Canada’s Farm Progress Show It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 40th annual Canada’s Farm Progress Show. Our government knows the importance of our farmers and agricultural sector, who have, for the entirety of Canada’s 150 years of existence, formed the foundation of our economy. We are proud to continually support growth, trade, and innovation in the sector and show the world what Canada has to offer. Canada’s Farm Progress Show has played a critical role in our agriculture sector for 40 years, and this year is no different. Over these three days, you will have the opportunity to see the biggest advances and meet the greatest minds in dry land farming and livestock management. Whether you are here to exhibit your wares or take in the sprawling show, I am certain that you will come away from Canada’s Farm Progress Show having built new relationships and gained valuable experience. Thank you to all of those who organized this event. Please accept my warmest welcome and best wishes for a memorable show.

Regina-Wascana Canada's Farm Progress Show - 40th Anniversary Agricultural excellence has always been a renowned Canadian asset throughout our 150 years of Confederation. And Saskatchewan has long been at the centre of the action. Today, the agriculture and agri-food sector accounts for more than 6% of our national economy and one out of every eight Canadian jobs. In the 2017 federal budget, this sector was recognized as one of Canada's six essential drivers of· greater growth, trade and innovation. To support farmers and ranchers, and better meet their growth and export requirements, the Government of Canada is completing a full review of rail transportation services. We're investing more than $10 billion in ports and gateways. Through new trade agreements with the European Union and Ukraine, and recent missions to Asia and Latin America, we're increasing market access around the world for western beef, pork, canola and pulses. To advance world-class innovation, the Government of Canada is putting $70 million into discovery science in agriculture and $30 million into genomics. We have set aside $500 million for broadband networks across rural Canada and $2 billion for rural infrastructure. We're also working with provincial and territorial governments on the next agricultural policy framework to be launched in 2018. Farming has a great story to tell, and nowhere is that story depicted in a more compelling way than right here at Regina's annual Farm Progress Show. For 40 excellent years, this show has been promoting skill, knowledge, innovation, collaboration and growth, welcoming over 40,000 visitors every year from more than 50 countries. es of amazing productivity.

welcome
On behalf of the Government of Canada, greetings to all visitors and exhibitors attending this year’s 40th annual Canada’s Farm Progress Show. And congratulations to all the organizers past and present on four decades of fostering innovation, education, collaboration and growth in the agriculture industry. Today, the show draws visitors from around the world and drives Canada’s economy with over half a billion dollars in sales. This year’s show promises to be bigger and better than ever, with the Farm Credit Canada Innovation Centre and a special focus on women and youth. Looking ahead, the show’s role as an innovation showcase will be more important than ever, with a competitive global marketplace and growing demand for food. Our Government knows that innovation is the key to competitiveness. That’s why we have invested $70 million under Budget 2017 to support agricultural discovery science and innovation. As Canada celebrates a milestone of its own—150 years – the future of agriculture is ripe with opportunity. To help keep Canadian farmers capture that opportunity, I’m working with the provinces and territories to shape the next framework for agriculture that will support a number of key priorities for the sector, including innovation and trade. I wish everyone a great visit to the show and a successful 2017 farming season.
Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, PC, MP, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food
8 CANADA’S FARM PROGRESS SHOW PRESENTED BY VITERRA, June 2017
Greetings from the Government of Saskatchewan Welcome, everyone, to the 2017 Canada's Farm Progress Show. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture is once again proud to support the show, and I hope you see as much value in it as we do. The agriculture and agri-food industry plays many roles in Saskatchewan: it’s a significant contributor to our GDP, it employs 50,000 people, and it provides safe, affordable food for families here and around the world. There also exists the opportunity to expand on those successes through sustainable growth. Canada's Farm Progress Show meets an important need in the growth and success of Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry. In order to be strong and sustainable now and in the future, our industry needs to be open to new and innovative practices and technologies. More importantly, our producers need to have access to those practices and technologies. Canada's Farm Progress Show helps make that happen by bringing together everyone from producers to manufacturers to international buyers. On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, I would like to thank the Canada's Farm Progress Show volunteers, organizers and exhibitors for everything they do to make this show possible. Our industry is stronger because of the excellence you strive for each year. Thank you.

10 CANADA’S FARM PROGRESS SHOW PRESENTED BY VITERRA, June 2017
Welcome – Bienvenue – to the 40th annual Canada’s Farm Progress Show As this year’s Show Chair, I’m proud to once again welcome you to Canada’s Farm Progress Show.
Innovation, education and collaboration are three pillars of Canada’s Farm Progress Show that have inspired everything there is to see and do at this year’s event. Now in its 40th year, the show has seen many changes over the years. However, the core purpose remains the same: Canada’s Farm Progress Show connects qualified buyers and equipment manufacturers in an environment where they can share innovative farming practices to advance the industry. Canada’s Farm Progress Show offers the International Business Centre that welcomes more than 500 delegates from 50+ countries. Through the International Business Centre, buyers, trade delegations and exporter members make formal connections and assess potential business partnerships. In 2016, over $500 M of international sales were generated at the show. It’s inspiring to see Canadian manufacturers showcase home-grown farm machinery and educate the world on North American market trends. I look forward to welcoming our international delegates again this year and hearing more about their experiences at the show. On behalf of the show organizers, volunteers and stakeholders, enjoy your time at the 2017 Canada’s Farm Progress Show. Take in the educational seminars, see the latest and greatest from Canada’s top manufacturers and connect with others in the agriculture industry. Bienvenue!

CANADA’S FARM PROGRESS SHOW PRESENTED BY VITERRA, June 2017 11
welcome Welcome to Evraz Place and Canada’s Farm Progress Show! 2017 marks a milestone in our organization’s history with the 40th edition of Canada’s Farm Progress Show. After all these years, Canada’s Farm Progress Show continues to be the industry’s leading marketplace for dryland farming technology and services. Our team has worked tirelessly to deliver this year’s show with new programs and more opportunities for attendees and exhibitors to connect as we celebrate 40 years of success. Looking back to our first show in 1978, I was curious to see just how much the footprint of the event has changed over the past 40 years. If you look at the Show Guide cover, you’ll see Taylor Field in the background and a downtown landscape that’s barely recognizable. Regina
Welcome to our 40th show! 1978 marked the 75th anniversary of Regina’s incorporation as a city. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip visited the Queen City that year to commemorate the occasion. It was also the first year of what would become Canada’s largest dryland farming show—Canada’s Farm Progress Show. The first show in the ‘70s marked an important development in our province’s agricultural industry. Known previously as the Western Canada Farm Progress Show, the show was renamed in 2012 to acknowledge its status as the country’s premier event for crop technology and innovations. It started with about 70 exhibitors and has grown tenfold over the
Exhibition Park – as it was known in those days – had the newly opened Agridome and several buildings that have since been removed to make way for a modern sports, events and entertainment complex that is literally and figuratively the centre of our community. Over the years, the show itself has adapted in response to industry changes. Look again at the cover photo and you’ll see how the size of the machinery itself has expanded to keep up with larger farming operations and the need to continuously improve production. We’ve been able to accommodate and grow along with the equipment with our ever-expanding and changing property that offers 1.9 million sq. ft. of show space. We’ve earned the rank of Canada’s largest trade show! But despite the changes over the years, the core elements of the show have stayed the same. Canada’s Farm Progress Show is still the only place to see the newest products and innovations, along with manufacturers’ full lines of machinery, all in one location. In addition, educational opportunities have always been central to the show. This year’s speakers will in-
years. Today, staying true to its roots, Canada’s Farm Progress Show is the only show of its kind where attendees can see the latest and greatest in farm innovations and technology, all in one convenient location. To celebrate the 40th show, we’ve added new programs and theme days focused on why our attendees come to the show: education, innovation and collaboration. Wednesday, June 21, is Women in Ag Day and our inaugural Empowering Women Conference featuring Hillberg & Berk founder and CEO Rachel Mielke. Thursday is Young Farmers’ Day, where we’ll celebrate Saskatchewan’s Outstanding Young Farmer Award winners and listen to young entrepreneurs share their stories at the FCC Farm Progress Forum. Our 40th show celebration wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the past to honour the show’s many years of success. Join us for a pancake breakfast, a cake cutting ceremony and the opportunity to see Canada’s funny man Rick Mercer talk about this unique nation we call home. Other exciting features at this year’s show

form and inspire attendees with topics ranging from succession planning to entrepreneurialism. Attendees will also have many opportunities to connect and collaborate with others in the industry through seminars, networking opportunities and entertainment events. As you enter the show grounds this year, take note of the transformation that’s taken place at Evraz Place over the past decade. The iconic new Mosaic Stadium now stands where historic buildings like the Confederation Building and World’s Grain Show Building once thrived. The property’s west side has also transformed with the International Trade Centre—a new 150,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose facility opening later this year that will host future editions of Canada’s Farm Progress Show. Once again, welcome to the 2017 Canada’s Farm Progress Show! Mark Allan President and CEO, Regina Exhibition Association Limited (operator of Evraz Place)
include the Farmyard Inventions Competition, presented by Peavey Mart. We called on the community to submit their most inventive agricultural creations. Competitors were chosen by the selection committee to showcase their inventions during the show for a chance to win a prize valued at $5,000! Be sure to vote for your favourite farmyard invention in the Innovations Showcase. For the second year, the Ag in the Classroom program will be part of our show to connect kids and agriculture. After seeing the program’s success at our show in 2016, we brought it back again to help create an understanding for young people about where their food comes from and also introduce them to the variety of careers in the agriculture industry. Take a moment to plan out your days at Canada’s Farm Progress Show so you can take in all the event has to offer. And again, welcome!

With its corporate office located in Regina and state-of-the-art grain terminals situated throughout the province, Viterra has a well-established presence in Saskatchewan. The company has also made its presence felt through its longtime support of Canada’s Farm Progress Show. Viterra is proud to serve as the title sponsor once again this year. “The event is an ideal forum for connecting with customers and other industry players who all have a stake in our continued success as an industry, one that is becoming increasingly crucial in our global marketplace,” said Kyle Jeworski, president and CEO for Viterra North America. “We share a commitment to innovation and leadership and firmly believe that success in agriculture relies on providing creative tools, solutions and learning opportunities for our customer. This is what makes us a partner of choice in our industry and makes the Farm Progress Show so successful.” Recently, Viterra made another positive impact in Saskatchewan by announcing that it intends to build a new high throughput grain terminal at Wadena. The facility will have a storage capacity of 34,000 metric tonnes and will be able to load up to 156 railcars through a loop track. “We’ve worked closely with farmers in Wadena and surrounding areas for many years, and we’re excited to be renewing our commitment to them through a new, world-class grain facility that will meet their needs in today’s competitive operating environment,” Jeworski said. “By revitalizing our presence there, we will provide customers with convenient access to the superior service, marketing opportunities and advice that make us an industry leader.” Superior customer service is something people have come to expect when dealing with Viterra. Forty years of innovation:
Canada’s Farm Progress Show by Joanne Paulson
Technology and innovation — in farming, as in everything else — have raced ahead over the 40 years since Canada’s Farm Progress Show was founded. Today’s farm is a miracle of modern machinery, equipment and connectivity. From no-till seeders to Internet availability, Western Canadian dryland farming has become high-tech, efficient and far more environmentally friendly. Yet as much as some things change, so do others remain the same. “The trade show industry is changing, and our consumers are coming here already knowing what they’re going to look for,” said Shirley Janeczko, show manager, who has personally seen the event grow and develop for 10 years. “The world is a smaller place, and they can Google anything they want. “But they still want to be hands on. They want to touch it, feel it, crawl underneath it. They did that 40 years ago, and they’re still doing it today. The only difference is they have their cellphones with them and can take pictures of it.” Farm Progress Show organizers surveyed farmers to see why they continue to attend, year after year. The number one reason they identified was the exhibits. “They want to see the equipment, the newest and shiniest equipment,” said Janeczko. “The second reason is the seminars, to learn what’s new in the industry. They always like to have information about that. “The third reason they come is social. It’s always been that way; there’s always been a social component to it.” Founded in 1977 as Western Canada’s Farm Progress Show, the word Western was eliminated in 2012 — likely because it was becoming clear that the show was uniquely huge. Today, it is the largest trade show in the country. Visitors from farming operations that

The show sees attendees from all parts of Saskatchewan, as well as from across Western Canada, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, B.C., the Northwest Territories and the United States. “We have six new arenas we now fill up,” said Janeczko, of the show’s location at Evraz Place in Regina. “It’s just grown tremendously. We have almost two million square feet indoors and outdoors and 650 exhibitors.” The number of exhibitors has soared, in part due to changes in farming practices. In 1961, Saskatchewan was home to five imple-

ment manufacturers; by 1981, there were 30, as Saskatchewan saw great success in manufacturing equipment for dryland farming. “People don’t realize how many equipment manufacturers we have in Saskatchewan — or in Western Canada, for that matter,” said Janeczko. “We have so many manufacturers in our back yard. The show is a place for them to showcase it all.” Another element to the show that has evolved and truly boomed is the International Business Centre. Today, people attend from more than 50 countries, including Brazil, South Africa, Australia and Germany.

Canada’s Farm Progress Show presented by Viterra – the nation’s largest trade show – returns for a 40th year to Regina’s Evraz Place, June 21 to 23. The Farm Progress Show features 1.9 million square feet of dryland farming technology.
“These people are qualified buyers. Many of them are dealers looking for full equipment lines they can take to their parts of the world,” said Janeczko. “We track the sales and in 2016, $500 million was spent over the three days. All of that equipment is exported out of Canada. There isn’t another one like (the centre) in Canada. “I’ve travelled a lot of the world, and I’ve seen, for example, Schulte equipment in Vietnam. ers. They’ll come to buy Seed Hawk, Seed Master, Bourgault, Degelman, Meridian, Brandt Industries equipment.” To celebrate the 40th anniversary, Janeczko has added new programs for visitors to enjoy at the show. Adding to the Innovation Program, she has created the Farmyard Inventions Program, which allows farmers to showcase projects they have undertaken in their own yards. A prize will be offered through a People’s Choice Award system, and the winner will be announced on the final day. The second annual Ag in the Classroom session will also take place, attracting students from Grades 7 through 9, and highlighting jobs within the ag industry. Janeczko is also planning an Empowering Women conference for the first time; 42 per cent of show attendees are female. The show runs June 21 through 23. Wednesday is Women in Ag Day, Thursday is Young Farmers’ Day, and Friday is Heritage Day, honouring the farming past. With entertainment and attractions planned throughout the show, Canada’s Farm Progress Show has something for everyone. “We’ll have our 40th anniversary celebration with birthday cake and a pancake breakfast in the common area in the Brandt Centre at 8 a.m. on June 23,” said Janeczko. “We have lots of fun stuff happening for our 40th year.” For more information on hours, ticket prices and events, please check out myfarmshow.com.
At this year’s Canada’s Farm Progress Show, guests can enter to win a New Holland welder/compressor/generator. This 3-in-1 product combines three crucial tools into one convenient, powerful package, saving you money and space. • The air compressor has a unique belt-guard-mounted aftercooler, automatic tank drain and centrifugal head unloading feature that extends the life of the pump. • The compressor provides 22 cfm of air at 100 psi, which will power larger pneumatic air tools. • The welder provides 250 amps of power at 70-percent duty cycle, giving the operator the ability to do heavy in-field repairs. • The generator offers a peak of 5,500 watts, with two 110-volt outlets and one 220-volt outlet — also enough to power most tools. The machine comes with an industry-standard 30-gallon air tank.
The name of the winner will be drawn at the New Holland booth #5000 atThe Co-operators Centre on Friday, June 23. Entries are limited to one per person.

The rapid growth of Saskatchewan’s implement manufacturing sector in the 1970s led to the establishment of the first Farm Progress Show at Evraz Place in 1978.
Celebrating 40 years of big machinery, big sales and big fun! by Joanne Paulson
It was the spectacular growth of agricultural manufacturing on the Prairies that inspired the launch of a new farm show in 1978. Many Saskatchewan manufacturers have roots reaching back to the 1920s to the 1950s, including Morris Industries Ltd., Schulte Industries, Brandt Industries Ltd., Doepker Industries Ltd., Leon’s Manufacturing and Flexi-Coil (now
CNH). By the 1960s, Degelman Industries Ltd., REM Manufacturing and High-Line Manufacturing Ltd. had joined the industry, followed by Rite Way Manufacturing in the 1970s. Indeed, between 1961 and 1981, the number of implement plants in Saskatchewan grew from five to 30. The manufacturing sector’s growth was noticed by the Regina Exhibition Association. In the

late 1970s, Exhibition volunteers Bill Small and Merle Boesch attended the World Ag Expo in Tulare, Ca. and came back inspired. When they returned, they were joined by volunteers Ivan Thue and John Willmott to launch Western Canada’s Farm Progress Show, with backing from some of the big companies, including John Deere. Four years later, the show attracted 364 exhib-

itors in 18 buildings, on grounds measuring 95 acres. Today, the show boasts 700 exhibitors and 1.9 million square feet on the expansive grounds of Evraz Place. Jim Smalley of 620 CKRM Radio in Regina has covered the show for years, including when the show was renamed Canada’s Farm Progress Show in 2012. Its very size has always made an impression on reporters covering the show. “I remember running around the grounds in a golf cart because there were so many displays to cover. The
show has grown remarkably over the years,” said Smalley. “But even in the early days, it drew a large crowd and quickly became a strong place for farm implement makers to show their latest equipment.” Indeed, right from the beginning, international visitors were intrigued enough to make the long journey to Regina from Hawaii, Kenya, Britain and Australia. Today, more than 500 potential buyers from more than 50 countries come to the show. “The show’s international flavour is amazing,” said Smalley. “I have talked to agriculture leaders from as far away as Mongolia and Kazakhstan. “It is amazing to find that a country on the far side of the planet needs and uses the same kind of farm machinery as those in Saskatchewan. “The show offers the latest in cutting-edge technology. Last year, a buyer from Africa was surprised to find grain bin monitors to help ensure grain does not spoil in the heat.” And producer attendance, from all over northwestern North America, has remained strong. In 1989, the show attracted 31,033 attendees; in 2016, 40,722 came out to see the new machinery and innovations of today. But attendance is not the most important measure of success for the show’s organizers. From a wider financial impact standpoint, the show’s value has risen exponentially. In 2016, the show’s International Business Centre tracked over $500 million in sales directly linked to connections made between buyers and sellers. “It has become an important venue for the growing farm machinery manufacturing base in Saskatchewan to show their products to the world,” said Smalley. It has not been only about big machinery and big sales, however. There’s always a big component of fun, as well: networking in the beer gardens and country music concerts have played a role in bringing people back each year. Some of the big names who have appeared at the show include Tanya Tucker, Willie Nelson and Paul Brandt, as well as the Professional Bull Riding Rodeo. In honour of the Canada’s Farm Progress Show’s 40 years of history, Friday has been designated as Heritage Day. Festive features of the day include 40 per cent off gate admission for
everyone aged 40 and up; a pancake breakfast; cake cutting and celebration; and tours of the new Mosaic Stadium. And, as always, there will be the nod to the early days of equipment with the Antique Tractor and Truck Parade. People enjoy the blast from the past, and Smalley is no exception. “I enjoy the old-time tractor and truck parade,” said Smalley. “It reminds me of my childhood on the farm.” For complete details about the 40th annual Canada’s Farm Progress Show, visit www.myfarmshow.com.

Rick Mercer brings the funny to Canada’s Farm Progress Show by Joanne Paulson
Any Canadian who watches the Mercer Report knows that its hilarious host spends as much airtime in rural Canada as in urban centres, including on farms, in zoos and in the bush. That has meant many moments interacting with animals for Rick Mercer. “It’s funny that you mention animals, because I’m preparing this show, this coast-to-coast Canada 150 show,” said Mercer in an interview, referring to the country’s big anniversary. “Part of the process is I break down all the different segments that I’ve had on the show over the 14 and a half years. “The animals list is so long it just starts and doesn’t stop – basically every animal known to man, or at least to Canadians.” They do not comprise his only farm experience. Mercer has also tackled his share of big machines, and in the context of Canada’s Farm Progress Show, one of them was a combine. “I’ve been on a harvester,” he said. “It was very kind of them to allow me to drive a combine harvester. If you know anything about harvesting wheat, you know there’s not a lot of time. For eight or nine months of the year, you can take all the time you want. But there’s a very tiny window where the wheat needs to be harvested. They don’t want TV boy goofing around. “It took us a bunch of years to pull it off, but we
certainly did.” This year will mark Mercer’s first appearance at Canada’s Farm Progress Show, June 21 to 23 at Regina’s Evraz Place. He comes to speak on the aforementioned Canada 150 theme. “This is something I’ve always done. I used to have a show called Adventures in Canadian Television, and a show called A Nation Worth Ranting About,” he said. “It’s essentially a talk, it’s a speech, but it’s hopefully funny, and I talk about my adventures driving around the country. And because it’s Canada 150, this is more of a state of the union, in some ways, than the others have been, and I talk about what I’ve learned in 15 years of j umping around the country trying to find out what it means to be Canadian. “I’m super happy to be at the Farm Show. That seems like that’s my audience.” While his speech is ‘universal’ for Canadians, “I can’t see talking about the adventures that I’ve had in the country without touching on (something) that’s agricultural or farm-oriented. We’ve covered that a fair bit.” Mercer noted that his show is not focused on big cities. He goes anywhere he can find interesting stories, and often that’s in rural Canada. The mixture of venues seems to confuse TV producers in other countries. “Years ago, we won this big award in Switzer-

land; it’s this monster comedy award. When you win this award, the first thing that happens is you put the format rights up for sale. People start calling from all over the world wanting to recreate your show for their country. “For a shining moment there, we had this agent handling offers from all over the world. People wanted to recreate the Mercer Report. Then when they watched six episodes they all came back and were like, ‘What in God’s name kind of a show is this?’ “In one episode the prime minister is the guest star, and in another episode you’re on a boat with an oyster fisherman, and in another episode you’re with someone called Leslie Feist, who is a musician? “Is this a city show? Why are you on a fishing boat all of a sudden? They just didn’t get that.

Along with hundreds of other very Canadian activities, Rick Mercer has driven a combine. This year, he will talk about his many Canadian adventures at Canada’s Farm Progress Show, June 21 to 23 at Evraz Place in Regina.
Because I guess ultimately, it is just like going out and discovering Canada, and Canada, like a lot of things, doesn’t fit into one little category.” Does that mean his show is uniquely Canadian? “I like to think so. It would have been nice if there was a German version and a Swiss version… but no, none of them seemed to think it would work in their countries. They were like, this makes no sense, you weird Canadians.” Through it all, Mercer works to keep it real, unlike what’s been happening in the United States. Mercer takes no joy in the fake news phenomenon, which has emerged rather in tandem with the election of U.S. President Donald Trump. “I find the whole fake news thing perhaps one of the most upsetting things I’ve ever seen. The fact that the fifth estate – and by the fifth estate I mean media in general – are under such attack and that people of certain ideologies have decided facts don’t matter anymore, that’s something I haven’t witnessed in my entire life. You can’t get away with that in any workplace; it’s amazing to me that now, in politics, you can. “It’s all very upsetting. I’m glad it’s not happening here, at least to the same extent.” Rick Mercer will be take the stage at the Farm Progress Forum, presented by Farm Credit Canada, on Friday, June 23 at 2:15 p.m. Admission is included with your show ticket to Canada’s Farm Progress Show, taking place June 21 to 23 at Evraz Place in Regina. Three Farmers’ success story continues to evolve by Hilary Klassen
The fun of growing a business has not diminished for Natasha and Elysia Vandenhurk, the innovative sisters at the helm of Three Farmers. The company is a fascinating Saskatchewan success story that continues to evolve. “What isn’t fun about the business these days!” said Natasha. “We are growing at a rapid speed, listing with larger retailers and reaching more customers.” After the launch of their massively successful line of camelina oil products in 2011, Three Farmers turned their attention to the healthy snack food market. Although it’s a highly competitive market, the sisters had already gained an understanding of the industry, formed valuable relationships and developed the business. In 2014, they added Roasted Chickpeas and then Pea Pops to their product line. “Everybody’s always intrigued about the camelina oil and we really are the only people that have any sort of market share in Canada with camelina oil. So it’s a big segue into getting the snacks on the shelf as well,”
Natasha said. Her degree in economics from the University of Saskatchewan has informed her success as CEO, while COO Elysia is a SIAST-trained Red Seal Chef whose culinary experience and brushes with celebrity chefs have helped develop the product lines. They source their products from crops grown by Three Farmers: their father, Dan Vandenhurk, Colin Rosengren and Ron Emde of Midale. Pulse crops are also sourced from Saskatchewan brokers. “Our Chickpeas have been a huge success and now our Pea Pops as well,” said Natasha. These ‘nutrient-dense’ pulse crops are not only grown in Saskatchewan, they are roasted and packaged here as well. The products undergo minimal processing and present a healthy low-fat snack option with Omega-3 content. “When we launched our Roasted Chickpea line it really made us figure out who we are, and what our brand offers to our

consumer base,” Natasha said. Part of that branding includes a strong commitment to traceability, which is increasingly important to consumers. “It helps heal that disconnect between urban and rural living and allows a little glimpse into how these products are being made.” Armed with a strong brand and strong sales data, the Vandenhurks set off to slay the Dragons in January. It was their second appearance in the CBC Dragons’ Den and although they knew what to expect and how they wanted to go about their presentation, “there were still those nerves,” Natasha said. Jim Treliving was the only original Dragon on the show. The current younger Den was a bit more welcoming. “At the same time, they

know this is a competitive snacking market and they’ve even seen like products come into the Den before us, so they kind of hammered us on our product and if was it unique
enough to get market share. But as soon as we started talking numbers, we won them over right there. It was a really positive experience overall.” Treliving offered them what they wanted – $400,000 for a 15 per cent stake. But Manjit Minhas, Joe Mimran and Michael Wekerle partnered together to offer a straight-up royalty deal with no equity. The sisters accepted. The deal is still undergoing due diligence so it has not closed yet. Deals made in the Den provide needed cash injections to accelerate growth. “If you’re looking for investors, you’re trying to troubleshoot some huge problems you’re having in the shorter term and fast track your success,” Natasha said. Natasha and Elysia look forward to participating in the Farm Progress Forum presented by Farm Credit Canada at Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina. They will speak on Wednesday, June 21 at 2:15 p.m. “We love sharing our story, some of our hardships, our lessons learned, so other people can grow from them. It’s always really great to get into a room with that many agbased people. We learn a lot from those experiences too.”
Three Farmers products have found a niche at independent food markets and are claiming more territory in mainstream grocery stores. They are in Save-on Foods, Loblaws and Co-op, and are looking to expand into Safeway and Sobeys. The sisters’ efforts were recently recognized at the 2017 Paragon Awards. Natasha and Elysia Vandenhurk were named the “Young Entrepreneurs” of 2017. “We are digging into new ground every day, whether that be signing on with a new customer like Metro Ontario/Quebec, expanding our online presence through Amazon, running Costco roadshows with our camelina oils, and more,” said Natasha. Three Farmers has launched their products into the equine supplements world with their new Canpressco Camelina Oil for Equines. The line has seen tremendous growth which is expected to increase in 2017 as awareness builds for camelina oil in the equine world. The company is launching a new product very early in 2018. It’s another highly nutritious Saskatchewan grown product, but Natasha can’t say what it is. Stay tuned!

Welcome to Women in Ag Day!
Inaugural conference celebrates women in agriculture Women love attending Canada’s Farm Progress Show just as much as the next guy. In fact, 42 per cent of attendees are women; and this year, for the first time, they will be honoured with their own day. by Joanne Paulson
Wednesday, June 21 is Women in Ag Day at Canada’s Farm Progress Show, featuring the inaugural Empowering Women conference. “One of the reasons we wanted to celebrate women in agriculture is because we have a great number who attend our show,” said show manager Shirley Janeczko. “Women are partners in farm operations and they are the decision makers as well. They jointly make decisions on what happens on their farms, within their industry, in their corporations. “By designating June 21 Women in Ag Day, we wanted to support the women who are connected with agriculture, across our industry. We wanted to empower them, to feel that what they’re doing is what needs to be done right now. “As the generations change, we’re going to see more and more women involved in ag, and not just as producers, but in the industry – women running large manufacturing companies, women going up the ranks in agribusiness.” Janeczko has been contemplating the creation of Women in Ag Day for a couple of years, but it came together this year with an added impetus. “It’s because of Canada 150, celebrating the success of Canada,” she said, referring to the nation’s milestone birthday. “And I do believe women in agriculture should be celebrated as well. We might see a little bit of that Canada 150 element coming into play at the show.” The conference portion features four fabulous speakers, and all of them have a great story to tell about how they were able to grow and thrive, said Janeczko. “Rachel Mielke (of jewelry company Hillberg & Berk) is not necessarily ag-related but she definitely is empowering women. She often talks about
finding your sparkle – that every woman has a sparkle within them. That sparkle in agriculture, at the farm show, comes from people being very passionate about their industry. Everybody has that sparkle; sometimes it just takes a little bit of looking.” The compelling group of speakers also includes Dianna Emperingham, former director of product supply at Bayer CropScience; Joan Health of Aidra Farms; and Deb Button, a civic leader and women’s advocate. Following the speakers’ presentations, women attendees will have an opportunity to get together and network. “We also want to help women gain the network they need to grow in the industry,” said Janeczko. “We are hoping to see women come together and create friendships they can foster and nurture throughout the year, and when they return to the event next year as well.” In keeping with the connected focus on women, agriculture and sparkle, CFPS has also arranged for the creation of a signature piece of jewelry from Hillberg & Berg. “Because the show is 40 years old, we’ve chosen a red sparkle ball, which symbolizes 40 years – the success, longevity and strength of the show,” said Janeczko, noting that the ruby is the 40th anniversary gemstone. The red sparkle ball will be set alongside a pearl, as well as the female gender symbol and the H&B signature, “to remind us we are part of a growing community of women empowering women. “It will be for sale at the conference, and the profit will go to Saskatchewan Women in Ag. “They support many initiatives throughout the community – Ag in the Classroom, different community initiatives. It’s a pretty diverse group.
38 CANADA’S FARM PROGRESS SHOW PRESENTED BY VITERRA, June 2017
They also fund a scholarship at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Agriculture each year.” Empowering Women is an afternoon event, starting Wednesday, June 21 at 3 p.m. and winding up at 5 p.m., followed immediately by the networking event. It will take place in the new Mosaic Stadium in the AGT Lounge. Tickets are $25, which includes admission to Canada’s Farm Progress Show itself. “We’re pretty excited to kick this conference off in that new facility,” said Janeczko. “We’ll give women a sneak peek at the new stadium. “I’m very excited about it. I think it’ll be a great event – with lots of room to grow, as well.”
Empowering Women Conference Speakers Rachel Mielke In 2007, jewelry designer and entrepreneur Rachel Mielke founded Hillberg & Berk with one goal in mind – empowering women through design. Rachel’s dream has now materialized and she leads a growing team inspired by her purpose. From Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, to Olympic gold medalist Tessa Virtue, the timeless, sophisticated Hillberg & Berk aesthetic helps women worldwide capture their sparkle. To date, Hillberg & Berk has contributed more than half a million dollars to both national and international organizations assisting women in their pursuit of greatness. Rachel’s ascent, marked by once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, carried her from a kitchen operation to leading a company that in 2015 ranked #115 in the 27th annual PROFIT 500 ranking of Canada’s Fastest-Growing Companies and being named one of North America’s 2015 Ernst &
Young Entrepreneurial Winning Women. Most recently, Rachel ranked at number six on the W100 list of Canada’s Top Female Entrepreneurs, moving up 38 spots from 2015.

Entrepreneur Rachel Mielke will inspire at Empowering Women conference by Joanne Paulson
Among Saskatchewan women, Rachel Mielke has become a household name. Her remarkable entrepreneurial success and her philanthropic efforts are well-known throughout the province and beyond; and she has become a sought-after inspirational speaker. Mielke is the founder of Hillberg & Berk, a jewelry company with a powerful brand focused on “sparkle,” and co-owner of Look Agency in Regina. Her glamourous jewelry has been seen on Dragons’ Den, and has been worn by Queen Elizabeth II, along with thousands of Canadian women. But for Mielke, her most important endeavour is to empower women everywhere, and she will speak on this passion at the inaugural Empowering Women Conference on Wednesday at Canada’s Farm Progress Show. “Even though Hillberg & Berk is a jewelry company, we consider ourselves to be so much more than that. We really feel our purpose as a company is to inspire sparkle in the world. My message will be very much based around that premise,” said Mielke in an interview. “There’s a universal language there, whether it’s women in business, or women in agriculture, or women in science, or women in sports. It’s about finding your sparkle to share with the world. It doesn’t really matter if I’m talking to other businesswomen or if I’m talking to girls in high school . . . it’s more about how you harness

said Mielke. “I always thought it would be, somehow, about inspiring women. As I’ve grown as a person and the company has grown, I’ve realized how we can utilize Hillberg & Berk to do something greater, to inspire sparkle in the world and help make women feel amazing about them-

It’s a lot of fun and we all love the products. But creating collaborations with charitable organizations or foundations that do amazing work — helping them financially, helping them raise money — is a meaningful part of how I’ve been able to live that dream of empowering other women.” Mielke has focused on three pillars of need in empowerment: education, inspiration and opportunity.
WOOD AND STEEL BUILDINGS FOR ALL APPLICATIONS
“There’s a tremendous amount of need,” she said. “It was important to us to pinpoint three specific areas. “For me, along the way, turning points were having exposure to incredible women who opened my eyes to what is possible: if she can do it, I can do it. You can’t be what you can’t see. For Hillberg & Berk, it’s about profiling these women, holding events that showcase them.” A powerful inspirational factor for Mielke was having her first child, a daughter. She has since

also had a son. “It motivated me to ensure she doesn’t have some of the same challenges women of older generations have had. I think that was a big push for both my husband and myself. We have this baby that’s going to grow up, and we want the world to be different for her. I would like there to be fewer barriers for her.” As an example of the barriers she refers to, Mielke cited the Canadian women’s hockey team. “They are elite athletes, but they still need to work for a living. They have jobs, they are mothers, but yet they are world-class athletes. If a woman wants to be a hockey player, there’s still such a huge discrepancy.” Mielke has also recently joined the chief executive leadership organization YPO. “You have to have certain revenues to join, and only nine per cent are women. There’s still so much distance that needs to be bridged for women,” she said. “It really starts with us, believing we can do anything that we want, and helping each other as women.”

A growing passion for veggies:
Meet Saskatchewan’s Outstanding Young Farmers of 2016 by Jennifer Jacoby-Smith
“We didn’t even know you could grow vegetables in Saskatchewan!” That’s usually the reaction Dan Erlandson gets when he says he’s a vegetable farmer from the province. What started as a way for Erlandson to make money to pay for his post-secondary education has grown into a profitable commercial venture for Erlandson and his wife Chelsea: Spring Creek Market, based near Outlook, Saskatchewan. Last year, the couple was named the Outstanding Young Farmers for Saskatchewan. Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program (OYF) is marking 37 years of honouring excellence in young Canadian farmers between the ages of 18 and 39. The annual competition celebrates those who exemplify excellence in their profession. “The purpose of the program is to promote the image of the agriculture industry in Canada,” explained Carla Kaeding, program manager. Applicants go through an intensive evaluation. Judges look at their agricultural history, stewardship and community involvement. The Saskatchewan winners are announced at a gala event at Canada’s Farm Progress Show every year. Winners then go on to represent the province at the national level, where finalists from seven different regions compete to be Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers. Two winners are chosen to represent Canada. This year’s national event takes place in November in Penticton, B.C. The OYF program is sponsored by CIBC, John Deere, Bayer, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through Growing Forward 2 – a federal provincial territorial initiative. Over the years, winners have represented almost every sector of agriculture from greenhouse plant production to potato producers to cattle or chicken farmers and more. “We are not associated with any particular sector or group. It’s the agriculture industry in
general,” said Kaeding. “It’s a very diverse group.” Erlandson said the program gave them an opportunity to see how others across Canada are promoting, growing and managing their farm businesses. “The theories of how to run your business are just invaluable.” The organization projects an overall positive attitude that encourages members to try new things and develop new strategies. Agriculture was once viewed as a labour-intensive endeavour, he added. Now, it’s more about smart business practices. “It’s always long hours obviously, but the big side of it is running the business and having a sharp pencil now I think,” said Erlandson. The Outstanding Young Farmers’ Program strives to encourage young people to pursue their dreams in agriculture. Kaeding acknowledges many young people are getting into agriculture even though they have no background in it. The Outstanding Young Farmers’ organization hopes to provide support for those looking to make a life for their family on the farm. For the Erlandsons, Dan’s dream of establishing a successful niche market garden operation has been realized. This year, Dan and Chelsea will harvest over 60 varieties of produce from 225 acres of irrigated land near Outlook. Their family farm will produce vegetable crops such as romaine lettuce, celery, broccoli, leaf lettuce, Brussels sprouts, sweet corn and much more. During the season, Spring Creek Garden provides produce for eight farmers’ markets each week in both Saskatoon and Regina. As well, Spring Creek vegetables are available at Federated Co-op in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. “We’re in an industry growing vegetables commercially that hasn’t been done outside of potatoes (in Saskatchewan),” said Erlandson. “We would like to leave a legacy of starting it and leading the way. Hopefully our industry can

Terry & Lichelle Aberhart From early childhood Terry has always had a passion for the farm, agriculture and entrepreneurial growth. He worked several years in the agriculture service industry, before returning to his family farm to manage both the farm operation and custom spraying business. Terry founded Sure Growth Technologies Inc. providing professional agronomy consulting affiliated with Agri-Trend and became an Agri-Coach in the fall of 2005. In 2009, Terry received the Business Builder of the Year award, and in 2011 and 2012 was voted MVP Agri-Coach of the Year award from Agri-Trend. Terry has had a strong focus in
the areas of precision agriculture, advancing agronomy and leveraging new technologies. He has worked in the industry and extensively on his family farm, developing precision technologies, farm research, technology and data management. He is always very eager to push the boundaries of technology and agronomy, and innovation in the agriculture community. He loves agriculture, working with the farm team, and building a culture supported by family and community to continue to grow a sustainable farm future for the next generation. He loves spending time with his wife Lichelle, daughters Sarrikah and Asceline and son Holden. He appreciates the time he gets with friends at the lake and snowboarding in the mountains. He enjoys new experiences and cultures he is introduced to while traveling and helping those in need. Lichelle grew up in the French farming community of Lorette, MB. Lichelle and Terry met as teenagers while counselling at Jackfish Bible camp. She married Terry in 1999 and jumped right into the farm life. She started her farming career as a stone picker, graduated to the harrows, then the grain cart, but once she was taught the mighty combine there was no turning back! In April of 2014 she received her Class 1 license. She now hauls seed and fertilizer during seeding, helps with spraying operations and running combine in harvest. She organizes the meals during harvest and raises three kids. Lichelle is involved in the strategic business planning and management of the farm operations. She has built a hop yard and grows seven varieties of hops. She is also very involved in the community along with working off the farm during the winter. She enjoys gardening, the outdoors and spending time with family and friends.
46 CANADA’S FARM PROGRESS SHOW PRESENTED BY VITERRA, June 2017
Derek and Tannis Axten Derek and Tannis are grain farmers from Minton, Saskatchewan with a passion for improving their greatest resource...soil! Derek was raised on Axten Farms, and after completing his diploma in Farm and Ranch Management at Olds College, Derek moved back to the family farm, to take over as the third generation operator. Tannis attended the U of R and received her Bachelor of Education majoring in Biology. In 2002, Derek and Tannis were married and moved onto the farm yard site. Derek has taken over managing the farm from his father, and Tannis, while doing some substitute teaching, also helps manage the farm. They have also added a fourth generation to the farm, Kate and Brock. After farming for a few years, Derek and Tannis became frustrated with dry, depleted soils and they sought out innovative ideas to improve their farm. While attending many workshops and conferences they met many farmers and scientists who taught them to change the way they looked at farming. This led to their journey towards soil health and regenerating their farmland. Learning about how soil functions and soil biology, has renewed their passion for farming and improved the farm’s productivity. Derek and Tannis operate a no-till farm and have improved their soil health by seeding intercrops, companion crops and cover crops. Increasing their plant diversity and intensity is feeding the soil biology which in turn is regenerating the land. Improving soil health has allowed them to reduce synthetic inputs, increase water retention and build organic matter. They have also implemented controlled traffic farming and grazing into their farming system. Derek and Tannis are excited about what they are doing on their farm and still have many new ideas they plan to try. Derek enjoys sharing their successes and failures with others throughout Western Canada and the United States, with the hopes of inspiring others to regenerate their farm’s soil health. They also enjoy being involved in the community 4H club, church, farming for the future project, swimming pool board and volunteer fire department.

Antique Tractors & Trucks Parade While the main focus of Canada’s Farm Progress Show is to look to the future of agriculture, event organizers also recognize the importance of saluting the past. Spend some time at the Antique Tractors and Trucks showcase, and see why the farm machinery technology that existed decades ago is still enjoyed today. Many of the machines have been restored to their original glory. Grab a cup of coffee and take a few minutes to chat with the owners, who will be more than happy to provide you with a truly inspiring story as to how each par-

ticular piece of equipment came to be. Visitors can view more than 100 pieces of equipment (including tractors and other farm machinery) on display in Stockman’s Arena and Hall 13. The indoor display is open all three days of the show. Twice each day, the tractors are fired up in preparation for a trip around the show grounds in the Antique Tractor Parade. The parade route is often lined with young and old alike who enjoy the sights and sounds of these small but mighty machines of the “good ol’ days.” The parade takes place daily at 10 a.m.

Bourgault’s 3320 Paralink Hoe Drill is shown paired with a 7000 Series air seeder.
From farmyard inventor to international manufacturer, Bourgault Industries is sowing seeds of success By Carol Todd
Saskatchewan has a well-deserved reputation for innovation, and many of the ideas that led to developments and products now used around the globe came from the minds and workshops of Prairie people. Take Frank Bourgault of Bourgault Industries for example. Looking out at the rocky land around St. Brieux, southeast of Prince Albert, he saw the need for an agricultural implement that would do the work of both a chisel plow and a cultivator. He started the company to manufacture an innovative dual-purpose cultivator that he had developed over a number of years. From early on, Frank Bourgault was an inventive sort of guy. As a young man, he built a gas engine-powered snow toboggan long before snowmobiles were developed. He also patented a new type of root rake for the family farm. In addition to farming, Frank was also a partner in the Massey Ferguson farm implement dealership in St. Brieux, where he earned a reputation for being able to modify equipment to suit individual farmer’s needs. Based on the success of that first dual-purpose cultivator, Frank Bourgault, Don Coquet,
and Frank’s eldest son Gerry, incorporated F.P. Bourgault Industries Ltd. on May 4, 1973 and opened the first facility at St. Brieux. The company added air seeders to its product line in 1980, which opened up a new frontier for the company. Since then, the production of seeding equipment has been the centrepiece of the company’s product line. In 1985, the company was reorganized into two divisions. F.P. Bourgault Industries Cultivator Division Ltd. remained at the original site in the village of St. Brieux and F.P. Bourgault Industries Air Seeder Division Ltd. was located just half a mile north of St. Brieux. In 1991, the Cultivator Division sold the large equipment product line to the Air Seeder Division to focus exclusively on the tillage tools line. The new company was called F.P. Bourgault Tillage Tools Ltd. Since its formation in 1991, F.P Bourgault Tillage Tools Ltd. has greatly expanded its product line and market area, becoming a world leader in field opener technology. In 2006, Bourgault acquired Highline Mfg. Inc. of Vonda and renamed it Highline Manufacturing Ltd. Gerard (Gerry) Bourgault, now the president of the company, attributes its success to its commitment to excellence. “We have a perfection-

ist culture,” he says. “Our people manufacture the highest quality products in the industry, and we achieve this result because of the quality and the commitment of our people.” That level of excellence was recently recognized by the Equipment Dealers’ Association (formerly the North American Equipment Dealers’ Association), which awarded Bourgault Industries the 2016 Gold Level in the shortline manufacturers category. Bourgault says that the other major contributing factor is the people who work for the company in all its divisions. While maintaining the family relationships, the company also continues to follow founder Frank’s commitment to hiring local people whenever possible. Bourgault credits the quality of its people for driving its success. “They go the extra mile to get the job done or to help our dealers meet the needs of their customers. While our mission is to design and manufacture the world’s best equipment, the most fundamental purpose for our company’s existence is to improve the lives of the people who work for it,” he says. The company has been on hand to showcase its products at Canada’s Farm Progress Show every year since the show began 40 years ago. Bourgault considers it to be its premier event for showing farmers and dealers the latest developments in its product line. This year, Bourgault will feature the 360 Soil Preparation System, which lets the farmer clean up extreme, messy fields and prepare the field to seed in a singlepass in most conditions. Bourgault says the show also lets the company connect with the international community and increase its presence worldwide. In addition to an office and facility in Minot, N.D., Bourgault also has facilities in Australia and has developed markets in Eastern Europe and Asia, primarily in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Re-

STORMY WEATHER? Prairie farmers rely on this expert’s long-range forecasts to get the job done by Carol Todd
Forecasting the weather has come a long way since Gronk first walked out of the cave and held out his hand to see if the sky was dropping water on him. With satellite imagery and computer modelling, weather forecasters now have a wealth of technological support to help predict whether the weather will be good or foul. It could be argued that nowhere is accurate knowledge of upcoming weather more important than here on the prairies, where agriculture still plays a leading role in the economy, and in people’s lives. Drew Lerner, president and senior agricultural meteorologist of World Weather Inc., an international weather service, says it is critical for those involved in agriculture to know what to expect, especially during the growing season. “The farming community is a very much taken for granted group of people that works very hard and struggles every day to get their job done,” he says. “My heart goes out to those folks, and we can provide them with a leg up, so to speak, by giving them better information for
them to base their decisions, such as when to get out into the field and when not to, and that sort of thing.” World Weather is an international agriculture forecasting service that provides daily forecasts for every major agriculture region of the world by subscription. “We serve the commodities marketplace. We serve farmers around the world, and agriculture companies ‒ everyone in the food chain – whether it’s growing the crop or selling the product or transporting the product,” Lerner says. In addition to a detailed daily outlook, the company also offers subscribers seasonal outlooks, as well as extended updates every few weeks. “They can see if the 60-day outlook has changed, so they are not caught off guard if there’s a change in the weather. We also do seasonal outlooks,” he says. Lerner, who says he was “born a weather freak,” has been forecasting the weather for almost 40 years and still enjoys the work. “Absolutely,” he says, adding that he has some “roots in agriculture, too, so it’s all of interest.” But, no one it seems can predict what effect

the weather phenomenon known as El Niño will have on Saskatchewan’s weather this year. El Niño is a climate cycle in the Pacific Ocean that has a global impact on weather patterns. Forecasters declare an official El Niño when they see both ocean temperatures and rainfall
Will an El Niño event bring warm, dry weather to Saskatchewan, or can we expect a stormy summer? have a ridge of high pressure already present over central North America, so, if there is a full El Niño effect in July and August, it will tend to dry down the prairies a little bit more. The bottom line is that it will give us drier, warmer conditions, especially in the west; a little wetter in the east,” he says. If there is no El Niño, Lerner expects the summer to see more rainfall across the prairies. With the wide range of technology currently
from storms veer from west to east. Lerner expects we’ll know by the time Canada’s Farm Progress Show takes place June 21 to 23 in Regina. In the meantime, Lerner can advise what will happen if there is, in fact, an El Niño event this year. Or not. While El Niño is of greatest influence in the winter, bringing warm, dry weather, Lerner says its summer influence depends on the prevailing weather patterns. “In this case, summer is supposed to

Libra TMR (Total Mixed Ration) is a tablet- and smartphone-based ration weighing and data management system that delivers a smart and simple way to track what is being loaded and unloaded in a feed mixer. The weatherproof Libra TMR hardware mounts directly onto a feed mixer, replacing any existing traditional scale indicator and connects to any industry standard load cells (scales) on the mixer. The Libra TMR app, which communicates to the device via Bluetooth, allows users to input and create their own ingredients, rations, pens and feed groups. Based on head count and lb/head that is entered, the system will calculate and weigh exactly how much of each ingredient in a ration needs to be loaded into the mixer, and will guide the user through and track what has been fed to each pen. Other features include remote viewing of the weights, feeding and loading on a dry-matter or wet-weight basis, feed adjustment, bunk readings and more. Data can be exported via email and open up with standard spreadsheet software (Excel, etc.). In the future, Libra TMR will sync to Agrimatics’ cloud service, Agrimatics Aero.

Derek Rude T: 306-231-3122 E: derek.rude@croprecords.com Hall 12 - 12195 SWAT Maps and SWATBOX SWAT MAPS (Soil Water and Topography Maps) is a process invented and used by CropPro Consulting to provide variable rate seed and fertilizer prescriptions to Western Canadian farmers. CropPro’s goal through the use of the SWAT MAPS process is to provide its customers with the optimal seed and fertilizer rates for differing areas of their fields in order to maximize yield while not over applying inputs and even out plant population and crop maturity. SWATBOX is a newly developed tool used to collect the soil electrical conductivity data layer required for the SWAT MAPS zoning process. The SWATBOX is unique because it is powered by and towed behind a farmer’s air seeder cart, toolbar, or fertilizer cart and does not require the attention of or adjustment by the operator of the tractor. Once the SWATBOX receives electrical power from the tractor it automatically starts recording geo referenced field data.

With one hydraulic cylinder, on solid axle bulk material conveyors and two cylinders on adjustable axle conveyors, mounted between frame and axle, the Auger Side Shift allows the operator to reposition discharge side- to-side to help align discharge spout into bin port. When backing conveyors into position a slight error in judgment or uneven ground at the carrier wheels can misalign discharge, so this will allow corrections without having to drive ahead and reposition the whole unit and makes it easier to line up to bins with smaller port openings (older bins). With the series – parallel hydraulic arrangements, conveyors with adjustable axles don’t need to be jacked up to extend and retract wheels.
Lewis Cattle Oiler (Alberta) Ltd.
Clint Hutton T: 403-854-4190 E: d-hutton@hotmail.com Hall 12 – 12119, 12121 Alberta Made Cattle Oiler The product is a machine that enables livestock to treat themselves with chemical or organic pesticide to help control various parasites such as flies, mosquitoes, lice and ticks. The rubbing element descends on an approximate 45 degree angle. The inner core (mostly felt recycled from between springs and foam in a mattress) will be exchangeable and rebuilt at an affordable price for future maintenance. The height of the rubbing element is high enough that animals such as bison used this machine without any hesitation but were intimidated by the closeness of previous products. The height of the bottom of the rubbing element also worked well for small calves to utilize the insect repellent on the lower side of the rubbing element as well as larger animals. The attached weather vane mineral feeder helps attract the livestock to the machine so they will more readily scratch on the angled rubbing element as well as the optional horizontal separate tank fed blanket. The tank drape attachment has a round tank (used oilfield yellow jacket) with a blanket hanging down below it. As the livestock rock the tank with their backs, the rolling motion allows internal semicircular curved tubes to pick up a small amount of fluid to replenish the blanket with more repellant solution. The rolling motion happens because the tank is hanging off a grade-8 bolt pin centred on each end.

tions on a strong fixed height frame. Each section is connected to the booms with parallel arms for 26inch of independent vertical travel and level section placement regardless of contour position. Seven rows of 1/2 x 22-inch tines are available with either carbide treated tines on the first two rows, or on the entire unit. The greatest feature of the XR 770 is Adjustable Down Force. (ADF) This patent pending design employs hydraulically controlled down force (or up force) to each harrow section, ensuring a uniform field finish even in hills or through runs. ADF ensures that the down force of the harrow section is constant regardless of contour position, isolated from other adjustments and easily adjustable via hydraulic pressure. Limited Release for 2017. SPS 360 Soil Prep System Bourgault is excited to offer the all-new SPS 360, a complete soil prep system that will help farmers make trashy, rutted up fields seed ready in a single-pass in most field conditions. This is achieved with a combination of cutting coulters, heavy-duty shanks, harrows, and rolling baskets that will cut, distribute and incorporate heavy straw while also breaking up clumps and relevelling and firming the soil. The SPS 360 is a durably designed primary tillage unit with a robust frame that can stand up to working in extreme conditions at the recommended operating speeds of 7-1/2 to 8-1/2 mph. 1. Coulter Section - The coulter section effectively sizes residue with notched 20-inch diameter straight coulters placed on 12-inch centres. 2. Shank Section - The 12-foot spaced heavyduty hydraulic trip springs can provide up to 1,000 lb. of trip force. The trips can be lifted and locked out during operation. 3. Harrow Section - The harrow sections are arranged in 4-foot to 8-foot wide sections with reinforced mounts and parallel harrow arms designed for long service life in aggressive higher speed operation. 4. Finishing Section - The 14-inch diameter rolling baskets level the soil, creating an even and firm surface ready for the upcoming seeding system. A limited number of units are available for Spring 2017 in 40-foot and 50-foot operating widths.

best beer ingredients grow here The world’s by Mike Shiplack
One man’s tool shed is another man’s place to roast coffee and start a brewery that blends together the passions of farmers, malters and brewers under one tin roof. On Thursday, June 22, people at Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina will be able to hear all about this unique prairie success story. “Everyone looks at our part of the world as oil and gas, but when the oil prices are in the toilet it’s great that our provinces can diversify with agriculture,” said Graham Sherman, who co-founded Calgary’s Tool Shed Brewing with his partner Jeff Orr in 2012. “But it can’t just be the farmers yelling about how great our provinces are. The conversation needs to come from the grower, the malter, the brewer and the end user. Now that is a conversation that should be a circle and not just a straight line.” Some people have hobbies, others have obsessions and Sherman and Orr are the type of people who can’t tell the difference between the two. “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth going way too far,” said Sherman. This includes building a charcoal barbecue pit that measures both the temperature of the air and the heat off the coals. Sherman then wrote an algorithm that automatically adjusts the roasting of meat within half a degree of perfection, and then the barbecue sends a tweet once ready. But that was before Sherman and Orr discovered that they could also make fantastic beer in the tool shed. They also realized that the prairies grow some of the best barley in the world – a key ingredient to fantastic beer. “That’s when you walk into the house and tell your wife that you are not going to make money but beer!” said Sherman. “When you find that thing that you want to do for the rest of your life, all you want to do is quit your well-

So unless you had a multi-million dollar operation already built, you couldn’t apply to be a brewery in Alberta,” explained Sherman. Everything changed in December 2013 when the Alberta Small Brewers’ Association finally convinced the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission to revise key policies, allowing Alberta to be more competitive in the growing craft beer industry. Today, Tool Shed manages a distribution network encompassing 1,000-plus liquor stores

across Western Canada. Not only is it easier to find quality beer, craft beer enthusiasts can now find beer that is made right here on the prairies and with ingredients that were also grown under that big beautiful prairie sky. “Craft beer appeals to our evolving palate,” said Sherman, adding that craft beer is made by “people who put their love and passion into the ingredients.” Sherman adds, “These prairies are where the best grains are grown. It’s an incredible thing when your local ingredient is the best on earth. That’s something worth taking pride in.” Learn more about Tool Shed Brewing’s philosophy at the Farm Progress Forum presented by Farm Credit Canada. Sherman will speak on June 22 at 2:15 p.m. Admission is included with your show ticket.

How will 3D printing revolutionize the ag industry? By Jonathan Hamelin
People who attend Canada’s Farm Progress Show this year will have the opportunity to take a three-dimensional look at what some are calling the future of the agriculture industry. Thor 3D from Outlook, Saskatchewan is a MakerBot distributor that will be showcasing 3D printers in action at the event. According to Steven Thorstad, the company’s sales manager, farmers have plenty of reasons to be excited about 3D printing. “The 3D printing industry has made tremendous strides, especially when it comes to ease of use – now it’s not much more difficult than printing sheets of paper off a standard printer – and we’re just starting to see it breaking into the agriculture industry,” Thorstad said. “It’s going to revolutionize portions of the agricultural industry. “We’ve found that people are really drawn to the 3D printers at trade shows. It’s eye-catching technology and people are very amazed by it and impressed by the level of detail.” 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process that begins with a threedimensional object created with a computer program like AutoCad. Code is sent to the 3D printer, which builds a solid object, layer by layer, based on the design. In the agriculture industry, Thorstad said this technology is already being used amongst the research and development teams of farm manufacturing companies that are looking to create prototypes. “When you’re creating a new product, eventually you get to a stage where you need a physical copy in your hand to test it and make sure it does what you’re expecting. You can simulate your product on the computer all day long, but it’s not the same,” Thorstad said. “The benefit of 3D printing is that you can get next-day or same-day turnaround on parts you

If a company has got an idea, even if it’s not necessarily a great idea, they’ll often 3D print it and try it because the cost is so low.” As Thorstad explains, the benefits of 3D printers for farmers are quickly expanding outside research and development to parts replacement. An equipment breakdown can be devastating to a farmer, because if the part is unique and not in stock it can take weeks to get a new one. During harvest, this is valuable time wasted. But by approaching a local 3D printing company, Thorstad said replacement parts can be printed within a day. “One of the most common materials used in a 3D printer is plastic, so if a farmer breaks something like a knob or a plastic piece, not a

high stress part, they could get a brand new replacement part printed without any of the lead time,” Thorstad said. “Locally, we’ve had a few farmers who broke unique parts that don’t otherwise exist. We’ve printed replacements for them. Obviously, they’re very, very happy with that because it’s a part they need to make their machine work.” Thorstad admits there are currently some limitations preventing 3D printing from expanding further into the agriculture industry. Namely, there aren’t affordable 3D printers that can print using metal material. But Thorstad feels this day is coming. “When the metal 3D printers aren’t as expensive, farmers will be able to go to their local metal 3D printer when they need a replacement part. They will have a catalogue and the

customers will be able to come back in 24 hours,” Thorstad said. “A lot of manufacturers already have the 3D designs, so I don’t think it’s a huge stretch for them to make those designs available to customers, whether it’s a subscription model where they pay to access parts they need, or having them buy the physical parts, or something in-between.” And once larger-scale machines are more readily available, Thorstad said people shouldn’t be surprised to find printers creating large portions of a tractor. “There are some open source movements to take the ideas of the 3D printer and expand them,” Thorstad said.

How Do You Eat An Elephant? Tackling Succession Planning One Bite At A Time The concepts of “succession planning” & “retirement” are frequently intertwined when discussed among farmers & their advisers because the ownership of farm property is seldom separated from the business of farming. It is best to consider farm succession separately from property ownership as mentoring, management & ownership are very different. Understanding these terms will meaningfully assist in the transition of the farm from one generation to the next.
What is Succession Planning? It is a process, not an event, for identifying & mentoring family members with the potential & desire to assume key farming & leadership responsibilities of a farm business
It prepares the next generation in farming techniques & management skills so that trusted family members are equipped to assume responsible roles as they become available
It ensures the farm business continues to operate smoothly after those currently in control retire or pass away
It is NOT Retirement Planning or Estate Planning although it is best to address,
Too often the focus is solely on the transfer of ownership of farm property and not succession planning. Making affairs more difficult, the retirement & estate plan of the seceding generation is seldom considered.
co-ordinate & implement all three together
Critical Components of Farm Succession: Control, Decision Making, & Property Ownership These 3 critical components of farm succession planning must be discussed & agreed upon by everyone involved. Unfortunately, farm families often fail to separate control & decision making from property ownership, leading to strained family relations and an under performing farm business. To assist with succession planning, a farming business can separate “The Farm” into an operational entity & a property ownership entity. This separation makes succession planning easier as it allows: a logical transition from 1 generation to the next, separates the transfer of the family farm from personal wealth, assists in understanding what “succession planning” addresses, & leads to productive discussions between generations.
Conclusion The farm family must consider the many different faces of succession planning. That is, the transition of management, decision making & ownership of the farming business, and separating personal wealth from the operating assets & farm operations. It then must be decided which alternative is best, considering both generations, with an emphasis on the retiring generation’s retirement & estate. Donavon K.
