Editors Note Just Ask! It has been an almost 8 year journey to having you flip through the pages of one of the things I am passionate about -wedding planning. Like most people, starting my own business seemed a daunting task. I would poke my head into it every once in a while when a friend was getting married but that was about it. Overtime my desire to start my own business and write my own story welled up within me. Somewhere along the way, my life mantra became ‘just do it!’ It doesn’t matter if you start and stop, start and fail… actually; there are no failures only quitters! All that matters is that you just do it! And so I did it! And here we are. Now that I have one important skill under my belt I am applying myself to a new one this year ‘Just Ask’ inspired by a mightily talented photographer Thandiwe Muriu with skill beyond her years. When I inquired of her how she had amassed such skill, she said so very simply, ‘I just asked’ and she went on to explain how she had learnt from other experienced photographers by….just asking. And with that enjoy the first of many issues of Everything Wedding Magazine. A special thank you to every individual I just asked!
Celebrating Passion! Christine

Meet the Dj J
ackson Kamau, better known as DJ Soxxy, is a well-known DJ in the Kenyan music industry. He has won many accolades including DJ of the year award in the 2009 Groove Awards. We got some one on one advice from DJ Soxxy regarding wedding music, deejaying and family.

1. How did you start deejaying? I have always been a lover of music and the art of deejaying used to intrigue me. I used to use 2 CD players (Discmans) and a small mixer to play music in schools as we went for Christian Union missions under the Youth for Christ Organization. 2. Who is your mentor in the deejaying industry? DJ Moz is my mentor and is the one who gave me the first platform as a DJ. He is a man that I truly respect and honor. 3. What music did you play for your Indian-themed wedding? Believe it or not there is Christian Indian music. Our wedding planner Sameera managed to get for us some great music which we fused with other gospel tunes. 4. How do you manage to balance your time with your family and deejaying?
For me, family comes first and so I work hard not to focus too much time on work and forget why I’m working. When I’m working, I’m working but when I’m home it is family time. 5. Why is it necessary to get quality sound and professional deejaying at your wedding? Is it a necessary cost? The thing about weddings is that you will never repeat it hence everything needs to be A1. Entertainment makes or breaks a wedding reception so you need your guests and you to enjoy every moment of it. It’s so bad if you have faulty sound that breaks when speeches are being made or if your guests can’t hear what is going on hence they start talking amongst themselves.

“ The target audience is the
main difference between weddings and other events. I play music that will identify to the target audience.
6. You are a renowned deejay in Kenya. What is the difference of deejaying in a wedding and deejaying in other events? A good wedding DJ is one that realizes that the crowd they are playing for primarily is of more mature folk. The DJ needs to balance that and the rest of the audience. For a wedding the reception is primarily for the parents and older family; your core audience is the older people so the music has to be tuned to 60% music that will entertain them. The target audience is the main difference between weddings and other events. I play music that will identify to the target audience. 7. Considering that music is a very important ingredient in weddings, what would be your advice to couples in terms of choosing wedding music? I usually advice the couple that for the reception the music you play is for entertaining the grandma, uncles, aunties, dad, and mom hence the music selection needs to reflect that. 8. Do you have a site where couples can find you and get more information of the services that you offer? Face book: Deejay Soxxy Twitter: @DJsoxxy Website: www.DJsoxxy.com

“.....a lifetime gift that she will forever have”
W
hat better way to start one’s wedding day than to surprise one another with a gift. Albert chose to get Jacque, as he put it, “… a lifetime gift that she will forever have. It clearly symbolized my strong love for her with a real lion footprint embedded on it. Inscribed was our wedding date and the words Albert loves Jacque.” Jacque on the other hand wrote Albert a heartfelt letter.

acque,a student in Albert’s Computer class back in 2005 had no idea that 10 years later they would star in a fairytale wedding beside their two children Sasha, 8, and Ria, 6 years old. A broken down computer and tutor turned knight in shining armor led to their lifetime fix. Jacque donned a stunning white princess wedding gown paired with the perfect accessories and well-done nude makeup to complete her elegant look. The bridesmaids looked pretty in turquoise blue dresses with a touch of ankara. The bouquets were a perfect combination of turquoise and yellow for a refreshing pop of colour

wedding should reflect a couple’s combined persona. Jacque wanted her wedding to be elegantly simple. An all white ceremony setting and gold chiavari seats did the trick. Albert personally worked on the cake design and wanted a grand entrance for his bride. A fleet of vintage cars for the bridal party was his first option but offbudget. We therefore considered the Mini’s, an all time favorite car for Albert to stick within budget. It was the best decision we made. The bridal party had tones of fun taking pictures with the Mini’s.

or Albert his favorite part of the wedding was watching his bride walk down the aisle. “The thought that there goes my future wife was breathtaking and almost got me to shed a tear. No one noticed,” Albert shared with us. The couple also got to have their children as part of the wedding and created many family mementos such as dancing together which was Jacques favorite part of the wedding. For Sasha their daughter, her favorite part of the wedding was walking down the aisle holding up a ‘Here comes the bride’ sign. For Ria, their son, he told us his favorite part was, ‘When Mummy and Daddy were kissing at Windsor’. However, as most weddings not everything went as planned. Albert’s wedding shirt went missing a few days before the wedding and they had to make a shirt out of the remaining fabric. Jacque advises, “Things will definitely not go as you would have wanted to, but it’s very important to be calm and enjoy every aspect of the wedding, including the planning.” Jacque and Albert planned the wedding from Ghanaand were happy with their wedding planner Everything Wedding

acque and Albert got away from all the wedding cheer at the reception to capture lifetime memories at this intimate Sunset Shoot. What the two loved about each other:“Albert is one person who can make humour out of any situation, he makes me laugh even at my lowest point, “ were Jacques sentiments while Albert’s were, “I mean, how brief can I be........Everything. She is God sent and a true mentor to me.” The couples surprise honeymoon destination was Mauritius which Albert coins as “the epitome of the wedding”. After the wedding ceremony it is evident the wedding had just begun.

Meet the MC Peter Gitau
K
enyans have begun to see the increasing rise to have a professional MC for their weddings. We talked to Peter Gitau, a member of Kayamba Africa, now an MC for weddings n corporate shows. When did you discover you can MC? I discovered I could MC by default when I went for a certain wedding that Kayamba was singing in and the MC did not show up. At that time I was the leader for Kayamba Africa so the couple asked me to MC. They were so happy with how I conducted the wedding that they paid me the full amount of what they were to pay the MC. That’s how my venture into MC-ing begun.
What is the difference in MC-ing at weddings and corporate events? At weddings you have to read the moods of the people so as to know whether to be serious or not. I do mature jokes that all people can grasp. In corporate events they don’t need comedy but need to be guided through the program. It is a Kenyan tradition that in weddings, the couple often chooses a family member or a friend to MC. Is it necessary to have an MC at a wedding and why? It is necessary to have a professional MC at your wedding. I have seen this through experience of different weddings as an MC and a performer. If you choose a relative to MC he/she may become biased and give their side more time to speak than the others leading in time wastage. After people eat they want to dance and listen to jokes. Most people including the bride and groom do not really hear what is being said in speeches.
Meet the MC
“It is necessary to have a professional MC at your wedding. I have seen this through experience of different weddings as an MC and a performer.”
What is the biggest challenge with being an MC of a wedding? The biggest challenge is timekeeping which comes from the bride and the groom, especially after the photo session. If time is not met it forces the MC to maybe cut short the speeches. Entertainment is also cut short and we have to talk to the cake matron to use maybe 10 minutes. What advice would you give a couple that is looking for an MC? A couple should be very cautious. They should go to several weddings to listen to MC’s and they should also make sure the person they choose can handle a wedding without bias especially if it is a wedding with mixed tribes. What advice would you give to someone who wants to venture into MC-ing? First of all go through the industry and see the people who are there and how they do their job. MCs also have to be very disciplined and able to handle people. It is important for them to know who to tell certain jokes depending on ages.

M
ost of us have experienced weddings with major hitches; the kinds that make you wonder if the couple even bothered to plan it. However, this is the absolute opposite. According to Zubeda Athman Ali her wedding to Mwinyi Gomango went according to plan,” I am a perfectionist. I usually have Plan B,C,D…” she disclosed.

wahili weddings have a number of events that all culminate to the ultimate time of being married. One of the events is the henna party or ‘kitchen party’.

he main event of the wedding is the nikah. During the nikah only men are allowed into the mosque where the groom takes his vows; as is customary the vows are taken separately. Mwinyi is clad in a joho which is usually worn traditionally by Saudi Kings. After this, Mwinyi’s side of the family hosts Zubeda’s family for the first reception. Ideally the bride is expected to wear green as it is believed to be the color in heaven. Zubeda settles for a white dress with green threading.

he second wedding reception is hosted by Zubeda’s family and is her favorite part of the wedding. She is clad in white and the groom in a suit. As with all weddings, this is a time for family and friends to meet and celebrate. For Mwinyi and Zubeda it was special to have their daughter in the wedding. “While I was at the front in one of the ceremonies-she came to whisper to me ‘Mama, kuku imeisha’. She thought
we are at home and that I should go add the chicken in the serving bowls,” Zubeda recalls. As all Swahili weddings, the finances are catered for by the parents. During the reception the community compensates the parents. This is done by creatively pinning money on the parents. Zubeda’s love for Mwinyi is driven by his kindness whereas Mwinyi’s love for Zubeda is driven by her drive.

T
he Cinderella wedding dress is a figure flattering style for most body shapes. Here are some tips and quips‌ If you are short and petite, full skirt princess wedding dresses can be overwhelming for your body frame. They tend to make one appear shorter, because they are so wide. You would need to have a good pair of heels on to pulLthis ball gown wedding dress style off successfully. Small busted brides have a hard time keeping a strapless neckline in this style from sliding down, because of the weight in the skirt. A strap detail like the bow-tie would come in handy. A tall bride can wear this style quite nicely. Because of the wide full skirt, it can make her appear shorter in height which may be something she may not mind. A Cinderella dress will definitely bring the magic of the wedding to life.

As a modification of the Cinderella dress, they suit most body types and are fantastic figure fixers. She Said Yes
Theirs was a ‘friendshipfollowed-up-with-love’ kind of relationship.
The Book-Club Proposal
E
very girl wants a fairy tale kind of proposal. Some of us tend to become a little unrealistic. We hope and pray for prince charming to ride in on a white horse and confess his undying love for us in front of the whole kingdom, before dramatically getting down on one knee and popping the big question. Some of us do get something small that can be likened to this while others are not as lucky. Gathoni Njungi is one of those few girls who are lucky enough to have received a fairy tale proposal.
Gathoni Njungi, a beautiful, bubbly lady and Jacob Gichuhi, a dark, handsome man with a cool, calm and collected aura have no ordinary engagement story. Theirs was a ‘friendship-followed-upwith-love’ kind of relationship. Having met in 2009, it wasn’t until 2012 when “something changed” as Jacob put it. This is when the coffee dates, lunches and dinners begun. Like every couple Gathoni and Jacob have their differences. They have learnt to talk through their issues and learnt their weaknesses. The two have also read Christian books such as The Sacred Search and Sacred Influence; both by Gary Thomas, on relationships that have helped them realize how relationships should be.
She Said Yes “What has helped us out is that we are friends. The years of friendship has really worked out for us because we are open with each other… God is big in our relationship,” was Jacob’s response on how they solve most of their differences. Gathoni knew that Jacob was the one for her and even told him that he would be her husband before they started dating. Jacob is a man of surprises and had planned that the engagement be just that… a surprise. The grand day came while they were at the coast for holiday with their friends from the book club. “It started in June she figured it out in October,” Jacob said when we asked him on the engagement itself. Jacob got his older sister, Eve, to get Gathoni’s ring-size which she was able to do easily. He then got his older brother to ship in the ring. While they were at the coast, the group planned for an all dressed up dinner. Gathoni chose the restaurant she preferred for the book-club dinner, oblivious to Jacob’s plan. Jacob then made the required plans with the restaurant and waiters to ensure that his plan went well. “I was nervous. I’m not too sure why because I knew she’d say yes,” he revealed
“I was screaming all through… And I said a lot of yeses,” to us. Jacob even broke his phone in the frenzy of ensuring that everything would go according to his plan. His friends being unaware of his plans asked him what the problem was due to his anxiety.
61
During dinner John Legend’s, All of me begun to play and Jacob asked Gathoni to dance and handed his friend a camera to capture the moment.“We were dancing then he just paused and … there was a speech,” Gathoni said clearly still shocked by his proposal. “Rose Gathoni Njungi, I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to grow old with you. I want you to be the mother of my children,” was Jacob’s romantic proposal. “I was screaming all through… And I said a lot of yeses,” Gathoni interjected. Jacob preferred a public engagement because he is an open person and besides “she’s attractive, she’s beautiful. Why not show her off?’ It took a while for Gathoni to believe that she was engaged but she felt special after the special engagement. Jacob’s advice to guys planning to propose was simple, “It’s one of the best things to do… You only get to do it once. Give it your own flavor, your own taste… as long as she sees you’ve put thought into it, she will appreciate it. Enjoy the moment there is always someone who’ll do it bigger and better. Make her feel special.
