New Exhibitions Opening Emporium Center July 2

THE ARTS & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from July 2-30. A free reception with the artists will take place on Friday, July 2, from 5 to 8 pm. Most of the works will be for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition by visiting in person or the online shop at www.knoxalliance.store. The opening reception features music by Elza Gate, a folk duo (Pat Parr and Bob Cushman) from Oak Ridge performing a wide variety of music.

Knoxville Photo 2021 in the Lower Gallery

The Arts & Culture Alliance presents the 9th annual Knoxville Photo juried exhibition featuring selected works from 36 artists throughout the region. The exhibition encompasses photographs depicting all subjects and genres, including streetscapes, cityscapes, landscapes, environmental portraiture, portraits, abstracts, and more. Joe Longobardi served as juror for the exhibition and viewed 323 images to select the exhibition. More than $1,000 in cash awards will be announced at the reception on July 2 at 6 pm. Brandon Woods: Spatium in the Upper Gallery

This exhibition of new works and research by Brandon Woods seeks to define a new artistic discipline - Spatium - for artworks such as his which bridge painting and sculpture. A number of works included in the exhibition are created on dimensional panels projecting out from the wall at exciting and unexpected angles, activating the space. Woods’ painting approach results in surfaces that change in color and composition as the viewer moves around them, bringing the viewer’s awareness to their own perceptions of space. Woods, who lives and works in Knoxville, is an interdisciplinary artist who pursues highly innovative approaches to creating works of art through an engagement with science and mathematics. He earned his MFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design and has received numerous awards and grants for his work, including a Bailey Opportunity Grant through the Arts & Heritage Fund. His work has been exhibited and collected throughout the US and internationally.

Rodney East: This and That in the Atrium

Rodney East was born in southern Indiana in 1945. He is a Vietnam Veteran and worked for Chrysler and GM before retiring. Throughout the years, he has painted seascapes, landscapes, florals, and various abstracts using primarily oils, watercolors, and acrylics. In recent months, his macular degeneration has, unfortunately, prevented him from painting. This new exhibition features East’s acrylic works. The Scent of a Woman by Vicki Love in the Display Case

In this new exhibition, Vicki Love will feature four distinct arrangements of her functional leather pieces: Shades of whites and creams celebrating the freshness of summer events; a collection of black, which will traverse the spectrum from sophisticated to whimsical, as well as Victorian with a touch of Goth; ultra girlie to denim baby; and earth tones with emphasis on texture and movement.

Artist statement: My earliest and best memories revolve around my love for nature and its beauty. During childhood, most of my free time was spent in the woods playing, fantasizing, and meditating. These lasting impressions are reflected in my work today. I spent the first 11 years pioneering the way I mold leather to create form and texture. I utilize an extensive technique in which the leather is wetted and heated to mold and then finished by gluing and sewing. This technique is used in my sculptural designs as well, allowing me to create three-dimensional leather pieces for my oneof-a-kind handbags. My handbags and garments are adorned with antler, horn, glass beads, vintage pieces, and semi-precious stones. I work exclusively with deerskin, because in my experience, it is truly the best leather - soft to the touch yet one of the most durable. My desire is that my work makes people happy. I believe that in using one of my creations, the owner will have more joy and radiate this to those with whom they come in contact; the magic of the deep woods will continue. Beyond: Michelle Barillaro on the North Wall In this new exhibition, Michelle Barillaro features paintings on wood with acrylics or oil and cold wax. Each medium lends itself to different techniques for layering and subtracting paint with household tools and brushes until the perfect composition is realized. Barillaro essentially grew up on the beach in South Florida, which deeply instilled her love for the saturated colors and tranquility of this tropical environment. The built environment also enticed Barillaro, and she moved to Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee’s School of Architecture. After completing her degree, she stayed in East Tennessee and absorbed its natural beauty. While in college, Barillaro took multiple ceramics courses and honed her sketching and drawing skills related to architecture. Abstracts have always been a constant, whether they feel soft and moody, linear and architectural, or suggest a sea or landscape. She paints the recognizable colors of Florida and the suggestion of the hills of Tennessee. Abstracts allow the viewer to see something related to their own personal experiences and dreams. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Please note that the Emporium will be closed on July 5. For more information, call 865-523-7543 or visit www.knoxalliance.com.

Cheekwood Estate & Gardens

CHEEKWOOD ESTATE & Gardens is a 55-acre botanical garden and art museum located on the historic Cheek estate just outside of Nashville. Since being converted into a museum of art and botanical garden in 1960, Cheekwood has presented world-class art exhibitions, spectacular gardens, and a historic estate unlike anything else. As one of the city’s top attractions, Cheekwood has family activities, programs, and festivals to celebrate all four seasons.

The Cheek home and its gardens were designed by Bryant Fleming in the late 1920s. The elegant Georgianstyle mansion is surrounded by lawns and terraced gardens with extensive plantings. Don’t miss the Ford Wisteria Arbor, overlooking the formal plantings and a reflecting pool - breathtaking!

There is such garden diversity on the expansive grounds, everything from roses to dogwoods to herbs. The Howe Garden, along with its stone building, was moved to Cheekwood from another area of Nashville after being donated. A dedicated Children’s Garden even has a turtle pond with a bridge for viewing! Stroll along the sculpture trail and visit one of many water features.

Nature POP! Through September 5

From acclaimed artist Sean Kenney and produced by Imagine Exhibitions, this exhibition, which runs through September 5th, features 38 sculptures made from more than 800,000 LEGO® Bricks. Inspired by the Pop art movement, Kenney’s work blurs the boundaries between austere and the everyday, drawing from a belief that everything is interconnected. This installation explores the beauty of nature through highly stylized, colorful displays that stand in striking contrast with their surroundings. Presenting a playful spin on traditional sculptural art, this exhibition is an accessible experience for all ages designed to inspire visitors to create something wonderful themselves. See how many of the pieces you can spot as you walk through the gardens!

Visitation Information

Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, located at 1200 Forrest Park outside of Nashville, is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 5 pm. At this time, visitors must purchase advanced tickets. For more information, visit www.Cheekwood.org.

Intel® Drone Light Shows to light up the evening sky during Dollywood’s Summer Celebration

WHILE GREAT Smoky Mountains National Park is well known for its synchronous fireflies, guests at Dollywood can enjoy their own synchronized performance this summer as Intel® Drone Light Shows launches hundreds of drones into the sky for a spectacular nighttime experience. The performances take place each evening during the park’s Summer Celebration through July 31st.

Dollywood’s Sweet Summer Nights is a multi-sensory drone light show that creates a symphony of light in the sky above the Pigeon Forge park. Representing a true evolution in traditional theme park entertainment, the sensational show uses nearly 400 drones to animate the spectacular Dollywood-exclusive story. The drone performance is integrated into a musically choreographed fireworks show, creating a visual and audial event of epic proportions!

As part of the Sweet Summer Nights experience, Wildwood Grove is the place to be as a DJ and energetic dancers bring fun to the streets during a 30-minute dance party that ensures every member of the family is on their feet. As the party nears its finale, the celebration takes to the sky as the drones launch into the air for an unforgettable end to the evening.

Intel® Drone Light Shows has performed on some of the world’s largest stages, including the Olympics, Coachella, and the Super Bowl. With the ability to create dynamic shapes and animations, each drone serves as a pixel of light that illuminates the night sky. Purpose-built for light shows, each drone is less than a foot in diameter, weighs less than a pound, and can produce more than four billion color combinations.

As the name implies, Dollywood’s Summer Celebration is a celebration of family fun and laughter at a place everyone loves! With later nighttime hours, families can ride Dollywood’s world-class roller coasters all day and well into the night. Visit www.dollywood.com for more information.

Why This Summer is the Perfect Time to Visit NYC

NEW YORK CITY is one of the top tourist destinations for Americans year after year, and it’s no surprise why. The thriving art, entertainment, and cultural scenes, the endless variety of international foods, and a beautiful skyline make New York City an iconic and one-of-a-kind destination. Whether you’re there for a day or a week, you’ll never be bored in the “City That Never Sleeps.”

However, major cities like NYC have felt the brunt of the pandemic’s dampening effect on travel and tourism during the past year. Fortunately, as vaccinations continue to roll out, traveling to New York City, or anywhere for that matter, is once again within reach for travelers eager to get back out there. And as it turns out, there are a lot of great reasons to put NYC back at the top of your list for a trip this summer.

1. There are fewer tourists out and about

When the pandemic hit and travel came to a halt, New Yorkers experienced their city without tourists for the first time in recent history. While travel within the U.S. is bouncing back, NYC is typically filled with tourists from all across the globe. With travel restrictions still in place in many countries where vaccine rollout hasn’t been as fast, the city will still be somewhat quiet this summer. Enjoy the museums, Times Square, shopping, restaurants, and the Statue of Liberty with few crowds - a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

2. It’s one of the most diverse cities on the planet

Did you spend your days in quarantine daydreaming about a trip to Italy, China, Australia, or Peru? Until borders are fully open again, NYC is the perfect domestic destination to satisfy all of your international culture desires. With close to 800 languages spoken, New York is one of the most diverse cities in the United States.

3. There are countless opportunities for outdoor dining

New Yorkers took to the streets quite literally when the pandemic hit. The city launched its “Open Restaurant Program” to maintain social distancing while keeping its beloved restaurants afloat. This program allows many restaurants to add seating to the sidewalk or curb lane adjacent to the restaurant. The program was so successful that Mayor de Blasio made the program permanent - here to stay beyond the pandemic. With added seating in typically small NYC restaurant spaces, this means even more opportunity for that hard-to-get dinner reservation during your trip.

4. There are a ton of cool museums

MoMA, The Museum of Natural History, the 9/11 Memorial, the Brooklyn Museum - the list goes on. Come to NYC to explore the museums, and while you’re there, don’t miss the best views of Central Park from the rooftop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (aka the Met). Each summer the museum curates a rooftop exhibition and this year’s is aesthetically pleasing for the whole family: the Alex Da Corte installation features Sesame Street’s Big Bird.

5. Central Park (Need we say more?)

Parks across all five boroughs became a gathering point for New Yorkers craving open space. This makes them not only great for experiencing nature in the heart of America’s largest metro but great for people watching as well. Central Park is a mustsee, but be sure to visit Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, Prospect Park in Brooklyn for its botanical gardens, and McCarren Park in Williamsburg to get even more of a glimpse of life as a New Yorker.

6. Brooklyn has a lot to offer

Either stay at one of Brooklyn’s cool hotels, walk the Brooklyn Bridge, take the subway, or ferry over for a day trip while you’re in Manhattan. With some of the city’s best restaurants, bars, and waterfront parks, it’s well worth it. Fun fact: Many of the brownstones you see in T.V. and film based in NYC are located in Brooklyn! Stroll some of the most picturesque neighborhoods NYC offers, such as Fort Greene, Park Slope, and Dumbo.

7. There are great places for shopping

It’s time to get out of those sweatpants and level up your wardrobe for post-pandemic living. Hit Fifth Avenue for every shopping option you can imagine or the boutiques in Brooklyn for something uniquely New York while you’re there.

Book your trip to NYC today!

Business Note

BY BRETT CAFFERTY

WE ARE EXCITED that this edition of Everything Knoxville is reaching new readers in portions of Oak Ridge and additional neighborhoods in the quickly growing Hardin Valley area.

For those who are receiving Everything Knoxville for the first time - we are celebrating our 15th year of promoting and sharing the services and expertise of area professionals and entrepreneurs, publicizing cultural events, local interest, history, what to do around town, and the good and giving work of non-profit and community organizations.

The idea to expand our readership was proposed by John at Surface Doc, a long-time advertiser who plans to establish a greater presence in the Oak Ridge area and suggested we consider widening our distribution. We thought it was worth exploring, and an inquiry among our advertisers to reach new readers and potential customers came back with an enthusiastic yes!

We appreciate the cooperative spirit among our advertiser/business partners and their support of this expansion. For our new readers, we trust that the resources and information available through Everything Knoxville will be well received, and we encourage you to support the small businesses in our communities.

As we continue to share the small business stories of Knoxville and beyond, we invite your feedback and comments as we seek to do the best job possible for our clients and readers.

Have a Happy 4th of July!

A New Way to Sculpt

MATTHEW B. DOPPELT D.O., F.A.O.C.D., F.A.A.D.

Board Certified Dermatologist

UTILIZING RADIOFREQUENCY as an energy source is one of the latest shifts in modern aesthetic medicine. InMode is the industry leader in providing cutting-edge radiofrequency powered devices to the aesthetic market. BodyTite, FaceTite, and the AccuTite handpieces are used to heat tissues from the inside out, resulting in unprecedented skin tightening (up to 36% skin contraction in published peer-reviewed clinical studies). When utilized in this manner, radiofrequency energy also results in the permanent destruction of fat cells. Thus, we are able to combine radiofrequency with tumescent liposuction (RFAL - radiofrequency assisted liposuction) to treat areas that might otherwise have required surgical excision of skin, resulting in large unsightly scars such as the arms (brachioplasty) and abdomen (abdominoplasty). Even challenging areas such as the medial thighs can now be successfully treated. All of the procedures with or without RFAL can be performed comfortably with local anesthesia. The handpieces feature real-time temperature monitoring underneath the skin and on top of the skin, which ensures optimal outcomes with incredible safety.

What is FaceTite?

In simple terms, the FaceTite procedure offers an alternative to traditional face and neck lifting. FaceTite relies on radiofrequency technology to decrease skin laxity of the face and neck. This is also a fantastic way to permanently remove fat from the neck and jowls. FaceTite is a minimally invasive procedure that can give patients a younger, more rejuvenated look with substantially less downtime and without the scars of a traditional face or neck lift. Before After

Before After

What is BodyTite?

BodyTite is the latest advance in body contouring. This minimally invasive procedure for the body shapes, contracts, and contours areas such as the abdomen, waist, arms, and thighs without the worry of large visible scars. Patients are left with excellent results without the added downtime of traditional surgery. BodyTite can be combined with tumescent liposuction and is a great solution for individuals who are looking to reduce fat without leaving behind the saggy, wrinkly skin that can come with other forms of liposuction. BodyTite permanently eliminates fat in stubborn areas while tightening the skin, helping you sculpt your body into its ultimate shape. More benefits include uniform treatment, consistent results, less bruising, swelling and pain, and shorter downtime than traditional liposuction.

What Is AccuTite?

AccuTite is the newest and smallest member of the InMode handpiece family. It is a minimally invasive skin tightening treatment. AccuTite can be used body-wide to treat smaller problem areas. It may be small, but it is mighty. Here are just a few areas of the body where AccuTite can make a difference: Just about anywhere on the face, bra fat near the underarms, wrinkled skin on arms, abdomen, knees, and thighs.

If you are wondering if one of these procedures is right for you, give us a call at 865-474-8800 and schedule a consultation. We offer numerous face and body sculpting modalities to achieve your goals.
