Overview of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

Over 80% of GHG emissions come from Carbon Dioxide (CO2).

CARBON DIOXIDE METHANE NITROUS OXIDE FLOURINATED GASES

81% 10% 7% 3%

In 2019, about 43.1 billion tons of CO2 from human activities were emitted into the atmosphere. This was an all time high, breaking the previous record from 2018. The emissions could form a giant “CO2 cube” measuring 30 km on each side. Source: EPA, 2019 Total U.S. Emissions in 2019 = 6,558 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (excludes land sector). Percentages may not add up to 100% due to independent rounding

"We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it." Former US President, Barack Obama

Kyoto Protocol (1997 to 2012) mandated 37 industrialized nations plus EU to cut their GHG emissions.

Paris Climate Agreement (Est. in 2015) set goal to limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

What Are Carbon Credits?

• Carbon credits are measurable, verifiable emission reductions from certified climate action projects. These projects reduce, remove or avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. • Carbon credits bring additional positive benefits: - empower communities - protect ecosystems - restore forests - reduce reliance on fossil fuels. • Projects must adhere to a rigorous set of criteria to pass verification by third-party agencies and a review by a panel of experts at a leading carbon offset standard like Verra or Gold Standard. • After an organization or an individual buys a carbon credit, the credit is permanently retired so it can't be reused.

TM CleanBeta

Strategy

• Trucost is a division of S&P Global and holds the world’s most comprehensive environmental metrics of over 15,000 companies. • Calculations include the Direct and First-Tier Indirect Emissions for each entity in the index. • Direct and First Tier Indirect emissions are broader in scope to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol’s scopes 1 and 2 emissions. • Trucost measures on annual basis and is considered one of the top carbon calculators in the world. • Trucost rely on data from CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project).

Primary Types Of Projects

Projects reduce or remove the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere in at least one of three ways: •

avoids greenhouse gas emissions, for example replacing fossil fuel-derived energy with energy from renewable sources.

removes emissions from the atmosphere, for example, planting more trees, which sequester - or capture - carbon from the atmosphere and store it in solid and drop the liquid.

captures and destroys emissions.

California Carbon Offset Program The California Air Resources Board issues ARB Offset Credits to qualifying projects that reduce or sequester greenhouse gases (GHG) pursuant to six Board-approved Compliance Offset Protocols. Projects must meet the standard of the methodologies outlined in one of the 3 registries below:

• must meet the standard of the 3rd party verifiers; and • must meet the stringency of the California Regulator. These offsets are so robust, they can be surrendered against their compliance obligation in lieu of buying the more expensive allowances.

Example of Carbon Offset Credit: Redwood Forest in Mendocino County, CA

Project ID: CAR1139 registered on 12/08/2016 Project Name: Usal Redwood Forest - IFM Project Type: Improved Forest Management – ARB Compliance

Project Description: • • • • •

49,000 acres of productive redwood/Douglas-fir forest. The redwood forest type is unique to the North Coast of California and is one of the most ecologically rich and economically productive forest types in the world. Roughly 56% of the forest is second and third growth coniferous forest. In 2007, the Forest was acquired by the Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc (RFFI), a non-profit organization dedicated to acquiring, protecting, restoring and managing forestlands for the long-term benefit of the region's citizens. Since acquisition of the Forest, RFFI has sustainably managed it to ensure carbon storage and wildlife habitat.
