SPECIAL FEATURE AN IN-DEPTH FEATURE

INTO THE LIFE & MUSIC OF

STORY BY STEPHAN NOACK

If you’ve spent anytime in the Coastal Bend Bay Area, more than likely you’ve experienced the influence from a young singer and songwriter that are is still present and a big part of Corpus Christi to this day. This singer-songwriter is known to her fans as The Queen of Tejano Music. She is Selena Quintanilla Perez and her legacy permeates the spirit of Corpus Christi. Born in Lake Jackson, Texas, on April 16, 1971, Selena was the youngest child of three born to Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla, her hardworking and supportive parents. A popular Mexican-American musician himself, Abraham recognized early on that Selena had the talent to go far. “Her timing and her pitch were perfect, I could see it from day one,” he told People magazine when Selena was only 6-years-old.

Selena performs at the 1995 Houston Rodeo while exuding charisma and beauty. Selena was one of the most promising performers to have ever emerged out of the Tejano music scene.

RISE TO THE TOP In 1986, at the Tejano Music Awards, Selena won the Best Female Vocalist award – an award that she would continue to win each year through 1996. Throughout these accomplished years, Selena caught the attention of many different record labels, including EMI Latin, which signed the performer and released the selftitled album Selena the same year. During the early 1990s, Selena’s career gained traction and took flight with her 1990 release of Mis Primeros Exitos, a small collection of her best ‘80s songs re-recorded and re-mastered. This also led as well as to her first gold status album - Ven Conmingo. She topped the charts for the first time in 1991, with a duet sung with

and managed their new band Selena y Los Dinos. The family was dedicated to promoting and booking the band, all the while, taking their music across Texas. Over time, that perseverance paid off – but it didn’t come easy. Soon after the band’s relevance and popularity grew, the demand on the band grew heavy and was affecting Selena’s school schedule with weekly traveling and performances. Seeing the drive of Selena and her siblings, Abraham Jr. went against the grain and advice of educators and withdrew her from school when she was in the 8th grade.

While the family continued their focus on the music, Abraham encouraged Selena to continue her education. Four years later at age 17, Selena received her diploma through correspondence courses and later enrolled in College seeking a major in Business Administration.

THE EARLY YEARS During those early years, the Quintanilla family opened Papa Gayos, their first Tex-Mex restaurant in Lake Jackson where Selena – along with her brother Abraham III (A.B.) on bass guitar and her sister Suzette on drums – entertained guests. Those sessions at her fathers’ restaurant launched Selena’s career and added to her legacy. Faced with hard times during the oil recession of the 1980s, the Quintanilla family picked up the pieces and relocated to Corpus Christi where Abraham Jr. formed

Salvadoran singer, Alvaro Torres, with the hit song Buenos Amigos. The next year, she released Entre a Mi Mundo, which also went gold and contained one of her biggest hits, Como La Flor. Throughout all of her success and fame, Selena found love and married Chris Perez, the lead guitarist of Los Dinos, on April 2, 1992. The chart topping success didn’t stop there and in 1993, she won a Grammy award for Best MexicanAmerican performance for her album Selena Live, which was recorded at a concert in Corpus Christi. She and also began a clothing line modeled after her unique eye-catching wardrobe, which she designed since she was 15-years-old. She soon opened two boutiques to feature her fashion designs, one in Corpus Christi and another in San Antonio.

[ [ “The life of an artist isn’t all glamorous. It’s a lot of work. A lot of people think it’s very easy. They think you always stay in good hotels, you buy good things, but it’s not like that. You have to work hard like everybody else.” ~ Selena Quintanilla

Throughout the early 1990s, Selena continued her success and made a mark on Mexican-American culture and the Latin music industry. In 1994, her album Amor Prohibido was nominated for a Grammy award and she made appearances in Latin soap operas and had another No. 1 number one hit on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks, Donde Quiera Que Estés.

In 1995, Selena had no signs of slowing down with a cameo appearance in the romantic comedy Don Juan DeMarco, starring Johnny Depp, Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway. She also become the first female Latin artist to be signed to SBK, a sister label of EMI Latin with the intent of promoting her upcoming planned English album. HER LAST PERFORMANCE On February 26, 1995, she performed at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo in the Houston Astrodome to more than 61,000 fans. No one ever predicted this would be the last live performance for the young and successful singer – who was now on the road to super stardom. On March 31, 1995, in a Corpus Christi hotel, Selena was killed by her fan club president and the manager of her boutiques, Yolanda Saldivar. MAY 2016

THE LEGACY LIVES ON On March 27, 1997, the movie Selena was released. Directed by Gregory Nava and starring Jennifer Lopez as Selena, the movie helps preserve Selena’s legacy, while exposing new generations to her music. Now, more than 20 years after her death, Selena continues to be a presence in the lives of her fans and has become an icon in Latin culture with her own Selena MAC lipstick line launching in October 2016 and as a featured tribute in the annual Fiesta de la Flor Music Festival in Corpus Christi, Texas. The annual festival, started in 2015, had an economic impact of $13 million dollars and drew in over 52,000 fans from around the world in order to celebrate the legacy of Selena. This year, the festival is being held in Downtown Corpus Christi on May 6th-7th, 2016.

Selena’s death left her multitude of fans in mourning. Her funeral was attended by approximately 60,000 people and the family received condolences from many dignitaries and music stars such as Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias and Madonna. Even after her death, Selena’s legacy still continued to grow and shine bright in many ways including a People magazine tribute issue titled Selena – Her Life in Pictures, which quickly sold out. In the Summer of 1995, the album Dreaming of You – a compilation of Spanish songs and four English songs that Selena had recorded for her planned English cross-over album, was released. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making Selena the first Latin artist to ever accomplish that goal. Dreaming of You and another hit, I could Fall in Love, were played throughout the United States on mainstream radio.

FISHING

COASTAL BEND Fishing in the Coastal Bend Bay area is excellent all year round. In the Coastal Bend, there are typically three kinds of fishing; Shallow Water, Deep Water and Fresh Water.

SHALLOW WATER Along the bays, Laguna Madre and the shores of Padre Island and Port Aransas is where you’ll catch speckled trout, redfish, whiting, drum and flounder. DEEP WATER Typically, off the shores of Port Aransas to Rockport are “where they bite everyday”. Whether you’re in a private or chartered boat, sport fishermen can try for amberjack, red snapper and tuna year round - if you’re searching for a big marlin and bill fish, you’re best bet is from May to September.

26 COASTAL BEND VISITORS GUIDE

FRESH WATER Located 40 miles northwest of Corpus Christi in Mathis, at Lake Corpus Christi, there are 200 miles of shoreline with excellent fishing for bass, catfish and crappie.
