Welcome to Age Cymru Pembrokeshire ............................................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................. ....................

Introduction ............................................................................................................................... .....

Age Cymru Pembrokeshire is the leading charity for older people in Pembrokeshire providing a first port of call for informing, seeking and providing information and support for older people, their carers and families. Age Cymru Pembrokeshire is a local, independent charity with over 60 years of experience initially as the Pembrokeshire Old Peoples’ Welfare Committee and then becoming the registered charity in 1992. Working from our Resource Centre at 37 Merlins Hill, Haverfordwest SA61 1PE which is open Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4pm. Tel number 01437 769972. This guide gives an overview of what we do but do not hesitate to contact us if you want more information or clarification. Age Cymru Pembrokeshire provides high quality services through both volunteers and paid staff with funding for everything we do having to be raised by ourselves locally. Each year we support over 3000 older people in Pembrokeshire, their carers and families with a range of support.

We approach each request individually and look at how we can help in a person centred manner taking into regard the skills and experience available to us through our volunteer and Home Support workforces with help based on need and not service eligibility.

Working for all Older People in Pembrokeshire ............................................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................. ....................

Each Year ............................................................................................................................... .....

• Volunteers give over 15000 hours of their time • 3000 older people receive help of which over one third are new customers • The Home Support Service provides over 4000 hours of domestic help • Over £1m worth of welfare benefits are secured for older people in Pembrokeshire • Over 500 older people receive regular care calls • Over 300 older people receive one off home visits • Over 150 older people receive home visits in the short term • Over 200 older people receive regular or ongoing home visits • Over 600 issues dealt with through low level advocacy • Over 300 people helped with welfare benefits

We cannot survive without local giving and the generosity of people who experience our help first hand or want to support our work, through donations and legacies is vital. It is only through people’s generosity that we can help older people who are lonely, vulnerable or living in poverty. This guide is funded from advertising revenue from local organisations that are featured within. We are grateful for their support but please note that their inclusion does not imply our endorsement of any particular product or service.

Working for all Older People in Pembrokeshire ............................................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................. ....................

We work in a very flexible person centred way with older people and their families to find solutions to regain and/or maintain independence, taking into account appropriateness for support from a volunteer or paid worker and whether one off, short term or ongoing support is required. Help can range from simply providing telephone numbers for relevant information to helping organise and providing quite complex ongoing support packages. Whatever you come to us for, be it support, information or volunteering, you will always receive a warm welcome.

A day in the life of Thomas Court Getting up on a Monday morning can be a drag; however this isn’t the case for staff at McCarthy & Stone’s Assisted Living development, Thomas Court in Cardiff. Thomas Court comprises 58 one and two bedroom Assisted Living apartments designed exclusively for anyone over the age of 70 requiring extra assistance in daily life. Rosemary Grimaldi, Estate Manager at Thomas Court describes her working day: “Thomas Court is a lovely environment to work in, the development is always bright and cheerful. All our staff members take pride in what they do and very rarely do we see an unhappy face. As Estate Manager a day’s work is Thomas Court

never the same. It is nice to be able to watch the homeowners ease into retirement and it’s lovely to hear them exchange experiences. Many of them take comfort in the fact that they don’t have to worry about the maintenance of their home or garden anymore.

It is a pleasure to see them getting together to socialise, it creates a real buzz in the development. Each McCarthy & Stone apartment includes 24 hour emergency call points, electrical sockets at a raised height (to reduce bending), easy grip lever taps, double glazing, energy efficient heating, a video entry system and a lift to all floors. There is also a homeowners’ lounge, guest suite and laundry room at each development.” Assisted Living apartments are also fully wheelchair accessible and benefit from level access shower and separate bath and grab rails, slip resistant vinyl flooring and an electrically operated kitchen window. There is also the benefit of an Estates Management team on-site 24 hours a day and a table service restaurant offering freshly prepared, reasonably priced meals. Furthermore, homeowners can benefit from an hour of domestic assistance each week as part of their service charge, whether that’s help with chores or getting the weekly shop in – and extra personal care assistance can be organised for those who require it, at an additional cost.

Dame Mary comments on her experience: “Ive visited 22 McCarthy & Stone developments but this is the first time I have had the opportunity to say overnight and I was extremely impressed with the quality of design and finish of the apartments.”

Dame Mary Peters CH, DBE

“The more I see of McCarthy & Stone developments, the more impressed I become. I think the Try Before you Buy scheme is a brilliant idea, what better way to decide if a McCarthy & Stone property is right for you than to stay in one with no strings attached. For me, it was like staying in a five star hotel, I’d move in anytime!” Dame Mary Peters CH, DBE

Thomas Court, Marlborough Road, Penylan, Cardiff CF23 5EZ Open Tuesday - Saturday, 10.30am - 5.00pm Please call us on 0800 201 4103 and we’ll help you find your perfect apartment or visit mccarthyandstone.co.uk
