Nintendo fans will be certain to have a happy Christmas, as the legendary Japanese company prepares to launch a number of new AAA titles. Following on from the huge global smash that was Pokémon Go, two new Nintendo 3DS games are set to emerge on the 23rd November. Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon will feature a number of new evolutions for certain creatures, include two new trainers and be available in either standard or Steel case variants. With interest in Pokémon now at record levels thanks to Pokémon Go, there’s no doubt that the new titles will be high on the Christmas lists of many of the franchise’s huge following.

The popularity of VR Headsets seems to have been underestimated by analysts, who are revising their expectations for the year. CCS Insights now forecasts that, due to the increased demand for Smartphone headsets, such as Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR Headset, this sector of the market will be worth over £400m by the end of 2016, with 14.5m units being sold.

Office Networks People Cloud Clearance Components Digital Consumer

‘VR Headsets have clearly captured consumers’ imagination,’ stated Ben Woods, CCS Insights’ Chief of Research. ‘The affordability of basic cardboard headsets makes virtual reality easily accessible to smartphone owners, and the explosion of 360-degree content is taking awareness to new levels.’

OfficeComputing People Cloud Components

These 360-degree cameras, such as the Kaiser Baas 360, allow users to create their own content which others can explore through VR Headsets. Some are speculating that this could become a significant driving factor in the adoption of the technology as social media moves from ‘selfie’ to ‘surroundie’ video and images. CCS Insights also states that it expects the VR Headset market as a whole to be worth around £1.2bn by the end of 2016, rising to £9bn by 2020.

Pokémon isn’t the only fan favourite due before the end of the year though, with Super Mario Maker (2nd Dec), Animal Crossing: New Leaf (25th Nov), Disney Magical World 2 (out now), and Picross 3D Round 2 (2nd Dec), among the highlights that will be dominating the charts this December. The eagerly anticipated Nintendo NX console is also expected to be released in the first quarter of 2017, so it seems that the classic brand is the one to watch in the months ahead.

Recently released figures show that sales across the IT retail market saw a 6% drop in Q2 2016, when compared to the same period in 2015. According to industry analyst GfK, this reduction is attributed mainly to slower sales for PCs and tablets, alongside storage and networking solutions. One area to buck this trend was that of gaming peripherals, which not only held its own but actually increased across the second quarter of the year.

Growth Home Entertainment Servers Heating & Cooling Microsoft Mobile

The biggest improvements in sales came from gaming keyboards and mice, the former of which grew by 27% with the latter eclipsing it with a 34% increase. Interestingly in-store sales saw a marginally superior growth rate, which GfK suggests could be down to the ergonomic nature of the devices meaning that customers prefer to be hands-on before they buy.

Another area to see improvements was that of monitors. Even though sales of PCs declined, monitors increased by 31% overall, with speciality gaming models seeing a massive 143% rise. This will be reassuring for retailers as gaming variants were, on average, 88% more expensive than standard models, showing that gamers were still happily prepared to invest in premium lines.

Possibly the most important finding though was the disparity in age between fans. While 53% of American football supporters were over 35 years old, a massive 73% of eSports fans were below that age. This includes nearly 25% of all male millennials whose eSports consumption was revealed to be higher than ice hockey and on par with baseball.

This has highlighted the potential value of eSports to sponsors, media, merchandise vendors, advertisers and others who see the current £400m revenue stream as just the tip of the iceberg. With a young audience, global access, increasing levels of online interest, attendances of over 100,000 at live tournaments, and 76% of fans saying that eSports is now replacing some of the time they spend watching traditional sports, the rise looks set to accelerate significantly in the next few years.

With an increasing number of people listening to music on smartphones, either through ripping their CDs or using streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, or Google Play Music, sales of wireless speakers are on the rise. Latest figures predict that over 42m bluetooth speakers will be sold worldwide in 2016, raising the market value to around £3bn. This 23% increase is being strongly linked to smartphones due to the specific features customers are requesting.

Office Networks People

The outdoor segment of the speaker market is seeing the biggest growth as consumers look for devices that are water resistant and shockproof. This suggests the intentions to take speakers to parties, beaches, gardens, and other environments where they can stream music from their smartphones without the encumbrance of power supplies or bulky units. Another growing area is that of stereo pairing speakers that allow users to sync a couple of devices together and play their music in rich stereo. OMNI-SHOPPERS

NEED AN OMNI-CHANNEL

APPROACH THE STORE EXPERIENCE IS CHANGING Technology has certainly changed consumer behaviour. More and more of us do our shopping online, but that doesn’t mean the retail store is dead, it’s just undergoing change. Experts believe we have moved from a multi-channel approach with website, social and store to an omni-channel approach that requires a more integrated customer experience based on interactions with the company. Consumers now expect to get information whenever they need it, to be able to purchase the product when they want it, to be able to pay for it seamlessly and decide how they want to receive it. They will use retailers that add convenience and physical stores that add value to their purchase. Indeed, just because more people shop online, it doesn’t mean they’ll stop visiting a physical store. For most retail sectors, it still offers a fundamentally different function, giving consumers the ability to see, taste and touch the products in a way that is impossible online. Analysts believe that the challenge for store retailers is to incorporate new technology that provides a different experience for the consumer. Many retailers have already added to the in store experience with internet-enabled kiosks to enable consumers to further research products or check stock availability, made Wi-Fi available, enabled mobile cashless payments and leveraged the opportunity to touch and see the product prior to purchase. Some have extended the latter in order to make the store more of a destination than a visit. Indeed, the more entrepreneurial brands have changed the store into a place of learning and inspiration, inviting customers to experience and bond with the company in a way that is unachievable through e-commerce alone. Of course, once in store they use the opportunity to personally promote an offer through beacon technology and gain further insight through data collection.

STORE ASSISTANTS REMAIN AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE Furthermore, some retailers are also equipping staff to add even more value by using tablets that can potentially handle customer queries about range, specification, real-time stock levels, place out of stock orders and with mobile POS, enable payments to be made anywhere in the store. This cuts out queues and adds further to a personalised customer experience. According to Deloitte “Retailers that narrowly focus on digital commerce – rather than the full journey that leads to a purchase – often fail to recognise how their customers shop and make decisions in the store”. Although consumers can use their mobile phones and applications like Red Laser to look up a product by scanning it or typing in the bar code whilst in the store (the app then returns a list of prices for the same item at nearby stores or through online retailers). A Retail Perceptions report by Interactions, a retail services and experiential marketing firm, stated that 56% of women and 60% of men would prefer to communicate with a retailer through a store assistant rather than with a mobile device. That said, it reported that 80% of women and 77% of men who download retailer apps use them while they shop in the store.

Growth Public Home Entertainment Heating & Print Cooling (VAD) Whether a company started as a retailer or an e-tailer, the omnichannel approach isn’t going away. Indeed it’s having an effect on store size, as some retailers scale down and use in-store technology to augment their stock levels but provide an efficient delivery mechanism whilst enabling some e-tailers to open small, boutique outlets backed by their existing e-commerce expertise.

Professional Services Public Sector Home Entertainment Retail Heating & Cooling Lighting (VAD) However, does this approach have a positive effect on sales as well as create a better understanding of customer behaviour? According to Steve Sadove, Saks Fifth Avenue CEO “The consumer who shops across multiple channels buys three to four times as much as the customer who buys in only one channel”. Their value increases even more when a mobile channel is added. That view is shared by Peter Fitzgerald, head of UK retail for Google, “The store and online shopper is four times more valuable than just a store shopper online. But if you add mobile, they’re eight times more valuable.”

Beacon technology has enabled stores to send personalised offers and promotions through mobile apps based on the in store location of the customer. On the face of it, they are a great addition to the retailers’ marketing weaponry as well as being inexpensive and inconspicuous. But the beacon relies on a Bluetooth connection to an app to trigger the action, and most importantly, the customer needs to have that installed on their phone. However, Google’s Eddystone BLE beacon using a URL frame type broadcasts information that can be natively used by a phone even if it doesn’t have a brand app installed. These beacons work with the existing Google chrome widget or the physical web app. This has considerable benefits in terms of cost and will undoubtedly lead to more brands participating in proximity based customer engagement.

According to a retail technology trend report from CSC, retailers will focus on a mobile first strategy. Previously, retailers invested in traditional digital content for desktop and laptop users, and added functionality for mobile and tablets. CSC believes that over 30% of all commerce will be conducted on mobile devices and that 80% of consumers will use their mobile device in the purchasing decision process. Therefore, investments are more likely to be made in building purpose built content for mobile devices as opposed to websites optimised for viewing on a mobile device.

GIFTS FOR CONSOLE GAMERS Easily one of the most in demand products for gamers this year is that of the new Xbox One S console. Microsoft has taken the already impressive standard Xbox and slimmed it down by 40%, all while adding 4K UHD Blu-Ray and streaming capabilities and High Dynamic Range visuals to ensure that graphics really come alive. Plus with the increased maximum storage capacity of 2TB, gamers can store up to 100 additional games on their internal hard drives. To entice potential buyers there are a number of excellent bundle deals on offer. One of the most tempting pairs an Xbox One S console

with football mega-title FIFA 17, while another huge combination is the Xbox One S and Minecraft bundle, which not only includes the original game but also a number of favourite skins, texture packs, the builders edition, and even a Windows 10 version. These bundles present an opportunity to upsell Xbox Live memberships so customers can enjoy the online modes, but for gamers who want to play FIFA 17 with friends on the sofa there’s the option of a second controller. Microsoft offers a wide range of new colour variants this year, as well as game tie-in models for Gears of War 4, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Forza Horizon 3. Of course games are always the big sellers and with a number of AAA titles recently released we expect 2016 to be a bumper year. FIFA 17 is set to continue the impressive sales history of its predecessors, while premium driving sim Forza Horizon 3 is also assured a place at the top of the charts. Gears of War 4 sees the return of a major Xbox exclusive, one that’s already causing great excitement among gamers as it reboots the immensely popular combat franchise. For customers moving to the new Xbox One S there is also the opportunity to recommend a new 4K UHD TV, such as the 65” LG OLED TV B6, so that they get the most from the upgraded graphical capabilities of the console.

PC GAMING TREATS PC gaming continues to be an enormous source of potential revenue for retail, with the global value of the market in 2015 reported to be worth £31bn. Dedicated gaming PCs are essential items to stock and the ASUS ROG Gaming desktop is a great device for customers on a budget, as it boasts an Intel® Core™ i5-6400 CPU, matched with 8GB RAM and an NVIDIA GTX750 GPU all for £549.99. Gamers who prefer to keep their adventures mobile will find the Medion P6667 laptop, £549.99, with its 15.6” full HD display, Intel® Core™ i5 chip, and an NVIDIA GTX940MX, an excellent travelling companion. This can be improved further with the addition of an Archer T4U wireless dual-band USB adapter, which provides ultra-fast 1300mps wireless speeds for gaming on the go. Those searching for blisteringly fast, high-end performance will find an end to their quest in MSI’s Vortex G65 (£3,599.99). This desktop comes loaded with an Intel® Core™ i7 CPU, 16GB RAM, a 1TB HD and 256GB SSD for super-fast data access, and the NVIDIA GTX 980 GPU which makes light work of even the most graphically intensive game.

GAMING ACCESSORIES Many gamers already have their core rig in place, but this can be enhanced through great accessories. The Linx Vision tablet (£149) is a perfect example as not only is it a full Windows 10 tablet, thanks to the included controller case it also allows Xbox One owners to stream their games directly to the device so they can play anywhere in the house. Headsets, like the Monster Fatal1ty FXM 100, are always a favourite as they enable not only late night gaming, but also clear communication during frantic multiplayer action. Driving game fans will instantly fall in love with the Thrustmaster T500RS and TMX racing wheel, which offer precision control, tactile feedback, and an increased sense of being out there on the track.

VIRTUAL REALITY One of the fastest growing areas of consumer technology is Virtual Reality. Leading the way is the Facebook owned Oculus Rift headset, which offers incredible immersive gaming thanks to its low latency design. Customers who want the ultimate experience will also require a powerful PC to accompany the Oculus. We recommend the ASUS ROG Gaming desktop (£1,599) that comes with an Intel® Core™ i7 CPU, 16GB RAM, 2TB of storage, and an NVIDIA GTX1070 GPU which will render these new worlds in exquisite detail. Those looking to dip their toes in the virtual waters should be guided to the Zeiss One VR or Trust Exos 3D headsets. Both of these costeffective VR experiences act as a secure housing for a smartphone, which in turn creates the visuals - perfect for customers with smaller budgets who still want to explore the VR phenomena.

GLORIOUS GADGETS Drones have become hugely popular in the last year and make excellent presents for tech fans. The Parrot Mambo Minidrone (£99) is an easy to fly unit that can fire soft balls via an onboard cannon and pick up light objects with its grabber - handy for tabletop rescue missions. At the premium end of the market there’s the Parrot Bebop FPV pack (£599), which features the highly manoeuvrable Bebop 2 minidrone and a headset that displays video sent directly from the Bebop’s HD camera. With a range of 1.24 miles, it offers a spectacular, bird’s-eye view of the world. Exertis has just launched the new Star Wars collector’s edition of high performance, laser battling quadcopter drones, including the Star Wars Tie Fighter, X Wing Star Fighter, Speeder Bike and Millennium Falcon, which are all available now. Please have a look at page 39 for more information. Of course some people prefer their viewing to involve the latest movies, TV, and music, which is why the Roku range of media streaming devices is so popular. From the Streaming Stick (£39.99), to the Roku 3 (£79.99), each unit offers a wide choice of HD content from Netflix, NowTV, YouTube and many more. Those who want to create content of their own can use the revolutionary LG 360 Cam, which records video in a 360o radius and puts viewers right at the heart of the action. Audiophiles on the other hand will revel in the sumptuous tones of the Naim Mu-so Qb wireless music system. This multi-award winning device can stream music from a number of other devices, supports Spotify, and has a beautiful design to match its phenomenal sound quality.

MOBILE MARVELS There’s no doubt that smartphones have become one of the most desired products in technology, and none more so than the Samsung S7 and S7 Edge. Both of these devices have received five star reviews from all corners of the press, and are simply the finest handsets you can buy right now. A newly released rival for the throne though is Sony’s Xperia XZ, which features a waterproof design, excellent camera, and the legendary Sony build quality. Clever retailers will also keep a large stock of power banks, such as the TP-Link PB10400, near the tills as they make the perfect impulse buy for anyone with a smartphone or tablet. So there you have it, a whistle-stop tour of the products customers will be shopping for this Christmas. Be sure to contact your Exertis representative for more details and order early to ensure that this Christmas is one to remember for your customers and their families.

GAMING AND ENTERTAINMENT

BRINGING THE GAMING

EXPERIENCE TO LIFE Since the advent of home computing back in the 1980s, gaming peripherals have been an integral part of any player’s rig. In fact, this sector amounted to £4.2bn in UK sales across 2015 and the experts are forecasting the global gaming peripheral market to grow at a CAGR of 13.33% between 2016 and 2020. From additional controllers that enable gamers to play against friends, to steering wheels for driving sims or fast response monitors which ensure they never miss that vital shot, peripherals are an essential addition to the shelves of any store. Exertis understands the importance of gaming accessories like no one else, which is why we’ve carefully assembled the finest catalogue of products currently available. So, whether your customers are battle hardened elite players who demand the ultimate in performance and reliability, or humble entry-level gamers just beginning to explore the advantages that peripherals offer, we have something to meet their needs and help you level-up their experience.

A SIGHT FOR SORE EYES One of the most important parts of any setup is that of the display. After all, players will spend their entire gaming sessions staring directly at the monitor, so it needs to deliver pin-sharp graphics. For the smoothest performance customers should be advised to pair a G-SYNC compatible monitor with an NVIDIA GPU. G-SYNC is a ground-breaking new display technology that actually synchronizes the display’s refresh rates to the GPU. The result is stutter and lag free graphics that eliminate screen tearing and ensure games look ultradefined no matter how much is going on.

The two leading manufacturers in G-SYNC monitors are Acer and Asus, who account for nearly 85% of the market, most of which is in the high-end. This illustrates how serious gamers are happy to spend out on premium products if it affords them the performance advantages they seek. Acer’s Predator range of monitors is an excellent example, with the XB1 offering a 27” IPS display, 144Hz native refresh rate (essential for tear-free graphics), NVIDIA’s Ultra Low Motion Blur technology, alongside a futuristic aluminium frame design with a bezel-free screen so no space is wasted. G-SYNC models are not solely reserved for the elite level though, with AOC recently having introduced a mid-price collection for enthusiasts, while BenQ offers an affordable entry-level range.

HEARING IS BELIEVING Headsets are one of the most popular products in the accessories category and accounted for £15m of the PC gaming market in 2015. According to analysts GfK, this was an increase of 40% on the previous year. Part of the growth in the market can be attributed to the continued rise in popularity of eSports, with fans attempting to emulate their favourite stars (or become professionals themselves) by investing in high quality equipment. As the eSports market is now expected to be worth nearly £1.5bn by 2018, it should continue to provide a rich vein of sales opportunities for retail over the next few years. The Plantronics RIG® 500 range has been purpose built to cater for this sector, with the 500E eSports Edition headset featuring 7.1 Dolby technology, 24-bit audio, 40mm drivers, plus both vented and

SMART ‘WORKS WITH’ GIFTS FOR CHRISTMAS Smart Home technology has evolved to the point where many of the best Smart products available today happily interact with each other to provide a completely integrated experience. The benefits of this ‘Works With’ approach means that customers can arrive home on a cold day to find the heating has been automatically adjusted to the temperature they like, the hot water’s ready for a nice warm bath, the lights are on, the kettle is coming to the boil in the kitchen and the kids are in bed… ok maybe not the last one. All of this has been achieved due to the Smart Tech in their pocket, and homes working together to ensure that their owner arrives home to a warm inviting house. Until recently this would have been the preserve of science fiction, but now it’s a reality that people can buy on the high street.

CURATED SMART TECH COLLECTIONS

Device will allow a branded Digital Voice Assisted Smart Home to be created for these markets and simplify the Curated. The cooperative nature of ‘Works With’ also opens up exciting new potential for retailers as it helps to demystify which Smart Tech products ‘Work With’ others. The best way retailers can help consumers is to group and categorise products that work together into curated portfolios that take away the complexity and mystery, making them easy to find, understand and buy for consumers. It’s also key to highlight the advantages of interactive, intelligent devices that can take care of everyday tasks without the need for complicated apps, setups or maintenance. As a primer we’ve put together three example Curated Works With collections, each one focussing on a system with which UK consumers are already very familiar.

‘WORKS WITH’ NEST

In response to the rapidly growing consumer interest in Smart Home technology, many of the tech industry’s biggest players are introducing impressive new products and systems that ‘Work With’ each other. Amazon has just launched Echo that offers voice control for a huge number of tasks and compatible products, Apple’s HomeKit is another major release that is available, but not gaining much traction with the greater consumer customer base, while Google’s Home system will also be making its way over to the UK very soon. With Voice a key driver in this category, Exertis will also be the first in the UK with a commercial Alexa clone. Designed for ODM and specialist markets, such as service providers and property developers, The Echo

The Nest Smart Thermostat is easily one of the most recognisable Smart devices around, and because of this, it has an excellent range of compatible products. Alongside the Nest system, looking after central heating and reducing running costs with its clever monitoring, customers can also add Energenie Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) to individually control temperatures in different rooms. There’s also a choice between LIFX and Philips Hue smart lightbulbs, which allow users to set the times they come on and what colours they display. A Myfox security alarm, as well as protecting the home, tells the Nest when everyone is out, so that the heating is switched off, and adding a Logitech Harmony Remote control means customers can easily adjust all of these settings from a physical remote that controls many different devices.

‘WORKS WITH’ AMAZON ECHO

The newly released Amazon Echo is a Digital Voice Assistant that can operate a wide range of other products. This seems to be the most sophisticated device we’ve seen so far. When paired with Smart thermostats such as Nest or Hive by British Gas, it allows users to raise or lower temperatures just by speaking to the Echo. Smart lighting systems, such as LIFX and Philips Hue offer a real Star Trek moment when customers say ‘Lights on’ only to see a room immediately illuminated. Echo also works with the popular music streaming service Spotify (as well as Amazon’s own Prime Music). The new voice control feature is an added incentive for consumers to invest in Smart Tech and we’ve data supporting this. Alexa is typically purchased with at least one device, most commonly Philips Hue or a Smart Plug. Exertis has the largest range of Smart Tech products that work with Amazon Alexa devices, including leading brands such as Nest, Hive, Yale, Philips Hue and Honeywell.

THERMOSTATS

ARE HEATING UP THE SMART HOME MARKET

As the warm nights of summer gently fade, replaced instead by the bite of an approaching winter, people across the UK are beginning to awaken their boilers once more. This presents a timely opportunity for retailers to offer Smart Thermostats, as they can highlight to customers the convenience, versatility, and economical advantage of fitting these intelligent systems to control their heating. Up until very recently, the only way to automate the central heating of a property was to set a timer. Now, with Smart Thermostats, consumers have the ability to adjust the temperature of their home via a smartphone, tablet or PC. If they’re stuck late at work and don’t want the heating to be burning money in an empty house, they can simply open the app and turn it off. Some products even monitor the home in order to learn its owner’s preferred patterns, or can automatically reduce the heating if it detects the house is empty. Financially the advantages of fitting a Smart Thermostat are obvious, as the refined nature of the system means customers will make significant savings each winter. Modern units also support MultiZone heating (which provides different temperatures for different areas of the home) and Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs), both of which are now a legislated requirement in UK properties. Perhaps one of the most interesting selling points of Smart Thermostats is how they interact with other devices around the home. From the Smartwatch on a customer’s wrist, to the Amazon Echo voice control system, this new ‘Works With’ compatibility is a

true glimpse of the future, as devices work together to automatically enhance the home environment. For more details on this exciting new retail avenue be sure to read our ‘Works With’ feature on page 24.

THE SMART GUIDE TO SMART THERMOSTATS While it’s true that 70% of the Smart Thermostat market is concentrated in North America, and dominated by just a handful of manufacturers, Europe has seen strong growth across the last couple of years, with a more diverse range of products being adopted by consumers. To demystify the choices on offer, we’ve gathered together the best Smart Thermostat systems to recommend to your customers, so they’ll be warm and cosy long after the cold nights draw in.

NEST LABS SMART THERMOSTAT When people think of Smart Thermostats, Nest is the brand that usually comes to mind. This is hardly surprising as the small circular unit was the first product to package the idea of an intelligent thermostat into an elegant and easy to use device. This led to Google acquiring the company for around £2.7bn in 2014, and Nest continues to be one of the market leading products in this rapidly growing area.

The key to Nest’s appeal is simplicity. It’s small, easy to install, and works with most boilers, even older analogue models. An outer ring on the device rotates to let users select the temperature, while the central panel is a clear digital display showing the current settings. Underneath the hood though, there is a lot more going on.

Sensors detect how long it takes to heat a home, so the Nest can ensure that the environment is at the right temperature for the time users specify, rather than just turning on at that point. Nest also monitors the weather outside, so if a sudden winter heatwave occurs it will turn down the temperature, and vice versa for cold snaps in the middle of summer. The device even has environmental indicators to let users know when they are using energy saving settings.

Office Networks People Accessories

HIVE Office People Accessories Audio Hive is an innovative system from British Gas, which offers many of the same benefits as Nest. Users can control their heating via apps on Android, iOS and Windows Phone, while a clever Geolocation feature senses where their smartphone is so it can remind them to turn off the heating if they’ve gone out, or begin to heat the house as they draw near.

People Peripherals Audio Accessories Print Automation

The system can have different settings for each day, so customers can tailor the heating around their schedule, and there’s also a holiday mode where users let Hive know the dates they’re away and it reacts accordingly. One invaluable feature that could save consumers not only money but considerable hassle is Frost Protection. Hive monitors the temperature of the home and will automatically turn the heating on if it drops below 7ºC, thus drastically minimising the chances of the pipes freezing. The system, at £249 which includes installation by a British Gas engineer, also supports multi-zone heating, has an advanced package that also controls hot water, and is compatible with Hive lighting products that can be controlled remotely. This allows customers to make it look as if they’re at home when they’re away and put off any potential intruders.

Evo shows how those years of experience have been distilled into a simple, modular system that is easy to install and expand. EasySwitch analyses the home’s energy tariff and recommends the best value service currently available. This is due to the fact that consumers often sign up to an energy supplier and get an introductory rate for the first year. The rate then increases once the 12 months are over. Warmup’s system will advise customers about this and can even be set to automatically switch to a better supplier if so desired. It’s an interesting idea that Government figures say could save consumers over £210 a year. Add that to the already considerable financial advantages of a smart thermostat at just £199.92 per unit, and it will pay for itself in no time at all.

Black Friday is now usually accompanied in the UK by Cyber Monday, which is when the online offerings appear. Of course there’s no need to restrict the deals to just the Monday, as customers tend to be checking listings online once the press coverage of Black Friday begins. Website traffic can be notoriously high though, with so many people accessing your servers at the same time, so be sure to talk to your IT department about the expected increase in visitors so they can make provisions to ensure the site stays up at all times.

Computing Consumables Channel Services Business ConsumerMobile Microsoft Mobile Clearance MOBILE IS KEY IN 2016 On 25th November, retailers and customers alike will once again plunge into the frantic mayhem of Black Friday. For the past few years this day of big reductions has grown to become one both recognised and anticipated by British shoppers, with many large retailers using it to boost pre-Christmas sales.

The latest research from e-commerce consultants Salmon states that a large majority of online sales in 2016 will come via smartphones and tablets. This makes it essential that your website is optimised for these devices. Product information should be clear and accompanied by a high definition image, plus all the navigation around the site needs to be simple, easy, and offer no frustrations that would cause customers to close the tab and move on to a competitor.

In 2015, UK customers spent a massive £3.3bn across the Black Friday/ Cyber Monday weekend, which was an increase of around 35% on the previous year. Research from Gartner also reported that 31% of all Christmas shopping took place over the Black Friday weekend, and that only 37% of all yuletide gifts were purchased in December.

Digital Consumer Cloud Clearance Components

With such huge figures at stake it’s now more important than ever that retail is prepared for the onrushing crowds. So, to ensure that you make the most of the sales opportunities presented by Black Friday this year, we’ve put together some hints and tips on how to grab consumers’ attention amidst the madness.

EXTEND THE OFFERS

Components Computing Consumables

While the name Black Friday may well imply that everything happens on the one day, that’s not necessarily the case. In the last couple of years some retailers have spread the reductions on offer across a few days or even a week. Adopting this Black Five-Day model (running from Thursday 24th - Monday 28th November) allows customers to circumvent the ruck and maul of a sale day scrum, whilst also creating the chance for multiple visits if they see other offers that tempt them. It can also be used to stagger offers across different days, thus giving customers a legitimate reason to keep coming back.

For many UK consumers the first port of call when considering a purchase is to check out a company’s website. Retailers wanting to make the most of the Black Friday weekend need to quickly provide potential customers with all the information they need, while still in the browsing mode. This includes highlighting the deals on offer, which stores have them in stock, plus directions, contact details and opening times to the stores themselves.

From the basic models aimed at children, up to the HD camera loaded, sophisticated devices that can be controlled from miles away, these flying wonders have garnered tremendous interest among consumers, and that seems set to continue in the year ahead. The worldwide market for drones was estimated to be worth around £450m in 2014, but PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP is now predicting that this will expand at a fantastic rate to hit the £100bn mark by 2020. These extraordinary numbers are due to the fact that various industries - such as farming, Hollywood movies, and even insurance - have begun adopting the use of drones as part of their business.

Of course the chances are that the real draw for young people (and quite a few mature ones too) will be stoked primarily by the emergence of Drone Racing, which the Financial Times recently dubbed ‘the sport of the future’. Much like e-Sports, which has seen a meteoric rise in popularity and inspired fans to buy high-end PCs and peripherals to emulate their heroes, Drone Racing is fast developing a dedicated audience. The races are seen through the cameras of drones as they career around intricate courses at breakneck speed. It’s a thrilling spectacle and one that consumers can easily take part in without breaking the bank. Models like the Parrot Swing can give a taste of the speed and exhilaration of Drone Racing thanks to its ultra-responsive controls, boost mode for increased acceleration, and precision vertical landing capabilities. There’s even an auto pilot mode for those moments when things get a little tricky. Kaiser Baas also has an excellent collection of drones, including the Gamma and Theta models, which match spectacular aerial abilities with HD video recording. This makes it easier than ever for users to create amazing mini-movies that will wow viewers on YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter.
