Local Services

....................................................................................................................................

....................................................................................................................................

Age UK North Yorkshire has been operating for over 16 years as a local registered charity and believes that everyone should have the opportunity to be able to make the most of later life, whatever their circumstances, wants and needs. We have office bases in Harrogate, Ripon, Northallerton and satellite offices at Richmond and Skipton, and we offer a range of products, services and activities aimed at promoting and improving the wellbeing of older people. We want to help older people take control, get involved and enjoy life to its full potential.

By 2030 there will be a 57% increase of over 65’s in North Yorkshire, higher than average for England; this means we need more support to carry out our work and partnership working with other agencies.

So whether you are an older person yourself, caring for an older friend or relative, a professional health or community worker or simply interested in the issues affecting the older generation, please get in touch.

Help us support older people in North Yorkshire

....................................................................................................................................

As we grow older we all face new challenges but that does not stop us from wanting a fulfilling, independent older life. So that’s why we run an Information and Advice service to help older people to find out whatever they need to know on activities, events, benefits, health and housing, in their local area. Social isolation and loneliness is a growing concern, and the large rural nature of North Yorkshire together with the closure of village shops, post offices, library service and pubs, can make it even more difficult for some people. To combat this, we offer a range of services including Befriending and Companionship, Day Activities and social opportunities, gentle exercise classes, as well as practical help, and assistance in claiming welfare benefits. We are also piloting a new HELP at HOME service - all aimed at enabling older people to stay independent and safe at home.

Five challenges facing older people in North Yorkshire and across the UK.

....................................................................................................................................

1. The population of North Yorkshire is increasing from 125,000 to 160,000 in 2021 in people aged over 65. 2. Over the next ten years and beyond with the increase in older people we will continue to see a substantial increase in the prevalence of Age related conditions, including obesity, diabetes, stroke and dementia amongst other long term conditions. 3. Research carried out by the Campaign to End Loneliness has consistently shown that 10% of older people are often or always lonely. Recent estimates place the number of people in the UK aged over 65 who are often or always lonely at over 1 million. 4. Older people in North Yorkshire have particular challenges related to the cut back in local transport and other public funded services in rural areas such as libraries and post offices. 5. More than 95% of hip fractures for older people over 65 are caused by a fall, and up to 40% of older people over 70 will fall once a year.

Cardale Financial Planning is a company of independent financial planners, which is at the heart of Cardale Asset Management, a well- respected and privately owned investment management company, based in Harrogate. Our four advisers have a combined experience of over 75 years in the industry. Sally Rollinson, (pictured below), is a Chartered Financial Planner and an accredited member of SOLLA, (Society of Later Life Advisers). Sally specialises in providing advice to older clients on such matters as finding the most efficient way to pay care fees, planning to mitigate inheritance tax, retirement options, investment advice and wealth preservation. ‘We find that many clients are concerned about funding their long term care. They are concerned about whether they will have the choice of care they would like, whether their savings will last for long enough, and whether they will be able to leave any inheritance to their loved ones. There are a number of solutions available to satisfy these concerns and it is of paramount importance that advice is sought as soon as possible from a suitably qualified professional’ We feel it is very important to work closely with your other professional advisers, such as your accountant or solicitor in order to make sure that all of your financial, legal and taxation requirements are met. We will happily visit you in your home or welcome you into our office, and would be delighted to include any family members you would like to be present at the meetings. Our initial meetings are at our expense and without obligation. Any future fees are provided to you up front and in easy to understand terms for your agreement prior to any further work being carried out.
