System Overview HomeWorks is a versatile, powerful, and flexible integrated lighting control system for residential applications. Its unique design and its decentralized intelligence allows simultaneous remote and local operation of dimmers and switches, using attractive keypads and controls. HomeWorks provides convenient operation of all lights and devices connected to the system from any master keypad within the home. In addition, combinations of lights and devices may be assigned to individual keypad buttons, eliminating unsightly gangs of multiple wall controls for a clean, elegant look in living spaces. Master On/Off controls are also available, providing whole-house operation and security from any keypad location.

For increased functionality, HomeWorks accepts commands from home security systems, time clocks, photocells, and occupancy sensors. It can also be controlled from personal computers using a standard RS-232 port. All HomeWorks keypads and GRAFIK Eyes are ergonomically designed for easy use. This intuitive design makes it possible to learn and operate a HomeWorks system in a short time. In addition, HomeWorks’ decentralized system allows independent operation of local controls in the event the central microprocessor is not functioning.

Features Modular Concept

Programming Flexibility

HomeWorks functions as a decentralized system, allowing the local GRAFIK Eye controls to operate independently of the HomeWorks microprocessors and keypads. Lights, fans, and other devices can be added as needed, choosing from a wide selection of mains and low-voltage interfaces. Additional panels (up to eight maximum) can be added as a system grows in the design stage.

HomeWorks master keypad button functions can be programmed in three ways – to turn on and off specific lights within a room, to select predetermined lighting levels (or scenes), and to select combinations of fittings to create paths of light. Master on/off buttons offer instant access to all system lights and devices for safety and security, and master raise/lower buttons allow direct manual dimming from keypads.

Security Interface

HomeWorks can be connected to a home security system to activate lights in the event of an intrusion. The selected lights will promptly switch on to a predetermined security level, or flash repeatedly to attract attention.

Status Indicators

Keypad Buttons

Vacation/Holiday Mode

Master Off/Lower

HomeWorks constantly monitors and records your daily lighting patterns. When vacation/holiday mode operation is selected, it repeats those patterns, providing a realistic appearance of activity while you are away.

Master On/Raise

Programming Ease

Lutron’s HomeWorks Programming Utility for Windows makes it easy to program the individual keypad button functions, using any Windows 3.1- or Windows 95based computer. Individual screens prompt you through each step, and the completed program uploads directly to the HomeWorks microprocessor. Status Indicators

A quick glance at any master keypad immediately informs you which groups of lights or controllable functions are currently on or active. HomeWorks’ two-way communication system lights the appropriate LED indicator after it has verified the control function has been activated. Power Failure Memory

HomeWorks master keypads and GRAFIK Eyes are designed with power failure memory. If power is interrupted and restored, lights will automatically return to the levels they were set. Any lights turned off prior to a power outage will remain off. HomeWorks system programming is also saved if power is lost.

System Diagram A representative HomeWorks system is shown in this diagram. Touching a master keypad or handheld IR transmitter button sends a command signal to the HomeWorks microprocessor located in the remote power panel. The microprocessor responds by signalling the appropriate GRAFIK Eye and remote power module to dim or switch the desired light(s). HomeWorks microprocessor commands can also be sent by a timeclock or a security system. Windows-compatible personal computers can communicate with HomeWorks through an RS-232 port to program an entire system with easy-to-use software, or directly activate any of the system components. Lights and motors are directly controllable through remote power modules, or through GRAFIK Eye preset dimming controls. GRAFIK Eye controls will function locally even if the HomeWorks microprocessor is not functioning.

Remote Power Panel Enclosure The HomeWorks remote power panel enclosure is the basic building block of an integrated lighting control system, providing a housing for the HomeWorks microprocessor, up to eight remote power modules, an eight-output low-voltage relay card, and up to four filter chokes. The enclosure is also the terminating point for low-voltage (SELV) communications wiring of up to eight GRAFIK Eye main units and 32 master keypads. It is designed to be rough-in capable, providing direct on/off control of lighting circuits from MCBs if the microprocessor and remote power modules are to be installed at a later date.

The HomeWorks system offers two methods of controlling lighting loads. GRAFIK Eye can be programmed to control several lighting zones and are usually located in the room that they are controlling. Advanced dimming control allows the user to create the appropriate lighting scene for any activity. For installations where GRAFIK Eyes are impractical and undesireable, remote power modules can be used for direct dimming and switching of multiple fittings. Latching on/off or pulsed low-voltage control is accomplished with the relay card, which mounts adjacent to the microprocessor assembly. The remote power panel enclosure is typically mounted out of sight in a closet or electrical cabinet, and control is provided by sleek, attractive master keypads.

Microprocessor Assembly The HomeWorks microprocessor assembly is the center of a HomeWorks system. It communicates with master keypads, GRAFIK Eye preset controls, and remote power modules to operate lights, relays, motors, shades, and other remotely-controlled devices. The microprocessor assembly (HW-MA-8-240) installs in the bottom of a remote power panel enclosure and includes a mounting bracket, power supply, and wiring harness for remote power modules. A maximum of eight microprocessor assemblies can be used in a HomeWorks system, with each assembly having its own unique address.

RS-232 Port

An RS-232 port is included for two-way serial communication with a remote PC, providing an interface to/from AV equipment, security systems, HVAC systems, and automated home controls. All system programming can be saved as a file and uploaded through this port, using the Windows-based programming utility. Vacation/Holiday Mode

The HomeWorks microprocessor assembly constantly monitors and records daily lighting and device usage patterns. These patterns can be automatically repeated to simulate occupancy of the home. This mode is activated through a dry contact closure on the microprocessor assembly.

Time Clock Mode

The HomeWorks microprocessor offers a time-of-day clock memory function, capable of storing and executing up to 10 individual events per day. These could be used to automatically turn groups of lights on and off, or operate audiovisual equipment, spas, fountains, or shades.

Security Mode

Any lights and controlled devices in the system can be activated by an external security system to turn on and stay on, or flash on and off when an alarm occurs. This mode is activated through a dry contact closure on the microprocessor assembly.

How to Prepare the Control Schedule To lay out a HomeWorks integrated lighting control system, use the local control and master keypad schedule. The following steps show how to fill out a schedule for the reflected ceiling plan example shown below.

Step 1

Determine the lights and devices to be included in your system, along with how the lighting loads in each area will be controlled, using GRAFIK Eye preset dimming controls, or HomeWorks remote power modules. Number each lighting switch leg circuit on the reflected ceiling plan.

What You’ll Need:

• A reflected ceiling plan, showing all fittings, switching legs, and dimming locations. • A list of fittings to determine the connected load per switch leg. • A copy of the control schedule shown on pages 16 and 17.

Step 2

Choose master keypad locations and place them on the reflected ceiling plan.

Job Name: Location: Panel Name:

Date: Page

of

Address:

For switch legs without local controls, use this schedule to assign lighting and motor loads to remote power modules within the panel enclosure. Bus numbers 1 through 8 are used for remote power modules. HW-RPM-4U-240 remote power modules can control up to 4 zones of tungsten, inductive low-voltage, electronic low-voltage, or fluorescent lighting. Each zone has a maximum capacity of 16A @240V (3840 W/VA), and each remote power module also has a total capacity of 16A @240V (3840 W/VA). HW-RPM-4M-240 remote motor interlock modules can control four 240VAC motors with a maximum relay contact rating of 1/2 HP, 5A @240VAC inductive, 1.5A @240VAC resistive. Interface and booster types include the NGRX-PB-AU Power Booster, NGRX-FDBI-AU HiLume fluorescent dimming ballast interface, and NGRX-ELVI-AU for electronic low-voltage fittings. In rare cases, some tungsten lamps or transformers in electronic low-voltage light fittings will “buzz” or “hum.” The HW-HIFC-10-2 assembly is used to reduce hum. Indicate any loads that require filter chokes with a checkmark outside the “watts” column.

Master Keypad Layout and Design HomeWorks master keypads are installed at locations where master control of the system is desired, such as entranceways, kitchens, great rooms, master bedrooms, foyers, garages, and patios, and are typically mounted 132cm above floor level. Any button can easily be programmed to control one or more lights and devices, using Lutron’s HomeWorks Programming Utility for Windows software. Master on/off or raise/lower buttons are available on certain keypad models.

An activity button is used to activate a specific light setting or path of light, and is usually called a “scene” button. Examples of activity buttons shown include PATH HI/LOW, WELCOME, ACCENT, MORNING AND NIGHT. (Note: When creating paths of light, select common hallways and stairways only - avoid creating multiple paths which might overlap.) Common Lighting Scenes

HOME – Activates selected lights in a dark residence when returning

home at night, such as exterior lights, kitchen, and pathways.

Assigning Keypad Functions

AWAY – Turns on exterior lights and sets selected interior lights to

Simplicity and consistency work best when programming and assigning HomeWorks master keypad functions. Developing a keypad theme or structure ensures a familiar operation to keypads throughout the home, meaning that a specific button function appears in the same position on every keypad that activates that function. For layout and location purposes, keypads can be grouped into three types: Room control keypads, which activate lights or devices in a specific room and replace gangs of dimmers, point of entry keypads, located at entry/exitways of a home for control of exterior and interior lighting, and monitor keypads, used to identify lighting status at a glance. Keypad buttons function in two ways. A monitor button indicates if a light or group of lights is on or off. Examples shown include front exterior lighting (FR EXT), rear exterior lighting (R EXT) and foyer (FOYER) buttons.

preset levels when leaving home to return after dark. PATH HI – Illuminates hallways to a bright setting for early evening PATH LOW – Illuminates hallways to a dim setting for late night use. EXTERIOR – Conveniently turns on/off all exterior lights without the

need to walk to every entry point. MASTER ON – Turns all lights on. MASTER OFF – Turns all lights off. NIGHT LIGHT – Turns off all lights except hallways, which remain at

dimmed levels for children and guests. TIMECLOCK – Activates/deactivates timeclock mode. VACATION/HOLIDAY – Activates/deactivates vacation/holiday mode. ENTERTAIN – Raises house lighting to bright levels for entertaining.

PANIC – Activates security lighting.

HomeWorks Programming Utility In addition to simple manual keypad programming, HomeWorks systems can be configured with Lutron’s HomeWorks Programming Utility for either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. A series of easy-to-use screens prompts the user to define the system components and program master keypad button functions. Diagnostic features are also included to help installers troubleshoot and fine-tune systems. The Output Device Definition screen is where each device is defined, along with panel addreses, and circuit number and switchbox number information. Individual button functions are assigned on the Button Programming screen. The keypad being programmed appears as a large icon, and the function names selected are shown under each button. Preset dimming information is also displayed on this screen. After programming is complete, the system configuration is uploaded to the system through a computer’s RS-232 serial port. The Display Devices screen is used during initial installation and programming to verify system equipment is functioning properly. If installed on the homeowner’s computer, it can also be used to control individual lights throughout the house. Minimum requirements to run the HomeWorks Programming Utility are an 80386DX/25 Mhz or faster Windows PC with four megabytes of RAM, four megabytes of hard disk space, and DB-9 serial port connection. eight megabytes of RAM is recommended for faster operation. Refer to publication No. 043-012 for more details on using the HomeWorks Programming Utility.
