WHAT’S ON: SPECIAL CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Leeds Christkindelmarkt Traditional German Christmas Market In the heart of Leeds city centre, we can find one of the most established German Christmas Markets in the UK. Set in Millennium Square, the market consists of over 40 chalet stalls with handcraft toys, jewellery and traditional German food. If you need gift ideas it’s the perfect place, but you need to know that there are a lot of people around every day so if you don’t like queues you should arrive early or at the last minute. The Otley Victorian Fair & Christmas Market Otley host an interesting Victorian Fair on Sunday 11th December (12 noon – 6pm). The first Fayre was held in 1985 and was an immediate success. European Christmas Market Manchester This market has put Manchester on the World Christmas Map, and it has become a popular place to shop. You will find 200 stalls with gifts, crafts, jewellery, clothes and food and drinks from all over the world. We also can find French bread (and profiteroles) and of course Spanish chorizo! London’s Winter Wonderland If you are lucky and you have the chance to go to London, go to Hyde Park (close to Buckingham Palace). THINGS TO DO ON A RAINY DAY THEATRE / MUSIC / CINEMA
Pantomime at the Carriageworks Theatre Pantomime is a musical‐comedy theatrical production traditionally famous in the United Kingdom and also in some countries like Australia, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Jamaica, even Gibraltar! It is mostly performed during the Christmas and New Year season. Anyway, Panto story lines and scripts typically make no reference to Christmas, and are almost always based on traditional children’s stories. This year you have in the Carriageworks Theatre “Beauty and the Beast”. You can see the show from the 2nd December to the 7th January. “A Star for Christmas” Age UK Carol Concert in Leeds Parish Church This event is a Carol Concert with live performances from Voices of the Day Community Choir, the Heritage Singers and Tingley Brass Band. The place is really lovely and it’s a unique Church. It’s not necessary to be Christian to go there because it’s just a Carol Concert for Christmas time. It takes place at the Parish Church on Saturday 10th December at 11am with refreshments afterwards from 12noon. Where: Parish Church, Kirkgate (Leeds)

MUSEUMS Leeds Art Gallery Do you like art galleries? I’ve got the perfect one! In The Headrow you can find the Leeds Art Gallery (free admission). There is a collection of 20th century British art and also there is an exiting temporary exhibition: The 2011 Northern Art Prize, an initiative for artist of the North of England. The 2011 Northern Art Prize exhibition runs from 25 November 2011 to 19 February 2012 at Leeds Art Gallery. The winner will be announced on 19 January 2012. Leeds City Museum A good idea on a rainy day is to go to this interactive museum. You could stand face to face with the Leeds tiger, step into Ancient Worlds to meet Nesyamun, the Leeds mummy and it’s also interesting to discover a new part of the city where we are living. THINGS TO DO ON A SUNNY DAY Tropical World in Roundhay Park Roundhay Park is situated approximately 3 miles North of Leeds city centre. This Park has two lakes, one Victorian Shelter, the ruins of a Castle and much more things that you can discover by yourself. Also included are tennis courts, a small skateboard park, sport pitches, bowling greens, the sports arena, a golf course and fishing in the larger Waterloo Lake. The admission to Roundhay Park is free and it’s open every day of the year, but there is a special part: “Tropical World”, with the largest collection of tropical plants outside Kew Gardens. You also can find there butterflies, an Amazon Tank (where lives the largest fish in tropical world), lizards, snakes and even crocodiles! There you must pay £3.30 When: Anytime

Cycling along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal – Route 66 If it’s a sunny day and you love cycling you cannot miss the opportunity to do this healthy activity. If you don’t have a bike, don’t worry! You can rent it for one day for £8 in front of the Railway Station. It’s very easy to find the route: you have to cross the Bridge End (the same that we cross to go to the EiP’s office) and follow the canal. On the towpath you will see the traffic signal “Route 66”, just follow it and enjoy the landscape and the fresh air! 3 miles out of the town, you can find Kirkstall Abbey, the largest abbey in the North of England. It has been recently restored with a new visitors centre. If you want to go to the abbey but you don’t like cycling you can go there by bus numbers 33/33a from the city centre Where: Leeds&Liverpool Canal, Leeds

RECIPE OF THE MONTH English Brownie by Eva de Luis If you like chocolate, this is one useful and easy recipe to prepare brownie and then have a sweet breakfast during the week to be strong and go volunteering!
Ingredients: • • • • • • • •
6 Tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa 1/4 Cup Butter 1 Cup Sugar 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla 1/4 Teaspoon Salt 1/3 Cup Flour 2 Eggs 1 Cup Toasted Pecans (if you want)
Method: First, in a microwavable dish, melt the ¼ cup of butter. Then stir this into the 6 Tablespoons of Unsweetened Cocoa. Then combined with this: 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/3 cup flour, ¼ teaspoon salt. Now if you want add pecans to your batter and pre‐heat the oven to 160C. Cover the baking pan with butter and then put a few tablespoons of flour or cocoa until the sides and bottom are covered. Finally put the brownie batter into the dish, and then put the pan into the oven for 35‐40 minutes. To know if it’s ready, poke the brownies with a toothpick. If the toothpick comes out clean, your brownies are happily done! Enjoy!
