Mother’s Day:

Always a Good Time for Brunch

BY JEFF GOTCHER

MOTHER’S DAY is right around the corner, and most people will celebrate by going out for brunch. If you plan on going the homecooked route, be sure to pick up the supplies for a special beverage too. There is nothing that goes better with brunch than a cocktail. Here are a couple of winebased cocktails that you’ll be proud to serve to any “motherly figure” and any other guests that may arrive to celebrate.

Orange Sorbet Mimosa (virgin option available)

This vibrant twist on a classic drink is definitely a crowd-pleaser. The sorbet cuts down on the acidity, a barrier for most. It is still fresh and smooth. There is a virgin option if you want to substitute a Sprite or soda water for the kiddos or non drinkers. Serves 1. • 1 scoop of orange sorbet • Sparkling wine or champagne • Garnish: 1/4 of an orange slice

Grapefruit Mint Bellini

A good Bellini is hard to find. Too many times the elements of the drink are out of balance, so this recipe is a little advanced. Regardless, it’s a beautiful cocktail that is as equally tasty. I can confirm that it’s not quite peach season just yet when writing this article, so we’ll use grapefruit instead. Here’s an easy twist on an Italian cocktail you can never go wrong with. Do not deviate from the Campari or the Prosecco if you’re looking for authenticity. If you want to leave out the rosemary, you can. • 1/4 cup honey • 1/4 cup water • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves • 1 cup fresh grapefruit juice • 2 tablespoons Campari • 1 cup Prosecco • Garnish: fresh rosemary sprigs

In a small saucepan, bring honey, 1/4 cup water, and rosemary leaves to a boil over medium heat. Remove from heat; cover and let steep for 20 minutes. Strain and discard rosemary. Let cool completely.

In 4 champagne flutes, combine 1/4 cup grapefruit juice, 2 tablespoons rosemary-honey simple syrup, and 1/2 tablespoon Campari. Top each with 1/4 cup Prosecco. Garnish with rosemary sprigs if that’s your jam.

There is always time for a cocktail, especially for moms or Mr. Moms. On their day, give them a cocktail and some space so they can actually relax. I want to shout out to my mom, who put up with a lot in my childhood. I also want to shout out to my wife, who continues to be a fantastic mother day in and day out. Cheers!
