the issues, and coaching courses can be expensive – it costs over £300 just to qualify in some sports! The CoachMark Bursary pays

half of course costs (up to a maximum of £500) and, thus far, nearly £7,000 has been paid to 26 coaches in 15 different sports and physical activities. The CoachMark Bursary is run by Herts Sports Partnership (HSP). Normally, the bursary is open to all coaches - male or female! However the Herts Coaches Association, who work closely with HSP, identified women coaches as a priority, and a ‘female only’ round of the bursary is proving to be popular. To find out more about the CoachMark Bursary, go to www.coachingherts.org.uk.

GIRLS GET SPORTY Coaches and players inspire girls to get sporty! During late August more than 100 young girls, aged from 1115 joined experienced players and coaches from Hertfordshire Mavericks Netball Club, Arsenal Ladies Football Club and Saracens Women’s Rugby Club for a day of sporting fun, skills and games. This exciting event, a new initiative specifically designed to encourage girls to take up a new sport in a fun and inspirational environment, was held at the Hertfordshire Sports Village. Almost 40 coaches and players, many of whom are involved in

their sports at national level, led demonstrations, held skills sessions and took part in question and answer forums before each team mascot competed in an finale race! Aresenal Ladies Gunnersaurus was victorious! The free Girls Get Sporty event attracted girls from across the county and was organised in partnership with the three clubs, the Herts Sports Partnership and Hertfordshire Sports Village, the venue for the day. The girls had a fantastic day and were presented with a souvenir photograph to take away as a memento of the day. Jane Shewring of the Herts Sports Partnership was delighted with the event’s success and says about the day, ‘It’s great to see so many youngsters involved in

these three sports and we are confident that many of them will continue to play one or more of them in the future. With so many high quality coaches and players involved today, we really hope that the youngsters will be inspired and take away with them the belief that they can enjoy, improve and achieve through sport.’

teams sports, the chance to be exposed to a number of different skills required in the three sports, which they can take and develop within school and their general lives.

A Hertfordshire Coaching Bursary Scheme launched during the day. The scheme is managed by the Herts Sports Partnership and specifically encourages women to take up sports coaching and support existing female coaches to develop their skills. Women are currently under-represented among the sports coaching community and this scheme aims to go some way to redress this imbalance. Arsenal Ladies were extremely excited to be apart of the Girls Get Sporty Day at the University of Hertfordshire, alongside Saracen’s Women’s rugby and Mavericks Netball. It was great to see such a range of ages from the girls that took part in the day and all of whom were very enthusiastic throughout the day, which made our jobs of coaching them all very enjoyable.

Arsenal Ladies thoroughly enjoyed being part of the day and we all hope that the girls who took part either join a club, continue to play recreationally or at the very least had fun meeting new people and being active and healthy. If you know any girls that want to try a new sport or are interested in coaching contact the Herts Sports Partnership about opportunities to join local sessions, clubs and courses on 01707 281201 or www.sportinherts. org.uk.

Poppy Young and Heli the Rescue Helicopter 13 year old Poppy Young from Welwyn Garden City is one young lady that has already made significant steps forward in the world of fund raising for her beloved Herts Air Ambulance as well as dedicating her spare time into writing children’s books. Poppy told eaW magazine, ‘I love raising funds for my local Herts Air Ambulance Helicopter as the job that they do is fantastic. They fly several times a day in order to help rescue injured people and help take them to hospital and the Herts Air Ambulance is able to reach anywhere within the county of Hertfordshire in just 20 minutes. It flies at 150mph and is only 8 minutes from a hospital!’ Poppy goes on, ‘The work that the helicopter and its crew do can be the difference between life and death and even though

I have never needed the help of my local Herts Air Ambulance it is great knowing that they are only a phone call away. The important life saving medical equipment that they carry means that they are like a flying hospital A&E department. The amazing work that they do is only possible due to donations raised by people like you and me.’ With Poppy keen to find new ways of raising money for The Herts Air Ambulance, including cake sales, carved pumpkins, sponsored runs and even school fund raising, Poppy has now embarked on writing books about the Herts Air Ambulance called Heli the Rescue Helicopter.

Poppy (left) collecting her Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Certificate look to publish one of Poppy’s stories online so please look out for further details sometime soon. Poppy concluded, ‘I have also been very lucky and was

awarded the Diana Award as a Champion fund raiser where I had to go up to Canary Wharf to collect my certificate. Also, last year I was awarded a Queens Diamond Jubilee Award from my local council.’

So far Poppy has written 9 different stories and has plans for many more. eaW magazine will
