System Overview Overview
Optional Sensor/Control Inputs
The RadioTouch system provides the ability to control your visual environment from any location in a space. The RadioTouch controller controls your Lutron fluorescent dimming ballasts directly and interfaces simply with other load types, Sivoia QED controllable window treatments, AC motorized projection screens and window treatments, and other A/V equipment. The RadioTouch switchpack controller is able to switch 16 A of high inrush loads. One RadioTouch controller is required for each zone of lighting.
Controller Models Models with no suffix can operate at 120 V or 277 V . Models with a -347 suffix operate at 347 V . RTA-RX-F and RTA-RX-F-347 The RTA-RX-F can control one zone of dimmable lighting and accept inputs from wallbox transmitters, tabletop transmitters, interface transmitters, occupant sensors, and daylight sensors. RTA-RX-F-SC and RTA-RX-F-SC-347 The RTA-RX-F-SC has the same capabilities as the RTA-RX-F with the addition of low-voltage contact closure outputs, which allow control of AC motorized window treatments, AC motorized projection screens, and Sivoia QED controllable window treatments through an interface. RTA-RX-SW and RTA-RX-SW-347 (Switchpack) The RTA-RX-SW can switch one 16 A high inrush lighting circuit and accept inputs from wallbox transmitters, tabletop transmitters, interface transmitters, and occupant sensors.
R
• Wallbox and Tabletop Transmitters: Transmitters allow the user to dim the lights from full to minimum, set and access preset light levels (if addressed to a dimmable controller), and turn the lights On or Off. Transmitters must be located within 35 feet of the controller. Some models may also be used to control motorized accessories, depending on model number. Multi-location control is achieved by adding more transmitters and addressing them to the controller. Up to 16 transmitter zones can be addressed to a controller. Tabletop transmitters are battery powered. • Interface Transmitters: The RTA-RS232 interface transmitter provides an interface to third-party RS232 devices. The RTA-SCI interface transmitter provides an input interface to the system from any equipment that generates momentary dry contact closures. For more information, see the applicable installation guides. • Occupant Sensor: The occupant sensor supplies a signal to the controller any time the space is occupied. This signal tells the lights controlled by the RadioTouch controller to turn on. An unoccupied signal tells the RadioTouch controller to turn lights off or go to a minimum level. • Daylight Sensor: The daylight sensor supplies a signal to a dimmable controller indicating the ambient light level. When enabled for use with a daylight sensor, the controller will adjust lighting levels to a user-defined setting. • Burn-in (100%/100 Hr): This button on the controller activates a 100-hour lamp maximum light level to season the lamps and ensure long fluorescent lamp life. The controller STAT LED is On when activated, and the RadioTouch controller will automatically remove itself from burn-in after the 100-hour period. During the burn-in period, the wallbox, tabletop, and interface transmitters will only turn the lights On and Off. All other lighting functions are ignored. The 100 hours are counted only while the lights are turned to full On. The 100hour counter is cancelled if the controller is manually removed from this mode by pressing the burn-in button again or if the power to that controller is removed. (Note: Not applicable to the switchpack models.)

Dimmable Zone Controllers: Load Interfaces Wiring in Bypass with a Load Interface
Danger! Locate and lock the supply breaker in the Off position, or remove the supply fuse before continuing.
Wiring in bypass is a temporary wiring scheme to test the interface wiring without a control. If there is a wiring problem or a short in the circuit, this will prevent damage to the RadioTouch controller. Make the appropriate wire connections for your ballast type using the wiring diagrams below.
Caution! The FDI-FTU-16A-120, FDI-ELV-1000, and FDI-INC-2000 operate on 120 V only.
Note: Lamp wires not shown but must be in place and correct for bypass testing.
Lutron Tu-Wire Dimming Ballast Interface (wired in bypass)

Troubleshooting note: If a daylight sensor does not seem to be responding to changes in light, the RadioTouch controller for that zone may be in burn-in mode; if so, the controller status LED will be On continuously. Allow the lights to run for 100 hours at full intensity and then verify functionality. (The RadioTouch controller will automatically come out of burn-in mode after 100 hours.) If the daylight sensor still does not seem to be responding to changes in light, the RadioTouch controller may not be calibrated properly. Please follow the instructions below carefully to properly calibrate the controller for daylight sensing.

Set the Daylight Sensor for the Space This step must be performed for the daylight sensor and RadioTouch controller to be calibrated properly. Make this adjustment when there is some available daylight, but not enough to achieve the desired light level alone, such as on an overcast day, in the early morning, or in the late afternoon of a sunny day. (See next page.) Note: Be sure the RadioTouch controller is not in burn-in or emergency mode. Adjust the daylight sensor with a wallbox or tabletop transmitter column of buttons that independently control the lighting zone with the daylight sensor. Step A: For a 5-button wallbox or tabletop transmitter, press and hold buttons 2 and 4 for 5 seconds. For a 2-button wallbox transmitter, press and hold the On and Off buttons for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, the lights addressed to the transmitter being operated will flash and settle at high end.
22

OFF
Step B: Use the raise and lower buttons to adjust the lights in the area controlled by the daylight sensor to the desired level. Step C: Press and hold the same 2 buttons from step A for 5 seconds to lock in the setting. The lights will flash, then return to the light level set in step B. Note: Preset light levels may be affected by the daylight sensor input. As ambient light increases/ decreases, the preset light levels will scale down accordingly (between the actual preset level and low end) to attempt to maintain the space’s luminosity (as set in step B).

AC Motorized Devices Configure the Motor Direction for Open/Close or Up/Down For each channel of the unit, the motor’s direction of rotation needs to be configured for the Open/Close or Up/Down functions so that the AC motor will move in the proper direction. This is accomplished using option switches 1 through 4. This step needs to be performed whether each channel is controlled individually or all channels are controlled together.
R
Set option switch 5 to Off

ON
1.Restore power to unit. Once the appropriate line voltage and motor connections have been made to the unit, replace the cover on the line voltage wiring compartment. Remove the cover from the PELV (Class 2: USA) wiring compartment. Turn power back On. 2.Determine AC motor position. Determine whether the AC motor that is controlled by channel 1 is open or closed (up or down). If it is open (up), press the Close 1 manual override button. If it is closed (down), press the Open 1 manual override button. If the AC motor moves to the desired position, the channel is configured properly; proceed to step 4. If the AC motor does not move to the desired position, proceed to step 3. 3.Verify motor movement. If the AC motor did not move to the desired position in step 2, slide option switch 1 to the opposite position. Press the same button again that was pressed in step 2 (Open or Close). If the AC motor moves to the desired position, channel 1 is now configured properly. 4.Repeat for remaining motors. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the rest of the channels that are connected to AC motors. Option switch 2 configures channel 2; option switches 3 and 4 (WC-4M-GC only) configure channels 3 and 4. 5.Configure contact closure input type. Make sure option switch 5 is in the Off (Down) position.

GRAFIK Eye Interface Wire the RadioTouch Controller for use with a GRAFIK Eye® System (RTA-RX-F-SC only) The RadioTouch lighting system can be used to control a GRAFIK Eye system using either the GRX-AV or the OMX-AV contact closure interface, in conjunction with the RadioTouch switch closure controller (RTA-RX-F-SC) and the appropriate RadioTouch tabletop transmitter. This application provides radio frequency remote control of a GRAFIK Eye system rather than infrared control from the GRAFIK Eye system itself.
The RadioTouch tabletop transmitter is available in different configurations. The tabletop transmitter shown below is an example of a 4-Scene plus Off transmitter (model# RTA-TX-C5). Tabletop transmitters that provide 8 scenes plus Off and 12 scenes plus Off are also available. Refer to the RadioTouch Design Guide for Wireless Lighting Control (P/N 048-169) to see all available transmitter models. Contact Lutron Customer Service if a different model is required. Note: See GRAFIK Eye Interface instructions for proper interface setup and configuration.
A single RadioTouch tabletop transmitter can be used to activate up to 12 scenes in a GRAFIK Eye system via momentary dry contact closures on both the GRAFIK Eye system interface and the RadioTouch controller. The switch closure outputs from the RTA-RXF-SC wire directly to a GRX-AV or OMX-AV to activate four scenes and Off on the GRAFIK Eye control unit or GRAFIK Eye system control processor. Multiple interfaces and controllers can be used to access up to 12 scenes and Off from a single tabletop transmitter. The RadioTouch tabletop transmitter must be within 35 feet of the RTA-RX-F-SC.

Advanced Programming Adjust Preset Levels The preset light or shade levels for each controller can be adjusted to meet the needs of the space. When the preset levels of a controller are adjusted, all preset transmitters that are addressed to the controller will activate the new levels. On a switching unit (RTA-RX-SW, RTA-RX-SW-347), the presets are restricted to On and Off. There are two methods to adjust the preset levels: Remote, using either the RTA-WX-5B or a tabletop transmitter; or using DIP switch 1 on the RadioTouch controller. Note: The controller will not react to preset button presses from a transmitter while the controller’s DIP switch 1 is in the down position, or while the controller is in preset adjust mode. Preset light levels may be affected by daylight sensor input. As ambient light increases or decreases the preset light levels will scale accordingly. Step A: Remote Method Press and hold the top and lower buttons for 5 seconds. The lights will flash to notify you that you are in Preset Adjust Mode, and settle at 100% light level. If no lights are being controlled by this controller, you will not get visual feedback.
Step B: Using the raise/lower buttons on the wall control or in the column controlling the controller that you are adjusting, set the lights at the new preset level. Step C: Press and hold the button that you would like to set to the current light level for 5 seconds. The lights will flash to notify you that the preset has changed. Step D: Repeat Steps B and C for other presets that need to be adjusted. Step E: Remote Method Press and hold the top and lower buttons for 5 seconds to exit Preset Adjust mode. The lights will flash and return to their maximum light level. If no lights are being controlled by this controller, you will not get visual feedback. Test the new preset buttons to make sure the preset levels are set correctly. If not, repeat steps A through E. DIP Switch Method Flip DIP switch 1 back up to exit Preset Adjust mode. (If a daylight sensor is connected the first preset command may cause the lights to move quickly to their daylight sensor adjusted light level.)
DIP Switch Method Flip DIP switch 1 down on the controller. After the switch is flipped the controller will be in Preset Adjust Mode. (If a daylight sensor is connected to this controller your lights may change level when DIP switch 1 is flipped.)

Troubleshooting Guide Symptom
Possible Cause(s)
Lights are always Off—there is no glow • Power is Off. at the lamp ends, and no flashing. • System is miswired. • Wrong line voltage was applied. • No dimmed hot signal. • Fixture has instant start sockets.
Lights are always Off (or locked at low end), but there is a glow at the end of the lamp.
• Wrong lamp type for the ballast installed. • System is miswired.
• Poor or no connection to sockets or lamp pins. • Lamps are too far from a grounded surface.
Lights always stay On full with little or no dimming.
• System is miswired.
• Magnetic dimming ballasts connected on the same switch leg. • Emergency DIP switch is in the down position and closure is not present. • 100-hour burn-in activation is enabled.
• Transmitters are not addressed to the receiver.
Lights go to full, but not all the way to minimum.
• Ballasts are not properly grounded.
• FDB/ECO mode DIP switch is in the wrong position. • Wrong lamp type for the ballast installed. • Lamps are too old.
Preset buttons do not function.
• DIP switch 1 is in the down position. • Daylight sensor is flooded with ambient light.
Controller does not respond to a transmitter.
• Transmitter has not been added to the controller. • Transmitter does not have power.
R
Solution(s) Verify breaker is On. Check system wiring, connection of socket wires. Check system voltage vs. ballast rating. Check system wiring, measure voltages; see Voltage Map attached. Change sockets to rapid start sockets.
Verify ballast lamp type matches lamp. Check for proper ballast-to-socket wiring—particularly the yellow and/or blue with white stripe wires. These wires must be wired in parallel to two lamps (in one side, out the same side to the next lamp), not in series. Check for proper connection of wires to the sockets and lamp pins to sockets. Check for proper grounding of the fixture, and proper space between the ground plane and the lamp’s entire length; must be 1/2 +/- 1/4 in. (13 mm +/- 6 mm).
Check that the dimmed hot signal is present as shown on the voltage map attached. Check for dimmed hot and hot swapped. Remove the magnetic dimming ballast(s) from the circuit. Check Emergency DIP switch and terminals 2 and 6 for wires to an Emergency On closure. Check to see if the 100-hour burn-in feature is activated indicated by the function indicator LED being On. Repeat steps to address the transmitters to the receiver (see pages 15 and 18).
Check that the fixture is properly grounded and that a ground plane is 1/2 +/- 1/4 in. (13 mm +/- 6 mm) away from the lamp’s entire length. Flip FDB/ECO mode DIP switch to the correct position to match the ballast type. Verify ballast lamp type matches lamp. Relamp the entire fixture.
Make sure DIP switch 1 on the controller is in the up position. Recalibrate the daylight sensor or reduce the ambient light entering the room.
Address the transmitter to the controller (see pages 15 and 18). Check that the tabletop transmitter batteries are installed correctly. Check that the wallbox transmitter is being powered with line voltage.

Troubleshooting Guide Symptom
Possible Cause(s)
Solution(s)
Lights connected to an FDI are always Off or at low end.
• System is miswired.
Check system wiring.
Lights flicker or drop out at low end.
• Lamps were not kept at full intensity for 100-hour burn-in before dimming. • Defective or damaged lamps.
Keep the lamps at full intensity for 100-hour burn-in.
• Lamps are too close to a grounded surface. • Low end too low on controller.
Replace with new lamps or exchange lamps from a known good fixture. Check that the ground plane is 1/2 +/- 1/4 in. (13 mm +/- 6 mm) away from the lamp’s entire length. Make sure DIP switch 3 on controller is in the up position.
Transmitter controls the wrong set of lights/shades/closures.
• Transmitters were addressed to the wrong controllers.
Delete the transmitters from the controller that is responding to that transmitter. Add transmitters to correct controller.
Transmitter cannot be added to a controller.
• Transmitter does not have power.
Check that the tabletop transmitter batteries are installed correctly. Check that the wallbox transmitter is being powered with line voltage. Delete all transmitters from the controller and start the addressing over (16 transmitters/controller).
• System limit reached.
Transmitters are controlling more lights • Multiple controllers were in program mode during system addressing. than you intended.
Black lamp ends or premature lamp failure.
• Poor connections. • Ballast to socket wires too long.
• Lamps were not kept at full intensity for 100 hours before dimming. • Lamps are not properly seated in the sockets.
Lights are flashing or strobing.
42
• Wrong lamp type or voltage for ballast installed. • System is miswired.
RadioTouchTM Installation Guide
Delete all transmitters from the controllers that are responding and start the addressing over.
Check for proper connection of wires to the sockets and lamp pins to sockets. Shorten the amount of wire between the ballast and the sockets—maximum total length is 7 feet (2 m); 3 feet (1 m) for compact fluorescent. This is especially critical on the yellow and the blue with white stripe wires since the length of the wires between sockets is part of the total length. Relamp the entire fixture and leave them at full intensity for 100 hours before dimming. Check the wire-to-socket and socket-to-lamp pin connections.
Verify the ballast’s lamp type and voltage are correct. Check for hot and dimmed hot swapped, or check for correct socket wiring.
R
Troubleshooting Guide (continued) Symptom
Possible Cause(s)
Lamps are not at the same light level.
• Ballast to socket wires different lengths.
• Distance from the lamp to a grounded surface is different.
• Mixture of lamp ages or manufacturers.
Ballasts buzz or hum.
• System miswired. • Wrong lamp type for ballast installed. • Insecurely mounted ballast.
R
Solution(s) Different lengths will cause imbalance; for instance, 3 feet (1 m) of red wire and 6 feet (1.8 m) of blue wire will cause an imbalance. Add or remove wire as necessary—but do not exceed 7-foot (2 m) total limit. Check that the grounded metal is 1/2 +/- 1/4 in. (13 mm +/- 6 mm) away from the lamp’s entire length. All lamps in a fixture should have the same distance in order to have the same intensity. Check that all the lamps are the same exact type—both manufacturer and color.
Check for interchanged hot, dimmed hot, and neutral wires. Verify the ballast lamp type and voltage are correct. Tighten the mounting screws after checking for foreign material behind the ballast.

Ballast Installation Best Practices Lutron recommends the following procedures when installing or replacing Lutron dimming ballasts as a part of a Lutron lighting system. Lutron ballasts are lamp-specific and voltage-specific. Make sure the ballast model is compatible with the lamp type, wattage, and line voltage of your installation. Using the wrong line voltage can damage the ballast.
Wiring Always check the wiring schematic on the ballast label for the proper method of wiring that specific model.
Wiring schematic
Yellow (common) wires must be wired to the ballasts in parallel, not in series. Ensure socket wires are not pinched or shorted to ground.
Correct Wired in parallel Yellow (and/or blue/white) wires where applicable
Incorrect Wired in series
Socket Information Lutron ballasts require rapid start sockets. Lutron recommends IEC-rated sockets. For more information, refer to Lutron Application Note 122, available by clicking Technical Info, Application Notes at www.lutron.com. Caution! Using instant start sockets can damage the ballasts.
Rapid Start
Instant Start (do not use)
Size and mount the socket appropriately to provide proper distance to the grounded metal surface of the fixture. In addition, linear and compact lamps must never touch any metal part of a fixture. Lamp socket (side view)

Ballast Installation Best Practices (continued) Ballast Mounting Guidelines Mount flat on metal fixture so that there are no air gaps between the ballast and the metal fixture. Refer to the ballast label for the maximum allowable calibration point temperature and ensure that your installation complies. Ground the ballast to the metal fixture chassis. Lutron recommends inserting a star washer at each end when screwing the ends of the ballast to the metal fixture. Mount entire length of ballast flush to fixture
Socket Lead Length Requirements
Avoid screws, knockouts, dimples, or any features that raise ballast off fixture even slightlyMounting on fixture cover is not recommended because it can impede the ground connection and/or cause heat from the lamps to be induced into the ballast.

Lamp Type
T-5 Linear T-8 Linear and U-Tube
Max. Length of Leads (ballast to socket) 3 ft. (0.9 m)
7 ft. (2.1 m)
Socket Wiring Use #18 AWG (0.75 mm2) solid or tinned stranded wire. Refer to ballast label and socket manufacturer for proper strip length.
Installation Avoid installations with cold air blowing directly on lamps; Lutron ballasts are designed to operate the lamps when the lamp temperature is at a minimum of 50 °F (10 °C). See lamp manufacturer’s specifications for maximum lamp temperatures.
Emergency Ballasts Lutron does not manufacture emergency ballasts, nor does it guarantee the performance of Lutron ballasts and other equipment when emergency ballasts are wired in association with a Lutron ballast.
Compatibility Lutron guarantees the performance of our ballasts only when used with Lutron controls. We design and manufacture our dimming ballasts to operate exclusively with Lutron controls. We cannot guarantee the performance of our ballasts when operated by controls from other manufacturers.
Burn-In NEMA recommends a 12-hour burn-in period for new fluorescent lamps before dimming. Consult the lamp manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations. For additional details, see the Ballast Technical Reference Guide at www.lutron.com.
