-In a near future, in 2036, the center of Athens has been deserted. A collective group of scientists have occupied the abandoned Building Block 10. They use 3d printing machines in order to reform the buildings. The reproductive properties of the 3d printers allow them to regenerate themselves and sprawl to the whole building block. A 3d-printing factory is created at the core of Building Block 10. It is a growing and vital system which is activated and continuously supplied by the 3d printing process. In this factory there is neither an assembly line, nor stock of products. The production process corresponds directly to the purchasing decision. In other words, a constant interaction between production and consumption is achieved through customization. This interaction is based on a web system. At the production halls, the machines generate the production. They print objects from scratch. The processing and the assemblage of individual parts are replaced by a holistic production that doesn’t have distinctive construction stages. The Information Tower operates as a collector and manager of the online information and orders that are entering the system. The Information Tower is the communication link between the factory production and the consumption desires. Orders are retransmitted from Information Tower to the Factory Tower- the brain of production process. There, workers are designing the customers’ orders. The production that is sprawling throughout the building block is controlled from there. Any error inside the system is automatically detected and fixed. The Tower functions as a potential panopticon of network production. The whole system is reinforced not only by the hypertopical market that it creates by itself, but also by the commercial activities that take place at the ground floors of its buildings. The autonomous community is completed with the installation of 3d printed residential units that are designed in the form of the minimum human habitation. Building Block 10 has become a machine itself. Its community produces and at the same time reproduces and determines itself.-

CHAPTER 1 The Staircase- An endless performance At the core of the building block, the uncovered space of the ground floor has been expanded. Tall buildings that stand around, have revealed their insides. Their sides are no longer compact. Glass dresses them. It exposes their insides and the remains of their original form. Through their transparent shell, you can see the machines working ceaselessly. In the center of the uncovered space, stands the staircase. Its shape is irregular. The staircase, looks like a balcony of theatre on the big stage of the building block. The production process becomes a spectacle. The relics of the buildings constitute the scenery for a new era.

CHAPTER 2 The Factory- Generating Materiality At the production halls, the machines generate the production. They print complete objects from scratch. The treatment and the assemblage of individual parts are replaced by a holistic production that doesn’t have distinctive construction stages. Zion8 alerts the beginning of a new print job. The pink-robe clad worker will set in motion the immobile conveyor belt. In this factory the conveyor belt is just a remnant of its traditional usage. The unstoppable flow of parts waiting to be assembled has been replaced by a slow and fragmented motion. Nowadays, the conveyor belt transfers complete products.Everything here functions as a skewed memory of the traditional factory.

CHAPTER 3 The Factory Tower- A brain’s anatomy Printing from 7axisMR35 has unpredictably stopped. From the Factory Tower, worker goes down with the glass elevator in order to control the damage. Among the cut slabs of the five storey building, stands the tower. Factory tower is the brain of the production. There, workers are designing the customers’ orders. The production that is sprawling throughout the building block is controlled from here. The Tower functions as a potential panopticon of network production.

CHAPTER 4 The Information Tower - Print your Utopia The large monitor flickers. An order has just been delivered at the tower. Workers classify the customers’ digital orders and requests. Most products that are produced in Building Block 10 start their route here. The Information Tower is the communication core between the factory production and consumption desires. A worker checks the client’s personal information and the order demands. He files it in the right category. Then it will be sent to a suitable machine to be printed. Small-scale printers are arrayed on small pedestals around the large glass tower. Two women are adjusting one of the machines and are ready to print their object. A worker stationed in a glass canopy oversees them from afar. The printing process is estimated to last about an hour. This is enough time for them to roam around the building block. CHAPTER 5 Agora- Food for Thought They reach the fourth floor. The buzz of talking gets louder. People, either sitting, or standing are having conversations. The space opens. Columns, walls and staircases are brought out, uncovered. The uncovering of the elements of the building lures the visitors to uncover themselves. The tempting smell of food reminds everyone that it is noon. Food printing machines are arrayed around the large cylinders.A man types the code of the food he wants to print and places his plate under the machine. He sits with two strangers at one of the tables arrayed around the cylinders. They will eat and talk. In the naked concrete space, people feel equally by eating.Their common need of food emphasizes their humane existence. This will bring them closer and help them communicate.

CHAPTER 6 The skyline-Visions of Reality

The woman in the white dress stands at the edge of the rooftop. She gazes the city. Around her, white prismatic dwelling units appear among the staircase rooms. The sun shines brightly on their walls. It transforms them to diamonds, standing on top of the naked ruins. “Print Your Utopia�. The poster at the old party wall is half torn. The body of a sitting girl appears from the window of one of the white volumes. It is morning and shadows are falling dark on the naked surfaces of her room. Curled on her elevated mattress, she looks out of the window .The bright light helps her to absolutely concentrate on what see stares upon and on her thoughts too. A mass of buildings is spread in front of her. In vain, she attempts to detect a human presence across the opposite buildings. The image of the Athenian skyline is enough to remind her the social fermentations and interactions that happened in the last 60 years in the city. She lives above the city, on the margin of Athens. She lives in a space of insulation and meditation. The distance from the ground reinforces her pursued isolation. She needs this isolation to create her own utopian world. Slowly the room starts to get filled. Furniture, objects, stairs, all custom made by the machines of Building Block 10 will complete the space. The home that has been printed by its resident stands on top of the city taking the form of a contemporary hut.

EPILOGUE The Athenian skyline has been changed. These new forms of housing start to be visible every passing day on top of the remnants of the roofs. The new ground of Athens stands on the highest trace of its past. Building Block 10 has become a machine itself. Its community produces and at the same time reproduces and determines itself. Building Block 10 represents the city itself. Athens became a machine of itself, recreated on its own and flourished on the remains of its ruins.

Cinema Park

Approaching the Charadros stream area we observe that the landscape is deeply scarred by the forces of nature. The stream, the intense topography, the strong winds in the winter, the insufferable heat in the summer which causes river’s desiccation. We use as a referance the rough landscape of desiccated rivers and we geometrize it. As a result a new triangled topography is created that highlights the forces of nature, sculpts the area and forms the buildings (cinema multiplex-moving pictures museum). The whole work is a reference to the forces of nature and the vast changes that they induce to the landscape. Different angles of triangles are used in order to create natural conditions for several functions and spaces, such as the pedestrians’ routes, slopes for walking, seats. The pedestrian routes are differentiated from the car routes. Pedestrians can stroll around the park along predefined or not paths , whereas the cars move along in the gutter between the two buildings. The intervention reaches its climax in the vast public space on the roof of the two buildings , which also is the start point of all pedestrian routes.

Kunsthalle

Considering the characteristics of this area, which is located on Patras downtown we create a building that incorporates the urban landscape. We reclaim the main unbuilt area of the block (site of intervention), creating a building, which is developed mostly under the land surface. The building is treated like an object, which has touched the carved ground , creating gaps on his perimeter. It develops under the ground, in order to reclaim the topographical differnces that exists in the site. We create a common urban space on the top of the building, which connects not only city with school, but also school with Kunsthalle. Slits on the top of the building in the daylight allow it to be naturally lightened, whereas during the night , interior artificial lighting interacts with city lights.

Exhibition Pavillion

We imagine the site as a three-dimensional solid object, which we transform varyingly according to certain orientation and functional factors .This cube consequently transforms to a spiral-like mass. The key factor is the orientation of our building towards the construction site . Resulting, the northwest side rotates towards this direction. The visitors of the building may come from two different directions on the Esplanade, so the entrance side of our building rotates in such way to serve both routes in the most efficient way. We elevate the main building mass, so as to, firstly, offer the maximum height and width of view towards the construction site to the visitors and secondly, reclaim the ground floor as a public space and meeting point on the same level with the Esplanade. The now elevated main building mass is accommodated with a ramp that starts from the ground floor public space, continues in a spiral way creating the reception, exhibition and secondary spaces on the first floor and ends as the supreme point of the building, having thus created a spiral terrace. This terrace offers the highest observation point of the building (10 m. height) and also serves as an event space.Finally,we “push� the last and highest segment of the ramp towards the construction site,offering maximum field of vision to the visitors as he ascends the building.

Contour bench

Contour bench is a triaxial object, designed parametrically to be fabricated by CNC milling in a 1:1 scale. It consists of three parts, each of which constitutes a seperate object. The bench can host 3 individuals. Originally, it was designed as a solid object. Subsequently, the form was divided in three parts, in order to be easily fabricated, and each of its parts was decomposed into its contours. The bench is constructed by plywood surfaces of 10mm. Each of the contours- plywood surfaces has a distance of 12mm from each other. The plywood surfaces are joined with spacers . Long head screws batten the whole structure.

THE SWIMMING POOL DECONSTRUCTION OF THE AMERICAN POOL| RESEARCH THESIS| FALL 2013

The formation, spreading and deconstruction of a living standard is a complex procedure that demands many years to be executed. One of the most popular “blissful” living standards is the swimming pool. In this dissertation, we chronicle and analyze the conditions under which this living standard was created, highlighted and then, deconstructed. At last we point out the results of this particular procedure. The research starts from the 1900’s affluent American suburbs concentrating on the mansions and estates, and then focuses on the chronicling of the post-war socioeconomic changes, concluding to the current socioeconomic crisis.
