Tips to Improve your Long Range Shooting There are steps you can take to be more accurate when it comes to long-range shooting. Implementing one or two changes at a time will help you to get better and better. As you get into the habit of doing something, it will become second nature to you. Then you can focus on a few more changes to continue to challenge yourself to do better and better. Body Position There are several positions you can consider for your long-range shooting. It is a good idea to try different ones and see how you do. You need to be steady and the gun needs to be stable. If you or the gun is wobbling around, it is going to reduce your accuracy. Often, shooters use a bench to aim with. However, laying down tends to offer the best position. Give it a try if you haven’t! The ground offers additional support and stability. It also reduces the amount of recoil you will experience from the gun. There is a lower center of gravity too, and that reduces unnecessary movements that hinder your ability to take accurate shots. Carry a roll-up pad with you to make being on the ground more comfortable.

A Quality Scope Take your time to select the right scope to use for your gun. Make sure it is designed for long-range shooting. The scope needs to be securely in place with scope mounts. If you need to make adjustments to the scope, do so in small increments until you have it successfully sighted in where you need it. Take as much time as you need to get it successfully calibrated or it isn’t going to do you any good out there trying to take those longer shots. It can be a time-consuming process, but once you have it where you need it, you will see drastic improvements and consistency with your shooting. You need a scope that is completely clear so you don’t have issues with shadows.

Grip While you need a solid grip on the gun, you don’t want to be too tight or too loose. Such errors will affect your overall shot. Make sure your check is firm against the stock. Don’t angle your head though, it should be in a fully upright position. Angling your head is going to adversely affect the view you have through the scope. Breathing It may seem silly, but when you focus on your breathing, you will shoot better. You want to get to the point where it is a good habit you engage in during each shot. Inhale before you fire but don’t exhale until the bullet has come out of the gun. Holding your breath as you fire reduces the risk of small movements that could make your shot off target. Taking your Shot and the Follow Through A common mistake with long-range shooting is a movement when you pull the trigger. Make sure you are remaining still through this part of the process. You may need to focus on it to make sure you aren’t engaging in such an error every time you take a shot. You don’t want any movement after the shot either during the following through. Practice Often Make time to get out there and practice your long-range shooting. The more you do so, the more you will see your accuracy improving.
