"In the face of an emergency, immediate action is not just a response, it's

"An action plan devoid of measurement tools is akin to navigating without a compass; directionless  City of Calgary carbon footprint and uncertain." =16.38 megatonnes (16.38 billion

kgs CO2e).  Estimated cost to achieve Net-Zero = $87 Billion

Carbon net-zero means balancing the scales of emissions, where every carbon release is counteracted by an equivalent amount of carbon reduction. "Who is keeping track of our environmental progress hinges on robust methodologies, ensuring accurate, transparent, and accountable measures."

•A Calgary-based non-profit platform for the methodical journey to carbon net-zero. •A marketplace to recognize and monetize low carbon innovation and adoption. •Membership driven carbon netzero community. •Pericarbon.org

"The quickest path to carbon net-zero is through assigning a tradeable value to carbon emissions, turning environmental responsibility into an economic imperative."

•"Carbon net-zero Economics 101: Grasping the balance of carbon supply and demand forces is key to steering our world towards a sustainable future."

"Pericarbon.org is the go-to guide for understanding how the economic market works in making our world carbon net-zero”

"Accurate accounting of one's carbon footprint necessitates the inclusion of all Scopes of carbon emissions, ensuring a comprehensive and true measure of environmental impact."

"From an economics viewpoint, a carbon footprint or emission is the total cost of greenhouse gases we generate, measured in impact rather than dollars, reflecting our environmental balance sheet."

•When you've minimized your own carbon footprint to the lowest possible level, you have the option to financially support others in their efforts to reduce their emissions, effectively offsetting your remaining impact.

"Verifiable Emission Reductions (VERs) are the tradeable currency empowering the larger market to offset carbon emissions, driving the economic quest for carbon net-zero with accountability as its cornerstone."

•"As more nations and entities pledge to a netzero emissions agenda at COP28, we stand on the cusp of an exponential surge in demand for VERs, accelerating our collective journey towards a sustainable future."

"When an organization professes a commitment to carbon net-zero, it implies a readiness to purchase VERs, effectively balancing their carbon ledger in the economy of environmental stewardship."

•Supply shortage of high-quality VER’s is a very real problem!

•"If an organization vows to achieve carbon net-zero and fails to deliver, they confront a tangible threat to their reputation, casting a long shadow over their credibility and intentions."

•The Pericarbon.org platform plays a crucial role in the development of a highquality supply of Verified Emission Reductions (VERs). The process involves several key steps: •Innovation in Carbon Reduction: Innovators develop a product or service designed to reduce carbon emissions. This step is fundamental as it focuses on creating solutions that have a tangible impact on reducing carbon footprints, starting from a clearly defined baseline. •Verification Process: Once a product or service is developed, innovators submit a detailed "white paper" to a qualified third party. This document outlines their carbon reduction claims. The third party's role is to thoroughly review and verify these claims, ensuring that they are accurate and feasible. This step adds credibility and authenticity to the claimed emission reductions. •Establishing Quantification Guidelines: The qualified third party then establishes quantification guidelines for tracking emission reductions over time, compared to the established baseline. This is critical for objectively measuring the effectiveness of the product or service in the marketplace. These guidelines ensure that the emission reductions are not only theoretical but also practical and measurable in real-world scenarios. •Listing on Pericarbon.org Registry: After the emission reductions are quantified and verified, they are listed on the Pericarbon.org Registry. This platform serves as a marketplace where these verified emission reductions can be sold to organizations looking to balance their carbon balance sheets. By providing a transparent and accessible registry, Pericarbon facilitates the trade of VERs, connecting innovators with organizations seeking to offset their carbon emissions.

EXAMPLE

Qualified 3rd Party Verification of carbon claims. •Baseline: Wooden Rig Mat @ 1,181 kg CO2/mat •Yukon Innovation: 238 kg CO2/mat •Savings per mat: 1,181 kg – 238 kg = 943 kg CO2/mat •Rig mats produced annually: 18,938 x 943 kg CO2 = 17,858,534 kg CO2 •VER’s produced: 17,858.534 annually.

Product Innovation: Turn used tires into Rig Mats replacing wooden Rig Mats.

"Revenue from the sale of Verifiable Emission Reductions (VERs) is reinvested back into the hands of the innovators, serving as a financial offset for their costs and a powerful incentive for future innovations."

To satisfy growing demand for VER’s the marketplace must increase the rate of carbon lowering innovation to bring new supply of VER’s to the market.

"The city of Calgary has a unique opportunity to expedite climate action by actively supporting the Pericarbon.org platform. By purchasing Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) for their own use and endorsing supply chain vendors that offer verified low carbon products and services, Calgary can take a significant step forward addressing the “Climate Emergency.”

LANDFILL METHANE IS A SIGNIFICANT SOURCE OF DOWNSTREAM SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS

Organic waste in landfills decomposes anaerobically, leading to the generation of methane, a potent greenhouse gas 84x worse than CO2 over a 20-year period. This issue is so substantial that it rivals the greenhouse gas emissions of the entire oil and gas sector, highlighting the urgent need to eliminate organic waste form landfills.

•"The Green Thumb Initiative represents a proactive effort to divert organic wastes away from landfills, transforming them instead into clean, sustainable energy sources."

Landfill Waste Avoidance • 130,000 kg./year landfill waste has been recycled into clean energy since 2013. • Using science-based quantification the Green Thumb Initiative has resulted in annual Scope 3 carbon emissions of 1,092,000 kg CO2e

Did you know Eco-Growth Environmental is a Calgary-based technology company who formed part of the Circular City consortium for “solid waste”. Circular City was recognized as winner of this prestigious award.

On average Canadians drink 2.8 cups of coffee per day. It is estimated that 25% of the coffee consumed originates from single-use coffee pods.

ANOTHER GREEN THUMB INITIATIVE

1.

Population of Calgary: According to the 2021 Canadian census, Calgary had a population of approximately 1.27 million people.

2.

1.27 million people x 2.8 cups coffee x 25% = 899,000 coffee pods per day.

3.

40 spent coffee pods = 1 kilogram

4.

899,000 / 40 = 22,225 kilograms of waste is generated everyday.

5.

In landfill 22,225 decomposes anaerobically producing 22,225 kgs x 8.4 = 186,690 kgs. CO2e per day.

6.

Annual CO2e = 186,690 x 365 = 68 million kg CO2e

•"Single-use coffee pods have become a major contributor to organic waste accumulation in landfills, posing a significant environmental challenge. However, a pilot in the Calgary area has demonstrated that these coffee pods can be effectively recycled, offering a promising solution to this issue."

"The Coffee Pod Recycling “Pilot” successfully collected and processed 25,400 kilograms of coffee pod waste in the first year, resulting in landfill greenhouse gas avoidance equivalent to 213,360 kilograms of carbon dioxide." •The "Pilot" recycling initiative in the Calgary area is an innovative program aimed at tackling the environmental issue of coffee pod waste. This initiative operates through a simple yet effective process: •Collection: Spent coffee pods are collected at two participating bottle depots in the Calgary area, making it convenient for residents to drop off their used pods. •Processing: Once collected, these spent coffee pods are transported to the Executive Mat Service facility in Calgary. Here, they undergo a processing stage to separate the different components of the pods. •Conversion of Organic Material: The organic material, primarily the used coffee grounds, is extracted and converted into wood-like pellets. These pellets are suitable for use in pellet stoves, offering an eco-friendly heating solution. •Plastic Recycling: The plastic components of the coffee pods are not discarded. Instead, they are processed and transformed into dimension lumber at a specialized plant in Southern Alberta. •Overall, this initiative not only diverts waste from landfills but also repurposes it into useful products, demonstrating a practical approach to recycling and sustainable waste management.

"Tackling Scope 3 carbon emissions marks an important chapter in the fight against climate change. Addressing Scope 2 by decarbonizing electricity is a goal within our reach and a key solution that could globally resolve the climate crisis."
