Lancaster Castle
Lancaster Castle is owned by Her Majesty the Queen, who is the Duke of Lancaster. As well as being a fortification, the Castle has also been the site of a crown court for more than 800 years; it was also Europe’s longest-serving operational prison until March 2011. Its courtrooms have witnessed many famous and infamous trials over the centuries, including those of the Pendle Witches who were convicted and sentenced to death in 1612.
We currently have the following areas licensed to host civil ceremonies and civil partnerships. Our venue offers a unique setting, and our friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful team will be on hand to assist you every step of the way.
The prices given do not include the fees charged by the registration service, which should be arranged directly. With regard to accessibility, only the Shire Hall is wheelchair accessible (up to a maximum of one wheelchair user). Due to Crown Court sittings we are only able to host wedding ceremonies at the weekend, but are not able to help in late July or August due to the number of visitors we have during that time.
The Shire Hall (maximum capacity 115 guests) The Shire Hall dates to 1798, and is constructed in the Neo-Gothic style; it is one of the most architecturally important and iconic rooms in the north of England. Built as a courtroom in which civil cases would be heard, it contains one of the finest displays of heraldry in the UK. The furniture was made by Gillows of Lancaster.
The price for the room hire of the Shire Hall for a ceremony is ÂŁ750.00. As the Shire Hall is still a working courtroom we are not allowed by law to publish an image of it in this brochure. Your official wedding photographer will be allowed to take photographs of your ceremony in the Shire Hall on the day of your wedding.
Hadrian’s Tower (maximum capacity 45 guests) So-called because the Victorians believed the tower to be Roman. It was actually constructed during the reign of King John in 1210, and is the second-oldest part of the castle still standing. Today is houses a number of artefacts relating to the history of law and order.
The price for the room hire of Hadrian’s Tower for a ceremony is £375.00.
The Library (maximum capacity 45 guests) Remodelled in the Georgian period, and now used as the Jury Room, this was once the site of the medieval Crown Hall, and was used as a courtroom from 1210 until 1794. It was in this space that the Lancashire Witches were tried in 1612.
The price for the room hire of the Library for a ceremony is ÂŁ375.00.
The Old Cells (maximum capacity 45 guests) Built in about 1784, these were initially used as remand cells, but were later used (until the early 20th century) as punishment cells for short periods of solitary confinement.
