Woodland creatures are very prominent again this season, and are cropping up left right and centre, particularly the ever sweet owl. Regarded as a good luck charm, a bringer of wisdom, protection and intelligence, channel a little luck into your outfit with some of the gorgeous pieces available on the highstreet. The woodland trend now expands to charms, earrings, bags and bracelets and even our gentleman out there are wearing them! An animal necklace is truly fashionable: cute enough for daytime, and hip enough for going out. Team it up with a plain tee and some colored hipster skinnies and some great cowboy boots for a fantastic on trend look.

The Peter Pan, the mandarin, the bows, the studs, the furs... the collar has been hanging around (your neck) for a few seasons now and is a firm staple moving into this year, so hang on to those pretty little patterned ones and those sexy sparkled numbers. The best thing, is that you can wear a collar over almost anything this season, from a smart work top to a sport luxe tee a la Nicola Roberts.

Structured styles, boxy bags; ladylike has landed at Dorothy Perkins. Taking inspiration from the catwalks, a monochromatic theme seems to have infiltrated your bags as well as your clothing. From white to cream, mix it in with a little black and it just seems to bring an outfit together, instantly upping the glamour ante. Choose oversized for daytime, fitting in those other most important things that every woman carries, to a small clutch or shoulder bag for night.

Miss Selfridge have a fantastic range of clutch bags this season, from studded to feathered, there’s a choice for all. Team a clutch with a perfectly manicured hand- there’s no room for stubby little nails and chipped varnish where this trend is concerned. Clutches were all over the catwalk and don’t mistake this as a strictly for night time piece, you can rock a clutch throughout the day- mix textures, like leather and fur, or sports jersey and velvet for an interesting aesthetic.

The 90s are having a moment again, twenty years on. Plastic and acrylic pieces in a huge range of rainbow neons are available after the introduction to the trend, and this is one look you can afford to have a little fun with. Remember those brightly coloured rubber bangles? Why not wear five all at once? Topshop have some great interpretations of the trend and it’s easy to revisit your youth once again. Keep your outfit plain and simple to wear the trend in a grown up way.

THE ACCESSORY REPORT-Shoe The dark clouds of winters are finally lifting and the frivolity of spring/summer is upon us. It appears designers world wide have encapsulated this attitude and produced some fine footwear fun. Littered across runways from New York to London, metallic is the way to set your outfit scorching this season. In an ode to the disco era silver foil sandals and gold wrapped pumps were all the rage at J.Mendel, Emporio Armani and Giambattista. Moschino added that ever-elusive bling and created their metallic look heeled sandals decorated with crushed crystals. While Viktor and Rolf provided depth to their metallic theme by using textured materials. This is one of the best trends to recreate, and one of the easiest to dress; metallics add that pop of cool to any outfit whether it is your trusted summer dress or a new spring jumper. Even more exciting is that metallics go with about any make up look – try an icy pink lipstick to set your status as the coolest ice queen. Kurt G

Men’s Style Shoes

Androgony has been the talk of fashion town for the last few months, and this popular trend has transcended into footwear, with many collections during fashion week featuring men’s tailoring in the clothes. With blazers and tailored shirts being a highlight, it seems natural that androgyny be featured from head to toe. The trend of men’s style shoes is often coupled with the monochrome trend as seen in Victoria Beckham and 3.1 Phillip Lim. The structured style of these shoe means that they are perfect for the working world and paired with a fitted pair of ankle grazers you are sure to be coolest kid in the office. Not just limited to brogues, the trend has been transferred onto loafers and ankle boots too – you just can’t get enough.

Finally the shoe gods have been kind this season and blessed us with the chunky heel. Sturdy yet sublimely chic this heel will allow you to strut harder and longer on your stomping ground. Seen on the Chanel runway as heavy structured shoes with a heel height of maximum 4 inches tis the season to be comfortable. Erdem and Etro followed similar suit, but created an edgy look with a blocked colour heel, and Balenciaga added it to the staple ankle boot. This trend is sure to suit all feet and the trick to the trend is to keep the rest of your outfit simple. A girly floral dress with a chunky heel is an absolute winner or a sharp pair of tapered trousers with a heavy shoe means business. Either way (quite literally) jump for joy that the chunky heel has for once trumped the agony-inducing stiletto.

Affectionately known as ‘pointies’ - many believed that pointed shoes had their heyday but they have been revived and have come back bigger and more fabulous than ever. Possibly the sexiest style of shoe the pointed toe is set to make hearts flutter and grant you siren status. Pointed toes were featured heavily across the board during Fashion Week with Versace and Emporio Armani adding extra sex appeal to their shoes with metal-capped toes. Whether they be flat or heeled this trend is sure to spice up any outfit. Pair flat ‘pointies’ with skinny jeans and white t-shirt for effortless glamour or heeled ‘pointies’ with skinny jeans and a blazer for a quick day-to-night outfit.

INTERVIEW

CLAIRE RICHARDS Fresh from her recent stint in Celebrity Big Brother, and now an Ambassador for online catalogue Fashion World I met with the lovely Claire Richards in Central London where she chatted away about everything from her family, future plans and weight issues. by Olga Crosse

ongratulations on lasting in Celebrity Big Brother, how did it feel to be cooped up with a bunch of strangers for 3 weeks? CR- Just a bit bizarre but I am glad I did it. What about Speidi and your letter? CR- That was terrible. She is just stupid, he’s calculating, and knows exactly what he’s doing. I won’t be going out of my way to meet them. And Rylan? CR- He is lovely, very funny and quick witted, he is my best friend and my child. How did the Ambassador for Fashion World come about ? CR- They approached me a year ago because of all the attention my weight and size has gotten over the years. It was the right place at the right time. They allowed me go through everything and choose my favourites out of the range. I’ve also designed a range for their AW13 collection.

20

What’s your favourite item from the collection? CR - I love the little Tea dress with butterflies which comes in Black/White and Yellow/Blue. You’ve made no secret of the fact you’ve had trouble with your weight and have had your fair share of criticism over the years about your size. Does it bother you? CR- Yes it bothers me, but it depends on my mood and hormones. The criticism is getting better. I used to listen to comments and get upset but, maybe, its age but I don’t so much anymore. Everyone else is so obsessed with my size, it has made me less obsessed. I am very happy. There are days when I want to be a size 10 but every woman feels like that. There’s a lot of outside negativity and outside pressure and I don’t need to listen to it. Any advice for our readers with similar issues? CR - There are no written rules. It took me a long time to come to terms with my size. This is the size (16)I have maintained the longest and this is me. Be happy in yourself. Say to the world it doesn’t matter. I would

love to click my fingers and help everyone to be happy. Evolve are co-hosting London Plus Size Fashion week What do you think of it? CR - Its a brilliant thing and I am very excited by it. There are more women like us than anyone on a catwalk in Fashion Week. The catwalk is not reality, not real life, our world is real people. Why not bring it into fashion. Where do you shop? CR - Wherever I can, I search a lot on the internet. I love the way 50’s and 60’s are cut for curvy women. Seams were constructed for boobs, bums and waists, somehow that got lost. I don’t really shop on the High St, I don’t like changing rooms. When I was appearing on CBB, I got so many packages in the door (from Internet shopping) my husband thought I was opening a shop. Do you struggle to get decent, fashionable clothes that fit? CR - I recommend a good bra and one of those things that squash you in knees to armpits where you can wear your own bra with it. They are the best, and I have tried them all believe you me. What do you normally like to wear? CR - Nice stretch jersey wrap-over dresses for the

school run with opaque tights and a nice fitted dress to go out that clings in all the right places. What’s your best feature? CR - My boobs which accentuate my waist. I’ve got boobs now! What makes you feel good in terms of life, love, the universe? CR - Knowing I am secure and safe in my family. I have a very stable family life which helps with my confidence. Who’ s your fashion icon? I love the 50’s and 60’s so it would be Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and Jane Russell. What’s next for you? CR - I am cooking on the Alan Titchmarsh show for a few weeks. I’ve always wanted to do a solo album and after 17 years in the business now is the time. Evolve’s motto is Be Proud...Be You. What makes you proud to be you? CR- All sorts, I look at my kids and think I made those two little people and if I have done nothing else with my life I have done something good in that.

Designer Spotlight

Danilo Gabrielli

Finally a Fashion Designer who gets us!

by Olga Crosse

T

he Danilo Gabrielli brand is a high end fashion label based in NYC founded by the Italian designer, of the same name. Born and raised in Porto Santo Stefano, Monte Argentario – a small island off the West coast of Tuscany, Italy, Danilo moved to New York to pursue his career in the Fashion Industry and after many years of designing for high end labels such as Tommy Hilfiger, Simply Vera Wang, and The Gap, he is excited to launch his new line which goes up to a UK 26. How did you start out in fashion given you were in the Italian navy for 3 years? DG I always wanted to be in the fashion industry as a designer, ever since I was a child. After I finished my service in the army, I applied to one of the most prestigious academies for fashion and costume design in Italy. After an intense test and selection of about 500 students (all of them with a strong fashion and artistic background) I was accepted. I couldn’t believe it - it was just like a dream come true. Why fashion design? DG I believe it was because of my family - specifically my mother, her best friend and her sisters. They used to spend the wintertime at home doing crochet or creating

26

patterns and garments for all of the kids. It was mostly to save money but also because their garments would look much better than the pieces you would buy at any boutique. After working for and with such prestigious US fashion houses, it must have been very daunting to go it alone? DG Yes, it was a big risk to take. Working with prestigious American fashion companies and leaving a successful job can be scary, but I always said to myself that I need to express myself and my talent and you can only do this 100% if you are designing your own label. I just felt that the time was right for me to take that risk. Why does your collection go up to a UK 26, given that most high end designers shun this customer? DG Real women have curves and they should embrace them - like your motto says, “Be Proud”. I want to dress all women in world, regardless of

their size. The real beauty comes from inside first and then it reflects on the outside. It doesn’t matter what size you are, if you are a beautiful and happy person inside, then you are outside as well. I design clothes to make all women feel confident about themselves regardless of their figure. What’s the difference in designing for curvier figures, is there more technique and craftsmanship involved? DG The technique is exactly the same. It really depends on what kind of garment you are designing; a lot of work goes into my designs. I try to pay attention when I am designing certain pieces, keeping in mind a full figure and how it would be flattering for that customer and make her feel beautiful when she wears it. Any tips for those of us with curvier figures? DG Oh yes! Please don’t purchase a garment only because it says it is made for a fuller figure. Just because it says that, it does not mean it’s correct for your body. Instead, just go for the one that you can see has been designed and made for your body and figure. Choose the garment that will make you look great and feel beautiful. What inspires you? DG Mostly I would say from Hollywood movies; especially the older films. Sometimes it can also be a song or a ballet, or just walking around the city and looking at the women walking on the street. Who would you love to dress? DG From the past - Maria Callas. Today, I would love to dress Adele and Kate Middleton. All of these women represent beauty, elegance and a strong personality to me. Any style or colour tips for SS13? Black is always a great, dusty rose and ivory are very big for SS13. Where can we get your pieces in the UK? DG All of my designs are available on my website, www.danilogabrielli.com. and on Little Black Dress and Monica & Joe websites in the near future. Evolve’s motto is Be Proud...Be You. What makes you proud to be Danilo? DG I have always lived by that same motto. I am a very real and sincere person and very proud of the person I am. I think this is reflected in my creativity and passion for what I do.

International Women’s Day a Woman ‘s Pride by Lottie Longford

W

e juggle babies and boardrooms, have won vital votes and victories, and all while discrimination is, for the most part, as dead as a dodo. We are the women of the New Age UK; our strength encouraged by friends, scholars, family and lovers. Climb a mountain? She’s at the summit! Become the breadwinner? Count on it! Accept a compliment? Well.... Such a minuscule detail in the grand scheme of achievements, however the British woman is renowned for brushing off any statement of accolade. We are too fat, thin, old or inexperienced. Tabloids dribble gluttonous criticisms of the ‘fairer’ sex. As an annual antidote to soothe and inspire, we welcome International Women’s Day with open arms. International Women’s Day has been celebrated every March 8th since the early 1900s, when it arguably started life as a political event in the Soviet Union before being developed

28

by the UN as marked occasion to recognise our worldwide struggles. This and every year thousands of Russian men spend International Women’s Day lavishing not only flowers but also compliments on the women in their lives; daughters, mothers and wives. The original focus of the Day was to mark the solidarity of equal economical and political rights. It seems madness now that there was no place in parliament, polls or even the professional workplace for us in relatively recent history, but our ‘fore-mothers’ literally dragged themselves under horses so to drag us into the modern world. Wealthy women joined forces with lower classes to form a united front in both militant and peaceful ways to fight for what we take for granted every 8th March since. There is still much needed improvement for the female role in societies worldwide, from women as bishops here, to the education of women afar - our work is not yet done. Each Women’s Day has varying themes to which it aims to find resolution; 2013’s being ‘A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women’. There exists always the argument against feminism that condemns the belief of female superiority. Those feminists! Spending time burning bras, condemning waxing salons and generally being VERY, VERY ANGRY. Anger is passion that fuels debate and change. A feminist is no man-hater; a feminist is anyone - man, woman or alien - that believes in the basic principle of equality and is hell-bent on changing the female role in society until it need change no more. The integral strength of the woman is simply phenomenal we fight and win battles every day, and we must recognise these achievements. Next time you are in a booth, high five your electoral neighbour! Good work for sorting that mess out. Pay a compliment to your ‘sister’ and, more importantly, accept one. Lavish the accolade you rightfully deserve and return the good deeds of feminists past by contributing to the lives of girls still waiting. International Women’s Day is 24 hours. Imagine if this positivity spanned the year for all worldwide. As the great Gloria Steinem explains, “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights”. www.internationalwomensday.com

CurvyNFit

by Olga Crosse

O

n a scorching hot day last August when the world was heading east for the Olympics, I find myself going West in the other direction to the Sunbeam Studios in Ladbroke Grove, West London to London’s very first CurvyNFit event. The brainchild of Evolve’s Editor Rianne Ward. Lured by the strapline ‘It’s a Curvy Celebration. Come along and embrace those curves and show them some fit love’ how could I resist? I was in excellent company, also supporting the event were TV & Film Actress Tameka Empson, Olympian Tasha Danvers, FitLife Celebrity Personal Trainer Bella-Marie and Nutritionist Jane Plan. CurvyNFit is a movement - a way of life, whose aim is to get us all to look great and embrace our BEAUTIFUL curves. CurvyNFit’s ethos is simple ‘It’s possible to be curvy and fit’ and its motto even simpler which is to ‘strive to be the healthiest you can be’. I’m sure most of you agree, going to a gym or a class or starting to exercise for the first time or getting back into it after a break can be particularly daunting

30

especially for those of us who are curvy. Personally I find gyms and classes such as yoga and Zumba intimidating, they put me off exercising, everyone seems to know what they are doing, are fitter, with not a drop of sweat in sight and there is me labouring away breathless and pouring with sweat. So to come to an event where no-one cares what I look like, where no one has a clue what they are doing and like me break into a sweat at the mere sight of an exercise ball its a fantastic supportive, non threatening way to start on the road to exercise and leading a healthy life all supported by the patient and knowledgeable instructors guiding and encouraging you every step of the way.

31

Nearing the venue in Ladbroke Grove, I could be forgiven for thinking I was at a photo-shoot for the next edition of Men’s Health instead of Curvy fitness event. I knew though I was at the right place because it was teeming with people all looking the part. I personally broke into a sweat and it had little to do with the exercise when I caught sight of the personal trainers getting ready to put us through our paces and were there to offer us the whole package of personal training, nutritional advice with a healthy dose of realism and motivation. The schedule for the day was packed full of activities and workshops from 12.15 p.m. to 5.30 pm. Proceedings kick started with a workshop on leading a Fit Life by Bella Marie. This was then followed by an energetic Zumba session by Ann. I was instantly transported to the Carnival at Rio. I found myself shaking my hips and goodness knows what else to the Latin beat that is Zumba. To fantastically lively Salsa and Rumba music Ann had us wiggling and shaking and shouting our way to exhaustion with a healthy dose of laughter in between. Wow did I feel energised and raring to go after that. For those amongst us that needed cooling down and a bit of a chill, from all that Zumba, then African yoga by Pablo Imani was just the thing to melt away the stresses and strains of city life. To the mellow sounds of Africa, it felt like I was floating on an oasis of calm right in the heart of the Serengeti plains. Stretched to the limit, I discovered muscles I never knew existed and I had the best sleep that night than I had in years.

32

Next stop the Middle East (except it was Ladbroke Grove), and a spot of belly dancing, to the musical strains reminiscent of Arabian Nights, Bianca got me curling and wobbling my belly, boobs and bum for all I was worth and before you could shout falafel I was winding and gyrating my hips and arms seductively around the room like Sheradazee belly dancing my way to fitness. I mightn’t have looked particularly sexy but I surely felt it. This one is great for strengthening those hidden stomach muscles. Taking a break from all that exercise there were plenty of Health & Nutrition workshops taking place offering valuable insights and tips on how to eat in a healthy way as well as fitness consultations and Q& A’s with Bella Marie. For those of us who needed a break after all that activity we could browse the many stands and whet our appetites at the delicious food stalls that were dotted around the venue. ONE TO WATCH MODEL JADA SEZER by Sarah Potter

T

wenty three year old stunner Jada Sezer is on the rise. Nine months ago, Jada was working as a mentor for children with behavioral difficulties in a primary school and after working hard as a plus size model part time on the side, is now lucky enough to be able to do it full time. Having been chosen as the face of British Plus Size Fashion Weekend, as well as front cover for Evolve, we caught up with Jada pre-BPSFW to find out what makes this plus size model tick. Hi Jada, first of all, what do you enjoy most about plus size modelling and why? Modeling involves lots of travelling, a varied work schedule and a total

ambiguity of the future. Some people would probably hate the inconsistency but I love it. It keeps me stimulated and I’m so grateful to be doing what I enjoy. Have you ever encountered any negativity within the fashion industry? What happened? When starting out, I stepped into the industry blind, without any guidance. I didn’t know much and was easily persuaded into spending unnecessary money. I met some extremely dodgy photographers and put myself into some uncomfortable situations which if I hadn’t had been as strong willed as I am, could have been quite dangerous. By researching my graft and being signed with a reputable agency I

do not encounter these negatives, but I’m sure as I progress with my career many alternatives will arise. Good comes with the bad, like yin and yang, but more importantly it’s how you respond in those situations. Have you always been comfortable with your body? Growing up I wasn’t as confident as I am today, reason being purely self-acceptance. Being different to the majority isn’t bad, but it’s how you carry it. I cater to my shape, style myself differently to best friends who are 5”3” and size 8. I don’t try to fit in. I don’t know when, but one day I realized, you can lie to the world or you can lie to yourself but you can’t do both at the same time. That was a wake up call for me. What’s been your favorite job to date and why? That’s a tough one; they keep getting better any better; probably a roof shoot overlooking the London skyline. As the sunset, the view was phenomenal; I was in utter awe with my city. Where do you get your clothes? What’s your favorite shop or designer? I shop everywhere, from high street to bespoke, from online to markets. I like my look to be a mash up of high and low end stuff. It’s hard to always find items that fit, especially vintage garments but that’s the fun. Finding a hidden treasure or customizing the item myself!

What outfit do you turn to that makes you feel incredible? At the moment I grab any chance to show a bit of midriff! Crop tops and high waist jeans, leggings, and skirts. The options are endless and it’s so sexy yet your arms and legs are still covered. You can slip on your shape wear to give that extra support and show the ultimate curve. What’s your favorite trend this season? Practically all mentioned above AND Givenchy’s fierce graphic print tees. You were the face of British Plus Size Fashion Weekend how did that come about and what did it mean to you? Co-founder Remi Ray gave me the opportunity. We had been in contact during the beginning of both our careers and 12 months down the line she approached me about the event and the rest was history. I am truly honored and thankful to have been given the opportunity in representing BPSFW, I hope my image can shine a new light onto plus size models as a sector, concept and prejudgment. We’d just like to take a moment to thank Jada, she was absolutely incredible at BPSFW and received much well-deserved recognition.

Friday 15th

By Rianne Ward riday 15th February 2013 and BPSFW has finally begun, with months of hard work behind us we are excited and nervous all at the same time. Held at Beach Blanket Babylon in Shoreditch the clock strikes 2pm and the press, bloggers, competition winners and special invited guests all start to enter. What a great turn out, into what turns out to be a very hot room but nonetheless people are still enjoying networking whilst drinking wine and nibbling on cupcakes donated by www.sugarcakesco.co.uk. working their way around the many designers stalls and looking at some of their collections. In front of a full room with many videos and photographers in place the host for the press event the beautiful Jessica Kane of Skorch Magazine www.skorchmagazine.com opens up the event and introduces MP Jo Swinson, who we are so happy to have at the event. After her inspiring speech and some amazing hip shaking vocals from the diva that is Vula Malinga (checkout her forthcoming interview in our next issue) we give everyone a sneak peek into some of the designs we will be showing at the main even,t by having a small fashion show and the girls looked great! After a few hours networking and having fun, many interviews and photographs, with goodie bags in tow many people say goodbye and are excited to see everyone on Saturday. A successful press day over and but there is no time to rest we need to get ready for BPSFW Saturday.....

THE RE-IN OF THE FASHIO ra to era, year to year, there are always those women who define a fashion movement. The Monroes, The Twiggies, The Campbells, The Mosses. These women are highly influential in their industries, role models of their generation and with the ability to inspire. The rise of the plus size industry brings about some new inspirational women; beautiful, confident and passionate about what they do. The bloggers, the designers, the motivators. We talk to three of the key women in the plus size industry at the moment; Jessica Kane, Remi Ray and Rianne Ward. They are the ones to watch, and this is the Reinvention of the Influence.

NVENTION ON INFLUENCE

THE RE- INVENTION OF THE FASHION INFLUENCE

JESSICA KANE by BILLIE BHATIA

W

hen asked what she was most looking forward to at British Plus Size Fashion Weekend, busting with excitement, the response was ‘everything’. Finally there was an opportunity in London to celebrate plus size fashion, and she is hopeful that this event will spread like wildfire. In a world where social media has watered down the art of communication, the excitement of a room full of women who are all here to celebrate is the most exciting feeling. Jessica is hopeful for the future of plus size fashion - with an attitude to keep trying and keep doing, hopefully one day integration will take place. Women should be proud of the event, which is running parallel to London Fashion Week, and we are here to not create diversity but create unison.

42

Inevitably the world is filled with a diverse community and we revel in the melting pot that it is - why should this not be subjected to fashion? For this to happen there needs to be a shift in the mindset to a more acceptable attitude; something that Jessica refers to as ‘exposure therapy’. Jessica, an entrepreneur, started her magazine Skorch in 2006 and it has grown into the biggest plus size magazine in the USA. Spurred on by a trip to Torrid (the second largest

plus size retailer in the USA) the idea was born and Skorch was born. Having established how Jessica got into the industry, her ‘five year plan’ is to intergrate. As co-owner and producer of Portland Fashion Week, the third largest fashion week after LA and New York, the integration of plus size and smaller sized is key. Why should there not be a size 22 model with a size 8 model on the catwalk? There is simply no democratic answer - this is just a movement and it needs to happen now. Undoubtedly in any profession you receive negativity and surprisingly Jessica notes that her strongest force of negativity has come from the industry itself. Thus there needs to be an essence of acceptance of creative liberty especially in an entrepreneurial enterprise. When asked if Jessica could go back and say some wise words to her younger self her wise words were, ‘don’t stress too much’. As Jessica is living proof - with hard work and dedication to your dream - everything will work out. Surrounded by fashion, we discussed the latest trends and the recurring theme was peplum every girl’s best friend. ‘Peplum for life’ were the exact words and worn with confidence this is a winning and classic look, time and time again. Looks like Rianne and Jessica, who have declared each other international sisters, have a lot in common! My delightful chat with Jessica ended with her telling me the best advice she had ever been given, ‘grow a backbone’ she tells me and she is right. In this industry you can’t let people take you and your talent for granted because you don’t fit into their idea of perfect. Perfection is an illusion. Real is perfect - and I couldn’t agree more.

THE RE- INVENTION OF THE FASHION INFLUENCE

REMI RAY by SARAH POTTER

R

emi Ray is co-founder of British Plus Size Fashion Weekend having wanted to create an event to empower all women. She strongly believes in letting women represent who they really are, without fear of prejudice and exclusion. The event is meant to give women self confidence, and the ability to express their personalities. She believes that the plus size industry is slowly changing in a positive way. Plus size women now have a voice. They have the ability to progress and move the industry forward together. There is a huge sense of unity and community within the plus size industry, namely plus size bloggers, and designers and brands are taking notice of these fierce, fashionable women, and hopefully this will allow plus sizes’ integration within the fashion industry as a whole.

44

Remi started out working in a store with her aunt., customising her own clothes on the side. Having always had a love for clothing, and Remi began to pursue this dream by studying a fashion degree and founded her blog and online retail platform ‘Trapped in a Skinny World’ in her third year. In her final major project, she decided to concentrate on plus sizes, and hasn’t looked back. She hopes to carry on her vision and create a contemporary plus size collection with a focus on premium quality garments, capitalising on the potential for growth within the plus size industry. So watch this space. Remi’s path hasn’t always been plain sailing, and when asked about whether she had faced any negativity within her journey, she answered with a resounding ‘Definitely’. There has been a lot of change, both personally and within the plus size industry and she hasn’t always been accepted but has grown stronger in the face of adversity. Her advice to her younger self, and to plus size women everywhere would be not to let anybody bring you down. Your size doesn’t define who you are, and it’s ok not to fit the ideal. You shouldn’t look at the size you are wearing and think you are not capable of chasing your dreams. In between dress changes, we talk about the collections being shown at BPSFW, and the outfits we’re going to be wearing to the event. Remi had some gorgeous outfits lined up and we moved onto what we’d be wearing throughout the season. Her fail safe colours for SS are mints, and corals, and she’s really into stripes. She also gives praise to the sexiest skirt on the scene- the pencil skirt, something that Remi would be able to rock with aplomb, no doubt. The best advice this girl has been given is ‘Do the best you can’ and personally, I couldn’t agree more with whoever said that to her. It looks liked Remi took note, and then some, proving that with the right attitude, you can take on the world and everything that comes with it.

THE RE- INVENTION OF THE FASHION INFLUENCE

RIANNE WARD by BETHANY BROWN

R

ianne Ward, co-founder of British Plus Size Fashion Weekend and CEO of this very magazine swapped roles for this photoshoot, sitting in front of the lens rather than behind it. When I asked her about British Plus Size Fashion Weekend, her eyes lit up. I could tell immediately that this was more than just business for Rianne. When I asked her what she was most looking forward to she said that it would have to be seeing everything and everyone come together after so long planning it with Remi and the team. She was excited for everyone in the plus size community, from bloggers to designers, press to buyers, to come together within one venue, particularly those that have travelled internationally! She’s excited to be a part of the plus size community and to see it progress and move forward. She also hopes that eventually we can cut out the ‘them and us’ between plus sizes and smaller sizes and now that plus size women are being put on the map, she has high hopes for this to happen soon. Ideally, Rianne would like to see one fashion week, not just London or Plus and that the shows can show a whole range of different sizes on the catwalks. Originally, Rianne carved a career in the music business as a singer. This is where she faced a little criticism about her weight, with people asking her how she can be so confident on stage as a plus size woman, and she just thought ‘Well, why not?’. She says that people can only get you down if you let them and that a positive attitude will get you through the bad times. This is where she started to think, ‘I’m going to do something else to represent women who may feel just like me, or who faces these questions’. She started thinking about starting a newsletter about plus size fashion to get her

46

voice heard by women in similar situations. She arranged a photoshoot, and once she saw how many beautiful women turned up to audition, and their positivity about the shoot, Evolve was born. She hopes that the recognition that the plus size industry is receiving at the moment will continue and grow. She’d like to see movements from all around the world and think that companies should consider getting high end designers on board to cater for plus sizes. Her advice to a younger Rianne would be to be a little more patience; she remembers she was always rushing around trying to achieve things. A belief in oneself a to have confidence in yourself are two other things she deems important to succeed in this world. Rianne doesn’t like to label herself, and thinks that we should all feel just

as equal as each other. Just because you are bigger or smaller, doesn’t mean you are any more or less healthy, or a better person. ‘I’m me, and that’s how I see it’ she declares proudly. Rianne’s ultimate killer outfit would be anything that involves a peplum. She loves them as she thinks they’re sexy, but hide a multitude of sins; they hide all the bits you’d want to hide, and hug all the bits you don’t! Monochrome is a big hit with her this season too as she can dress it anyway she wants, sleek and sexy or casual and toned down. It’s clear that this CEO is a confident woman, and she divulges the best advice that she’s ever been given as ‘You can’t change your past. You have to learn from it, and move on’. These truly are words to live by, and Rianne seems to be doing just that.

BPSFW - The

Saturday 16

By Rianne War he very 1st British Plus Size Fashion Weekend main event is here...... 13 Designers from the UK, Europe and USA, 5 different elements including a panel discussion with keynote professionals like the beautiful Velvet D Armour, Jessica Kane, Anna Scholz, Anna Shillinglaw and yours truly answering questions from the community and hopefully finding new ways and answers to how we can improve our community. The whole event had a great atmosphere to it, women of every colour and shape looked beautiful and inspired decked out in their fashion finest, whether they took part in the styling masterclass or Anna Shillinglaw’s Model 101 class, swapped clothes at the swap shop hosted by French blogger Gaelle - Vanessa Prudencio or shopped and mingled with fellow curvy beauties at the all day market place, where you could buy the designs that will be displayed on the catwalk, pickup the latest in accessories or have a massage… As 1 of the Co Founders I was extremely excited to see all our hard work and Remi Ray’s original idea come to life. With national and international press in the building we prepared to see our amazing designer’s collections walk down the runway. Step forward 24 models to strut down the catwalk at Shoreditch Town Hall wearing the designers: Anna Scholz, swimsuitsforall,

48

Curvissa, Live Unlimited, Scarlett & Jo, Cult of California, Pauline & Julie, Lucabella, Getz, Syreeta Badu, 113, Carolyn Drapiere and our leading sponsors Simply Be. With over 250 people seated to watch the show, it was great that these designers had the chance to show their collection to a full house of buyers, bloggers but most of all everyday women just like me and you who just love fashion..... Lights go down and the music starts beating around the building, Remi and I take our seats and the show begins it felt like it whizzed by especially as me and Remi’s stomachs were in knots with anxiety. First show over and I am exhausted but proud, was there things I wish I could change YES are there things we can improve on YES but overall I am excited as to what the future holds for BPSFW. BIG THANKS to all the designers, sponsors, photographers, makeup teams, hairstylists, models and especially the whole BPSFW team and Clare Hudson who worked so hard to make this event happen xoxo Let’s continue to Enhance Educate and Empower - BPSFW see you next year

“We loved the weekend, we got to meet so many talented and creative people, and it was really nice to receive such positive feedback on the market. We loved the enthusiasm of the event and the UK’s Press involvement. Fantastic to wake up on Friday morning to see it all over BBC news. Our favourite part was the Friday afternoon at the Press Event; there were many so many bloggers from around the globe and journalists from the UK. Hanging out with other designers was also fantastic as we can be a little removed from it all being based in New Zealand! We thought it was a fantastic idea and long overdue, and we of course instantly wanted to be a part of it, so we could support the industry. We’re launching our online store... this has just happened and we are so excited to be able to speak to our customers directly.”

“I thought it was a great initiative to organize an event like BPSFW, it was fab to see so many bloggers/ customers/press come together from all over the world and we had some great networking opportunities. My favourite part was being able to meet so many inspiring women. I love seeing my collection on the catwalk and loved seeing my designs on such beautiful women. I came to BPSFW to support the network in the plus size community as I think it is very important for plus size collections to be part of the fashion industry, and until we are ready to show at LFW, BPSFW is a great idea. Next up for me? I travelled to NY to sell our autumn winter 13 collection to our US buyers, and did a photoshoot in New York with the fab Denise Bidot and Clementine Desseaux. Then I’m starting on designing spring summer 2014 collections and am very excited about the launch of the Simply Be lingerie range for

“BPSFW was a great idea and we were really pleased to be part of the first one, it was a good opportunity to showcase our new collection and get feedback from potential customers, bloggers and the press. It was great to meet them all, and fellow designers. We thought BPSFW would be a good platform to our target market and were excited to be part of something that could be potentially massive in the coming years. We think there is a massive gap in the market for Plus Size fashion and feel this is over looked by many designers so this was the perfect event for public awareness. Next up for us is the launch of our new collection online and instore at Evans at the end of March and we have just started designing our next 2 ranges, so all very exciting!”

PAULINE ET JULIE

CURVISSA

SCARLETT AND JO

“BPSFW was the occasion to meet people who make fashion plus size all over europe and the world. Bloggers, brands, fashion designers and journalists were gathered in a joyful and friendly atmosphere. We were at BPSFW not only to promote our brand but to meet nice people and to show that fashion could also be plus size fashion. Curvy girls are also fashionistas! We loved the press event, as for us as fashion designers this day was marked by interesting conversations with different women. Each of them had their own approach when it comes to add building blocks with the goal of changing plus size fashion minds. This more intimate day allowed us to explain our way of thinking, our creations, and our brand. Also we do not want to forget the great relationship we had with the models, who are really beautiful girls. It’s very important to show our creations, to speak about our way of thinking and to promote the idea that curvy women are beautiful! Pauline et Julie want to bring a new vision into the French plus size fashion industry. The “choice of beauty” is the result of the influence of the society we live in. To us, Curvy women are also representative of beauty. BPSFW is a showcase dedicated to plus size fashion and plus size women and the idea of BPSFW is great and the choice of date was smart. We hope that the first BPSFW will serve as experience for the upcoming years and that the next event will be even better and that BPSFW will strengthen. In the next few weeks Pauline et Julie are attending different spring events so we can develop our brand. We have open a showroom in Paris. Our goal is to meet people (potential buyers, business partners, etc) who want to see and try our clothes. Our first Spring / Summer Collection 2013 will be on sale on our E-shop (link: www.paulineetjulie.com)”

“As a plus size fashion brand, Curvissa couldn’t wait to take part in the inaugural British Plus Size Fashion Weekend. Being an online retailer, we really relish these types of opportunities as it’s so nice to meet face to face with our customers and blogger contacts, while networking within the plus size community. With so much publicity leading up to the event, it was particularly great to meet designers and visitors from all over Europe and even as far afield as New Zealand!”

“The British Plus Size Fashion Weekend was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and support fashion that caters for women of all shapes and sizes. It was great to see so much media attention about the event and seeing people getting behind it. The fashion show was the highlight as it gave us designers a chance to really showcase our brand with stunning and fearless models. Scarlett & Jo chose to be involved in BPSFW for two reasons. One, to help launch our first collection and get feedback from the consumer and two in order to show our support for the fashion industry as a whole. It would be great to see in the future women of all shapes and sizes walking the catwalk and paving the way for the fashion industry. Scarlett & Jo launched their first collection in Evans on the 5th February with new styles added weekly. Our spring summer range will hit stores and online at www.evans.co.uk in May. We have developed a celebrity following from the likes of Lisa Riley and are hoping to work closely with many of the inspiring plus size bloggers that have supported Scarlett & Jo.”

Beauty News from BPSFW by Clare Cherry

T

his year I have been lucky enough to have been apart of the first British Plus Size Fashion Week and what an amazing show it was. It was my job to create the look for our fabulous models and get them ready for the main event which took place over two days. In which I kept the look Fresh, Bright and Pretty… Really easy to recreate.. see my steps below…

56

How to get The BPSFW Look…

F

irst step is to create the glow Fresh Pretty looking skin, always use a hydrating moisturiser.. even oily skin be dehydrated as it lacks water content, so opt for a moisturizer with a high water content which is suitable for you skin type, whether that be oily or dry. This will allow your skin to have water locked in all day, keeping a fresh looking base. Opt for a foundation with a dewy finish (unless your skin is really excessively oily) and using a foundation brush for a buildable cover buff the foundation right across your face. The Brows.. We want strong, well defined brows, I used pencils to outline and then filled in with powder, it is important for brunettes especially to have a shade which matches the colour of your hair. Blondes can be a little more lenient, it is important for blondes to have some depth with their brow to put colour and shape back into the face, have a play with some soft brown colours and see which works best for you. Myself as a blonde I always prefer to have a slightly darker brow, and whatever you do, even if you have black hair, never put a black colour through the brow, it looks way too harsh. For you black haired beauties opt for a very dark brown.

This look is all about the lips and Cheeks, so its important to keep the eyes soft, yet defined. I brightened the lid with a shimmered cream eye shadow to allow the eyes to pop, then defined the eyes with a dark brown liner top and bottom and smudged the line to give an effortless look. I chose to use powders for this for a softer finish than gels or liquids (for darker skin tones mix and dark brown with a black powder for your liner) Bright cheeks… with a pop, cream blushers are great for this for a sheer finish or a nice bright powder… blend, but try and keep the pop of colour on the apples of the cheeks to give a really pretty look. Highlight the tops of your cheeks bones!! Lips…Big, Bright…Beautiful
