OFF OFF OFF
• Turn the power OFF at the circuit breaker (or remove the fuse). ON
Note: To avoid overheating and possible damage to other equipment, do not use to control receptacles or transformer-supplied appliances. Install in accordance with all national and local electrical codes. The Electronic Switch (VT-S6AM) requires a neutral wire for operation. If no neutral wire is present, contact a licensed electrician for installation. A neutral wire is not necessary for the installation of the Accessory Switch (VT-AS). When “no grounding means” exists within the wallbox, then the NEC® 2005, Article 404-9 allows a switch without a grounding connection to be installed as a replacement, as long as a plastic, noncombustible wallplate is used. For this type of installation, cap or remove the green ground wire from the switch and use an appropriate wallplate such as a ViertiTM series wallplate by Lutron®. Do not paint the Electronic Switches or Companion Switches. Electronic Switches are not compatible with standard 3-way switches. Use only with Companion Switches (VT-AS). Companion Switches (VT-AS) cannot be used individually but must be used in conjunction with an Electronic Switch in a 3-way/4-way application. In any 3-way/4-way circuit, use only one Electronic Switch with up to four Companion Switches (VT-AS). Do not use where total load is greater than the rating indicated in the Derating Chart below. Operate between 32 °F (0 °C) and 104 °F (40 °C). The Electronic Switch may feel warm to the touch during normal operation. Recommended wallbox depth is 2.5 in (64 mm) minimum. When controlling a combined fan and light load, the total load may not exceed 3 A. Maximum wire length between the Electronic Switch and the last Companion Switch is 75 ft. (23 m) For new installations, install a test switch before installing the Electronic Switch or test with a breaker.

Two switches controlling a light fixture: Both will be 3-way switches. Each switch will have insulated wires connected to three screws plus a bare copper or green insulated wire to a green ground screw. One of these wires is connected to a screw of a different color (not green) or labeled COMMON. Tag this wire on both switches to identify when rewiring.
3c - Three or More-Location Control Note: Screw placement may be different on your switch. Same colored screw (or marked IN or OUT)

Three or more switches controlling a light fixture: Two will be 3-way switches and any others will be 4-way switches. Tag the wires of the two 3-way switches as in the Two-Location Control above. The 4-way switch will have insulated wires connected to four screws plus a bare copper or green insulated wire to a green ground screw. Tag two insulated wires that are connected to different color (not green) screws. Follow this procedure for each 4-way switch.

Disconnecting Switch Wires
Important Note: Your wall switch may have two wires attached to the same screw (see illustrations below for examples). Tape these two wires together before disconnecting. When rewiring, connect wires to the Electronic Switch the same way they were connected to the removed switch. One wire in the backwired hole and one to the screw.
One continuous wire to the screw.
Wiring the Electronic Switch
Important Wiring Information When making wire connections, follow the recommended strip lengths and combinations for the supplied wire connector. Note: All wire connectors provided are suitable for copper wires only. For aluminum wires, consult an electrician. Trim or strip wallbox wires to the length indicated by the strip gauge on the back of the switch.
Wire Connector: Use to join #14 AWG or #12 AWG ground wire to #18 AWG ground wire.
Tape together
Push-in Terminals: Insert wires fully. Note: Push-in terminals are for use with #14 AWG solid copper wires only. DO NOT use stranded or twisted wires.
Twist wire connector tight.
or Screw Terminals: Tighten securely. Screw terminals are for use with #12 AWG or #14 AWG solid copper wires only. DO NOT use stranded or twisted wires.
Tape together Screw Terminals: Turn screws to loosen.
Push-in Terminals: Insert screwdriver. Pull wire out.
Looped Wire: Turn screw to loosen.

Wiring the Electronic Switch: • Tighten the blue screw terminal on the Electronic Switch. The blue screw is not used in a single-pole circuit. • Connect the green ground wire on the Electronic Switch to the bare copper or green ground wire in the wallbox. (See Important Note 4.) • Connect the neutral wire in the wallbox to the silver screw terminal on the Electronic Switch. If a neutral wire is not available in the wallbox, contact a licensed electrician for installation. • Connect the live wire (the wire leading to the circuit breaker or fusebox), disconnected from the removed switch, to the black screw terminal on the Electronic Switch. • Connect the remaining wire, disconnected from the removed switch, to the brass screw terminal on the Electronic Switch.

Troubleshooting Symptom
Possible Cause
The light does not turn ON and no LEDs turn ON.
• The FASS switch on the Electronic Switch or Companion Switch(es) is pulled down to the OFF position. • The circuit breaker is OFF or tripped. • The neutral wire is not connected. • The wires connected to the black and brass screws of the Electronic Switch are reversed.
The light turns ON and the Electronic Switch works, but the Companion Switch does not work.
• The wire connected to the blue screw terminal on the Electronic Switch is not the same wire connected to the blue screw terminal on the Companion Switch. The Electronic Switch is wired on the line-side; move the Electronic Switch to the load-side.
LEDs scroll up and down.
• The Electronic Switch/Companion Switch has encountered an error condition. Call Lutron Technical Support.
