You’ll get a taste of the gym, the pre-fight rituals and feel something of the excitement the fighter experiences before a match. Adults £18, children £9, children under five go free. ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE AND FESTIVAL

10 March–16 April youngvic.org

13 March visitlondon.com

Half gig, half theatre show, Jane Horrocks is the star of this celebration of the post-punk music of her adolescence at the Young Vic Theatre. She performs with a live band and a company of dancers, bringing to life the disillusionment and messy relationships that were the hallmarks of the 1970s and 1980s music scene in the UK. Conceived by Horrocks herself, along with director and choreographer Aletta Collins, this is a world premiere of a show that looks set to be a big hit with music lovers and theatregoers alike. Performances Monday–Saturday at 8pm (except 25 and 28 March), Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 3pm (except 12, 16 March, 6 and 13 April). Tickets £10–£35.

London’s Irish community knows how to have a party and everyone’s invited to Trafalgar Square this month to help them celebrate their patron saint. The parade will feature pageantry, floats and a marching band, and there will also be a festival featuring comedy, film, entertainment and plenty of live Irish music and dancing. The parade usually makes its way down Piccadilly, on a 1.5-mile route passing some of London’s most iconic landmarks including The Ritz, Piccadilly Circus, and Trafalgar Square and on to Whitehall. Free event, starts at 12 noon.

Curated by the iconic British photographer Martin Parr, this show in the Barbican Art Gallery looks at how international photographers from the 1930s to the present day have captured the social, cultural and political identity of the UK through the camera lens. From social documentary and street photography, to portraiture and architectural photography, the exhibition celebrates the work of leading photographers including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Rineke Dijkstra, Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand. Open Saturday–Wednesday 10am–6pm, Thursday and Friday 10am–9pm. Tickets £12, concessions £10. Call 0845 120 7550.

Following critical acclaim at the Savoy Theatre, the Chichester Festival Theatre revival of Frank Loesser’s classic musical opens at the Phoenix Theatre on Charing Cross Road this month. Based on the colourful stories of American journalist Damon Runyon and set in post-World War Two America, it tells the tale of a group of gamblers, hustlers and nightclub singers – as well as a strait-laced missionary by the name of Sarah Brown – and features hits like Luck Be A Lady and Sit Down You’re Rockin’ The Boat. To book, call ATG on 0844 871 7687 or visit atgtickets.com. Tickets from £27.

The World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour is a chance for everyone to show they care about our brilliant planet and is your first step to helping to protect its future. Lots of famous landmarks across London are taking part, including Big Ben, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace. This year, the WWF are looking to achieve the UK’s largest simultaneous candlelit dinner party, with swanky restaurants such as The Savoy, River Cottage and OXO Tower Restaurant all taking part – and they’re encouraging people to hold their own candlelit dinners at home, too. Simply sign up at earthhour.wwf.org.uk and switch off your lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. The Food Made Good campaign is a great place to visit for information about hosting a dinner party – find them at foodmadegood.org.

CELEBRATING CHARLOTTE BRONTË: 1816 –1855 npg.org.uk

MUSIC

GLEN HANSARD

reallyusefultheatres.co.uk/our-theatres/london-palladium

The much-loved Irish singer-songwriter plays the London Palladium on Wednesday 16 March as part of a spring tour. It follows his second solo album Didn’t He Ramble. ✻ Tickets £22.50–£35. ✻ Call the box office on 0844 412 4655.

A major display of personal items, original manuscripts and works of art to mark the bicentenary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth. The exhibition explores the life of the author of Jane Eyre, her creative development and professional success. It includes portraits from the Gallery’s Collection and 26 items from the Brontë Parsonage Museum, birthplace and home of Charlotte and her family. It will also be one of the museum’s largest ever loans, some of which have never previously been seen. Among the treasures are paintings and drawings by

Charlotte, letters and journals, the famous ‘little books’ create by the Brontë sisters as children and first editions of Jane Eyre, her first published novel. Central to the display is the presentation of new research into the only surviving painted portraits of Charlotte with her two sisters, Emily and Anne, by their brother Branwell; also the chalk drawing of Charlotte by George Richmond.

✻ Until 14 August 2016. ✻ Room 24, National Portrait Gallery. ✻ Admission free. exclusivemagazines.co.uk 23

BOB DYLAN snapgalleries.com/oyp

Photographer Ken Regan followed the iconic Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1975, and was granted total access to Bob Dylan and friends who were around at that time, including Patti Smith (left). This limited-edition, ultralarge format book has just 750 individually numbered copies available. Costs £295.

The National Theatre’s sell-out play arrives in the West End this month for a 12-week run. Emma was having the time of her life. Now she’s in rehab. Her first step is to admit that she has a problem. But the problem isn’t with Emma, it’s with everything else. She needs to tell the truth. But she’s smart enough to know that there’s no such thing. When intoxication feels like the only way to survive the modern world, how can she ever sober up?

Unexplained pelvic pain? Pelvic Congestion Syndrome is a major cause Irritable bowel, irritable bladder, discomfort on sexual intercourse or a ‘dragging’ feeling deep in the pelvis on standing? Then you may have Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS).

AWARD WINNING RESEARCH

*

PCS is a condition caused by swollen veins in the pelvis. It can be thought of as varicose veins inside the pelvis and the condition is easily misdiagnosed.

One simple scan can quickly and easily detect the PCS condition and accurately

identify the underlying vascular issues causing the problems. As with all of The Whiteley Clinic varicose vein treatments, Pelvic Congestion Syndrome can be treated with a sophisticated but straightforward walk in walk out procedure under local anaesthetic. Free online screening for PCS is now available on our website. Please visit www.thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk/ self-assessment Fixed price packages now available.

If you would like to make an appointment or request further information please call one of our clinics:

FRESH AIR SKINCARE

With anti-pollution skincare set to be the next big thing, Marks & Spencer have launched their new Filorga Scrub & Mask, £38. It’s the first mask that combines exfoliation with reoxygenation in two steps. Start by massaging it on to clean skin to whisk away dead skin cells and surface grime; then leave it to settle on your skin as it transforms into a mousse, before rinsing it away.

ALL ABOUT OILS

We’ve long been advocates of the nourishing and conditioning properties of oils for face and body, but did you know how useful they can be when it comes to your hair? In the past, many users found oil-based products just too, well… oily, leaving their hair looking in need of a wash rather than supershiny. However, the new breed of oil-based serums and conditioners are a completely different affair. Our current favourite is Oway Glossy Nectar, £15 for 50ml; a silky oil that gives a highdefi nition gleam to styled hair – a few drops is all you need. Find it at selected salons and online at oway.co.uk

marksandspencer.com

L’AIR DE RIEN Actress and style icon Jane Birkin has only ever made two brand collaborations – the famous Hermès ‘Birkin’ bag and this gorgeous fragrance with London-based perfumer Miller Harris. Her bespoke scent first appeared back in 2006, but this year, it’s been relaunched in a new bottle illustrated by Birkin herself. ‘L’Air de Rien’ means ‘nonchalantly’ in English, and the super-cool fragrance itself is a subtle blend of amber, vanilla, neroli, oak moss and a musk reminiscent of the leather-bound books in her Parisian home. £65 for 50ml, £95 for 100ml. millerharris.com

IN THE PINK

Colour experts Pantone have declared ‘Rose Quartz’ as THE colour of 2016. Show you’ve got your finger on the beauty pulse by slicking on a coat or two of pale polish. It’s a shade that works as well on short, beautifully manicured nails as on long ones. We love Guerlain Colour Lacquer in Baby Rose, £19. harrods.com

STEP INTO HISTORY Jane Moran’s family cottage in Sussex is not only a masterclass in simple, rustic design, it’s a treasure chest of memories spanning the generations

ane Moran’s mother moved into a small, isolated cottage on the edge of a wooded common in Sussex, with no driving licence, a daughter at boarding school and a husband in a sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis. ‘I think my father was expecting her to find some nice, convenient little townhouse near where he was staying, but my mother walked through the door of this cottage and immediately felt at home. They had been living in India, where my father was a tea planter, and had arrived back in England with nothing,’ Jane says. ‘The cottage was for sale fully furnished right down to the washing-up bowl, because the owner was a writer who lived in Spain.’ Jane’s mother stayed in the cottage she loved for the rest of her life. After she died, Jane’s father stayed on. ‘He was tall and the ceilings are terribly low, and I think he rather longed to pull it down and build a bungalow,’ she says, smiling. ‘But he didn’t. It became completely shambolic, and he filled the field with old cars, scattered the place with bits of useful wire and batteries, and kept chickens in a battered Bentley.’ Jane evokes a delightfully eccentric picture of her father in later years – a white-haired old man, ‘wild and handsome’, wearing customised clothes including cut-off trousers with hand-sewn elastic around the bottom of the legs for playing golf. In 1991, he moved out and Jane and her husband, Tom Eden, and their two children, Maud, aged 10, and William, aged seven,

plus a temporarily homeless friend, a large dog and two cats all moved in. ‘So there we were,’ says Jane, ‘in this tiny, tiny cottage, with two bedrooms upstairs and three rooms downstairs.’ Many things have changed since those early days. The cottage has almost doubled in size with an extension containing a large kitchen downstairs and a third bedroom upstairs. The cottages next door have been smartened up and are now occupied, and the gypsies, who used to camp close by, making birch brooms and gathering moss to sell at the flower market, and holly and mistletoe for Christmas, have left the common to settle in the village. ‘I think it still has the same atmosphere,’ Jane comments thoughtfully. ‘It may not be beautiful, but it is very, very welcoming and warm, which is probably why we have never left. A good friend of mine says it feels like a holiday house because the doors are always open and you never have to worry about treading mud on pristine carpet or breaking something.’ Jane is right about the atmosphere, but not about the beauty. The first room you enter seems to glow, with buttercup-yellow walls, a pair of spoon-back hall chairs painted a rich orange and two contemporary paintings on the wall, one with a background the same colour as the chairs, the other vibrant with emerald greens, purple and yellow. A chest of drawers is draped with a piece of old chintz dotted with orange flowers and there is a brightly coloured tin trunk sitting on top. The effect is like stepping into a tropical garden. When Jane’s mother lived here, this room was the kitchen. With the luxury of extra space, it has become the entrance hall, from which rises a wooden staircase as steep as a stepladder, leaving just enough space beneath for a ship’s piano, which has one octave less than a normal piano. As an introduction, this room encapsulates all that makes the cottage so attractive. The modern paintings are by friends and reflect

Jane’s interest in contemporary art and her work running educational workshops and tours at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. Trained as a textile designer, she has a passion for fabrics. The piece of chintz on the chest is just one sample of a collection of antique and vintage pieces she keeps for inspiration, folded in the drawers beneath. The antique hall chairs were painted in the unlikely, brilliant orange shade by Jane’s father-in-law, the influential antique dealer Robin Eden. The ship’s piano came with the house. The same mix of inherited antiques, original furnishings and things collected by Jane and by Tom, who is a coin and medal expert, fills the rest of the house. The large kitchen has wall shelves stacked with china, some old, some new, some in constant use, some purely decorative. Next to the kitchen is an inner hall with a floor painted by Jane to imitate black and white tiles, and a pair of pretty rosewood chairs, which, like the piano, were bought with the house. From here you enter the living room, which has sofas facing one another on either side of a wide brick fireplace. The long room that leads off this is used as a spare bedroom, where fortunate guests sleep in a ship’s bunk once belonging to the captain of a German ship – a piece of nautical history purchased by Robin Eden along with another bunk in which the Kaiser slept. Just as the contents of the house have come from various sources, so has the

decoration evolved over the years. ‘Or not’, says Jane. ‘In fact, most of it is pure accident. In the living room, for example, I started stripping the walls and then I rather liked the effect of the layers of paint and old plaster, so I left them. I did the same on the landing upstairs and found that gorgeous pink.’ In the living room is a corner cupboard with dark, mottled paintwork, like imitation tortoiseshell. Just like the walls, she started stripping it and then decided to stop. She calls it another accident, but that is to deny the skill it takes to recognise when enough is better than completion, imperfection more satisfying than an immaculate finish. The house remains a work in progress. They may decide to paint the beams in the living room and Jane would like to decorate the bathroom with patterned wallpaper to look like a room in a favourite engraving by Ravilious. For a long time she has been deliberating on whether or not to remove the print over the living room fireplace, an Edwardian cartoon of foxes dressed in hunting pink and eating boiled eggs at a tea table. ‘It’s really a terrible thing’, Jane laughs, ‘but it’s one of the few items I have from my childhood in India. It used to belong to an uncle who lived on a very remote tea plantation. As a child it completely summed up my idea of what England was like.’ It’s hard not to secretly hope that it stays where it is. exclusivemagazines.co.uk 67

FADE TO GREY

here’s nothing cold and clinical about the trend for grey kitchens. This incredibly versatile colour can be used in a whole host of shades to create bright and beautiful looks, as well as dark and moody ones – and everything in between. Grey looks fabulous on highgloss contemporary styles, as well as the more traditional hand-painted cabinets we usually associate it with. What’s more, lots of designers are starting to use a varying palette of greys in a single room – for instance, picking out an island unit in a different shade from the rest of the cabinets.

ntroducing copper accents into your kitchen space is a brilliant way to update its look. Designers these days treat the kitchen the same as a sitting room – a key living space that can be transformed with new lamps, handles and accessories. ‘Consumers want “smart spaces” that maximise every available square centimetre to create practical, social and stylish zones that flow on every level,’ says Tony McCarthy from Crown Imperial.

Dime Industrial Copper Lacquered Tall Bar Stool, £160. Visit alexanderandpearl.co.uk

McCarthy also identifies the increased use of luxury finishing touches like copper to ‘add texture and enhance the entire kitchen design’. Time to bring a burnished glow into the heart of your home. Visit crown-imperial.co.uk. exclusivemagazines.co.uk 75

THE RETURN OF THE PANTRY

Keep clutter behind closed doors with the new breed of larder cupboards – there’s one to suit every style of kitchen.

S

uper storage is big news this season, and gone are the days when you have to cram all your kitchen paraphernalia into three stingy cupboards.

The Harvey Jones Linear Store Cupboard offers the storage benefits of a traditional pantry with a contemporary design. Call 0800 389 6938 for details.

‘Most of our kitchens now include at least one large larderstyle storage unit that can be completely closed off at a moment’s notice to conceal any mess,’ says leading London kitchen designer Neil Lerner. ‘Most clients want to hide as much of their stuff away as they possibly can.’ There’s another reason why the pantry is a must-have item in most of the open-plan kitchens Lerner designs. ‘People are definitely cooking more from scratch, so they often need to store a lot of dry goods,’ he says. ‘It’s more aesthetically pleasing to keep the worktops clear by concealing as much as possible out of sight in large storage cupboards, and our clients prefer to have the option of closing the doors as and when required.’ Visit neillerner.com.

WHATEVER STYLE OF KITCHEN YOU HAVE, THERE’S BOUND TO BE THE PERFECT PANTRY FOR YOU. FOR EXAMPLE… ✻ The walk-in pantry can also be used as a preparation area for measuring out ingredients, as well as a storage area for the plethora of kitchen gadgets, like coffee makers and blenders, that would otherwise be cluttering up worktops.

Hide away your kitchen essentials Extreme Design Dwyer Large Larder with internal oak cabinetry. extreme-design.co.uk

✻ The pull-out-pantry utilises every square inch of space and works beautifully in the most modern designs. ✻ The floor-to-ceiling pantry tones with the rest of the cabinetry, and keeps clutter firmly out of sight and out of mind. ✻ Pantries with drawers are a great way to store everything from mugs to herbs and spices, so you can find them in an instant. This Tall Larder Unit stores a lot of groceries in a small space. From Cooke & Lewis at B&Q. Visit diy.com 76 exclusivemagazines.co.uk

the store’s new Luxaflex range – one of the most well-known brands on the market. Wireless battery-powered blinds by Lutron and Creation Baumann are also new to the collection and can be operated by remote control from anywhere in the room. The remote control even works with blinds set behind curtains or valances, and operation is virtually silent. Standard batteries should last three to five years, and the blinds are also easy to replace. Mains-powered models are available too. A wide range of colours and finishes in sheer, dim-out or blackout are available for both roller and pleated fabric blinds. The clever design allows for widths up to three metres and a drop of up to three metres, making them ideal for large areas, such as bifold doors. blindsandawnings.org

unded by the keyholders who pay an annual fee to use them, the Cadogan Estate gardens add a verdant charm to the city and provide a glimpse of greenery for passers-by. From the largest, Cadogan Place, to smaller spaces like Hans Place, they all contain something to make a gardener’s heart

beat a little faster. Take Cadogan Place gardens, for example. If you have ever walked or taken the bus down Sloane Street, from Knightsbridge to Sloane Square, you will have passed these gardens – a vast green space with tennis courts, trees, shrubberies and lawns that provides an exclusive back garden for the residents of the surrounding houses. jewel in the crown of the Cadogan Estate, owned for 300 years by the Cadogan family who, after the Duke of Westminster, are London’s wealthiest landlords. It is actually two gardens, Cadogan Place South and Cadogan North, separated by Pont Street, home to one of London’s historic green cabmen’s shelters, and what appears to be an ever-present queue of traffic. Today, the oldest things in this part of the garden are probably the mulberry trees, said to have been planted by Charles II at the exclusivemagazines.co.uk 83

end of the 17th century, in an attempt to create a silk industry in England. Their aged limbs seem to want to rest, like an elderly man leaning his elbows on a wall. At some point in the past 20 or 30 years, they have been fitted with metal braces, like calipers, and where they fit too tightly the branches have begun to grow around them. In the northern section of the Cadogan Place gardens, an impressive stand of mimosa also suffers from the results of modern ‘improvements’. Head gardener Ric Glenn at first found it hard to understand why the mimosa trees were the first in the garden to suffer in dry spells – these trees are tough, droughttolerant performers in their native south-east Australia. He then realised that because of the underground car park, built in the 1970s, the trees were sitting in what was effectively a concrete bowl. Maintenance of all the Cadogan Estate gardens is funded by keyholders’ annual charges, each with its own budget. Those with lots of keyholders, such as Cadogan Square – surrounded by Victorian mansion flats built in the style christened ‘Pont Street Dutch’ by Sir

Knot garden

GARDENS

Osbert Lancaster – have a much larger income. Small gardens like Hans Place may only have a small budget, but gardener Glenn has created a mini masterpiece. He was keen to create vistas through some of the shrubbery, so that residents get glimpses of just how attractive it is and apply to use it. Its most noteworthy specimen is a massive Persian Ironwood tree, thought to be one of the biggest in the UK. Another eye-catching detail are

the long racemes of white wisteria that hang gracefully from a pergola. Perhaps the key to successful park design is to focus on variety, and Glenn’s team certainly provides this. Throughout the gardens you can find everything from subtropical tree ferns to traditional English foxgloves; from elaborate knot gardens to beautifully clipped lawns. The next time you’re in Knightsbridge, it’s definitely worth making a detour, to take the time to stop and smell the roses.

‘IT’S A DOG EAT DOG INDUSTRY’ Scott Barnard, sous chef at The Grove in Hertfordshire, lifts the lid on life in a professional kitchen and reaching the finals of MasterChef WORDS ROSALIND SACK

What made you decide to go through all the stress of taking part in MasterChef: The Professionals? A friend of mine who I trained, Steve Barringer, reached the final in 2011, and he suggested it. My wife and my head chef, Russell Bateman, also pushed me to do it. I was going to do it last year, but my daughter was born at the same time as they were filming, so it wouldn’t have been fair to do it then. Maybe I should have waited another year, then I might have won!

How nerve-wracking is it? It is stressful, mainly because of the pressure you put on yourself because you don’t want to look like an idiot on TV! And you want to do your friends and family and work colleagues proud. It doesn’t help that there’s a 15-strong production crew watching you all the time!

wracking cooking for people who I follow and who inspire me, but I had a good day and I think that was one of the greatest achievements of my career. All of us 10 finalists watched it back together before it went out on TV and Mark Stinchcombe – who won it – and I had the biggest grins on our faces! At the time I was gutted I didn’t win, but now I look back on it I’m really happy with how well I did.

‘My tutor actually told me never to go to catering college because I was always getting in trouble.’

What was the standout moment from your time on the show? The chef’s table, when I had to cook for 25 Michelin-starred chefs. It was nerve-

How scary are Monica Galetti and Marcus Wareing in real life? Very scary at first. Marcus, in particular, is a tough nut to crack, but I finally got there in the end. I think he liked a little bit of cockney charm! Monica was a bit easier to approach. But everyone on the show really supports you and pushes you to progress.

Are chefs a competitive bunch, or are you all one big happy family?

Of course chefs are competitive, it’s a dog eat dog industry, but everyone’s going through the same ride so we support each other. And we all genuinely got on really

Rob Buckhaven HAPPY HOUR

well on Masterchef. You don’t want to see anyone mess up and you want everyone to do well… you just want the judges to enjoy your food more. There are a lot of professional kitchens where chefs are always against each other; they want to make sure they’re ready for service and they don’t care about anyone else. It’s a tough environment to be in. We don’t work like that at The Grove – we’re a relaxed, friendly team – but I’ve worked in kitchens before where everyone’s out to get each other, which isn’t nice.

Are there any other chefs in your family? What inspired you to take this route? No, none. I was brought up in South East London where a good dinner was pie and mash, which I still love to this day! We didn’t used to cook a big Sunday lunch and all sit down together, my family wasn’t like that. It wasn’t until we started going on holiday to France, Italy and Spain when I was a kid, and we would go and get fresh bread, pastries and jam from the market, that I started to get into food and became more adventurous with what I ate. Then I decided to do Home Economics at school as I was never very academic and it was all girls in the class! My tutor actually told me never to go to catering college because I was always getting in trouble.

Where are your favourite places to eat out in your local area? I live just outside Tring and I don’t get to eat out much, but when I do I like to see my good friend Laurie Gear at The Artichoke in Old Amersham – where I’m hopefully doing a guest chef spot soon. I used to like going to Pennyhill Park in Bagshot when Michael Wignall was there and Danesfield House in Marlow when Adam Simmonds was there. And, of course, Tom Kerridge’s Hand and Flowers and The Coach in Marlow.

WINE & CHOCOLATE

PAIRING MASTERCLASS With Easter Day just around the corner, thoughts naturally turn to eggs, bunnies and really anything with chocolate in the title. Facestuffing is an accepted ritual of the day, and chocolate is widely regarded as the indulgence of choice to enable said gorging. There is a myth that chocolate and wine don’t pair well together. Sure, it can have pronounced flavours with a tendency to overpower, but if you think clever and get the balance right, it can also be the money-match made in heaven. Like olive oil, cheese, coffee and, of course, wine, chocolate has now become the territory of connoisseurs. Precise percentages of cocoa beans, their provenance and exact makeup of their ganache have brought new sophistication to the subject. As a rule of thumb, one of the best ways of thinking about the ‘art’ of pairing is to imagine the fruits that go well with chocolate. Either match your wine to the notes in the chocolate itself, or look for contrasts. Just remember, it always comes down to personal preference in the end – some people like a fruity Cabernet with theirs, others find it too dry. As a guide, when it comes to white

chocolate, try light, frothy wines with floral notes, such as Prosecco, or a fun and frothy wine we haven’t seen since the '70s, Asti Spumante. Made from the Muscat grape, its apricot and white peach notes combine with the vanillaladen white choc like a chord from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. The creamy flavours in milk chocolate call for something equally rich, in the form of Hungarian Tokaji or a nutty Tawny Port. If the chocolate is caramel-filled, look to pair it with something equally buttery such as a Californian Chardonnay. For a nutty agenda, give a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon a whirl, or bust out an almond-stashed Pedro Ximénez Sherry. When it comes to dark chocolate, we only have to look at Terry’s Chocolate Orange to see that citrussy orange is a classic match, and one that is reflected in an unctuous Spanish dessert wine made from Muscat. The turbo-charged intensity of chocolate with a Cacao content of 70% or over is gasping for a gutsy red made from Grenache, Malbec or Shiraz. Brawny tannins are taken care of by the silkiness of the cocoa butter, which smooths out any dryness and allows the flavours some well-earned snuggle-time.

‘Like olive oil, cheese, coffee and, of course, wine, chocolate has now become the territory of connoisseurs.’

What’s your guilty food secret? If I could only have one more meal, it would probably be a chicken Caesar salad, sod all the 10-course tasting dinners! I’m also a sucker for crisps – I could eat salt and vinegar all day long.

Stratfordupon-Avon, Warwickshire Even after several centuries, Shakespeare’s plays continue to impress and entertain audiences worldwide, with his works translated into more than 75 languages. This year though, attention will be firmly focused on his birthplace, Stratfordupon-Avon, which is marking the 400th anniversary of his death on 23 April with a series of new openings and

special exhibitions. Learn about Shakespeare’s personal life through artefacts on display at a re-imagining of his former family home, New Place, where he lived for the last 19 years of his life and wrote 26 major works. The new attraction has been billed as the single most significant project to commemorate the playwright’s legacy. Delve further into his past by visiting Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall at King Edward VI School, where the Bard honed his writing skills. Following a major restoration, the 15th century building is open to the public for the first time. The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has also launched a new discovery tour, Page To Stage, giving a behind-the-scenes look at the famous playhouse and an opportunity to look inside the RSC’s store of 30,000 costumes at The Other Place. ✻ Visit shakespeares-england.co.uk/ shakespeare-2016 for more information.

This year, America’s National Park service celebrates its 100th anniversary, providing a good excuse to visit some of the country’s most pristine and protected areas. The state of Utah is home to the ‘Mighty 5’ national parks, and with Delta’s new daily direct flight from Heathrow to Salt Lake City operating from 2 May (from £754 return), it’s now even easier to reach. Marvel at the wind-sculpted sandstone structures in Arches National Park, explore the towering hoodoos in Bryce Canyon, or discover a 100-mile warp in the Earth’s crust at Capitol Reef. After dark, the sightseeing continues at several designated International Dark Sky Parks. Photograph the Milky Way above the famous Mesa Arch landform in Canyonlands, or wander through ancient Puebloan ruins at the Natural Bridges National Monument. During the winter season, Utah is a favourite destination for skiers and snowboarders. The recently opened Cherry Peak Resort, near Logan in northern Utah, features three triple chairlifts and a 1.25mile run. ✻ Visit visitutah.com

The cinema release of Disney’s The Jungle Book in April will put the spotlight on India and its most famous animal resident – the Bengal tiger. These highly endangered creatures are notoriously difficult to spot, but Exodus (exodus.co.uk) will be giving it their best shot on a 16-day escorted Land of the Tiger tour exploring classic Kipling country, with various departures between October and April. Bengal tiger safaris are a key focus of the trip, with considerable time spent in three of the key national parks – Pench,

Kanha and Bandhavgarh. The trip costs from £2,449pp (two sharing), including accommodation, most meals, guides, 15 game drives and flights. Rudyard Kipling set his classic novel in the region now known as Madhya Pradesh, which is home to some of the country’s greatest jungles. ✻ Village Ways (villageways.com) offer a 10-night trip through the area, following in the footsteps of 19th-century travel pioneer James Forsyth. Visit the teak forest of the Satpura tiger reserve, the cool haven of Pachmarhi Hillstation and stay in Sakata in the migratory corridor between Pench and Kanha tiger reserves. The trip costs from £1,352pp (two sharing), including full-board accommodation and activities. Flights cost extra.

Excellent wildlife sightings, a commitment to conservation and a good range of luxury accommodation make Botswana a top safari destination. On 30 September, the country will celebrate 50 years of independence, prompting Lonely Planet to declare it the number one destination to visit in 2016. WORDS CHRIS WALSH PHOTOGRAPHY TRISTAN WARE DRIVEN ASTON MARTIN DB9 GT VOLANTE

THE MOST POTENT DB9 YET

B

efore I do anything ‘actual’ with the new Aston Martin DB9 GT, I think I ought to tick off a few basics first, because it’s the considered range of ingredients that make a supercar successful. It’s desirable (see badge), it’s fast (see engine) and it’s very, very good to look at (see bedroom wall posters). So it’s easy money banked for Aston and a good job done? Well, not quite because for reasons beyond its control, the new DB9 GT may well be the hardest sell of the year. And the reason is purely numerical, as potential customers (who would usually be all over a new DB9 variant) may not have even noticed its arrival this time. And this is because of its imminent summertime replacement; the more totally new and more totally desirable DB11. But I am trying to avoid the same trap, as there are several reasons why the current DB9 GT is still desirable – and the main one has to be the engine. I will utter this very quietly, but it will be the last naturally aspirated V12 appointed to the DB name, as Aston has already confirmed a 5.2 V12 Twin-Turbo from this point onwards. No huge surprise there,

I mean even Ferrari is doing that these days. So the DB9 GT may be just the reason you need to grab yourself a big bag of V12, facemelting bliss, and there aren’t many V12s out there that do quite such a good job as this one. It’s worth pointing out that it also becomes the most potent DB9 yet devised, by virtue of its uprated 6.0-litre V12 engine, which now boasts 539 bhp. One thing I won’t miss, however, is the 6-speed gearbox that makes its last stand in the DB9 GT. In its heyday, it probably was something to be impressed with, but in today’s world of quick shifting 8-speed equivalents, it becomes ancient. Aside from the subtle GT badges, black painted splitter/diffuser and revised light treatments, the new 10-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels identify this new DB9 GT. Black anodised brake calipers and a GT engraving on the aluminium fuel filler cap further distinguish the current model. Options are available for those who wish to further personalise their car, including carbon fibre tail lamp inserts, side strakes and graphite, diamond-turned 10-spoke alloy wheels with alternative brake caliper colours.

MOTORING

Homage to the

CLASSICS MOTORING EXPERT CHRIS WALSH DISCOVERS THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS MONTH’S EVOCATIVE GOODWOOD 74TH MEMBERS’ MEETING

C

reated by Goodwood owner, Lord March, to recreate the atmosphere and camaraderie of the original British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) Members’ Meetings held at Goodwood Motor Circuit, the 74th Members’ Meeting aims to conjure up the most evocative sights and sounds from the classic era of motor racing once more. This year, the event (taking place on 19–20 March) will pay homage to the brutally dramatic ground effect Formula 1 cars of the late

1970s and early 1980s, and some of the scariest sportscars of all time – the mighty 5-litre Group 5 cars of 1969–71. Around 35 years ago, ground effect aerodynamics represented a quantum leap in F1 design, as F1 teams had already been utilising front and rear wings to create downforce for nearly a decade. But when Peter Wright of Lotus turned his attention to the underside of the vehicle instead, the results were remarkable and cornering speeds increased dramatically. A field of more than 30 ground effect F1 cars will take to the Goodwood Motor Circuit

in West Sussex for a high-speed demonstration run as part of the Members’ Meeting, giving visitors a privileged insight into what this short-lived era of Formula 1 felt, and more importantly, sounded like. The list of participating cars includes every model of ground effect Lotus, Ferrari 312T5, Williams FW07 and FW08, Brabham BT49C and McLaren MP4, as well as lesser known marques like Ensign, Fittipaldi, Osella and Wolf. But if power is your thing, then maybe the 16 Group 5 cars taking part in a highspeed demonstration will offer you the brutal power

and immense speed that are capable from these machines. Under the regulations at the time, prototype racers were limited to 3-litre engines, but ‘production’ cars – of which at least 25 examples had to be built – were allowed to use 5-litre units. Manufacturers exploited this loophole by building production runs of what were, in effect, full-blown prototypes with 5-litre engines. As well as the action on the famous Goodwood Motor Circuit, the Members’ Meeting features a huge range of attractions for all the family off-track, including an exclusive event on the Saturday evening and a wide variety of food and entertainment on offer throughout the weekend. A fairground, live music, and a series of games in which visitors can score additional points for their chosen ‘house’ complete the carnival atmosphere. Tickets for the 74th Members’ Meeting are now available. For more information or to book tickets, visit goodwood.com/74mm

Stamp duty stampede

A three percentage point stamp duty increase for buy-to-let investors is set to come into force in April, which could see housing market activity ramped up as investors rush to beat the deadline. However, there could be a ray of light for aspiring first-time buyers, who may potentially find that after April, they face less competition from investors for properties. Sarah Beeny, TV property expert and owner of estate agent Tepilo, says of the stamp duty hike for buy-to-let investors: ‘It will undoubtedly affect the market as it will increase the costs associated with buying for investors, and they’ll really need to work out their figures before considering buying a buy-to-let property.’ Beeny says the stamp duty increase on investment properties ‘will help to slow parts of the buy-to-let market down, particularly the entry-level market, which is where first-time buyers sit and where a lot of investors invest in.’ She adds: ‘This will hopefully help slow down prices and make them more affordable and more in line with earnings.’

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) expects house prices across the UK to increase by around 6% annually in 2016 – with values jumping to 7% in South East England.

PROPERTY PRICE TUBE MAP The average house prices around each of the 280 tube stops on the London Underground network has been marked on a new property price tube map. The map, compiled by the latest research by online estate agent eoov.co.uk, using

average local property prices, highlights the best value areas, as well as the biggest change in average prices between neighbouring areas. The map shows that moving just one stop along the tube network can make a big difference in terms of the average property price; the most notable areas being Finchley Road and Wembley Park. The average house price

in Finchley Road exceeds £1.4 million, but buying an equivalent property just eight minutes down the line in Wembley Park, could save UK buyers £1 million. Meanwhile, on the Northern Line, the difference in the average house price between Hampstead in Zone 2 and Golders Green in Zone 3 is nearly half a million. eMoov.co.uk

Hotel living at home Five-star homes with luxury hotel services are on the rise across London, with more five-star apartments completed in 2015 and expected to be finished in 2016 than in the previous 10 years combined, according to The Telegraph. Many of these apartments are linked to neighbouring hotels so they can share facilities such as private beauty treatment rooms, swimming pools, spas, in-residence dining, laundry services and residents-only bars. For instance, residents of the 103 private apartments at the 42-floor River Tower in Battersea – due for completion in 2018 – will be able to enjoy access to the banqueting hall, top-end restaurants and sky

bar of the neighbouring Wanda Vista Hotel (pictured), as well as the hotel’s childcare facilities, golf simulator room, valet parking and luxury karaoke room. Simon Tollit, director of central London sales at Sotheby’s International Realty says: ‘London now has dozens and dozens of developments offering five-star hotel services, which very wealthy people are willing to pay for. We’re talking £40,000 a year as a rough average, but some will pay £70,000 to enjoy the spoils of a luxury hotel concierge to look after their every need.’ It’s thought that the popularity of these five-star concierge-style services will see them soon spread beyond the capital.

will struggle to find a better location than these new luxury apartments overlooking Newbury Racecourse in West Berkshire. The launch of David Wilson Homes’ development of 56 apartments looks set to attract buyers seeking a home in a unique setting. ‘These new one, two and three-bedroom apartments have been thoughtfully designed to provide a delightful yet practical space in which to live,’ said Rob Allen, sales director at David Wilson Homes. ‘This superb location is highly sought-after. We’re expecting demand among buyers wishing to move here to grow further after our successful launch of these impressive new homes,’ adds Rob. Conveniently located close to commuter links, and boasting breathtaking views of lush Berkshire landscape, this Newbury Racecourse location offers the best of town and country. dwh.co.uk

‘I can still sing everything I have ever done and there’s new stuff too.’

’m still curious and excited about my work,’ laughs Lulu, 67, when asked how she feels about her upcoming UK tour. ‘I can get up on the stage in a way that I have never done before. I know how lucky I am. I’ve got angels on my shoulders.’

‘I’m still excited about my work. I can get up on the stage in a way that I have never done before. I know how lucky I am.’ Lulu has been a recording artist for over 50 years, in a career that has seen her hanging out with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, having a well-publicised affair with David Bowie, marrying a Bee Gee, right through to performing for the first time at Glastonbury in 2015. ‘I’m still kicking, you know,’ she laughs. Lulu describes her new album, Making Life Rhyme, as ‘more personal’, explaining that for the first time she’s not afraid to be vulnerable. ‘I was always slightly frightened,’ she says. ‘I had a very violent childhood and could never talk about it. I realised emotionally I never really grew up. I always felt different, and not in a good

way. I was awkward. I have had many disappointments and sadness, but over the years, I’ve had to learn to reach out for help.’ Those numerous disappointments include a divorce, in 1995, from her second husband, celebrity hairdresser John Frieda, the father of her son, Jordan. ‘I really thought, you know, that I would die and a part of me did die,’ she says. ‘But I’ve always been a seeker. Looking back, I would tell my younger self that “you are perfect as you are”.’ Lulu can’t wait for the tour to start. ‘I can still sing everything I have ever done and there’s new stuff too,’ she says. ‘There’s a wisdom from the experience and a love of what I do. I want the whole audience to be up on their feet at the end of the night. My band are all young and cool, not one of them is 40. They’re all great musicians and they can all sing. The main thing I want is for people to say “what a great night I had”.’ ✻ Lulu’s tour runs from 2–31 March 2016. This includes dates at G Live Guildford on 4 March, Wycombe Swan on 7 March and Watford Colosseum on 25 March. For more information, visit luluofficial.com
