RESPONSE: IMAGES AND SOUNDS OF A MOVEMENT Open through Sept. 6, 2021
Like much of the nation, Indianapolis experienced days of protests in June 2020. Artists stepped up to quickly express their frustrations and hopes. Now, one year later, the Indiana State Museum, Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Public Library are teaming up to present exhibitions of murals painted by these artists after the protests, and hold discussions designed to increase community understanding of what occurred and why. Visit Legacy Theater on Level One to see six murals painted by Indianapolis artists and business owners. This exhibit is free to the public.

97TH ANNUAL HOOSIER SALON Aug. 21 through Oct. 24, 2021
Enjoy artworks from Hoosier artists from around the state in what’s considered to be the preeminent juried exhibition of Indiana art at the annual Hoosier Salon. See paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, sculpture, glass creations and more.
CELEBRATION CROSSING Nov. 26, 2021 through Jan. 2, 2022
Celebration Crossing has a new train ride this year! Head up to the Level Three to hop on the Snowfall Express. Journey through the forest populated by animals celebrating the coming winter and first snowfall. Late autumn and winter scenes come alive with charming, whimsical characters, movement and music. You’ll encounter critters putting on their warm winter clothes, baking cozy meals and enjoying winter sports. Our new, easily accessible train will allow everyone to enjoy the nearly five-minute trip together. Many favorites are back this year including visits with Santa, activities in Santa’s Front Yard, the 92 County Tree, Breakfast with Santa, Tea with Lovey, Winter Wonderland Workshops and more. Entry to Celebration Crossing is included in the price of museum admission.

STATE OF NATURE: PICTURING INDIANA BIODIVERSITY Open through Sept. 19, 2021
Experience the astonishing beauty and discover the importance of Indiana’s biological diversity through pieces from the natural world and artworks created by artists with Indiana connections. Explore how forests and ecological diversity in Indiana defined the lives of Hoosiers over the years, then consider how urbanization and climate change has impacted Indiana’s biological system and our everyday lives.

HOW PEOPLE MAKE THINGS Jan. 22 through May 15, 2022
This exhibit from the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh brings the manufacturing experience to life, taking students onto the factory floor through hands-on activities. They can cut wax using different sculpting tools, deform a wire by making a straight wire into a spring shape by winding it around the metal shaft, and assemble a trolley and test their skills on the testing track. Also, see Fred Rogers visit real manufacturing factories in vintage PicturePicture videos from the original Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Series.
RECENT ACQUISITIONS: INDIANA STATE MUSEUM AND HISTORIC SITES FINE ART COLLECTION Late January through July 11, 2022
This exhibit features a wide range of newly acquired historical and contemporary works of art from the museum’s permanent collection. Possessing one of the largest state-owned art collections in the country, the museum actively collects works by artists who were born or live in Indiana, attended one of the state’s institutions of higher learning, or whose artistic development was significantly impacted by Indiana. MAJOR TAYLOR: FASTEST CYCLIST IN THE WORLD March 5 through Oct. 23, 2022
An interactive exhibit focusing on Taylor’s legacy, the sport of cycling, bicycle design and technology, and the roles bicycles play in our lives today.
