Introduction The key linking all five partners of our project „Maths around us” was Mathematics. Our main aim was to improve Maths skills of students by perceiving Maths issues in their closest surrounding world. Students were encouraged to do their best to solve Maths tasks and to find similarities and differences between the environments of five participated schools by using a wide range of different ICT applications with English language as language of communication between partners. The project was divided into five parts:     

“Maths in kitchen” with Italian school responsible “Maths in vehicles” with Bulgarian school responsible “Maths in buildings” with Turkish school responsible “Maths in nature” with Polish school responsible “Maths in games” with Spanish school responsible

Project aims The project priority was to develop maths, ICT, English and social skills by solving a wide range of tasks. Students awareness of maths existing everywhere increased and all time maths accompanies humans’ life. Teachers tried to design such tasks where finding solution or understanding the topic needed to use ICT applications free and available on the Internet and needed to work in group or pair work. Working on tasks needed to use English language. All games, presentations, interviews, maths tasks, lessons students prepared in English. During motilities they also communicated and solved all tasks using this language. Before and after the project they solved English diagnostic test. Most of them achieved A2 level as it was expected. One of the project purpose was to develop ICT skills which are very important in contemporary world. Students were familiarized with a wide range of applications. They are free and can be easily found on the Internet. The list of apps used in the project: tagxego, smilebox, match memory game, hotpotatoes, issue, tools educator, you tube, comiclife, iMovie, moviemaker, doc.google, shapecollag, quizlet, dropbox, same quizy, symbaloo, proprofs, answergarden, socrative, kahoot, monkeyjam, blog, google maps, easly.ly, fodey, pikochart, webpage, edycaplay, blubbr, prezi, tondoo, padlet. Social and cooperation skills Doing project activities our students developed social skills. They mainly worked in pairs or in a groups enriching cooperation skills. During mobilities our students cooperated in international groups using English as language of mutual cooperation. All results of our mutual work were uploaded to eTwinning platform, our blog and our facebook.

The first stage “Maths in kitchen” In the first part “Maths in kitchen” students were familiar with different measures, weights, proportion, cubic volume, geometric shape area, net, gross weight and tara.

Activity 1 – Maths tasks in the kitchen All countries prepared their characteristic dishes in the way of maths tasks adding information about their historical backgrounds. They presented recipes for ice cream, cakes, pierogi – traditional Polish dish, chocolate.

Activity 2 – Interviews Students found the recipes for traditional dishes by making interviews with their oldest relatives. All recipes were carefully written down and shared with students from the project. They added information about traditions of the dishes, what season they are prepared in their countries and why. Reading the interviews we also could meet old generation and their opinion about eating. It was the eating trip to the past for all of us.

W moim domu zazwyczaj jadało sie świeże, sezonowe warzywa i gotowany drób. Chleb był ciężki i ciemny, pieczony w domu. Poza sezonem jedliśmy przetwory z warzyw (kiszonki) i suszone owoce. Podczas wojny brakowało jedzenia, jedliśmy głównie ziemniaki i to też nie codziennie. The interview was conducted with my great-grandmother Janina Kroczak who comes from Dobrków near Debica and she is 87 years old now. - Grandma what did you usually eat as a child? - Before the war, the food was varied. In my house I usually I ate fresh, seasonal vegetables and cooked poultry. The bread was heavy and dark, baked at home. Out of season we had processed vegetables (silage) and dried fruits. During the war we did not have much food, we ate mainly potatoes and not also every day. Dziś nasza dieta jest bardziej zróżnicowana, ale też zjadane przez nas produkty są bardziej przetworzone. Sezonowe dawniej warzywa i owoce są dostępne przez cały rok, ale są pozbawione aromatu. Today our diet is more varied, but also our products are more processed. Seasonal vegetables and fruit are available year round, but they are devoid of flavor.

It was the meal prepared for children, when they began eat no, because cooked bread is suitable for children and the oil (used in it )has got great nutritional values. Later, you put all the vegetables n the bread, add more oil and garlic (in tiny pieces ) with mint. And now : Enjoy your meal !

Activity 5 – Nutrition game Example 1 A Maths game concerning nutrition was created. It was called “Culinary jackpot”. Cards have pictures of many eating products with their calories. Playing the cards students can remember the calories number and more aware which products are rich and which have less calories. How to play: 1.This is a game for many .We are limited only by the number of cards. You can join two packs of carts if there are too many people. 2. Shuffle all cards and put them on the table. Choose one person who will be responsible for distributing cards. 3. Each person gets one card in one deal. Player decides how many cards he or she wants to get. The most important is the number of calories on the cards. 4. Each player can say stop when the number of calories on the cards he or she gets is close to 1600. 1600 calories is the best number for an average person who doesn’t work very hard. 5. The winner is a person who has no more than 1600 calories on his or her cards and the number is the closest to 1600.

Summary There is only the part of results worked in the first stage of the project “Maths in kitchen”. Students created power point and prezi presentations, interviews, maths tasks, photo shows, songs, poems, comics, maths dictionary and a game about calories. Students became aware how important is maths in kitchen, how to count the appropriate amount of ingredients, how to change units used in the kitchen, how to count calories in the products, what is nutrition pyramid, what is healthy diet, how the eating habits have changed during two or three generations, they shared with traditional recipes and their histories. All students’ works were presented on eTwinning project “Maths in kitchen”, facebook and our blog. In this way they could see and follow all works immediately, could compare, comment and find similarities and differences. All works were written or translated in English and presented by means of free applications found on the Internet so students woks were uploaded in interesting and exciting way.
