INDIANA STATE

MUSEUM

Frozen Reign: A State of Change Journey through the Ice Age, beginning with a trip through a chilly ice tunnel. See how you size up against various prehistoric animals, wind your way through replicas of ancient caves and go toe-to-tusk with the real skeletons of Ice Age giants. First Nations: The Story of Indiana’s Founding People Learn about the vibrant communities built by Indiana’s Native Americans and how traditions are alive today. See rare artifacts, sniff spices used in cooking, enjoy interactive video experiences and more. FIND WHAT’S NEXT...

IN OUR NEWEST EXPERIENCES

Creativity Studio – Nature Edition (open through July 11) Step inside our nature-inspired Creativity Studio to explore the colors, shapes and patterns of our natural world. Use your imagination as you choose nature-based loose parts to make land art, sculptures and animal habitats. Step in front of our shadow wall to make colorful images that wiggle, jump and dance along with you. Surround yourself in natural colored light and bright images and see how it makes you feel. Play with wooden blocks and shapes to create animals, plants and even crystals, or design your own desert landscape using sand and wind to make patterns. Let the natural world inspire you to be creative! The Artwork of Carole Wantz: Collected Stories from Columbus, Indiana (open through July 25) In the 1970s and early ’80s, Carole Wantz painted a wide variety of subjects in Columbus, Indiana. This was an era in which business was booming and life was good for many in the small American city. Her paintings range from deeply personal portraits of an entire family to individual community events to whimsical perspectives into life in rural Indiana. She painted for business, community and political leaders, making her paintings highly sought-after status symbols for some. This exhibit on the Thomas A. King Bridge gallery features more than 30 of her paintings from 1975 to 1985. The Indiana State Museum coordinated with Landmark Columbus to present these works, which have been borrowed from collectors for the artist’s first retrospective. 6

FIX: Heartbreak and Hope Inside Our Opioid Crisis (open through Aug. 1) Last year, the opioid epidemic met the COVID pandemic, and life for Hoosiers got a lot harder. We saw morale go down. And hopelessness go up. We walked through isolation and quarantine not knowing what to do next. And our opioid problem got bigger.

Supported by:

Experience this award-winning exhibit and discover how a mix of art, science, multi-media, hands-on interactives, inspiring artwork and personal stories can empower all of us to change the course of this opioid epidemic.

RESPONSE: Images and Sounds of a Movement (June 5 through Sept. 6) Like much of the nation, Indianapolis experienced days of protests in June 2020. Artists stepped up to quickly express their frustrations and hopes. Now, one year later, the Indiana State Museum, Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Public Library are teaming up to present exhibitions of murals painted by these artists after the protests, and hold discussions designed to increase community understanding of what occurred and why. Visit Legacy Theater to see the six murals painted by Indianapolis artists and business owners. This exhibit is free to the public. Sponsored by: State of Nature: Picturing Indiana Biodiversity (open through Sept. 19) Experience the astonishing beauty and discover the importance of Indiana’s biological diversity through pieces from the natural world and artworks created by artists with Indiana connections. Explore how forests and ecological diversity in Indiana defined the lives of Hoosiers over the years, then consider how urbanization and climate change has impacted Indiana’s biological system and our everyday lives. Children will enjoy hands-on activities including building a bird’s nest and piecing together a giant sloth claw. The exhibit was developed in collaboration with the Grunwald Gallery of Art, Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design, Indiana University, Bloomington. 7
