Carissa Joy Johnson

Carissa Carissa

Joy Johnson's journey in fitness is a remarkable tale of passion, perseverance, and profound faith. From her early days as a dedicated young athlete to overcoming lifethreatening challenges, Carissa's story is one of inspiration and determination.

EARLY FITNESS JOURNEY

Carissa's fitness journey began in her childhood, driven by a love for athletics and a competitive spirit. "I've always had a love for and interest in athletics," she recalls. Her initial foray into organized sports came when she received a flyer for a local soccer program in the fourth grade. With the support of her parents, she eagerly joined and quickly developed an obsession for the sport, earning the nickname "Fireball" for her speed and tenacity on the field.

Throughout her school years, Carissa played soccer year-round, participating in spring and fall seasons, summer camps, and indoor soccer during the winter. Her dedication to the sport was unwavering, and she thrived on the physical demands it placed on her.

"Endurance was key, and running (my cardio at the time) became an early addiction," she explains.

In addition to soccer, Carissa was influenced by an older cheerleader friend who inspired her to focus on core strength. "She would tell me how her coach had them do 100 crunches a day," Carissa remembers. This routine became a personal challenge, and she committed to it daily, fostering a lifelong dedication to core fitness. "Time and consistency have definitely paid off as far as my core strength goes," she notes with pride.

HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND

Carissa's high school years were marked by significant achievements in soccer. Despite being one of the smallest players on the team, she worked tirelessly to prove her capabilities. Her efforts paid off as she served as Varsity Captain in her junior and senior years. "I wish I had learned the value of weight training in improving my game," she reflects, acknowledging that she graduated high school with minimal muscle beyond her abs and biceps.

Academically, Carissa was an overachiever, graduating as Valedictorian. She chose to focus on academics over pursuing college soccer, a decision that led to a challenging transition. Running and Tae-Bo became her primary physical outlets as she pursued her degree in Accounting, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2006.

A SHIFT IN CAREER PATH

Carissa's brief career in corporate accounting was marked by a realization that her true passion lay elsewhere. "My joy and passion were found in my 5-mile treadmill run after work," she says. The monotonous cubicle life led to depression, prompting her to reevaluate her career path.

An opportunity at The Little Gym of Colorado Springs offered Carissa a chance to combine her love for fitness with her desire to inspire others. She coached children, eventually becoming the Gym Director. Yet, her journey took another turn when she faced severe shin splints from excessive running, leading her to join a gym and embrace weightlifting.

This new focus on weight training transformed her physique and mindset. Encouraged by a friend and a bodybuilder she was dating; Carissa delved into fitness modeling and began studying to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). She won several online fitness competitions and felt a divine calling in personal training. "Winning an all-expense-paid trip to London in 2010 was a highlight," she recalls fondly.

SURVIVING A LIFE-THREATENING ACCIDENT

Carissa's life took a dramatic turn when she survived a life-threatening accident. "Without my faith, there is absolutely no way I'd be where I am today," she asserts. Her faith in Jesus provided the strength and hope needed to cope with the physical and emotional challenges following the accident.

The severity of her injuries left her completely reliant on others, and her recovery journey was arduous. Despite the setbacks, Carissa found solace in her faith. "Spending time in God's Word has always been important," she notes, finding comfort and guidance in scripture during her recovery.

The discovery of a spot in her brain added another layer of uncertainty, but Carissa's faith led her to seek multiple medical opinions, ultimately opting for a conservative approach. Over time, the spot appeared less pronounced, affirming her belief in divine intervention.

ADJUSTING FITNESS POST-RECOVERY

Post-recovery, Carissa had to make significant adjustments to her fitness routine. Her knees and ankles could no longer handle the intensity of her previous workouts, necessitating modifications with lower weights and higher reps. Running, once a staple of her fitness regime, became a challenge, but she remained determined to improve. "My cardio choices also changed significantly," she explains. Despite the physical limitations, Carissa continued to pursue fitness goals with resilience and adaptability.

ADVICE FOR OTHERS

Carissa offers profound advice for those dealing with trauma or significant physical setbacks: "Don't give up. Just because the odds may seem against you, you never know what God may still have in store for your life." She emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and perseverance, urging others to push through obstacles and celebrate small victories. "You know yourself better than anyone else - so don't let others define your limits," she advises.

Current Fitness Goals & Motivation

Today, Carissa's fitness goals focus on improving her physique and overcoming the limitations imposed by her injuries. She is considering competing in a natural bodybuilding show, driven by a desire to represent a federation she can support as a mother of two. "Unfortunately, it seems physique expectations, even in bikini divisions, have become nearly unrealistic without PEDs; which for me personally, is not worth it," she remarks.

Motivation, for Carissa, comes from her family and her faith. "Motivation comes from my family - to be a good example to my kids, and from my husband who is a beast of an athlete," she shares. Reflecting on her journey, she remains grateful for her recovery and the ability to work out, always striving to honor the blessings she has received.

Carissa's journey is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and unwavering determination.

Teresa Lynn and her Holistic Fitness Path

nspiring women in Fitness stand out not just for their physical prowess and conditioning but for their ability to juggle multiple roles, uplift others, and maintain a holistic approach to health. Teresa Lynn is an example of one such inspiring woman who is a dedicated mother, fitness enthusiast, and advocate for mental well-being. Her story is one of self-discovery and empowerment, reflecting values that inspire others to pursue a healthier, more balanced life.

THE IMPACT OF MOTHERHOOD ON FITNESS GOALS

For Teresa, being a mother has been a transformative experience that has significantly shaped her fitness goals and priorities. "Being a mother has shaped my fitness goals and priorities over the years with an emphasis on increasing stamina, strength, and

mental well-being to keep a fit, energetic family life and be around for my son as long as possible," she shares.

Teresa believes in leading by example, demonstrating a healthy, active lifestyle to instill similar habits in her son. "He observes fitness in my daily routine and as he gets older, he wants to participate more! It's the greatest gift I can give him!" Through her actions, she hopes to teach her son the importance of maintaining a healthy physical body and using exercise as a strategy for optimizing mental and emotional health.

MAINTAINING AN ENGAGING FITNESS ROUTINE

Avoiding burnout and keeping her fitness regime fresh and engaging is crucial for Teresa. She achieves this by incorporating variety, choosing

exercises she enjoys, setting realistic goals, and listening to her body. "I have days where I do just cardio and then days for strength training to engage different muscle groups," she explains.

She sets achievable short-term goals week by week, as well as long-term goals by tracking her progress. She emphasizes the importance of rest and recovery, integrating stretching, proper nutrition, and self-care into her routine. Teresa also adjusts her fitness routine according to the seasons, taking advantage of different activities throughout the year to stay motivated and engaged.

BALANCED NUTRITION AND THE 80/20 RULE

Teresa's approach to nutrition is both practical and balanced. She follows the 80/20 rule in her weekly meal prep, ensuring that her meals are healthy and aligned with her fitness goals. "I prepare all my meals for the week which keeps me on track according to my fitness goals. Meals that are healthy and follow my macros."

However, she also allows herself to indulge in moderation, especially on weekends when she enjoys baking with her son and exploring new restaurants. She believes in teaching her son about balance and the importance of healthy nutrition, rather than labeling any food as "bad." She often creates healthier versions of favorite indulgences, using natural substitutes for oils, flour, and

MENTAL HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS: A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP

For Teresa, mental health is as important as physical fitness, and she views them as interconnected. "Truthfully, they go hand in hand. Being physically strong starts in the mind," she asserts. Exercise plays a crucial role in improving her mood and reducing stress, and maintaining a routine of daily activity is vital to her. Teresa also focuses on maintaining strong relationships with family and friends, engaging in purposeful activities, pursuing creative hobbies, and spending time in nature.

She prioritizes a balanced diet, hydration, sleep, and self-care to ensure her overall wellbeing. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the importance of mental strength and the impact it has on physical health.

sugar. One of her favorite snacks is air-popped popcorn with cheddar jalapeño seasoning, showcasing her knack for combining health and taste.

ADVICE FOR DIGESTIVE HEALTH

Teresa's advice for those struggling with digestive issues is rooted in self-awareness and education. "Start with a food log. BE CONSISTENT! Get to truly know yourself. How do you feel after eating certain foods," she advises. She stresses the importance of consulting a doctor, advocating for one's health, and seeking food sensitivity tests.

By educating herself about potential food triggers and symptoms of intolerances and inflammation, she has significantly improved her digestive health and overall well-being. She encourages others to share their experiences and be open to learning from each other, highlighting the value of community and shared knowledge.

EMPOWERING OTHERS THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media has been a positive platform for Teresa, allowing her to connect with others who share similar fitness journeys. She has received messages from people inspired and motivated by her content, and she values the opportunity to empower and encourage others. "I believe in empowering

and encouraging others and I have always appreciated authenticity, so I show that same respect to anyone who has reached out to me."

Whether discussing the challenges of balancing a fulltime career and family with a fitness lifestyle, or sharing transformation stories, recipes, and workout tips, Teresa remains committed to authenticity and support.

THE ESSENCE OF TERESA'S FITNESS JOURNEY

The most important message Teresa conveys about her fitness journey is the

transformative impact it has had on her life. "My fitness journey has been a path of selfdiscovery and inner strength. It's about cultivating authenticity and balance," she reflects.

She has faced challenges, celebrated victories, and learned invaluable lessons along the way. She also emphasizes that fitness is a lifelong journey and encourages others to never stop learning. "Every step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to a healthier, stronger, and more balanced version of yourself." She advocates for listening to one's body and mind, embracing changes, and recognizing

setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.

Teresa's dedication to fitness and wellness is evident in her holistic approach and commitment to continuous improvement. She believes in prioritizing mental and emotional well-being alongside physical health, celebrating progress, and empowering others. "The most rewarding part of the fitness journey is how it enhances your overall quality of life, boosts your confidence, and empowers you to face life's challenges with strength and resilience," she concludes.

Mannat Khanna

Insights into a Fitness Model’s Journey

annat Khanna is a popular fitness model and entrepreneur whose journey from a passionate dancer to a celebrated fitness icon has inspired many. Her dedication to health, fitness, and personal growth has made her a prominent figure in the industry. This interview delves into Mannat's background, her approach to maintaining peak physical condition, the balance between her professional and personal life, and her advice for aspiring fitness models.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into fitness modeling?

After topping my 12th board exams, I wanted to move out of my city for further education. Unfortunately, things didn't work out, and I couldn't move. I was shattered but knew I needed to pick myself up. So, I gave direction to

my passion for dance by setting up a dance and Zumba studio called Oomph. My love for modeling led me to participate in and win Femina Miss India. Gradually, my passion started turning into my profession, and I was constantly traveling for work.

How do you tailor your workouts to ensure you are in peak condition for a photoshoot or competition?

Consistency is the key. Whether it's for a competition, a shoot, or just a regular day, I tailor my workouts almost the same way. I don't pressure myself to work out more strenuously for special occasions. This approach helps me stay balanced and avoid burnout.

How do you balance your professional life with personal commitments?

Personal commitments do take a

setback at times due to my professional life, but I guess the people around me understand it and support my passion for work. It's a constant juggling act, but with understanding and support, it becomes manageable.

What advice would you give to aspiring fitness models looking to break into the industry?

In routine, fitness is all fun and exciting, but once it becomes your profession, it can become a trigger for anxiety and stress. To avoid this, take your fitness journey as you would in your daily life. Don't over-stress about it, or it will no longer be fun but a tiring task. Stay consistent, enjoy the process, and maintain a healthy balance.

How has social media impacted your career as a fitness model? Do you have any tips for building and maintaining a strong personal brand online?

I have received a lot of support and encouragement from social media. My audience, their comments (good or bad), inspire me to create interesting workout videos. This constant sense of creativity while working out makes it more enjoyable. As far as maintaining a brand name goes, I would say don't take too long a break from what your audience enjoys. Keep posting and updating them regularly about your fitness regime and innovations. This keeps them engaged and invested in your journey.

How do you continue to grow and evolve in your career? Are there any future goals or projects you are excited about?

My career is such that to sustain, one must grow and evolve continuously. There is no final level of achievement; with so much competition and talent around, you grow and learn every single day. One moment you may feel you have given

your best, and the next moment, you see someone or something better, pushing you to innovate or learn.

Yes, there are a few projects coming up that I am excited about, but I am not allowed to disclose them yet. Just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping all goes well. I will let you all know super soon.

Balancing Fitness, Motherhood, and Career

Amanda Robinson is a dynamic and inspiring figure in the fitness modeling world, seamlessly blending her roles as a dedicated mother, full-time professional, and fitness enthusiast. With a background rooted in competitive team sports, Amanda's fitness journey has evolved remarkably through different phases of her life.

Her passion for fitness ignited during her maternity leave when she initiated a free "Stroller Fit" class for the moms in her community. This initiative not only underscored her commitment to fitness but also highlighted her desire to uplift others.

In this interview, Amanda shares insights into her workout regimen, the

art of balancing professional and personal commitments, and her advice for aspiring fitness models.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into fitness modeling?

Since a young age, my fitness style has transformed in each phase of my life.

I have always been active in competitive team sports. When I was on maternity leave, I developed and offered a free “Stroller Fit” class for the moms in my community. This sparked my passion for fitness and desire to become my strongest self by lifting weights. I continue to give back to the community by coaching my son's

sports team and motivating/ inspiring the people around me by sharing my journey on how to balance fitness, being a mom and working full-time.

In 2023, I entered a “muscle up” challenge with Team Strong Girls, placing second, and winning a professional photoshoot. The photoshoot was an unbelievable experience that built my self-confidence to a level I'd never experienced before. I strongly believe that every woman should have this experience and celebrate their hard work.

How do you tailor your workouts to ensure you are in peak condition for a photoshoot or competition?

I keep it simple with the basics. I focus on compound movements and stay consistent with my routine and not over train.

How do you balance your professional life with personal commitments?

Being a working mom is hard, yet rewarding, as I love my career. To balance my goals, scheduling training days in my calendar is non-negotiable. I utilize my lunch break and will strength train 4X a week for 45 minutes. I will walk my dog nightly after my son goes to bed. In addition, on the weekends and some evenings, we attend our sporting activities.

What advice would you give to aspiring fitness models looking to break into the industry?

We often hear stories of extraordinary accomplishments, but the truth is, there is beauty in the ordinary. Keep that promise to yourself. The smallest changes are the biggest wins. Celebrate them. I have learned that being your number one fan is the highest form of self-love.

How has social media impacted your career as a fitness model? Do you have any tips for building and maintaining a strong personal brand online?

Be true to who you are. People will be inspired by you being real. No filters, sharing the good, the bad and the ugly. No one is perfect, and no one expects you to be. Some of my best supporters are friends I have met online through social media and have not met in real life, and I am so grateful for their support and friendship.

Sweat It Out with

Callie Jardine's love affair with Pilates started when she searched for low impact workouts that would help with her chronic tendonitis in her knees. Her growing up years as a competitive figure skater and her newfound love for Pilates and Barre prompted her to become a trainer.

With the emergence of the global pandemic, Callie turned to online platforms to expand her network. Soon enough, her social channels started garnering massive reach. Today, the young entrepreneur has gone onto establish a full-fledged business –Sweaty Studio and has built an ever-growing community who share a similar love for Pilates and fitness.

How would you describe your philosophy on health and fitness?

I'm all about balance and figuring out what works best for you. A big part of my classes includes empowering my students to learn to care for their bodies inside and out and part of that includes focusing on the mindset.

For women especially, a lot of fitness content is hyper focused on how it will make you look on the outside. I wanted to create fitness content that also focuses on how you feel on the inside.

I encourage my students to be kind to themselves and find

balance as they learn to adapt to healthy habits.

Not beating yourself up for allowing yourself to indulge every so often and having grace with yourself as you learn what does, and doesn't, work best for you is so important to me now and it's something I always strive to be very open and honest about as a fitness trainer and influencer.

Talk to us about your love for Pilates and how it eventually started your fitness business –Sweaty Studio.

I grew up as a competitive figure skater and suffered from chronic tendonitis in my knees which led me to search for alternative ways to train off of the ice. I eventually discovered low impact workouts like Pilates and barre during my search and completely fell in love. I began teaching Pilates and barre at local studios throughout Miami while I was still a college student. Around the same time, I also started sharing my passion for fitness, stemming from my upbringing as a competitive figure skater turned Pilates trainer, on a blog called “I'm Sweaty and I Know It”.

I was still a college student in 2020 when the pandemic forced all of the gyms to shut down in person classes and switch to virtual. I spent the remainder of my junior year juggling classes, learning how to teach virtual barre and Pilates classes, and publishing blog content. With so many starting to share fitness content on social media during this time, my friends

encouraged me to start posting workouts on TikTok, which I was reluctant to do at first but as soon as I did my social media accounts grew exponentially.

I decided to expand my content across platforms, started experimenting with long-form content on YouTube and teaching Instagram live classes from my blog's Instagram page, I'm Sweaty and I Know it. Eventually, that led to me creating my app and ondemand Pilates platform Sweaty Studio which has now become my full-time business. In addition to the studio, I also post relatable and practical wellness advice on my podcast, Healthy but Human, which currently has amassed over 1 million downloads. I was actually able to quit my full-time job last year to focus on my business fulltime and I've now generated over six figures in annual profits.

Since starting your business, what has been the biggest challenge for you when it comes to growth?

As a young entrepreneur I recognized there was a lot for me to learn. I also recognized that opportunities could be found in the least expected situations. Working through my imposter syndrome and preventing myself from letting it stop me from taking the steps I needed to grow was pivotal for me. I had to give myself a lot of grace to learn, make mistakes, and continue to grow.

I recall my very first launch made less than $50 and I felt like an absolute failure. Instead of letting the numbers kill my dreams and

stop me from continuing to pursue my goals, I recognized that I needed to keep learning and take this “failure” as an opportunity to grow. I eventually figured out what worked best for me and resonated most with my audience and as a result of perseverance and humility, I now have a 6-figure business!

It definitely takes a lot of patience and a lot of humility to recognize where you still need to learn but it's so important to not be afraid and keep trying.

What approach do you follow in maintaining your fitness level? What does a typical day look like in the life of Callie Jardine?

A big part of my fitness regimen at this stage is continuing to make sure I'm challenging myself so lately I work to progressively increase my resistance by blending heavier weights with my Pilates workouts.

A typical day for me these days is wake up, eat a nourishing breakfast, and make sure I'm getting some morning quiet time before I kick off my day. Balance is important to me, so I make sure to prioritize both my family and my business. Most days I'll take a walk with my husband and dogs outside, film social media content and workouts, and then I typically spend a great deal of time at the beach surfing or soaking in the sun.

Many afternoons I work on editing and engaging with my community and once work has wrapped up for the day, I focus on spending time with my husband and friends. Again, balance is key.

What would be your advice for someone just starting to lead a healthier lifestyle and incorporate fitness?

While it's so helpful to have guidance and inspiration from fitness coaches and influencers, ultimately, it's important to remember that no one is created the exact same and what works for you might look totally different than what's worked for others.

I made the mistake of pushing my body past its limits on multiple occasions because of the misconceptions I had about what it would take to get my body in peak physical shape. I unfortunately cannot tell anyone what the perfect amount of exercise is to get into shape, however I always encourage my students and audience to be open to trying new things and see what works best for them.

I find that the best results come when you feel confident, empowered, and remain consistent. It's far easier to be consistent with workouts you love than those you don't like very much so really focusing on finding what feels right for you is so important. How you feel about yourself as a whole is just as important. I live by the

statement “you cannot hate yourself into a body that you love”. I truly believe with selflove and confidence we are better able to find and stick with the routines that work best for us. Start with the mindset and the rest will follow.

Moving forward, what does the future hold for you and Sweaty Studio? What are you most excited about?

Sweaty Studio is unique in that I really grew my community via social media, particularly during the pandemic, so I'm really focused on ways to continue to engage with my online community which I currently do via monthly workout programs, challenges, and weekly live sessions. What's really exciting for me now is the opportunity to also grow and connect with my community in person by offering Pilates beach classes. Nothing beats having that face time with my students.

Additionally, I'm working to bring reformer Pilates to the studio since I've primarily stuck with mat and wall Pilates up until recently. I'm also planning to launch branded fitness equipment. Lots of exciting stuff is happening at Sweaty Studio!
