Welcome to Age Cymru Gwent… Thank you for picking up our guide. We hope we can make a difference to you or someone you know. Age Cymru Gwent is a vibrant local independent charity working for over 50 year olds in the local authority areas of Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire and Torfaen. We are responsive to the needs of older people and are effective and accountable. As an organisation we make a real difference to older people’s lives. Each year we raise and spend over £1.6 million and assist over 20,000 individuals to maximise their freedom of choice and control over their own lives. A board of 9 Trustees, more than 130 paid staff and over 100 volunteers work together to achieve our principal objective… ‘Delivering services to meet the needs and support the independence of people over 50.’ This brochure will tell you about some of the services we currently offer and how you can get in touch to find out more.

Age Cymru Gwent is regarded as the leader in the field of high quality services to older people. We believe that older people should be treated as full members of society with equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities. In all our work we respect and value them as individuals in terms of their dignity, status, and personal autonomy, diversity of needs, aspirations and expectations. In challenging times, it is essential that an organisation like Age Cymru Gwent listens to older people and responds effectively to their needs. It is also vital that we communicate the views and aspirations of older people to politicians and others in authority so that they can deliver the most effective services. This we do. Age Cymru Gwent delivers direct services to over 20,000 people per year in Gwent. It represents the views of older people at all levels of Government and publicly advocates on their behalf. Our aim is to work with older people and to address any issues which can have an effect on maintaining independence, quality of life or general well-being. We offer a free, confidential service, delivering information and advice to help manage daily living. From how to access community care, how to make a Will or how to deal with consumer issues. Our team of advisors is ready to share its massive range of information with you.

The service facilitates a number of afternoon activity clubs across Monmouthshire and a lunch club in Abergavenny. Transport can be provided by mini bus.

Our professional team of staff and volunteers can guide you through the complicated benefits system. We offer a full entitlement check and hands-on help to apply for what you’re entitled to and how to challenge decisions you weren’t expecting.

If you’re thinking about future accommodation needs, you will want to know what could be available and how to access them. We can provide you with a range of information from residential care to Extra Care housing schemes or grants and aids to future proof your home. We’ll even help you fill out the forms.

Digital Inclusion

The digital inclusion project operates Gwent wide and is able to help people 50+ to use equipment such as smartphones, laptops, or tablets to access the internet. Our trained staff and volunteers can show you have to skype, email, use Facebook, Twitter, online shopping or YouTube. We can deliver 1:1 sessions in your own home or workshop sessions at community venues. You can use your own equipment or we can provide tablets on a trial basis before you purchase your own.

Have you been in hospital? We’re here to help you get back on your feet. We provide support with welfare benefits, shopping and other practical tasks and someone to talk to for up to 6 weeks after discharge, just enough time to settle you back home.

Blaenau Gwent Carers Project offers confidential advice and information to carers aged 18 or more. Amongst other things, advice may be given on benefits, care assessments and respite options. The project produces a twice-yearly newsletter. Special events for carers are organised throughout the year, such as day trips, tea dances and information days. The team leader makes domiciliary visits to carers who require a home visit.

A person may be referred to the service by hospital staff, social services, family members, friends and carers or you may choose to contact us personally. The service operates Monday to Friday, is free of charge and is in addition to any help that social services or other agencies may already be providing. In Newport, the Rapid Response Hospital Discharge Service supports the resettlement and reablement needs of patients being discharged from acute services for up to 14 days. As part of the Gwent Frailty Programme, referrals to the service are received via members of the Intermediate Care Team.

Looking after a loved one? You may not want any reward but that doesn’t mean that it’s not hard work! Carers deserve a rest but are often reluctant to take one. Our trained care workers can step in while you take a well earned break. Following an initial visit by a member of staff, the appropriate service is then provided by trained care workers. The service can be delivered 7 days a week, throughout the year.

Independent Professional Advocates are able to assist with confidential information and support for older people already living in or considering a move to a care home. In the Torfaen area they are also able to assist people 18+ that have a disability or sensory impairment and issues affecting them relating to a social care or housing issue.

Choices offer a range of reliable, reasonably priced, paid-for services to help older people maintain their independence in their own homes. They help with those essential tasks which can become more difficult as you get older.

Caerphilly Advocacy Appeals Service

All profits made by Choices are donated to Age Cymru Gwent so we can continue helping older people living in the Gwent area.

Independent Professional Appeals Advocates are able to assist people aged 50+ living in the Caerphilly Borough to apply for a Mandatory Reconsideration or Appeal against an adverse welfare benefit decision. They can assist with form completion, fully explain the process and attend Court with you if required when your Appeal is heard at Independent Tribunal. The Advocacy Services are free of charge and are in addition to any help that social services or other •agencies may be already providing.

Choices offers a range of services including: • domestic cleaning • gardening • shopping • assisted shopping • chaperone • dog walking • nailcutting • handyman service • Lunch clubs in the Caerphilly Borough • free fire safety checks.

Keeping mobile is really important and cutting our toe nails can be difficult. Through Choices we provide a reasonably priced, safe and accessible simple toe and hand nail cutting service available at various venues. A home visit can be arranged for an additional cost. Our foot care assistants have received foot care awareness sessions from the Aneurin Bevan Health Board Podiatry Service and follow the guidelines of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.

Robins - Hospital volunteers

Age Cymru Gwent Achievements

The Robins are hospital volunteers who undertake activities in Newport, such as hair and nail care, assisting patients at meal time, chatting and reading to patients, letter writing and assisting with phone calls. The service operates within the St. Woolos, Royal Gwent, and Nevill Hall hospitals. It is provided 7 days a week from 9.00am to 5.00pm and is free of charge.

Last year (2016 / 2017) we helped over 20,000 older people. Every pound raised is spent locally in Gwent. Service User Satisfaction marked at the highest level is consistently achieved in over 95% of responses. All domiciliary services are inspected annually by the Care & Social Services Inspectorate for Wales.

The organisation holds the Investors in People Award. Age Cymru Gwent ‘Robins’: An innovative scheme to support older people in a number of ways while they are in hospital.

Each year Age Cymru Gwent assists 20,000 older people. In order to continue our services we need your support both practically and financially.

Any donations or legacies you make to us must state Age Cymru Gwent to ensure that the money received stays in Gwent for the benefit of older people who live in Gwent.

Volunteering – Are you interested in rewarding voluntary opportunities within your local community? We offer a wide variety of volunteering activities – in our offices and in clients’ homes.

Fundraising – raise funds whilst having fun through sponsorship events or choosing us as your charity. Age UK Lottery – have a chance of winning one of a 1,000 weekly prizes whilst supporting the Charity. Donations – Any amount can be given at any time.
