Independent Living Support Service

....................................................................................................................................

The Independent Living Support Service is designed to help older people remain independent in their own homes by assisting with day-to-day living tasks. These tasks might include: • • • • •

Domestic cleaning Laundry, ironing and changing bedclothes Shopping Gardening and garden maintenance Dealing with correspondence

We tailor the service to your preferences and needs, and will visit you first to discuss the requirements and agree with you the tasks you would like carried out. Our coordinator will then match you to a suitable support worker who will always carry identification, visit at pre-arranged times, and carry out the tasks we have agreed with you. The temptation is often to enter into private arrangements with cleaners and gardeners, but sometimes this doesn't work out. It's unlikely you have the resources to thoroughly check someone's credentials and often you have to take the person at face value or rely on recommendations. With the Independent Living Support service from Age UK Tunbridge Wells, this is a worry you needn't face. All our staff are carefully selected, screened and vetted. They are employed by us and, if you are unhappy with any aspect of the service you receive, you can call us directly and ask the service co-ordinator to deal with the issue.

We do not offer personal care services. However, if your needs are beyond what we can provide, we will be able to assist you in finding the right support through our information and advice service. For further information or to speak to one of our members of staff about the Independent Living Support Service, please contact us using the details below. t. 01892 522591 e. ils@ageuktw.org.uk

Dementia Day Care Services ............................................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................. ....................

Our Dementia Day Care Service has now relocated to our Day care centre in Wood Street Tunbridge Wells. Most of us want our loved ones to remain independent for as long as possible, but sometimes a diagnosis of dementia makes caring for them a little harder than it used to be. Our new Dementia Day Care service combines a safe, enjoyable experience for them with an opportunity for you, the carer, to recharge your batteries for a day.

At the Day Centre we can offer people with dementia:

............................................................................................................................... .....

• Day Care from 9.30pm – 4.00pm, or for a shorter period by arrangement • A secure, peaceful environment • Activities designed to engage and stimulate • Help with personal care if required • The opportunity to socialise with others within a small group • A two-course lunch and refreshments • Signposting to other services for carers

Is it suitable for you? ............................................................................................................................... .....

Age UK Dementia Day Care service is suitable for those who are living with dementia but are able, with support, to enjoy spending time with others in a group setting. With a staff of three, there is ample opportunity to deliver activities tailored to individual needs and interests. If you feel that the person you care for might benefit from Day Care, please contact us and we will arrange to meet both of you to make sure that this is the right option for you. We might suggest that you visit the Day Centre to have a look round. Once we’ve agreed on the day or days that Day Care will be needed, we can offer your loved one a four-week trial of the service. Advocacy Service ............................................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................. ....................

Sometimes in life we need support to do things we want to do. It can be difficult to stand alone, especially in situations where you need to challenge others. Our advocacy service is designed to support you to express your wishes. This might be a simple situation, perhaps to challenge a utility bill, or may be far more complex; perhaps you are being made unhappy by those around you. Sadly, older people are sometimes written off as being too old or a bit confused and are stopped from making their own decisions. Others around them start deciding what should happen in the older person’s ‘best interests’. On occasions this can even be family members, doctors and nurses, solicitors and social workers; it’s very hard to make a stand or to disagree, especially when those around are only trying to help.

However, we all have the right to make choices in life, no matter who we are and sometimes those choices may be unconventional or seem irrational to others. Equally it is not always possible to do everything we want or have everything our own way, but if we have expressed how we feel and we have sufficient understanding of a situation it is often then far easier to compromise or accept limitations. Please get in touch if you or someone you know needs an Advocate. The support of someone on your side can make all the difference. Our advocates are not here to judge you or tell you what you should do, they are here to listen to your wishes and ensure others do too. To speak confidentially to one of our advocates, please call and ask to speak to the advocacy service. Call 01892 522591

Making Lasting Powers of Attorney vs The Alternative No one likes to think of a time when they are unable to look after their own finances and well-being, however, for many, this may become a reality.

A property and financial affairs LPA gives the attorney the power to make decisions about financial and property matters including selling a house, managing a bank account, selling and buying shares and investments.

When someone becomes unable to make decisions for themselves one way of dealing with this is for a family member, a friend or a professional Deputy to apply to the Court of Protection for what is called a Deputyship Order. In these circumstances, the court will consider the application and will appoint someone to act on behalf of the person in question as a Deputy.

A health and welfare LPA gives the attorney the power to make decisions about health and personal welfare such as day to day care, medical treatment and where someone should live.

The whole process of applying to be a Deputy can be quite lengthy with various forms to complete along with the need to provide an assessment of capacity. The assessment of capacity is completed by the donor’s doctor. All in all, as well as being a costly process, it can also take several months to complete. This may cause problems if decisions need to be made and be effected quickly, such as the sale of a property. After a Deputy has been appointed, there will be on-going supervision fees, insurance and the need for a Deputy to submit an annual report. A way of avoiding this process is for you to plan ahead and make lasting powers of attorney (LPAs). Attorneys appointed under an LPA do not have submit annual reports to the court for assessment although keeping records is advisable. No general on-going fees would be payable in the general administration of your affairs. Making LPAs also means that you are able to choose and authorise exactly who you would like to act on your behalf in making the various decisions in the event that you lose the mental capacity to make them yourself. This could save your relatives or friends the worry and potential disagreements on deciding who should apply to be a Deputy. There are two types of LPA. One deals with property and financial affairs and the other deals with health and welfare.

The costs of completing the lasting power of attorney forms and registering the documents at the Office of the Public Guardian start at ÂŁ650 plus VAT. In addition to these fees there is a Court fee of ÂŁ110 per application to register an LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian. While creating and registering LPAs may seem costly now, it is a cheaper alternative in the long term by avoiding the initial and on-going costs that are part and parcel of the Deputyship Order process.
