WHAT’S ON HEART CENTRE (Headingley) I know that you love concerts, especially, FREE concerts! So…why not to try this one? The venue is not so far from Beechwood volunteers house and there is one concert every month. In this case it’s jazz, and the musicians are often from the jazz course at Leeds College of Music. Let’s give these young musicians the chance to try out their playing or singing and their improvisation. Good food and drink available from the café until closing (about 10.30 p.m.) The entrance is free, and it is said that the atmosphere is really friendly! So…Why not? Cost: Free When: 2nd March (Following: April 6th, May 4th, June 1st ) Where: Bennett Road (LS6) Location on the map More Info: http://www.heartcentre.org.uk/
DISCOVERING LEFT BANK LEEDS... and its Steampunk Market Probably you have no idea what it is...well, maybe you should go to discover it because at least I think it will be funny. Left Bank is a new art and events venue based in an old but renovated church building on Cardigan Road (5 minutes from Beechwood house). The volunteers who run this venue have prepared a Steampunk Market. What is it? Ok, don’t worry! I have searched it for you in wikipedia: << Steampunk is a sub‐genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. >> At least it has to be curious, so... why not? Cost: Free When: Saturday 10th of March 10:00 to 19:00 Where: Left Bank Leeds, the old red‐brick church in Cardigan Road (the cooperative’s one) More info: www.leftbankleeds.org.uk
WHAT TO DO ON A RAINY DAY ROYAL ARMOURIES MUSEUM The Royal Armouries is Britain’s national museum of arms and armour. At the Leeds Museum there are over 8,500 objects on display in five galleries: War, Tournament, Oriental, Self Defence and Hunting. This is a great place for people who loves history, but also for people who would like to learn about it. This gallery looks at the potential for a future free of arms, looking at disarmament and concepts such as “détente”. This gallery is in partnership with the Peace Museum in Bradford (maybe we can go as well) It’s totally free, beautiful and modern outside so of course it’s a good place to go when your friends or family come to visit you. If you don’t know Clarence Dock yet, this is the opportunity to visit it! Around the River Aire everything is really beautiful and different to the rest of the city. If you don’t know exactly where it is or you prefer go with someone else just tell me and I will organize a special event as soon as possible. So you don’t have any excuse! Ready? Steady? Go! Cost: Free
When: Daily 10am – 5pm
More info: http://www.royalarmouries.org/
Where: Armouries Drive (LS10)
WHAT TO DO ON A SUNNY DAY
In this month we can enjoy more sunny days or at least better weather conditions, so... it’s time to walk and visit the countryside!
SKIPTON, Gateway to the Dales Skipton is the perfect village to spend a half day. The principal attraction is their Castle of the 11th century (in the photo), which is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England. The price is quite high but worth it (£6.70). There is also an interesting market; it’s on the High Street four days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat). No visit to Skipton is complete without a visit to the canal. We’ve got it in Leeds but here you can do something else: You can join a trip along the canal! There are “public boat trips” for 60 minutes and the price is quite cheap (£6.50) but not until the end of March. If you feel rich in March (why not?), try to take a trip in a Hot Air Balloon and view the beautiful Yorkshire Dales from a totally different perspective. The price depends on the date and the company. I really encourage you to do at least the cheapest option: a walk in the Dales. It’s supposed to be a sunny day so… yes, let’s do it! Where: Skipton (between Leeds and Bradford) there are direct trains and buses (X84) from the city centre When: Any sunny day More info: www.skiptononline.co.uk
