New Zealand born pianist/composer Mike Nock is one of the acknowledged masters of jazz in Australasia. His reputation rests partly on his imposing international experience which includes ... twenty-five years working in the USA with many of the world's top jazz musicians such as: Coleman Hawkins, Yusef Lateef, Dionne Warwick, Michael Brecker, etc... a large catalogue of critically acclaimed, internationally released recordings his role as leader of the 1970's seminal jazz-rock group The Fourth Way a substantial body of original compositions in print and on recordings

A versatile and thoughtful saxophonist and composer, Tim Ries has collaborated with such jazz artists as Phil Woods, Tom Harrell, Al Foster, John Patitucci, Dave Liebman, Danilo Perez, Maynard Ferguson, Red Garland, Badal Roy, Maria Schneider and Donald Byrd. A Verve release with The Joe Henderson Big Band won a Grammy Award. Having just returned from a second world tour with the Rolling Stones playing saxophone, keyboard and organ, his other recording and performance credits include work with such diverse talents as Donald Fagen, Paul Simon, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, Stevie Wonder, Incognito, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Belden and David Lee Roth.

James Morrison’s career thus far has been diverse and perhaps not typical of most jazz musicians. He recorded “Jazz Meets the Symphony” with The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lalo Schifrin, performed concerts at the Royal Albert hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for Princess Anne. Royal command performances on two occasions for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and for US Presidents Bush & Clinton at Parliament House in Australia. In 1997, James was recognised for his service to the arts in Australia and awarded a medal of The Order of Australia.

Having already released five original jazz compact discs, Tim now will channel his energy into creating interpretations of rock and roll standards. The music of Jagger and Richards, Tim’s recent employers, serves as the inspiration for his most recent recording project, soon to be completed.

Pianist Joe Chindamo has appeared on over 60 film soundtracks, has toured the world 15 times with Billy Cobham and has recorded and performed with a wide variety of renowned international artists that include Ray Brown, the Brecker Bros., Ernie Watts, Lee Konitz, Shirley Bassey and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

Pascal Schumacher starts his studies as a percussionist at the classical music department of the Conservatoire de Musique de la Ville de Luxembourg (L) and obtains the Prix Supérieur in 1999. From 1997 on he studies with jazz vibraphone player Guy Cabay, first at the jazz department of the Conservatoire de Luxembourg, where he obtains the Prix Supérieur with distinction in 2001, later at the jazz department of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles (B), where he obtains a bachelor degree in June 2003. In 2005 he graduates then at Koninklijk Conservatorium of The Hague (NL) with Frits Landesbergen (master) He also receives a master’s degree of musicology at the Université Marc Bloch de Strasbourg (F) in 2002. Pascal also followed master classes and workshops with Gary Burton, Mike Manieri, David Friedman, Stefon Harris, Franck Tortiller, Wolfgang Lackerschmid, Jean Geoffroy, Charles Loos, Scott Prebys… In 1995, he co-founds the ensemble Interchange with saxophonist Nadine Kauffmann. In 1998, he receives the „IKB Jugend-Förderpreis“. In 1999, he is laureate of the Prix Norbert Stelmes des Jeunesses Musicales Luxembourg. In 2001, he is cofounder of the experimental percussion group Stroke X. From 2001 to 2003 he coleads Greg Lamy - Pascal Schumacher Quartet. In 2004, Pascal Schumacher wins with his quartet the First Prize as well as the Public Prize at the famous Tremplin Jazz Avignon (F). In October 2005, Pascal receives the Belgium Jazz Trophy Django d’Or in the category “New Talent”.

With strong influences from Keith Jarrett’s 1980’s work, MCA Freedman Fellowship winner pianist/composer Andrea Keller won her first ARIA [Australian equivalent of a GRAMMY] in 2002 . This was followed with her CD, Thirteen Sketches where Keller also won both the 2003 ARIA Award and inaugural Bell Award for Best Jazz Album for her Bartok Project's Mikrokosmos CD (on ABC).

As a result of his win in the 2003 White Foundation World Sax Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival, tenor saxophonist Jamie Oehlers was based in the U.K. in 2004 to take advantage of various opportunities flowing from the win.

Aaron was born in Papua New Guinea in 1982. His early years were spent playing in the village, fishing, eating mangos, coconuts and mud crabs. At an early age Aaron was exposed to a wide range of music from traditional Motuan mourning chants, to the songs sung around the table at Passover, to Beethoven, Brahms and Bach played to him by his grandfather.

Initially self taught, drummer Allan Browne has worked extensively with Peter Gaudion, Geoff Kitchen, Ken Shroeder, Vince Jones, Barney Mc All, Steve Grant and Paul Grabowsky's Trio and Quintet.

Simultaneously he led the contemporary jazz group Onaje, which was selected to represent Australia at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival in 1992.

The personnel of Eugene Ball (trumpet), Ian Whitehurst (tenor sax) and Joe Talia(drums) performed material from the quartet's 2005 ARIA nominated album 'Angels and Rascals' on the ABC. In July 2004, his Quartet toured the European jazz festival circuit, including support for Pat Metheny at the Montreux, and the BBC Radio 3 London Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott's. Based in Melbourne once again, Jamie is joined by fellow journeyman, trumpeter Scott Tinkler for an exciting project band sure to blow the minds of all that hear it.

At the age of 12, Aaron was living in Melbourne, and discovered the blues. Within a year he was playing piano regularly in blues clubs around Melbourne with some of Melbourne's finest players: Paul Neuendorf, Andy Baylor and Ian Collard. Aaron also played regularly in the trio of legendary drummer, Allan Browne at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club featuring Aaron's original compositions. It was at Bennetts Lane in early 2003 that New York saxophonist Tim Ries, in Melbourne for the Rolling Stones tour, discovered Aaron playing. Tim was so impressed that they played together in Melbourne and Tim encouraged Aaron to come to New York to record with some of New York's finest jazz players, James Genus (bass), Clarence Penn (drums) and Scott Wendholdt (trumpet). Aaron travelled to New York, writing tunes for the occasion based on his impressions of that city.

Also in demand as an accompanist, Allan has worked with over 35 International Jazz icons including Milt Jackson, Jay Mc Shann, Herb Ellis, Phil Woods, Al Cohn, Plas Johnson, Jimmy Witherspoon, Art Hodes, Barney Kessel, Urbie Green, Buddy Tate, Joe Newman, Mal.Waldren, Johnny Griffin, Scott Hamilton, Wild Bill Davidson, Urbie Green, Ronnie Scott, Charlie Bird, Ralph Sutton, Sheilah Jordan, Red Holloway, Emily Remla and Richie Cole. In November 2000 he received the prestigious Don Banks Award for his contribution to Australian music. This grant of $60,000.00 by the Australia Council has only been awarded to one other jazz musician since its inception

In 1986 Jex supported Dizzy Gillespie at Melbourne's Dallas Brookes Hall and his trio was selected to be the support act for legendary jazz vocalist Betty Carter's performance in June '95. Residing in London, June '87 to July '88, Jex played a year long solo piano residency, as well as presenting his trio with Steve Rose, bass, and Winston Clifford, drums, at the original Jazz Café, Newington Green. Spending the last three months of 1995 in New York, Jex took formal lessons with Joanne Brackeen and Don Friedman, among others, and lessons by way of example from Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, John Hicks, Cedar Walton, Marilyn Crispell, Bobby Hutcherson, Dr. John, the Meters, the Skatalites.

Peter is a Melbourne based trumpeter, composer and educator. He features as a sideman on over 20 albums in a variety of genres, and on numerous film soundtracks.

Tim is an Australian based saxophonist, woodwind instrumentalist and composer, who has performed, toured, and recorded with a broad range of artists and ensembles including Ray Charles, Olivia Newton John, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australian Show Band, Blowfish, Mike Nock, Bennetts Lane Big Band, Tom Burlinson, Russell Morris, Los Cabrones, and The Badloves.

1995 National Jazz Saxophone Award winner Julien Wilson has been referred to as "one of the most exciting musicians in the country" (Sydney critic John Shand) and "almost everyone's favourite side-man" (Joe Chindamo). Wilson's original and thoughtful compositions are inspired and informed by his extensive studies in the U.S. with George Garzone and the legendary George Russell.

The move to Melbourne provided much professional experience, with Leigh proving to be a popular accompanist for the cream of the Australian contemporary Jazz scene, frequently appearing with Jamie Oehlers, Dale Barlow, Scott Tinkler, Julien Wilson, Mark and Nichaud Fitzgibbon, Alison Wedding, Heather Stewart and many others.

In January 2004 Leigh travelled to the US for five weeks, where he pursued formal studies with bassists Ben Wolfe, Eric Revis and Reginald Veal, as well as spending valuable time with mentors Branford Marsalis and Doug Wamble.

Freshly returned from 3 months in New York and Poland (after receiving the Special Award from MCA-Freedman Foundation in 2004), Simmons (multiple saxes, flutes, Shakuhachi and the Slavic Fujara) re-unites with all-original ASQ members Andrew Ogburn (piano) Simon Starr (bass) and Matt Earl (drums) for some feisty and delicate music.

"By definition, free improvisation can be anything. Strange then, that many practitioners eschew the options of tonality, rhythm and coherent melody. Not Melbourne's Paper Hat. Pianist Colin Hopkins, bassist Frank DiSario and drummer Andrew Gander went into the studio last winter with no plans or preconceptions and spontaneously composed nine "conversations" of arresting lyricism and radiance. They spend no time hunting for ideas, collectively zeroing in on the first statement of a piece and grabbing it by the throat - however delicately. Bassist, composer and bandleader Leigh Barker was born and raised in Canberra, where he spent his formative years studying with American bassist Eric Ajaye at the Canberra School of Music.

Last year Leigh collaborated with celebrated pianist Tom Vincent on the soundtrack for the hit ABC television program 'The Collectors', which airs on Friday nights. Vincent and Barker discovered an immediate rapport which culminated in a six-week tour early in 2006 with the Tom Vincent Trio, with pianist Vincent and Netherlands based drummer, Marc Meader.

With improvisation qualifications from the Victorian College of the Arts and armed with a composition masters from Monash University, Jenny Game-Lopata is a formidable talent in the Melbourne jazz scene, performing her own works, playing soprano and tenor saxophones was well as leading her own ensemble.

Saxophonist Aaron Searle has been a professional musician in Melbourne for the past decade. He performs regularly with well known Australian bands such as The Pearly Shells, The Grand Wazoo and Grupo Bahia, and has appeared with legends of the Australian musical theatre such as Rhonda Burchmore, Chloë Dallimore, Marina Prior, Marty Fields, and Peter Cousins.

Daniel Gassin began playing piano at age three and received classical tuition (most notably from Gloria Chambers) until the age of 10. Daniel then switched to jazz and received regular tuition for the next six years, primarily from Helen Jowsey.

Pianist Ben Winkelman has taken seemingly disparate influences and melded them - via his original compositions - into an unique trio approach and sound. They have all-original repertoire, some of which includes contemporary reinterpretations of stride and early jazz (such as Jelly Roll Morton); others are based on Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms; some incorporate elements of Argentinean tango and contemporary classical music. The result is a dynamic and exciting meeting between the traditional and the innovative, and a balance between the structure of arrangements and the freedom of improvisation.

Jenny formed the Jenny Game Quartet (as it was then known) in 1993 to perform her original contemporary jazz compositions. Since then, she has managed and lead the ensemble on tenor and soprano saxophones.

Aaron’s debut CD Over Nine Waves was released in 2004 to critical acclaim. The Australian Financial Review says, “Searle plays superbly - most musicians would be happy simply to deploy such fine tenor sax as he plays, but he offers much more than that.” (Shane Nichols)

In 2002-2003 Daniel spent seven months in Paris and performed at a number of venues such as Studio des Islettes, Haynes’ Bar, Le Baiser Salé and le Franc Pinot. The European experience had a significant impact on him musically, and this can be heard in his recent compositions.

Daniel’s musical style is characterised by a strong melodic sense in his improvisation coupled with a solid technique. Aside from the European sound, he cites Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett as his major influences.

Aaron performs on all saxophones, flutes and clarinets and composes music has been described as possessing “beautiful poise and vitality”. (The Age)

Daniel performs widely in various ensembles, including his own trio. He has played with many of Melbourne’s top jazz musicians, including Jamie Oehlers, Alison Wedding, Christophe Genoux, Nick Haywood and David Rex.

Paul has been involved with music since the tender age of six. He began playing woodwind instruments in high school and continued to study music at the Victorian College Of The Arts and even pursued further study in New York.

Singer/songwriter Martin Breeze started his musical education growing up in Adelaide, South Australia listening to his parents’ diverse musical tastes.

Recipient of the Gibson-May award in the 2006 London International Jazz Competition, expatriate American vocalist Alison Wedding has built an impressive reputation among both musicians and the public in the years she has been based here, with many weekends residencies at Bennetts Lane.

Darrin Archer has gained a reputation as a formidable pianist and composer both in Melbourne and Sydney. Originally from Melbourne, he studied jazz piano with Mike Nock and Judy Bailey at the N.S.W. Conservatorium of Music. Since then he worked with many leading artists, as well as bands under his own name. Archer has recorded various albums under other leaders, and released his own debut album of originals.

Belinda Moody is a Victorian College of the Arts graduate and passionate jazz bassist and composer who has gained much international experience living at home and abroad over the past 20 years. Those home bases have included Melbourne, Amsterdam, Singapore and since 2003, Tokyo.

An experienced singer and performer, Margot Leighton has been dedicated to her craft for over 30 years.

In 1990 he studied improvised music at Adelaide University that leaned heavily towards bebop. He played with a number of jazz groups whilst studying such as the ‘Angry Penguins’ and more notably ‘Hothouse’ with tenor saxophonist Andy Sugg. In 1992 Martin moved to Melbourne and performed with artists like Joe Chindamo, Allan Browne, Stephen Magnusson, Sam Keevers, Bob Sedergreen, James Sherlock, Niko Schauble among many others. He has performed at a number of festivals both nationally and internationally and was a regular guest on daytime TV’s “Good Morning Australia” with Bert Newton. In 1996 he was a finalist in The National Jazz Competition for vocalists and went on to do a string of live to air recordings with the ABC. By 2006 Martin was invited to perform as one of 12 finalists worldwide for the London International Jazz Competition for vocalists.

Originally from Ohio, Alison's album 'The Secret' won the 'Best Jazz Vocal Album' at the 2004 Bell Awards. One of her career highlights was singing with the One O'clock Lab Band with the late Gerry Mulligan. After receiving her bachelor's degree, she spent a summer at Epcot in Florida, singing in the show Swingin' Summer Nights,where she had the opportunity to sing with an amazing line up of singers such as Dianne Reeves, Diane Schuur, and the late Joe Williams. Alison then decided to move to the west coast to develop her career. While in Los Angeles, Alison performed professionally, both live and in the studio. She toured as a back-up singer with Kevyn Lettau, and recorded with artists such as Andy Summers (formerly of The Police) on his CD Peggy's Blue Sklight. Since her national tour, Alison was invited to sing with Tim Ries (saxophone player with The Rolling Stones) at the 2004 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

"Archer's instrumental tunes tend to have a strong melodic focus, with moods ranging from gentle lyricism to spikily energetic swing." Jessica Nicholas, The Age Darrin has recorded various albums under other leaders, including an album recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, as part of S.A.J.A. (the Scandinavian Australian Jazz Alliance). He won the Jazz Action Society Composition competition in 1996, and was a finalist in the 2003 MusicOz songwriting competition (Jazz Category). Darrin has also written the music for short films such as “Karaoke” (by Luke Eve: he was the winner of Tropfest 2005), and “Apprentice” (Dustin Fenely).

This has afforded her the opportunity to perform with many extraordinary musicians including: Alan Lee, Jex Saarelaht, Luluk Purwanto and Rene Van Helsdingen, Han Bennik, Tobias Delius, Jeremy Monteiro, Terumasa Hino, James Moody, Ernie Watts, Carmen Bradford and Christine Sullivan. It featured some of Melbourne's finest talent in Ronny Ferella, Peter Jones, Julien Wilson, Nadje Noordhuis and Michelle Nicolle. Last settled in Japan,(2003) Belinda made new connections with some of the finest musicians in the country while still maintaining an international agenda. Regular trips to Thailand to perform with the Jeremy Monteiro Trio and special guests continue as do recordings with the trio.

More than just a singer Margot is a passionate and professional musician, committed to furthering her ability and knowledge. With a BA Music Industry (RMIT), a Diploma of Education in Classroom and Instrumental Music (Melbourne) and a Dip Music Performance (NMIT) her qualifications cover many areas. Experience in Television, Radio, Recording, Musicals and Stage testify to her versatility as a performer. Margot is a resident vocalist with the esstee Big Band; one of Melbourne's fine jazz big bands. She performs regularly in a variety of ensembles including a capella ensembles as well as trios and quartets, playing with some of Melbourne's finest musicians including The Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra. She has sung the National Anthem at Olympic Park before a packed stadium.

"Epic Whispers" is a new project led by Belinda Moody, joining the sympathetic vibration of strings, wood and voices, the harmony of ideas and emotions, the charm of telling tales. A rhythm section, string quartet and voices weave their way through a set of arrangements and compositions by Belinda Moody and Steve Smith.

Having walked on stage together over 1700 times in the past seventeen years the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) has established itself among the world-class chamber ensembles of its generation. In 1992, they won both the Banff International String Quartet Competition and Young Concert Artists International Auditions, launching them on a performing career that has brought them across North and South America, Europe and Asia.

Recognized as one of the world's premiere string quartets, the Takács Quartet plays with a virtuosic technique, intense immediacy and consistently burnished tone.

The Tankstream Quartet comprising four of Australia’s most brilliant and versatile young musicians – Sophie Rowell and Anne Horton (violinists), Sally Boud (violist), and Rachel Johnston (cellist) – holds the distinction of having won more international chamber music competitions than any other ensemble in Australian history.

il Giardino Armonico, founded in Milan in 1985, brings together a number of graduates from some of Europe’s leading colleges of music, all of whom have specialised in playing on period instruments. Many of its members are also in demand as international soloists and have appeared in concert with such eminent artists as N. Harnoncourt, G. Leonhardt, T. Pinnock, Ch. Coin and J. Savall. The ensemble’s repertory is concentrated in the main on the 17th and 18th centuries. Depending on the demands of each programme, the group will consist of anything from 3 to 30 musicians.

Born in Israel in 1978, Mr. Aner has performed as a soloist with Israel’s leading orchestras, including performances with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta.

Having been privileged to study with the Emerson, Tokyo and Juilliard String Quartets the St. Lawrence, are themselves passionate educators. Since 1998 they have held the position of Ensemble in Residence at Stanford University. Alex Ross of The New Yorker Magazine writes, "the St. Lawrence are remarkable not simply for the quality of their music making, exalted as it is, but for the joy they take in the act of connection."

The Takács Quartet was formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest by Gabor Takács-Nagy, Károly Schranz, Gabor Ormai and András Fejér, while all four were students. It first received international attention in 1977, winning First Prize and the Critics' Prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. The Quartet has also won the Gold Medal at the 1978 Portsmouth and Bordeaux Competitions and First Prizes at the Budapest International String Quartet Competition in 1978 and the Bratislava Competition in 1981. The Quartet made its North American debut tour in 1982. Violinist Edward Dusinberre joined the Quartet in 1993 and violist Roger Tapping in 1995. Of the original ensemble, violinist Károly Schranz and cellist András Fejér remain. In 2001, The Takács Quartet was awarded the Order of Merit of the Knight's Cross of the Republic of Hungary.

They won First Prize at the 2005 Cremona International String Quartet Competition. They also won the 2001 Australian Chamber Music Competition, and then went on to win the Gold Medal in the 2002 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition (Japan). In 2004 they were the 2nd Prize Winner in the Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition in Italy and in 2003 the Quartet won the 3rd Prize and the Audience and Listeners’ Choice Awards at the 4th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.Based in Germany, they are mentored by the Alban Berg String Quartet at the Cologne Hochschule. They were also selected by the Australian Government to perform the official music at the Danish Royal Wedding in May 2004. Formed in 2000 and originally mentored by Alice Waten, they have also received guidance from members of the Amadeus, Hagen and Smetana Quartets. Since late 2006 they have become the new Australian String Quartet.

As a member of the Tel Aviv Trio, he has won prizes at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in Australia, the Citta di Trapani and the Vittorio Gui International Chamber Music Competitions in Italy, the Joseph Joachim and the ErstKlassik Competitions in Germany and the European Chamber Music Competition in France. Genevieve Lacey is acclaimed as a recorder virtuoso. She performs repertoire spanning ten centuries, collaborating on projects as diverse as her medieval duo with Poul Høxbro and her contemporary role in Elision/John Rodgers’/Justine Cooper’s video opera Tulp.

Natsuko Yoshimoto – Violin Natsuko studied violin from the age of 11 at the YehudiA Menuhin School under Lord Menuhin and Wen Zhou Li. She received scholarships at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and won the Gold Medal on the 1994 Shell/London Symphony Orchestra.

The outstanding Australian musician Richard Tognetti was appointed as Artistic Director and Lead Violin in 1990. Under his inspiring leadership, the ACO has performed as a flexible and versatile ‘ensemble of soloists’, on modern and period instruments, as a small chamber group, a small symphony orchestra, and as an electro-acoustic collective. In a nod to past traditions, only the cellists are seated – the resulting sense of energy and individuality is one of the most commented-upon elements of an ACO concert experience.

The group features six of Australia’s leading musicians. Director and clarinettist Paul Dean and bassoonist Leesa Dean are former Principal players with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and now freelance throughout Australia. Tania Frazer was formerly the Principal Oboist of the Israel Symphony Orchestra, moving to Australia to play with the Soloists. Lyric soprano Margaret Schindler and horn player Peter Luff are lecturers at Griffith University’s Queensland Conservatorium whilst pianist Kevin Power pursues a freelance career and is Chorus Master of the Queensland Choir.

The Benaud Trio rose to national prominence after winning the prestigious Piano Trio prize at the 2005 Australian Chamber Music Competition. The Benaud’s have been playing together in various duo and trio combinations over the last three years. The Trio members share many common interests including a love for chamber music, Chinese food and an eagerness to break out the cricket bat at any opportunity. Between them, the members of the Benaud Trio have accumulated an impressive number of chamber music awards and have studied with numerous prominent musicians and ensembles including: the Takacs Quartet, the Henschel Quartet, the Petersen Quartet, Mark Mogilevski, Marco van Pagee and William Hennessy.

She appears as concerto soloist (with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, multiple Symphony Australia Orchestras) and works internationally as a solo recitalist.

James Cuddeford – Violin Brisbane-born James attended the Yehudi Menuhin School in England in his early teens, later studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. His principal teachers were Lord Menuhin, Wen Zhou Li and Gyorgy Kurtág. James has won numerous awards for both performance and composition including First Prize in the Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition in Holland.

Jeremy Williams – Viola Jeremy graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with distinction, where he studied with David Takeno before becoming the youngest violinist accepted by the London Symphony Orchestra. He has performed under conductors such as Abbado, Svetlanov, Previn and Celibidache and performed regularly with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and London Sinfonietta Peter Rejto – Cello Peter has appeared as a soloist in hundreds of performances throughout the USA with the Los Angeles Piano Quartet of which he was a founding member. Johanna Selleck Selleck is a composer, flautist and writer. She teaches at Melbourne University and the Victorian College of the Arts, works at the Centre for Studies in Australian Music and is currently completing a PhD in composition. She has composed a wide range of chamber, orchestral and electronic works. Her works have been performed by the Queensland, Tasmanian and Melbourne Symphony orchestras. She performed the solo part of her flute concerto Unspoken Dialogues with the Melbourne Symphony in a recording at the Iwaki Auditorium in 2003. Commissions have included works for Ensemble Zauberflöte, Melbourne Grammar, Melbourne University, the Cairnmillar Institute, Melbourne Youth Music, Astra and the Port Fairy Spring Festival. Her first opera, The Quickening, received its premiere at the Port Fairy Festival in October 1998 and was published by the Centre for Studies in Australian Music in 2001. Her piano quartet Looking Back was selected for performance at Maltese Australian Culture Week in Malta in January 2004. In 1990 Selleck was awarded the Percy Grainger Prize for Composition and in 2006 she was awarded First Prize in the 2006 Albert H. Maggs Composition Award.

Jouissance was formed in 1993 to explore a dialogue between Medieval and Byzantine chant, and contemporary culture.

Silo String Quartet was founded by Cellist and Composer Caerwen Martin in 1998. Silo has performed regularly at the Melbourne International Jazz Festivals and Melbourne International Women in Jazz Festivals since 1999 working with such artists as Fiona Burnett, Belinda Moody, Antonio Tenace, David Chisholm and Quinsin Nachoff (Canada) and was the resident string quartet for the Federation Music Week International Composers Forum. Silo are currently recording a CD for the Federation of Australian Composers that showcases the best of Australia’s new string quartets. This year Silo have recorded a CD for the Sydney Dance Company entitled Origami, composed by David Chisholm. Silo also feature on the live ABC CD Soaring at Dawn for Jazz trio and String Quartet composed by soprano saxophonist Fiona Burnett. Recent work has included performing at Glen Eira Town Hall, Billilla House, Stonington Manor, Melba Hall, Bennetts Lane and Federation Square as well as many recording and performance projects for composers and popular artists including Dan Brodie, Millionaire Souls, CC Martini, Philip Gelbach and Johanna Selleck. Silo has broadcast live on ABC and Melbourne radio stations and features on Caerwen Martin's new soundtrack to the Australian feature film 'Lost and Found’ by David Blake.

Recognised as one of Australia's premiere ensembles, Duo Sol, comprising Caroline Almonte (piano) and Miki Tsunoda (violin) perform with exhilarating energy, technical virtuosity and great sensuality, creating a remarkable rapport with the audience. The ensemble has established a unique identity by creating innovative programs coupled with musical integrity. The Duo has been described as 'exhilarating', 'spontaneous and full of life' and with a 'creamy sound that seduces the audience'.

A performer of great versatility, the distinguished soprano Merlyn Quaife has performed opera, oratorio, Lieder, chamber music and contemporary music to great acclaim throughout Australia and Europe. She has also performed as soloist with the Singapore Symphony and the Voronesz Philharmonic in Russia. Merlyn has appeared with all the State Opera Companies in roles ranging from the bel canto Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor to the minimalist Chiang Ch'ing in Nixon in China. She has performed with all the Symphony Australia orchestras, featured in repertoire of every conceivable style from Handel to Ligeti, as well as recorded a number of CDs including Aria for John Edward Eyre by David Lumsdaine which won her a Sounds Australia Award.

Andrián Pertout was born in Santiago, Chile, 17 October, 1963, and lived in Gorizia, Northern Italy for several years before finally settling in Melbourne, Australia in 1972. Over the years he has work as a film composer [East Meets West (1984), Ibrahim (1984), The Murray River Quest (1985), Hope Street (1987) and The Australian Ballet (1990)]; performer, producer, arranger and writer (numerous music publications).

The Tailem Quartet formed in 2002 as part of the University of Melbourne’s chamber music program. Since then they have twice been a finalist in the University’s Chamber Music Competition and have performed at a number of Faculty of Music events including its Lunch Hour Concert Series and Gala Concert. In 2004 the quartet performed at the Melbourne International Brass Festival with American trombonist Jim Pugh.

Composition awards include the Betty Amsden Award – 2005 3MBS FM National Composer Awards, First Prize in the 2004 ISU Contemporary Music Festival/Louisville Orchestra Composition Competition (Indiana, USA), Judges' and Audience Prize of the 2003 Oare String Orchestra Third International ‘Music for Strings’ Composing Competition (Faversham, UK), 2002 Michelle Morrow Memorial Award for Composition, and the 2002 Zavod Jazz/Classical Fusion Award.

In July 2005 the Tailem Quartet was a finalist in the 3rd Australian Chamber Music Competition where they performed to critical acclaim in both final rounds.

Duo Sol is the first Australian ensemble to have won first prize at Italy's prestigious International Chamber Music Competition, 'Premio Trio di Trieste' in 1999, resulting in a highly successful series of concert tours throughout Italy and South America. Other awards include being finalists at the ARD in Munich, 'Vittorio Gui' Florence, and at the Trapani International competitions. Artistic Director and leader of the Sunwrae Ensemble, Rae Howell, is a Melbourne-based composer and performer on piano and vibraphone. She works regularly as a multi-instrumentalist (also on trumpet and mellophone) and performs as a guest artist crossing various genres in live performance, recording and international touring.

Guitar - Nick Freer - Internationally, Nick has performed through Germany with the Marinucci Trio (1999), Hong Kong with the Toby Mac Quartet (2000), Hong Kong and Macau with the Julie O Hara Quintet (2001) and the Anton Delleca Trio (2001) Hong Kong and China with his own trio (2001), China with Martin Breeze Trio (2002) and Thailand with Avatar (2005). VIPs Nick has played for include former U.S. president Bill Clinton (Crown Casino), Rupert Murdoch (Hong Kong) and Kerry Packer (Crown Casino). In 2004 Nick completed Post Graduate studies in Music Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) graduating with honours.

Xanya Mamunya studied in the United States at the Cleveland Institute of Music with the world’s leading teacher of Salzedo Technique - Alice Chalifoux. Xanya returned to Australia to take up the position Principal Harp in the Tasmanian Symphony.

Howell was a finalist in the 2006 APRA Professional Development Awards and is a represented composer of Cantilena Music in London, UK. Howell has been a Musician in Residence at The Banff Centre in Alberta Canada, and The Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida USA. She has worked with jazz musician/composer and Blue Note Records Artist Sam Rivers (USA), Royal Society of Arts Fellow and composer/percussionist Eugene Skeef (Sth Africa/UK) and currently works by correspondance in an ongoing electronic recording project with engineer Jon Cohrs (USA), in 'Rabbits without Spleens'.

Xanya augmented in the Melbourne Symphony for many years and also played in the Symphony Orchestras of Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra, Orchestra Victoria, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Pops Orchestra and the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra. She has played with touring companies such as the Bolshoi and Russian Ballet, and with shows including ‘Phantom of the Opera’ under Brian Stacey. Xanya has also played Chamber Music with various ensembles including the PM Trio with Merllyn Quaife & Grania Bourke.

Tahu Matheson studied his Master of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music under Oleg Stepanov.At 20 years of age Tahu made his first public performance at The New Zealand International Festival of Arts performing Rachmaninov’s Preludes Opus 23 and the world premier of Ten Modern Concert Studies by New Zealand composer Edwin Carr. Standing an imposing 6’ 7” tall and with the same hand-span as Rachmaninov, this exceptionally gifted musician has toured as soloist for Musica Viva in Australia and Chamber Music New Zealand.

Mossie Scanlon, now resident in Melbourne, Australia, is from the Dingle Peninsula in the Kerry Gaeltacht, and anybody familiar with the distinctive style of singing from that part of Munster will know what I'm talking about when I say he is the quintessential master of the technique.

Well versed in the art of Rhythm tap dance, West African drum and dance and jazz vocals, Shonah Honeyhill Sonko is a sensational talent.

Heather grew up in the Riverina and learnt violin, piano and sang from an early age. She graduated with Honours from The University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in 2001.

Speak have become Melbourne’s best percussion ensemble. They are strong supporters of new music and have appeared in everything from experimental hybrid-arts projects to regular music festival concerts.

Also in 2001, Heather lead Good Vibes Quintet for six months, performed with Zoot Suit then left Australia to travel, study and perform in the UK and Europe. Heather set up and performed a gig at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival, she undertook masterclasses with Sheila Jordon and Cameron Brown, Barry Harris, the Guild Hall Summer School, studied voice with Nicholas Powell, sang in professional performances with Opera Del Mar and took part in Jam sessions all over London.

Speak has collaborated with choreographers, installation artists and dancers and has commissioned many new percussion works by local and international composers. Their concerts are among the most exciting you will ever experience in Melbourne.

Acclaimed for his musical lyricism and rich compositional approach, fingerstyle guitarist and composer, Lucas Michailidis was winner of the International 'Open Strings' guitar competition in Germany 2001. The win landed him a recording contract with Acoustic Music Records and a solo spot at the 2002 festival.

Multi award-winning ZULYA KAMALOVA is the leading proponent of Tatar music in Australia as well as one of the most versatile and accomplished vocalists on the world music scene today. A native of Volga-Kama region of Central Russia, ZULYA began performing Russian and Tatar songs at the age of 9. Later she studied music and languages at university level. Inspired by the diversity of cultures, she made a dramatic decision to settle in Australia in 1991 and began to not only share her traditional music with Australians, but to explore the musical and linguistic riches of the multitude of cultures living in Australia. As a result, ZULYA has developed a totally original approach as an affirmation of her unique identity - an affirmation that takes her Tatar and Russian background to totally new places and in completely new ways.

He is blessed with a most musical and pleasing voice, and his choice of songs in Gaelic and English suit him down to the ground; they will have wide appeal for the listener regardless of their own background and musical taste.

With Jane's playing he is just as relaxed when he sings in sean nós unaccompanied.

As individual players the members of Speak Percussion are highly renowned artists and pedagogues. As an ensemble, they will set both your heart and your ears on fire.

Since returning Heather has been involved in many music projects including Victorian and NSW Jazz/Blues festivals, improvised music in the Sunrae Ensemble, Turkish Folk Music and in 2004 completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in vocal performance at VCA studying with Michelle Nicole and Andrea Keller.

Michailidis has had music published by American fingerstyle authority - John Stropes as part of the 'Great Compositions by Emerging Artists' series. Stropes is associated with the likes of Leo Kotke, Michael Hedges and Alex Degrassi. Michailidis has performed extensively throughout Australia and abroad and is also regular member of The Children of the Underground, the ensemble led by acclaimed Tartarstan singer Zulya. Together they have toured Europe on several occasions, performed at all major Australian festivals and released the highly successful Waltz of Emptiness - winner of the 2005 National Archive Award which enjoyed a top - ten ranking in the European World Music charts. The 1997 release of Journey highlights his work as a skilled and accomplished jazz musician/composer and features original jazz - inspired material for larger ensemble.

He is also fortunate in his choice of accompanist, Cath Connelly, harpist. She knows what is required, which is to make the accompaniment complement the singer's performance, not override it or lead it.

Her tap dancing credentials are long and include studies with Dein Perry, Brenda Bufalino, Grant Swift and Jason Samuels Smith in New York. In 2000, Shonah spent an intensive two weeks in New York at The Broadway Dance Centre attending back to back classes with some of New York’s finest tap dance artists. As a tap artist, Shonah has developed her own choreography and approaches to teaching tap techniques and is committed to further developing the art form in Australia.

Zulya has independently produced four albums to date, including the ARIA-nominated elusive (2002) and, together with her band The Children of the Underground, 2004's magical The Waltz of Emptiness (and Other Songs on Russian Themes). Although she is well-known in Australia, Zulya's performances of her gorgeous blend of traditional and original music have recently been enchanting audiences from Serbia to Siberia, Luxembourg to Moscow, Tatarstan to Helsinki and almost everywhere in between.

Charles Dutoit has been Music Director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal since 1977. Their musical partnership is recognised today as one of the most successful in the world. In September 1990, Charles Dutoit also became Music Director of the Orchestre National de France, replacing Lorin Maazel. In September 1996 he was also appointed Principal Conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. In addition to his summer activities with the OSM, Charles Dutoit is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of two of North America's most prestigious summer festivals: the Philadelphia Orchestra¹s concert series at the Mann Music Centre in Philadelphia and at the Saratoga Performing Arts Centre in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Carl first rose to prominence as a composer of music for classical dance, with over 20 scores to his credit. More recently he has emerged as a major orchestral composer with six symphonies and seven concertos heading the catalogue. He has a substantial catalogue of chamber music, complemented by various work for film, television and theatre. Although primarily a composer of modern 'art' music, he has undertaken such diverse tasks as arranging the Australian National Anthem and writing music for the Closing Ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In his role as Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia, Carl is also the new Artistic Director of the Huntington Estate Music Festival, Australia's most prestigious and successful annual chamber music festival.

Australian composer and viola player Brett Dean studied in Brisbane, graduating from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 1982 as Student of the Year. He began composing in 1988 while still a member of the Berlin Philharmonicís viola section, firstly making largely improvised film scores and radio projects for the ABC in Australia and various independent film-makers.

Charles Dutoit has received numerous awards and distinctions. He holds honorary doctorates from both the Université de Montréal and the Université Laval. In 1982, Charles Dutoit was named 'Musician of the Year' by the Canadian Music Council; in 1988, the same organisation awarded Maestro Dutoit the Canadian Music Council Medal in recognition of his exceptional contribution to music in Canada. Also in 1988, the government of France made Charles Dutoit an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 1991, Charles Dutoit was made an Honorary Citizen of the city of Philadelphia. In June 1994, the Canadian Conference of the Arts awarded Maestro Dutoit their Diploma of Honour for distinguished service to the arts in Canada.

"Mike Nock is an international treasure" – Jazz Times (USA) Recipient of three US National Endowment Fellowships for composition ( 1972, 1975 & 1978 ) in 1999 he was awarded a two year Australian Arts Council Fellowship. A particularly fruitful relationship with the Australian Chamber Orchestra has resulted in four major works so far including one of Brett’s most frequently performed scores, Carlo, inspired by the music of Carlo Gesualdo. Brett also wrote the music for Czech choreographer Jiri Kylian’s highly acclaimed 3 act ballet One of a Kind which, since its premiere in The Hague in May 1998, has been performed more than 40 times throughout the world by the Nederlands Dans Theater. His first orchestral work, Ariel’s Music, a clarinet concerto written for his brother Paul, was honoured as the prizewinning Selected Work of the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Paris in June 1999. In 2001, he won one of Australia’s most revered awards, the Paul Lowin Song Cycle Prize, for Winter Songs. Brett is the Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music. He first gained international recognition by winning 2nd prize in the 1994 World Piano Competition in London with his performance of Rakhmaninov's Third Piano Concerto. Still in his early thirties, he is Professor of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music, and in 2003 won major awards from the Royal Philharmonic Society and ‘The South Bank Show’. A pupil of Ryszard Bakst and Joan Havill, Paul Lewis studied at Chetham’s School of Music and the Guildhall before receiving regular coaching from Alfred Brendel. As a much sought-after chamber musician, he has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Michael Collins and Ernst Kovacic, Katherine Gowers, Adrian Brendel, the Sine Nomine Quartet, and the Leopold String Trio.

The Australian soprano Yvonne (Denise) Kenny received her training at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music in Sydney and at the La Scala Opera School in Milan (1973-1974).

Born in Wales of Irish and Welsh parents, Dennis O'Neill CBE is one of the world's leading tenors and a specialist in the works of Verdi.

Soprano Emma Matthews is a Principal Artist with Opera Australia, for which she made her debut as Damigella in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea in 1993. She is now regarded as one of Australia’s most outstanding sopranos, equally at home with opera and concert repertoire.

Born in Sydney, John Bolton Wood received his music education at the NSW Conservatorium of Music and London Opera Centre. He made his UK debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Bosun in Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd.

She is the recipient of a Mo Award (Classical Performer of the Year, 2004) and a Green Room Award (Best Female Singer in a Title Role, 2004) for her Lulu performances. She has also received three other Green Room Awards for her work in La Clemenza di Tito and Rinaldo, The Marriage of Figaro and Batavia (Best Female Singer in a Supporting Role) and was the recipient of the 1996 Remy Martin Australian Opera Award. Emma is a Bachelor of Music graduate from the West Australian Conservatorium of Music.

John received great acclaim from the public and colleagues alike for his role as Old Deuteronomy in the Australian production and Asian tour of Cats, which he sang for an astounding 1498 performances.

She made her 1975 operatic debut in London in Donizetti's Rosmonda d'Inghilterra. After winning the Kathleen Ferrier Competition the same year, she joined the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where her roles have included Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Ilia (Idomeneo), Oscar (Un Ballo in Maschera), Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro), Adina (L'Elisir d'Amore), Aspasia (Mitridate) and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni).

Yvonne Kenny appears regularly in concert throughout Europe and North America and has appeared at the Edinburgh, Salzburg and Aix-en-Provence Festivals, at Carnegie Hall and is a regular guest at the BBC Promenade concerts. Notable among her most recent engagements are Rosenkavalier in London and Minneapolis, Alcina for the Opéra de Nancy, in addition to L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Falstaff, Rinaldo, Giulio Cesare and Capriccio at Opera Australia. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1989 and last year was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Sydney.

He has enjoyed a long association with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where his many roles have included Rodolfo (La bohème), Duca (Rigoletto), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Macduff (Macbeth), Gustavo (Ballo in Maschera), Foresto (Attila), Otello, Don Carlos, Radames (Aida), Aroldo (in concert), Carlo (Giovanna d’Arco), and Jacopo (I due Foscari). Dennis O'Neill's own television series for the BBC were enormously popular (the accompanying recording went to the top of the classical record charts) and he has subsequently completed a television film on Caruso another featuring famous movie themes. Recent commitments include Tosca for Welsh National Opera, Otello in Brazil, Turandot for Opera Australia, Leopold Halévy’s La Juive for Covent Garden, and Canio for Netherlands Opera, as well as concerts throughout Europe. Dennis O’Neill was awarded the CBE in the 2000 New Year’s Honours list.

Rosario La Spina is one of the finest young tenors to have emerged from within the opera world throughout the last few years. Though born in Australia, his Italian heritage has seen him return to Italy and is now based in Milan. Rosario was trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Australia), and continued his studies at the ‘Royal Northern College of Music’, Manchester under the tutelage of Joseph Ward OBE. He has made guest appearances as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Bern Stadttheater and as soloist in Operatic Galas with the Ulster Orchestra, Belfast and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, Egypt.

Gordon Kerry’s orchestral music has been commissioned by the ABC, BBC, Symphony Australia, Ars Musica Australis and the Australian Youth Orchestra. Most recently he has made a new completion of the Mozart Requiem commissioned by ABC Classic FM and an overture celebrating the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Centenary. His extensive body of chamber music has been commissioned for or premiered by Musica Viva Australia, Wigmore Hall, London as well as independent ensembles in Australia, Germany, the USA, Sweden and Russia.

Paul Dean, a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, is currently enjoying a rapid rise on the international music scene. As a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, he has performed in Norway, England, Germany, Japan, China, New Zealand, Korea, the United States and Canada. Paul has performed concertos with conductors Marcus Stenz, Daniel Harding, Muhai Tang, James MacMillan, Werner Andreas Albert, Paul Mann, Ekkehard Klemm, Olari Elts, Larry Rachleff and Richard Mills. He has premiered over sixty works, many of which have been either written for him or dedicated to him. He was principal clarinet with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra from 1987 to 2000.

Born in 1976 Natsuko won a scholarship to study at the Yehudi Menuhin school in England when she was eleven. She received direct guidance and teaching under the late Lord Menuhin and by the age of thirteen had played a recital at the Purcell Room in London.

Whilst at school she won Second Prize in the Wieniawski Competition (Junior) and Fifth Prize in the Yehudi Menuhin Competition (Junior). She has appeared frequently at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival in Switzerland, and in 1992 she played with Lord Menuhin replacing Vadim Repin at the Bath Mozart Festival.

Later that year, she played in the memorial concert for Lady Fermoy in the presence of the Queen at Buckingham Palace. After leaving the Menuhin School she attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia for a year and then continued her studies with Wen Zhou Li at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where she graduated with a distinction in 1998.

Karin Schaupp has appeared live on television in many parts of the world; in 1997 she performed live as a Special Guest Artist to twenty million viewers and listeners in China, on the occasion of China Radio International's 50th Anniversary celebrations. More recently, Karin Schaupp was invited to join a prestigious line-up of international artists in the opening Gala of the Goodwill Games, which was broadcast live on international television. Karin Schaupp's guitar training began at the age of five and she first performed in public the following year. While still in her teens she won prizes at international competitions in Lagonegro, Italy and Madrid, Spain, where she was also awarded the special competition prize for the Best Interpretation of Spanish Music. Taught almost exclusively by her guitarist mother, Isolde Schaupp, Karin Schaupp completed her tertiary music studies at The University of Queensland with First Class Honours, a Masters degree and was the recipient of a University Gold Medal. Most recently she was awarded the prestigious Music Council of Australia Freedman Fellowship in recognition of her achievements.

After winning the first Prize of the Ensemble Kanazawa Award in 1997, she came to the attention of Hiroyuki Iwaki who subsequently invited her to appear as a soloist in several concerts across Japan with his Ensemble Kanazawa Orchestra.

Rosario has worked with many leading conductors including Renato Palumbo, Bruno Bartoletti, Gary Bertini and Daniele Callegari and directors such as Pier Luigi Pizzi, Graham Vick, Lamberto Pugelli, Hugo De Ana and Jonathan Miller.

Gordon Kerry studied composition with Barry Conyngham at the University of Melbourne, and he has held fellowships from the Australia Council, Peggy Glanville-Hicks Trust and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, USA. He lives on a hill in north-eastern Victoria, Australia.

Having gained first prize in the tenor competition held by L'Accademia di La Scala in 2000, Rosario embarked on the two-year Young Singers’ Course at La Scala, Milan, where he studied with Luciana Serra and Leyla Gencer. This culminated in his La Scala debut as the Messenger in Samson and Delilah, where he appeared with Placido Domingo and Olga Borodina. In 2002, Rosario won first prize in the "Mario Del Monaco International Opera Competition" and made his principal role debut at La Scala as Riccardo in Verdi's Oberto, reprising the role in Genova.

A commitment to his local community has produced new works for Opera in the Alps, the Murray Conservatorium Choirs and Orchestra and the Riverina Summer School for Strings. He has written numerous choral works for ensembles including Sydney Philharmonia, the Prague Chamber Choir and the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic. His opera Medea has been performed in Australia and the USA with Chamber Made Opera and in Germany in several seasons with the Berliner Kammeroper. The most recent of several awards was the 2004 APRA – Australian Music Centre’s Orchestral Work of the Year for This Insubstantial Pageant performed by the WASO.

He’s been called insane, a visionary, and a genius. He’s Wayne Stuart, Australia’s revolutionary piano maker. This feature, narrated by Jana Wendt, unmasks the man behind the instrument and we find out what makes his piano different. Stuart tells us why he felt the piano needed to be rethought to “bring it into the 21st century”, and we discover a remarkable connection between Stuart’s musical past, and his current success.

STELLAVOX gained its international breakthrough with the small Sm 5 that was popular among sound engineers, musicians and film makers all over the world right from the very beginning.

Paul Capsis is one of Australia’s most acclaimed and successful cabaret and concert artists. In 1993/94 he performed his unique one-man show Pack of Divas at the Adelaide Comedy Festival and in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In 1995/96 his show Burning Sequins toured to Hong Kong, Edinburgh, Auckland and Australia. In 1997 Whole Lotta Capsis was seen at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Wellington Arts Festival and Glendi Greek Festival. In 1998, Paul performed In the Barrie Kosky directed Burlesque Tour for the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras and the Melbourne Festival. The following year he performed Paul Capsis Alive at the Metro Theatre in Sydney, Perth International Festival of the Arts, and the Hong Kong Fringe Festival. In 2002 Paul performed with Aron Ottignon in Capsis Vs Capsis in The Studio at Sydney Opera House. Capsis Vs Capsis went onto win a 2002 Helpmann Award for Best Live Music Presentation.

One of Australia's most innovative and creative musicians, Stuart Favilla specialises in synthesiser/computer music performance. He has been recognised internationally both for his talent and for the innovations he has contributed to this field.

Regarded as one of Australia's most distinguished string teachers and pedagogues, Alice Waten studied at the Moscow Conservatoire, graduating with a Master of Arts degree, where her principal teachers were Valery Klimov and David Oistrakh. Previously, she studied with Eberhard Feltz at the Hochschule für Musik, Berlin.

Born in 1951 in Rochester, UK, Jon Rose started playing the violin at seven years old, after winning a music scholarship to King's School Rochester. He studied violin with Anthony Saltmarsh (exponent of the Knud Vestergaard 'Bach' bow). He gave up formal music education at the age of 15 and from then on was primarily self-taught.

Teaching positions she has held have included Head of Strings, Chetham's Specialist Music School, Manchester, UK; Head of Strings and Orchestral Studies, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; Artist Teacher in Residence, Senior Lecturer in Violin and Director of the Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Conservatorium of Music; Head of Strings and Classical Ensemble, Australian Institute of Music, Sydney; and guest lectureships including The Menuhin School (UK), Idyllwild School of the Arts (California USA), Canberra School of Music and the Australian National Academy of Music, Melbourne.

In 1977-78 he studied jazz arranging and counterpoint with Bill Motzing at the NSW Conservatorium of Music. He became the central figure in the development of Free Improvisation in Australia, performing in almost every art gallery, jazz and rock club in the country - either solo, with fellow improvisers like Louis Burdett, Serge Ermoll, Edy Bronson, Jim Denley or with an international pool of improvising musicians called The Relative Band. The collaborative LP Tango (Hot Records) in 1983 with Martin Wesley-Smith was a world first in violin and (Fairlight) sampling improvisation.

To date Stuart's focus has been on coupling the strings to the bridge/soundboard and the knife edges that terminate the portion of the string that determines its frequency. In collaboration with colleagues from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at his university, Stuart has developed a sophisticated bridge agraffe designed to retain the vertical mode of vibration produced when the hammer strikes the string. Compared to the standard piano, these new instruments demonstrate a dramatic improvement in tuning and internal damping of the string's decay transients.

Jack Douglas recorded the Vienna Boys Choir for NBC with the Sm 5, others climbed Mount Everest with the small recorder. Even though the battery's electrolyte froze, the film makers still swore by their Sm 5. A STELLAVOX recorder was definitely used for the eighties film “Deborence”, that was awarded a Caesar, and two were used for Barbara Streisand’s “Yentl” as well as for the Marlon Brando film “Divine Rapture”. Many units went to Burbanks, - yes, where the Disney Studios were. The NBC TV studios, Warner Brothers, Paramount and sound studios, where Frank Sinatra was only one of the artists who worked there, were all located there. STELLAVOX recorders were particularly popular among musicians and music producers. However, just as nobody knows today how the top quality sound of a Stradivarius violin is produced, there is equally nobody who knows why musicians like Yehudi Menuhin or David Oistrach preferred STELLAVOX to all the other recorders.

Stuart has toured with Joanne Cannon to Denmark and Hong Kong and has had recordings selected for release by the International Computer Music Association. Stuart works as a composer/producer and musical director for film, theatre and festivals and also as an educator lecturing at tertiary institutions around Australia. Stuart plays his renowned LightHarp which uses lasers and spotlights to trace virtual strings through space for performers to play.

On screen Paul was nominated for an AFI ‘best Actor’ award for his role in the film Head On and won a Sydney Film Critics Circle Award. He has also made guest appearances in the television Pizza and Crash Palace and has hosted the Eurovision Song Contest for SBSTV. In 2002, Paul collaborated with the internationally acclaimed dance company DV8 Physical Theatre for their Olympic Arts Festival production Can WE Afford This/The Cost of Living. This production also toured to London and Hong Kong.

Jon Rose performs his group projects and solo music in upwards of 50 concerts every year - in North America, Japan, Australia, South America, China, Scandinavia and just about every country in West & East Europe. Rose also curates his own on-going festival 'String 'em up' of radical string players and their instruments, taking place in Podewil, Berlin in 1998 and Dodorama and V2, Rotterdam in 1999, Tonic, New York in 2000 and Mains D'Oeuvres, Paris in 2002.

One reason might certainly be the outstanding sound quality.
