WELCOME FROM EXERTIS Welcome to the latest issue of Future Business. Time flies so quickly but it would be remiss of me not to look back to April 19th at Silverstone and thank all of our vendors and especially our reseller and retailer customers for joining us at our second Plug in to Exertis event. It was a tremendous event and you can relive some of the memories in this issue, on page 18. Another significant date has passed with GDPR now in force – a revolution in data protection. No doubt many of you have been receiving numerous requests to continue receiving communications from companies. Consent is certainly one of the key elements of GDPR and we take a look at best practice in terms of repermissioning on page 43. Talking of revolution, Intel is always at the centre of new developments. We take a look at the impact of Optane technology and its impact in memory and storage on page 28. Technology can be an expensive investment for companies, so helping your customers to make the most of their assets can be extremely beneficial in your relationship. Whilst migration to the latest operating system is important, it often compromises other equipment. Hypertec, a company we acquired recently, has products that can extend the life of some assets simply by adding some memory and storage components. You can find out more on page 53. In addition, we are now offering a new refurbishment and repair service for handsets through our UC division. Refurbished phones can be particularly attractive proposition for small business. More details on page 49. Technology impacts every area of business and our life. Indeed, our children are exposed to technology from an
early age. It’s hardly surprising then that this transcends into education. It’s one sector that has been completely transformed. Keeping educational establishments up with technology is a real opportunity for the channel as we discuss on page 23. Certainly, there’s no shortage of choice when it comes to Large Format Display and videowall solutions. Our expert AV team at Exertis Medium offer some advice on page 33. We expect good Wi-Fi pretty much everywhere we go. The public sector is no exception. Students and teachers need robust Wi-Fi in their schools. The government has funded initiatives for Wi-Fi in the NHS and there are new opportunities in the after-care market to improve the experience of patients. We’ve plenty of experience in this area with solutions from leading vendors like Ruckus, Huawei and Fortinet as mentioned in our article on page 13. A great customer experience is important in all areas and we’ve highlighted how our print services can ensure your customers can power on and print from day one. Find out more on page 47. Once again, this is a bumper issue so don’t forget to take a look at the offers and information from our vendors, our regular look at market stats, our hot picks and must have accessories, and the latest news from Exertis and the industry. Thanks for your continued support and enjoy the read.

NEWS IN BRIEF
BUSINESS
RISKS TO ENTERPRISES FROM PERSONAL AND IOT DEVICES A recent article in Computer Weekly highlighted the cyber security risk posed to enterprises by personal IoT devices. The most common devices found on enterprise networks include fitness trackers (49%), digital assistants such as Amazon Alexa (47%), smart TVs (46%), smart kitchen devices (33%) and gaming consoles (30%). Such devices are easily discoverable by cyber criminals with an easy means of identifying a vast number of devices on enterprise networks that can then be targeted for vulnerabilities. More than 5,000 personal devices are connecting to the network each day, according to the article with employees in the US and UK admitted to connecting to the enterprise network for a number of reasons, including to access social media (39%), as well as to download apps (24%), games (13%) and films (7%).
READY, STEADY, IT’S GDPR With GDPR now in force, SMEs seem a little off the pace. The Federation of Small Business (FSB) launched a BeDataReady awareness campaign aimed at 5.7m small businesses following their survey in February which revealed that only 8% of those surveyed had completed their preparations for GDPR, with 35% only in the early stages and 33% had not even started. This resonates with another poll in January by the London Chamber of Commerce who found that 24% of London Businesses were not aware of the new regulation. Apparently, according to another survey by CRM systems integrator SeeLogic, 53% consider reputational damage as their biggest concern rather than the fear of a heavy financial penalty.
COMPANIES BRACED FOR PERSONAL DATA REQUESTS 40% of consumers plan to make subject access requests according to a survey of 3,000 adults in Europe by a leading storage software vendor when GDPR comes into force. GDPR has reduced the time required by organisations to provide that information to within one month. The survey found that 56% of respondents said they are not comfortable with companies storing personal information about them that they cannot currently access. At 56%, financial firms were top of sectors to expect data privacy requests, followed by social media firms (48%), retailers (46%), employers (24%) and healthcare providers (21%). With a much greater threat of fines for non-compliance with GDPR, it could be a difficult period for companies that haven’t taken the necessary steps to mitigate the risk of falling foul of the new regulation which gives consumers much greater control of the use of their personal data.

RUCKUS DELIVERS BEST IN CLASS CONNECTIVITY Exertis has added Ruckus to its vendor portfolio, providing resellers with their complete range of wired and wireless access network and ICX switching products.
BE SMART WITH SMART PRODUCTS A recent survey by field marketing agency Gekko entitled Smart Home Shopper has revealed that 56% of consumers have no idea how to use their Smart Tech product with three in ten regretting the purchase because it proved so difficult to get up and running. Those people bought their smart home tech from a brick and mortar retail store did so to play, touch and feel the product (40%), get advice from sales staff (30%) and a demonstration (30%). The survey highlights the opportunity for retailers to enrich the sale by clearly demonstrating the product and its functionality, and what it works with, particularly voice assistants. In addition, the opportunity to offer installation services can add to the sale as well as increasing the chances of additional products being purchased.
NEWS FROM EXERTIS:
“Ruckus is recognised as a leading provider of innovative, secure and reliable connectivity solutions with deployments in vertical markets which include hospitality, education, healthcare, retail and public venues, said Gareth Bray, Exertis, head of commercial – Enterprise. Ruckus delivers best-in-class connectivity through its indoor, outdoor and special-purpose access points as well as ICX switches. The Ruckus portfolio can fit any budget, performance requirement or deployment scenario including high-client density or building environments not suitable for radio frequency penetration. In addition, with the increased use of smart devices in multiple markets, Ruckus provides an IoT access suite that supports both Wi-Fi and non-Wi-Fi IoT endpoints with a common multi-standard access network, using the same device onboarding, security, management and network infrastructure used in existing wired and wireless LANs.
EPSON PROJECTORS IN FOCUS AT EXERTIS

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR WI-FI SOLUTIONS IN EXTENDED HEALTHCARE MARKET
Public Wi-Fi connections are pretty much ubiquitous: stations, shopping malls, coffee shops, hotels. Indeed, any place where people spend time. Many of these are provided to increase the footfall with the added incentive of collecting personal information about your interests and preferences that can be used for future marketing campaigns. However, one area that doesn’t need the increased traffic or repeat business is in the healthcare arena.
GOVERNMENT WI-FI INITIATIVE Whether it was patient demand or simply an initiative from the NHS, the government’s commitment to provide free Wi-Fi to all patients and staff by 2020 is expected to make dramatic improvements to care and to the experience of visiting a GP surgery, clinic or hospital. Certainly, an extended stay in a healthcare centre can be more enjoyable for patients who can access free Wi-Fi and as a result help themselves in the recuperation process. According to the director of digital experience at NHS England “Installing fast and free-touse Wi-Fi in NHS buildings is an important first step in the delivery of a digital healthcare experience. It will help patients to manage their health by opening up access to digital platforms such as online pharmacy services and approved patient apps and enable doctors and nurses to maximise the benefits of new technologies. Patients will be able to access their GP record online through the Patient Online portal whilst in their consultation, empowering them to take more of an active role in discussing and managing their condition, which we know leads to better health outcomes."
SECURITY REMAINS PARAMOUNT Of course, no-one doubts the productivity and efficiency that Wi-Fi can bring to medical staff and to the improved patient experience, but it mustn't come at a cost. To achieve the outcomes desired by NHS Digital, Wireless local area networks (WLAN) reliability is of paramount importance as it’s often supporting vital functions required by both new technology and user demand. Access control and application security are critical to its success. Protecting patient data and regulatory compliance such as GDPR require robust solutions as healthcare remains a key target for cybercriminals. Indeed healthcare suffers the most cyber attacks of any industry. With the increase in connected medical devices and BYOD continuing to grow, healthcare providers have to examine their
WLAN infrastructure to ensure they can continue to meet bandwidth and critical services demands without compromising security. While firewalls keep many external threats from entering the network, IoMT and BYOD devices are easier targets for cyberattacks. Allied Market Research predicts that the IoT healthcare market will reach $136.8bn worldwide by 2021. Today, there are 3.7m medical devices in use that are connected to and monitor various parts of the body to inform healthcare decisions. Access control and identity management becomes more complicated by more people and more devices attempting to connect to the network. Ensuring unauthorised users cannot access confidential information whilst maintaining robust connectivity is a security balancing act. However, identity management systems, access layer security and clear visibility of activity on the network are key to alleviating the issue. Centralised authentication and secure singlesign-on solutions that give authorised personnel access to many applications under a single login credential can ensure efficiency for staff, while keeping others out. In addition, it makes perfect sense to create a separate guest network in healthcare environments where Wi-Fi’s primary purpose is to improve the patient experience rather than tackle a health issue. Keeping visitors off the network that contains confidential information is an easy win.
POTENTIAL Whilst the programme to introduce Wi-Fi into GP surgeries, clinics and hospitals in the UK is well under way, there is still a big potential market in allied areas such as care homes where the same case for improving the experience can be made for both residents and visitors. A recent government market study* estimates there are around 5,500 different providers in the UK operating 11,300 care homes for the elderly. With the office for National Statistics predicting a 36% growth in persons aged 85+ between 2015 and 2025, from 1.5m to 2m, the number of care homes is likely to increase. That provides another opportunity for the channel to provide Wi-Fi services and other technology. Exertis provides a number of solutions from Wi-Fi partners with propositions from Ruckus, Huawei and Fortinet and leading wireless onboarding solutions including Captivnet and Cloudpath. * https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/care-homes-marketstudy-summary-of-final-report/care-homes-market-study-summaryof-final-report

MANY SMALL
BUSINESSES
STILL UNPREPARED
AS GDPR COMES
INTO FORCE This sort of willingness to work with small firms is what is needed as they try to grapple with the burden of complying with GDPR, and regulators across the EU should look to replicate this approach. With the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) throughout the EU, small businesses in the UK and across the continent are facing an uphill struggle to ensure they are compliant. The reforms are the largest shakeup in data protection laws in decades, with the new rules aimed at overhauling the way that businesses collect, handle and store personal data. However, for many small firms, getting to grips with GDPR has been incredibly challenging, with most of these businesses failing to get past the initial stages of preparation with just weeks to go.
However, that doesn’t downplay the fact that most small firms will struggle in the early days of GDPR. For this, they will require support from the ICO, and all eyes will be on them as to whether they have the ability and resources to effectively deal with these enquiries. Small businesses are also consumers and understand the importance of data protection – they need to feel that their data is being protected like everyone else. The aims of the European Commission should be commended for trying to achieve an online environment where everyone’s data is secure and where the dream of a Digital Single Market is realised. Unfortunately, these benefits won’t be fully realised if smaller firms do not positively embrace the new data protection landscape. This can only happen if they are given the time to understand the changes and implement them correctly.
FSB research, released in February 2018, showed that over a third (33%) of small businesses had not started preparing for the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) while a further third (35%) were only in the early stages of preparations. Only 8% of small businesses had completed their preparations.
ABOUT FSB
In the UK, it is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) that will enforce the new laws, but with many businesses, both small and large thought to have missed the 25 May deadline, FSB has called for a light touch manner with the focus being on education and support, not punishment, especially in the first few months.
As experts in business, FSB offers members a wide range of vital business services, including advice, financial expertise, support and a powerful voice in Government. Its aim is to help smaller businesses achieve their ambitions. More information is available at www.fsb. org.uk. You can follow us on twitter @fsb_policy.
In the UK parliament, the Information Commissioner, Elizabeth Denham, specifically stated that the ICO isn’t a “bonkers regulator” and wouldn’t be looking to target small businesses, which is welcome.

THE IMPACT OF
TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION With technology evolving at a remarkable rate, it’s almost impossible for educators to keep up with the speed of change. Of course, the classroom or the lecture theatre of today looks quite different from what it did even ten years ago, let alone a generation. It has been reported that many teachers believe that their students know more about technology than they do. In some respects, it’s hardly surprising as most have been exposed to devices, the internet and social media from a very early age. These tech savvy students expect technology to be available at anytime and anywhere. Resellers that sell technology into the education sector are therefore in the best position to become the trusted advisors of schools and universities when it comes to procurement and deployment. In addition, they have the opportunity to close the skills gap by providing training for teachers on products that can radically change their methods of teaching and engagement with their students. The return on investment from technology for educational establishments can be measured in various ways from academic achievement to empowering the student to learn and enabling the teacher to be more effective and efficient. Naturally, those involved in developing and selling the technology believe that it has a positive impact. With limited budgets schools must ensure that indeed it does.
From surveys and reports, it seems that most teachers believe that technology has had a positive impact in the classroom, maintaining that it has enabled them to perform better and be more efficient. Most importantly, it’s clear that children are more engaged in learning as a result. Part of the reason is that technology can bring more fun, collaboration and individual coaching, and monitoring to the classroom. In addition, it has certainly provided more immediate access to more information than was possible a generation ago both in and outside of school. That of course brings some issues. Both parents and teachers are naturally concerned about school children being able to access inappropriate material online. It’s difficult to control what children are doing on their devices the whole time. Whilst parents and teachers have responsibility in this regard, there are concerns that social media and tech companies are not doing enough to protect children. With the requirement for educational establishments to comply with the Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSiE) guidelines, resellers have another opportunity to support this sector with appropriate advice on filtering software solutions. Alongside this issue, educational establishments are not immune from the general increase in cyberattacks and no doubt more could be done to improve schools’ security systems. It’s a constant battle for all industry sectors.

FUTURE
Of course, there is wide range of technology already installed in educational establishments from computing devices, AV and print to network infrastructure and security. Judging by most educational reports and blogs, technologies that can have the biggest impact in the future are: Touchboards (e.g. interactive whiteboards or projectors) digital portfolios (where pupils can share notes and collaborate on projects) VR/AR and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Internet security and web filtering should always remain top of mind and there is also an appetite for refurbished devices that can go some way to extending educational budgets. Refurbished doesn’t equate to out-dated technology: usually such equipment can be just a couple of years old but considerably cheaper, up to 40% in some cases.
YOUR ONE STOP SHOP FOR EDUCATION Despite the constant noise around cuts in education budgets, the market remains significant enough for vendors and resellers to continue to focus on the opportunity of providing technology. Indeed schools spend around £900m on education technology every year, according to edTech UK. Whilst educators have different motivations when it comes to their purchasing decisions the key priorities are to deliver the curriculum, drive results, comply with regulation and improve student acquisition (particularly in higher education). Technical innovation is one way to achieve that but the technology deployed needs to make a difference both from the teachers’ and the students’ perspective. Teachers need tools that can enable them to enhance their teaching, save them time and enable their students to gain more knowledge and skills. Students want an engaging and fun learning experience utilising the technology and devices they are familiar with in their everyday life. Integrating technology into the classroom is an effective way to connect with students of all learning styles, to increase interaction,
GA B UM S I IN NE GS A SN D E N T E R T A I N M E N T
to encourage collaboration and to provide a means to access the huge resource that is available today from the internet. Combining new technologies like VR with traditional classroom instruction is one example of how it can enhance the learning experience and create new opportunities. Not only is technology ever changing but models to finance it too are also impacting the way organisations buy and consume. The “as a service” model has extended beyond just software to hardware enabling big capital investments to be managed on a monthly “pay as you use proposition”. Education won’t be immune from that. Of course, the channel has a key part to play in helping educational establishments to know what technology is available. Providing, deploying and monitoring the right solutions is how resellers can support their educational customers along with ensuring training is provided to optimise the use of the equipment. In turn, resellers need a one stop shop for the products and solutions, and the opportunity to take advantage of additional technical support and services that can help them win and maintain a customer. Exertis is your ideal partner to do just that. With our scale of technologies, wide product portfolio, supply chain efficiency, service and technical expertise, we are best placed to help resellers with a one stop solution that can meet the demands of educational establishments. With over 400 brands in our portfolio, we have the products that can build a total end-to-end solution and technical experts across our categories that can support you, making it easy for you to leverage the benefits of buying from one source. REVOLUTIONISING MEMORY AND STORAGE Intel Optane provides fast system responsiveness for large capacity storage drives, making everything you do fast, smooth and easy. Optane is available in two forms: Optane SSDs and Optane Memory. Intel Optane memory is a smart, adaptable system accelerator for PCs with a 7th and 8th Gen Intel Core Processor and a hard disk drive. The technology provides an unparalleled combination of high throughput, low latency, high quality of service and high endurance unleashing unprecedented possibilities from data centre to desktop. By providing a unique combination of 3D XPoint memory media, Intel Memory and storage controllers, Intel Interconnect IP and Intel software, it delivers extraordinary new levels of system responsiveness for gamers, creative professionals and mainstream PC users, at an affordable price. The accelerator sits between a system’s processor and SATA-based storage device, storing frequently used data and applications close to the processor. As a result, applications can launch and run faster without added storage cost. High capacity, high performing local storage is expensive. With a typical PC architecture set-up, you have your CPU, your L1, L2, L3 cache and then a DRAM and storage solution, usually a hard drive. The further away from your CPU you operate, the more performance you lose. The pay-off for increasing storage density is that your latency also increases and everything is volatile, so needs to be flushed at reboot, which really slows performance down.
SMART AND ADAPTIVE: Intel Optane technology, built with 3D XPoint memory media, bridges the gap between DRAM and today’s NAND technologies. It’s a completely new architecture built from the ground up for the data-intensive world: still stackable, that’s the 3D part, but delivering an extremely low latency. It’s non-volatile, so when you reboot a power cycle, everything stays as it is. It’s also smart and adaptive. All the most critical system files are automatically moved over to Intel Optane memory, including system files, boot files and any Microsoft OS critical files. But a new kind of file-aware caching also optimises itself around the user, moving the most used apps and files across so they are easily accessible, while evicting files that aren’t touched. With each subsequent boot, the system will learn more about a user’s behaviour and move across those files and apps that are being regularly accessed: Outlook, Excel, Word. It’s Intel Optane technology innovation that makes all this possible. By learning and remembering the way you work, Intel Optane memory can accelerate your workflow and increase your productivity. With the new 8th Gen Intel Core processors combined with Intel Optane memory, Intel claims your everyday work tasks will perform up to 2.2x faster meaning you get the high-performance you need to work more efficiently and spend less time in front of your screen.

prevalent form factors of mobile and desktop PCs today. Simply install it in any Intel Optane ready system using the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology driver alongside their storage controller and Intel Optane memory will pair up with the hard drive and present to the Microsoft OS as one volume. For smaller workloads and mainstream uses, the 16GB Intel Optane memory module is the right option. For more intensive gaming or creative, media-intensive applications, the 32GB module is the ideal choice. Intel recently introduced its second generation of Optane Memory products: these are low-capacity M.2 NVMe SSDs with 3D XPoint memory that are intended for use as cache devices to improve performance of systems using hard drives. The new Optane Memory M10 brings a 64GB capacity to the product line. A major new feature for this generation of Optane Memory caching is the addition of the ability to cache a secondary data drive, whereas previously only boot drives were possible. Intel refers to this mode as "data drive acceleration", compared to the system acceleration (boot drive) that was the only mode supported by the first generation of Optane Memory Building systems that accelerate performance without compromising capacity or cost will obviously help to drive PC refresh cycles and generate new upsell opportunities. The fact is that the desktop market continues to massively favour hard drive, so the Intel Optane memory opportunity really is a healthy one for system-builder partners. Pairing with a hard drive manufacturer, makes it easy for small integration shops to add value for these lucrative mainstream users.
EXPANDING PORTFOLIO Intel is building a portfolio of Intel Optane technology-based solutions for both desktops, more recently laptops and the data centre. Intel Optane SSDs for data centres are available in AIC and U.2 form factors and Intel expect this technology will revolutionise the data centre in the way that Intel Optane memory is transforming the desktop. These SSDs help to eliminate data centre storage bottlenecks and allow bigger, more affordable data sets. They can accelerate applications, reduce transaction costs for latency-sensitive workloads, and improve overall data centre TCO.
In terms of speed, 3D-TLC NAND SSDs tend to have a latency of around 100 microseconds. Intel Optane technology with 3D XPoint memory media starts at 6 microseconds: that’s over 16 times faster than any 3D-TLC NAND SSD out there. This really is a groundbreaking new architectural approach. Intel believes there is a big market that wants plenty of high capacity and local storage but also wants SSD-levels of speed and performance at a reasonable cost.
BREAKING THE STORAGE BOTTLENECK Data is increasing exponentially with 4k video, gaming and high resolution creative applications. The data files are huge and need to be stored but not to the detriment of slow load and transfer times. Intel’s research has shown that users often prefer to have lots of local capacity. They don’t necessarily have high-speed network connections and would rather keep personal files, such as family photos, physically stored on their own machines. As CPUs get faster and faster, the challenge has been how to affordably break the storage bottleneck. Intel Optane memory finally ends the cost / performance trade-off that system integrators and customers have long had to make. Intel Optane memory is perfectly tuned for mass market M.2 desktops. Intel launched with two available SKUs: 16GB and 32GB. Either one is compatible with a standard M.2, one of the most
Earlier this year, Intel launched the Optane SSD 800P family as the low-end alternative to the flagship Optane SSD 900P. Ideal for use as a standalone SSD, in a dual drive setup or in a multiple SSD RAID configuration (PCH-based or CPU-based), these drives also support lower-power states, allowing them to operate in devices like laptops and 2 in 1 devices, as well as desktop systems. WHICH DISPLAY AND VIDEOWALL SOLUTION? Buying the right Large Format Display and videowall solution for your customers can be a potential minefield. Far too often customers end up with displays which are unsuitable for their environment, either not staying on for long enough, being too dim for their intended use, or simply just unreliable. Here's some help from our experts at Exertis Medium. Large Format Display (LFD) screens typically include screens from 32” all the way up to 98”, with some manufacturers even showing 100” + earlier this year. For business use, there are some key specifications and factors that need to be considered when selecting the right screens. Application, operating hours, resolution, brightness, signage software, physical environment and control are all essential considerations. Once these have been established, cost is also important. We will focus on the key players within the display market: NEC, LG, Samsung, Philips and DynaScan.
STANDARD ESSENTIAL From an entry level and best value perspective, the SE3KD range from LG is a safe bet and has a wide range of sizes from 32” to 65”. For an ‘entry level’ product the SE range is jam packed with features which makes it a sound purchase for multiple environments. The display features an 11.9mm super thin bezel, as well as a detachable logo at the screen base, and well organised cable management terminals. Cable management for displays is often an expected feature, but more often than not, one that is given little thought, so it is nice to see that LG have given it the attention it deserves. The screen is 18/7 on and can be used in both portrait and landscape orientations. You can even customise the start up screen and it benefits from USB content sharing too!

HIGH BRIGHT For high bright displays and particularly retail window displays, clarity and reliability are paramount. The range of displays from Dynascan are designed for just these environments and offer the world’s brightest line of LCD displays, intended to operate in very high ambient light conditions. With brightness ratings from 2,500 nits and as high as 7,000 nits, the screens can be installed in bright locations such as storefront windows - even those in direct sunlight and are able to overcome the competing ambient light. Their screens are also available in dual sided configurations (55”). DynaScan displays are an extremely popular choice for retail and transportation hub use. They are designed to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with advanced heat management systems. Built with security in mind, they offer rugged, metal construction and the ability to lockout remote control functions. DynaScan displays really must be seen to fully appreciate their brightness and clarity, and of course, we can arrange an onsite demonstration for you or your customers to test the suitability for the environment.
OLED LG is the only manufacturer to offer OLED in the commercial market. Their OLED screens offer near perfect colour as well as absolute blacks with no light bleed thanks to the self-lighting pixels. Their paper slim commercial formats are wide ranging, offering standard and in-glass wallpaper, dual-flat, fixed curve Open Frame and dual view Curved Tiling.
SIGNAGE For many years now, Samsung has been at the forefront of Digital Signage displays. They are one of the few manufacturers that produce both an extensive range of System on Chip (SOC) LFDs as well as a powerful signage software in MagicInfo. Whether you are looking to utilise landscape or portrait, or a single screen or a multi-screen display wall, there is a superb range to choose from when deciding what is best for your display environment. Screen sizes range from 32” to 98” and offer incredible image quality coupled with an enviable content management system for the distribution of content. To provide an added layer of security, convenience and providing complete control, MagicInfo CMS is installed on your local onpremise server and can be easily accessed by multiple users through a web browser. One of the other key advantages with MagicInfo is the one-off licence fee per display model, which doesn’t tie you into lengthy contracts and the inevitable renewal fees.
4K UHD The new Q-Line Series from Philips complements their existing 4k line up of large screens. From 49” all the way up to 65”, the Q-Line series all come with 4k Ultra HD as standard, as well as SmartPlayer and Android on every screen.
VIDEOWALL For large format videowall, recent advances in display technology mean that today, there is a broad choice available in the market. Adaptable, scalable and modular, NEC’s 46” and 55” Ultra Narrow LCD displays offer unlimited flexibility in creating a compelling videowall experience. Professional features ensure outstanding uniformity and a perfectly synchronised image across the entire wall. NEC’s Modular Touch System, with versatile ‘ShadowSense’ frames, transforms multiple screens into a huge interactive canvas. NEC’s Open Modular Intelligence platform enables computing power to be embedded into the display for a neat, seamless and upgradable solution. dvLED videowalls from NEC also offer compelling opportunities to impress and engage audiences with bright, high resolution imagery. As the only display manufacturer able to offer dvLED, NEC is uniquely placed to provide integrators and end users with this superior solution. Through a clear understanding of the context, and by working hand-in-hand with NEC, we can recommend and supply the perfect-fit, visual solution to meet the specific needs of the application, ensuring a secure future-proof investment.
BRACKETS & MOUNTS Your display will require a mounting solution! Bracket manufacturers, such as Peerless, have introduced impressive innovations in their range which not only increase the speed of install but offer hassle free servicing access too. For example, the Quick Release (QR) range from Peerless enables quick and easy access to remove a video wall screen in the event of servicing or failure. It also offers multiple adjustment points upon install to ensure perfect alignment even on uneven walls.
With Android OS integrated into the display, you can work with the most developed OS on the planet and save your own app directly into the display. Or, choose from the large library of Android apps and play content from there.
Peerless also have an impressive range of indoor display kiosks (compatible with all of our LFD brands) where wall mounting isn’t the preferred solution. One of the unique features offered by Peerless is the ability to customise each kiosk with custom colour finishes, vinyl logos and wraps.
Uniquely with Philips, each of their large format displays also comes with 3-year de-install/re-install onsite warranty as standard, which gives that extra piece of mind should something go wrong.

HOW TO
MANAGE MARKETING CONSENT
The date has passed for GDPR regulation to be in force. Much has been written about the subject over the last two years and no doubt in the last few weeks, many EU citizens have either received e-mails or had telephone calls regarding re-permissioning ahead of the enforcement. Indeed, this is clearly the best option, unless you want to follow the infamous Wetherspoons strategy of deleting your entire database and hoping your customers will go unprompted to your website for the latest news. Whilst that might ensure compliancy, it’s a somewhat brave and drastic measure. There has been much debate about whether legitimate interest is also an acceptable legal basis for the processing of data. This could also be seen to carry a much higher risk than gaining consent and the conditions are not as clear cut. However, the ICO does provide some guidance should you deem to go down that route: https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/ guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/lawful-basisfor-processing/legitimate-interests/
GDPR CONSENT REQUIREMENTS MUST BE
MUST NOT
A clear affirmative action
Use pre-ticked boxes
CONSENT IS A KEY ELEMENT WITHIN GDPR Under GDPR, you need to have had explicit consent to use an individual’s data. It needs to have been “freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous” with a clear affirmative action. Assuming permission with a pre-ticked box or an “if we don’t hear from you message” isn’t acceptable either. Opt-ins must be a clear and deliberate choice. What’s more, it can’t contain negative consequences or bundled conditions. For instance, if you were running a loyalty scheme, the customer should still be able to enjoy the benefits of that without having to opt-in to marketing e-mails. Likewise, marketing consent cannot be assumed to be part of agreeing to your business terms and conditions. Therefore, if you sell a product or service to an individual and collect their data at the time, it doesn’t enable you to add this to your marketing database without the customer’s consent. However, it’s worth pointing out that transactional/servicing mails are unaffected. For example, if you are changing your address or a standard delivery charge. Individuals must be free to sign up separately to different processing operations and equally if you have acquired consent specifically for one purpose, you need consent if you wish to use it for another operation. The language used needs to be jargon free, unambiguous and clear as to what you intend to use the data for. If you are choosing to repermission by e-mail, then ensure that the e-mail is also clear and concise with copy that makes it obvious what you need from them and why. Whilst, it’s worth pointing out that recipients will be automatically opted-out if they don’t respond, the idea is to ensure that the benefits of opting-in make that an unattractive proposition.
Freely given, specific and informed
Proven by the data controller
Make consent a condition or service
!?!?! Use language likely to confuse
Withdrawn easily
Be bundled with other terms and conditions

FUTURE
PRINT MATTERS Despite the drive to digitalise, MFPs and printers will still play an important part in both the future and current office environment with potential for further innovation such as mobile printing from any device. Whilst some distributors and resellers have defocused from selling printers as part of their IT offering, it couldn’t be further from the truth at Exertis. Over the last few years, we have made significant investment into resources which has resulted in the print division consistently outperforming the market. We operate across four UK offices in Basingstoke, Burnley, Norfolk and Elland where we have our dedicated supplies operation. Indeed, we are the only distributor that has a specialist print and supplies business. Exertis Supplies offers print cartridges, data storage media and office supplies with access to 1,000’s of product lines from all the leading manufacturers.
EXERTIS’ PRINT SERVICES INCLUDE: •
• We now have a seventeen strong sales and commercial team focused on the print and scan market. Our new facility in Norfolk houses our OA sales and LFP specialists as well as dedicated sales specialists for Oki, Brother, Samsung and Epson. We also have two dedicated print product managers, one in Norfolk, the other in Basingstoke, in addition to a retail business manager in Basingstoke.
•
• We provide a range of services applicable to retail, B2B and OA customers, offering a range of printers and scanners from Brother, Epson, Lexmark, OKI, HP and Plustek with 3D from XYZprinting. Indeed, services are one of the key value-adds that we offer. Our “power on and print” offering is a key differentiator in the market and one that eliminates DOAs and onsite configuration pain with Exertis Print’s range of pre-delivery services.
•
• Whether you are providing a large roll out or a single unit, our preconfiguration service gives peace of mind against DOAs and reduces the time and cost of onsite installation. By ensuring all PDI setup and function checks are completed prior to the printer arriving on site, our service enables your end user to power on and print from day one, providing a great customer experience.
Asset Tagging – prior to shipment Exertis engineering can asset tag any device, reducing the amount of work for onsite engineers which in turn saves time and money for the reseller. For the customer, they have a means to identify, track and control their asset. Basic Network Setup – by doing a base level network set up, install times are improved meaning less cost and hassle for the installation team. Firmware/ Software Update – ensuring printers have the latest firmware and drivers prior to shipment, helping protect against DOA units and wasted time whilst on site. Pre-shipment PDI - Unbox, Install Cartridges and Calibrate, Setup Date/Time/Location, Setup Paper Trays, Test Print, Test Scan (where applicable) and Repackage means that printers arrive ready to plug in and print Legacy equipment collection and disposal – disposing of hardware can be time consuming and costly, let alone the cost of transiting the items. We can take that pain away for you. Hard Drive destruction and certification – particularly of interest for end users who deal with sensitive information. We can wipe or shred the hard drives from legacy printers to ensure data is secure.
We can also provide training on the equipment as required. For further information, please contact your Exertis account manager.

GOVT ACTS ON IOT SECURITY
REFURB FOR HANDSETS
GOVT ACTS ON IOT SECURITY
Exertis has launched a refurbished handset initiative from its Unified Communications division which can either provide a buy-back incentive against legacy hardware or a repair service. Resellers can provide their customers with a choice of buying a new or refurbished system using the residual value from their hardware, undertaking a repair or obtaining a cash payment.
The government has reacted to the need to protect consumers and businesses with the increased usage of IoT devices by publishing a Secure by Design report that shifts the burden of security from the end user to the manufacturer. The government estimates that every household in the UK owns at least 10 internet connected devices, a figure that is expected to rise to 15 by 2020. However, it’s not just in the home, increasingly IoT is being connected to infrastructure in smart cities, hospitals, industry and business. The potential of compromised, networked devices being used to launch large scale DDoS attacks is quite real. Some reports maintain that the number of connected devices will soon exceed the world’s population. So, with online security and privacy top of mind at present, the government’s recommendations have been welcomed, even if they are not legally binding. The latter point has been the main criticism of the initiative.
For many companies, the opportunity to either repair existing equipment or buy refurbished hardware makes good business sense. Older equipment can still offer great functionality and can be repaired “as new” providing an increased return on the original investment. Or refurbished phones that can still meet existing requirements can be purchased at a much-reduced cost. In addition, there is often redundant equipment in a company which can provide additional revenue for the customer through a cash payment and ensure a more environmentally friendly outcome to its disposal.
The review which was developed with the help of manufacturers, retailers and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), makes it clear that companies should integrate sufficient security mechanisms into devices. The central proposal of the report is a Code of Practice aimed primarily at manufacturers of consumer IoT products and associated services. Developed through extensive engagement with industry and subject matter experts, it sets out thirteen practical steps to improve the security of consumer IoT of which the first three are said to be priorities.
Once the equipment is received, customers will be provided with an estimate within 48 hours as to the cost of a repair, a “like for like” refurbished system or a cash payment. Ninety per cent of refurbished handsets are remanufactured which often includes re-casing and re-buttoning the phone along with brand new handpieces and curly cords. Any previous data is securely wiped from the phone. All handsets are cleaned, fully tested and come with a 12-month warranty. Refurbished phones can be particularly attractive for small businesses. Phone systems are built to last and this new service from Exertis can extend the life of existing equipment. Resellers have the opportunity to reinstall the system, ensuring compatibility with existing equipment such as headsets, and provide a service which can add an additional revenue stream to their business. Exertis also provides a smartphone refurbishment service through its MTR division. For further details, contact the UC team on comms.north@exertis. co.uk

FEATURE DEPRECIATION
Feature depreciation is a real concern for organisations that have heavily invested in a Windows 10 migration or are on a path to do so. With Windows 7 end of life support scheduled for January 2020, expect that path to become well-trodden as businesses realise that without security updates their data and systems become vulnerable. With GDPR implementation, it’s a risk that’s clearly not worth taking. Of course, businesses also want to maximise their investment in devices and where possible extend their life without affecting the productivity of the user. But migration to the latest operating system doesn’t always co-exist with the deployment of new machines. That presents a real opportunity for resellers to help their customers to utilise their existing machine estate whilst ensuring their employees still benefit from a modern digital workplace. Hypertec (who was recently acquired by Exertis in March 2018 https://bit.ly/2LL9X1z) can work with resellers to identify customers that are part of a Windows 10 migration and help them to determine what their machines need to perform to their potential. For instance, Windows 10 updates alone require a level of additional storage to complete. However, with organisations increasingly building their employees’ user profiles, based on their job classification, preferences and needs, it establishes a clearer personalisation of their machine. Matching the user profile to the correct level of memory required to support the tasks they undertake, can significantly

protect organisations from loss of productivity whilst ensuring their employees are benefiting from the enhanced features that Windows 10 provides. One quick and easy way for resellers to help your customers, and to maximise the opportunity to sell more around Windows 10, is to use Hypertec’s handy “System Upgrade Spec Tool”. This will enable you and your customers to establish exactly what they need. It’s a simple way to add life-extending accessory sales, enable your customers to maximise their hardware investment and add additional profit to your sales. At the same time, why not take advantage of the inevitable hype around GDPR and offer products such as encrypted USBs to protect mobile data or privacy filters to protect on-screen data.
