To meet our Paris Climate commitments, we cannot afford to overlook anything! The case for Scope 3 – Embodied Carbon Reduction
474,770 lbs. CO2 reduced annually
City of Calgary, Alberta Multiple City locations are serviced with floor matting with various cleaning/exchange frequencies, ranging from weekly to every-4th week. The RFP issued represented a total of 38,284 ft2 of matting to be placed with a total annual service requirement of 1,253,824 ft2 . Before using Executive Mat Service Ltd., the City of Calgary contracted with a large international supplier utilizing industry standard matting and processing equipment.

5.8.2 Environmental Mitigation – Mat Service
Scope 3 Carbon Emission Reductions
Floor Mat Service White Paper
Executive Summary A recent article penned by the Corporate Knights laments the dangerously slow approach business leaders, bankers and politicians have taken with regard to climate change. It is reported that Scope 3 carbon emissions can form up to 80% of a Company’s total carbon emissions and therefore must become an integral part of responsible organizations sustainability plans. Scope 3 emissions are emissions from sources that are not owned and not directly controlled by the reporting company. This is usually considered to be the “supply chain”. Floor matting is an important piece of equipment employed by buildings to ensure safe clean floors. Like any asset, following proper maintenance protocols is required to ensure the asset operates at optimum levels. Floor matting is typically purchased and maintained using steam-extraction cleaning or rented and serviced by a local industrial laundry. Both programs come with significant Scope 3 carbon emissions. It is estimated that cleaning floor matting results in 45 billions pounds of carbon being released to the environment annually in North America alone. Executive Mat Service Ltd. has developed a market disrupting floor matting technology that reduces Scope 3 carbon emissions associated with supplying and maintaining floor matting by 98%. This White Paper documents the science behind the Company’s carbon reduction assertions. The White Paper has been submitted to the Sustainability Sciences Department within the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology for 3rd party verification. Executive Mat Service Ltd. has submitted its 3rd verified “White Paper” for inclusion on the Billion Pound Challenge “Ledger”. When a firm elects to adopt floor mat services supplied by Executive Mat Service Ltd. annual Scope 3 carbon reductions are quantified and submitted for inclusion on “The Ledger”. “The Ledger” is an aggregation of innovative Scope 3 carbon emission reductions across a multitude of domains.
To incentive firms to adopt Scope 3 carbon reducing goods and services, firms receive Pericoin cryptocurrency annually which are generated through inclusion on “The Ledger”. Pericoin generated are distributed as follows; 43% to adopting firm, 43% S-3Carbon-Reserve, and 14% to the post-secondary institute providing the validation services. The S-3Carbon-Reserve is a centralized organization charged with managing “The Ledger” utilizing up-to-date blockchain security. The S-3Carbon Reserve is also charged with establishing liquidity for Pericoin in circulation. Visit billionco2challege.ca to learn more.

Example: ABC Company Traditionally installs 1,000 square feet (ft2) of Permanent Matting and replaces matting every 4 years. The Scope 3 carbon savings associated with installing Weather-Stopper™ is as follows: [(1,000 x 3.8)-(1,000 x 1.6)] = 2,200 lbs. Scope 3 CO2 carbon reduction. Traditionally Permanent Matting is disposed of in landfill at the end of its service life(in this example every four years). Weather-Stopper™ matting is fully recyclable after its service life contributing further to Scope 3 carbon reduction associated with landfill methane.

Where: fs = annual square footage of matting serviced Os = Operation CO2 per square foot of cleaning method fc = annual square footage serviced with CDF clean system Oc = Operational CO2 per square foot using CDF technology Example: ABC Company Has 100 locations and uses a weekly mat service. Each location has 100 ft 2 in-service. Total annual square footage (ft2) is 100 locations × 100 ft2 in-service × 52 weeks per year = 520,000 ft2 of matting serviced annually. Matting is laundered using industry standard methods at .366 lbs. CO2 per pound cleaned (soil weight = 1 lb./ft2) Total lbs. CO2 expended annually = 520,000 x .366 = 190,320 lbs. CO2. Using Weather-Stopper™ on an optimized service frequency of 13x per year, annual ft 2 serviced = 100 locations × 100 ft2 in-service x 13 services/year = 130,000 ft2 of matting serviced annually. Matting is laundered using CDF technology @ .005 lbs./CO2 per ft2. CO2 expended annually = 650 lbs.
SCALING SCOPE 3 CARBON REDUCTION
Weather-Stopper™ service with CDF cleaning technology is being rolled out across North America and Europe. Each building converted from industry standard “status quo” matting programs drives Scope 3 carbon reductions. The Scope 3 carbon reductions from each building conversion is registered on the billion-pound CO2 Ledger. The annual available Scope 3 carbon reduction from floor matting alone exceeds 40 billion pounds CO2 in North America alone.
