Dried leaves can be weaved into baskets, mats, for chairs, thatching and so much more. The vetiver grass also provides an important resource to generate community-based income earning opportunities. Youth and women, in particular, are being trained as crafters, to create a range of products from vetiver and to improve their skills to manage and grow small businesses, using leaves and roots harvested as part of hedgerow maintenance. The green livelihoods aspect of the EbA fits well within the artisanal and handicraft traditions.

Vetiver plant leaves are aromatic! People use the dried leaves to make things like baskets and mats.

Kalinago Community, Dominica

Vetiver has a long history of use in Dominica, and was once upon a time well recognized and commonly implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries (MOAFF). Past education and outreach initiatives in the 1980’s also led to the adoption of The Vetiver System (VS) especially in the Kalinago territory, where in several locations vetiver grass hedgerows can still be observed on contour properly installed some 30 to 40 years later, and its occasional use for roadside stabilization as well.
