WELCOME FROM EXERTIS Welcome to the summer edition of Future Mobile. Our Plug in to Exertis event at Twickenham Stadium was a great success with plenty to see and learn in our mobile technology suite. Indeed, we kicked off our session with some great insight into future market trends from analysts GfK. You’ll find some references to their thoughts in this issue. Both Samsung and Sony also provided their strategy on mobiles in business to packed audiences in their seminar presentations. Without question, we had great support from all our vendors with the latest handsets and accessories on display that transformed our suite into a megastore of opportunity. Indeed, feedback from our retailers and dealers was very positive. A big thank you to everyone for making it a truly memorable and valuable day. Turning to this issue, ransomware is seldom out of the news but it’s more often referenced to PCs than mobiles. Our article on page 16 looks at the threat to mobile users and what preventative measures they should take.
To place an order please call 01256 707 070 between 9am – 6pm Monday to Friday GSMA towards an e-SIM standard could well have a disruptive influence on the market. We take a look at both on page 12. Latest results from IDC and Gartner have some encouraging news on growth prospects following a rather slow 2016. It promises to be an interesting battle between Samsung and Apple, but there are also other brands out there challenging the duopoly and making their mark with some great products that are receiving good reviews from industry experts and consumers, as discussed on page 25. As you would expect, we provide an excellent choice at Exertis to cater for all types of requirements and we feature a British designed manufacturer in STK in this edition. Don’t forget to take a look at our regular news features, market stats, hot picks and products you can attach to make some extra margin on your sales. Lastly, well done to the team on winning the Mobile Industry B2B distributor of the year award and of course thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the read.

NEWS IN BRIEF

SMARTPHONE SHIPMENTS FORECAST TO RISE CCS Insight estimates that close to 2bn mobile phones will be shipped in 2017, a 2% rise from 2016. Worldwide demand is expected to continue at this rate, resulting in a staggering 10bn mobile phones being shipped over the next five years. Smartphones will continue to account for most sales, with an expected 1.53bn shipped in 2017. This figure will rise to 1.90bn in 2021, when smartphones will account for 92% of the total mobile phone market Their forecast reveals the strong progress that 4G LTE technology has made in mobile phones over the past decade. The company expects 68% of phones shipped in 2017 to be LTE-capable, climbing to 84% in 2020. The analyst maintained that 4G technology would also feature on more affordable handsets.
WHAT A LOAD OF NUISANCE BT claims 2m households have subscribed to its free, fixed line nuisance call blocking service, BT Call Protect in under three months. According to an article in Mobile News, BT has published the top five offending nuisance caller types for March 4–11 this year, recording 29,480,477 in that week alone. Top of the list were accident claims (41%), personal details scams (18.5%), PPI (6.4%), computer scams (12.6%), debt collection (7.5%) and other (14%).
PLUG IN TO EXERTIS With nearly 1,000 attendees from resellers and vendors, the “Plug in to Exertis” event was an outstanding success, living up to its billing as the channel event of the year. Twickenham Stadium was transformed into a showcase of technology from consumer through to enterprise with over 100 vendors exhibiting. “Plug in to Exertis” aimed to give resellers the opportunity to extend their knowledge in their areas of interest and to look at complementary technology areas that could benefit their business. Resellers could visit any of the five technology suites (AV, Consumer, Enterprise, Mobile and Print). Each area comprised vendor exhibition stands and presentation rooms. There were 17 different seminars on the agenda ranging from market trends and opportunities in AV and print to the growth of gaming, GDPR compliancy and mobile in business. GfK presented some interesting insights and trends in their seminar. The analyst highlighted that in only 5 years the standard size of a smartphone has risen to between 4.5” to 5.5” from below 4”. The larger screen size reflects the increasing use of the smartphone as the main device for media consumption and more frequently utilised online shopping method, maintained GfK.
BT predicts it can divert up to 1.6bn calls a year to a junk voice mail box. It is thought that PPI and accident claims companies alone are responsible for half of these calls.
ARE WEARABLES WEARING OFF? Last year the wearables market in Europe grew by 45% with sales of 13m units according to analyst GfK with Great Britain the largest source of sales. More than half of the market (53%) were health and fitness trackers, followed by smartwatches (32%). However, 2017 has seen one of the largest players in the market cutting its workforce and surveys in the US concluding that trackers neither aided fitness nor diets. Analysts believe that these devices need to be free from the smartphone and that connecting to a cellular network may well change the market again. But perhaps the biggest value for the wearables market is to consider what they can do with the data that they generate to help stimulate the market.

CONTACTLESS RETAIL PAYMENTS TO EXCEED $1 TRILLION IN TRANSACTION VALUE BY 2019 New data from leading fintech analysts, Juniper Research, forecasts that the global value of contactless transactions made via payment cards, mobile and wearables, will reach $1.3trillion by 2019, more than doubling from an estimated $590bn in 2017. According to the new research – Contactless Payments: NFC Handsets, Wearables & Payment Cards 2017-2021 – contactless card levels will continue to dominate transaction values, accounting for 80% of total contactless transactions in 2019. The research forecasts that contactless transactions via debit/credit cards will exceed $2 trillion globally by 2021. Juniper found that in 2016, while cards accounted for well over 90% of transactions by value in many European markets (for example, over 98% in the UK), in the US the position was reversed. Mobile wallets accounted for 90% of the total contactless transactions.

Ferguson joins from Brightstar where he spent three years, latterly as vice president OEM EMEA, responsible for setting supplier strategy, owning vendor relationships and driving the mobile budget across nine countries. Prior to that, he spent eight years with Vodafone as their commercial director defining and implementing the company’s global supplier strategy and conducting procurement for all terminal equipment including handsets and tablets. He has also worked for T-Mobile and BT in senior management roles.
MORE NEWS FROM EXERTIS • Exertis won the B2B distributor of the year awards at the Mobile Industry Awards hosted by Mobile Today magazine. The event was held on 1 June in London attended by vendors, retailers, networks, distributors and dealers with no fewer than twenty award categories. The Judges said “Within a competitive market, Exertis has showcased impressive growth across its B2B partners and they stood out for their innovation and adaptability.” • The LG G6 is now available exclusively from Exertis and has received good reviews from the industry. Tech Radar said “The G6 is a great phone from LG, one that pushes the brand back to the forefront of the smartphone pile in terms of design and screen.” PC Advisor commented “To cut to the chase, the LG G6 is an astonishing smartphone that easily holds its own against the best smartphones ever made.” C-Net said “The LG G6 is a gorgeous phone.” Stuff described it as a fantastic phone…LG’s best flagship phone to date.” • Also available from Exertis is the Huawei P10, P10 Lite and P8 Lite. The P10 has also received decent reviews with Trusted Review and Stuff both agreeing that it’s Huawei’s best phone to date.
DIGITAL ASSISTANTS TO EXCEED WORLD POPULATION BY 2021 The global native digital assistant installed base is set to exceed 7.5bn active devices by 2021, claims research and consulting firm Ovum in its Digital Assistant and Voice AI-Capable Device Forecast for 2016 to 2021. Google Assistant will dominate the voice AI-Capable Device market with 23.3% market share, followed by Samsung’s Bixby (14.5%), Apple’s Siri (13.1%), Amazon’s Alexa (3.9%), and Microsoft’s Cortana (2.3%). Smartphones and tablets clearly lead the voice AI-Capable Device market, with 3.5bn active devices in 2016, most of which use Google Now and Apple Siri. However, the use of AI in conjunction with other devices greatly increases consumer engagement and is set to unlock new opportunities, particularly in the home. Ovum expects an exponential uptake of voice AI capabilities among new devices, including wearable, smart home, and TV devices, with a combined installed base of 1.63bn active devices in 2021, a tenfold increase on 2016. Despite the hype surrounding AI-connected speakers, Ovum sees TV devices (smart TVs, set-top boxes, and media streamers) as offering a larger opportunity, estimated to account for 57% of the 2021 installed base. MOBILE
TWO INITIATIVES THAT COULD NOTICEABLY DISRUPT THE MOBILE MARKET
TEXT-TO-SWITCH
In addition, Ofcom’s research also suggested that consumers would prefer the new system as mobile customers would no longer have to speak to the provider they wish to leave. According to Ofcom this was one of the barriers to change with around 2.5m people experiencing at least one major problem when switching (38%). These included difficulties contacting their current provider (11%), cancelling their service (10%) or keeping their phone number (10%). At present, anyone wishing to switch to a new mobile provider must contact their current supplier to inform them of their decision. In turn, they need to obtain a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) from their current provider and give this to the new provider if they wish to keep their existing phone number. A switch without a port requires the customer to stop the old service and start a new service (similar to taking out a new service and contract for the first time).
Ofcom is planning to force mobile firms to make it easier, quicker and cheaper to change contracts. Under the proposed plans, consumers and businesses would simply send a free text message to the provider they wish to leave. The proposal means that the regulator’s previously preferred option (where responsibility for the switch was placed entirely in the hands of the new provider) is being dropped on the basis that it was more expensive for the industry with mobile operators potentially facing higher costs and could have led to increased bills. Ofcom estimated that Text-to-switch would cost the industry an estimated £44m over ten years, compared with £87m for a one-stop process.
Under the new proposal, the process would be the same regardless of whether the customer was keeping the same number with either a PAC or cancellation code requested as required. To request their unique switching code, people would text one of two memorable short codes, dependent on their decision to keep their number or cancel. All mobile providers would be required to use the same short codes. The losing provider would immediately respond by text with either the relevant number transfer code (PAC), or with a cancellation code. The text reply must also include important information relating to any early termination charges, outstanding handset costs, or payas-you-go credit balances say Ofcom.
The recent proposals by Ofcom in how users can change contracts and the continuing push by GSMA towards an e-SIM standard could mean the mobile industry is due for a shakeup that no doubt benefits the consumer but also presents challenges and opportunities for others in the industry.

However, Carphone Warehouse marketing director Dean Kramer welcomed the proposals, according to research from the retailer “One in four people believe switching networks is too complicated. Our customers save an average of £152 when changing provider so we hope that the proposal is adopted by the industry, making it easier for everyone to get a better deal,” Kramer added. Alex Neill, Which? Managing Director of Home Products and Services, concurred with Three stating “It should be much simpler for people to quickly switch their mobile provider… this proposal seems to still require consumers to do a lot of the leg work. In all other major markets, the switching process is the responsibility of the company gaining a new customer because this helps to promote competition and a better customer experience.” Consultation on the proposals is open until 30th June with a final decision expected by the autumn of this year.
IS E-SIM ON THE CUSP OF WIDER ADOPTION? The term e-SIM relates to a new standard being specified and marketed by the GSMA – the association that represents network operators and other mobile entities. However, it has potential repercussions and opportunities for some in the mobile industry. The current SIM card can be removed and enables the user to switch from one phone to another whilst retaining the same number. It identifies a user to the network and identifies the user network to a handset. An e-SIM on the other hand comes in the form of an integrated SIM chip within a device, one that cannot and need not be removed from it. By creating an e-SIM profile, a user can link a phone number, network account and the chosen mobile device. Once enabled, the end user can select from multiple mobile networks without physically changing the SIM card. Information on the e-SIM can be rewritable by all operators meaning that a user can easily decide to change operator without delay and without the need of physically swapping from one SIM to another. Even changing from a pay-as-you-go plan to a contracted one could be simpler. In addition, it should be easier to swap devices as some require a micro or nano card. With e-SIM, you would just register the new device.
A unique switching code would be valid for 30 days. A customer would be able to pass the code on to their new provider at the point they place an order for their new service, without the need for a further conversation. Providers would also be required to publish and promote clear guidance to help customers follow the new process and make informed switching decisions. Ofcom also proposes to ban mobile providers from charging for notice periods running after the switch dates which they estimated would save customers around £10m a year. Lindsey Fussell, Ofcom’s Consumer Group Director, said: “We want people and businesses to benefit from simpler, speedier mobile switching, making it easier for them to vote with their feet and take advantage of choice in the market. Our ‘text-to-switch’ plans would give greater control to mobile customers about when and how they switch, and prevent losing providers from delaying and frustrating the switching process.” Response from the industry has been mixed. Mobile News reported two different views with a Three spokesperson commenting “We are disappointed that Ofcom is not proposing a move to gaining provider led (GPL) switching. It is clear that having the gaining provider managing the switch will provide the greatest benefit to consumers and enable real ease of switching. Only under GPL can you ensure that the best deals are not kept for consumers who wish to leave their existing network.”
e-SIM also has implications for the IoT market. Many of these devices are small, for example wearables, but still need to perform a range of functions and ideally be equipped with stand-alone mobile connectivity. This is a solution which should be of interest to mobile operators that want to take a lead in the growing IoT space. The ability to provide convergent offers with multiple devices under a single contract has interesting opportunities. There are other clear benefits to e-SIM technology. Manufacturers are constantly looking at creating smaller, sleeker designs without affecting functionality. Doing away with a SIM slot aids that as well as potentially increasing the reliability of the device with one fewer opening for water and dust. It will also aid security as theft of traditional SIMs will be a thing of the past. However, it also clearly puts the consumer in a better position. MNO and MVNOs will need to offer great service, support and incentives to keep their customers from moving to a new supplier and mobile device manufacturers may even gain more control of the relationship with their customer. As e-SIM negates the need to visit a store to change operators, there is one fewer influencing touch point available. Although mass adoption is still to come, e-SIM has the potential to be disruptive and a possible game-changer for the industry. MOBILE PHONES PRESENT AN INCREASING
OPPORTUNITY FOR
RANSOMWARE ATTACKS
Ransomware has been brought to the public’s attention with the recent WannaCry attack which hit multiple countries and different organisations including the NHS in the UK. It has been a growing trend for some time as highlighted in our sister publication Future Business even before that incident took place. Typically, it has been targeted at PCs using the most widespread form of ransomware known as Cryptolocker. Criminals remotely access a victim’s computer and lock all the files using encryption software and then demand payment for the release of the files, either for money or more usually by Bitcoin to avoid detection. The Blocker, another form of ransomware and as the name suggests, either blocks browsers or operating systems, is much more prevalent with Android phone users. As many smartphone users back-up their data to a cloud service, encryption isn’t the first choice of ransomware for such devices. Indeed on mobiles, it’s Blockers to prevent the use of mobile apps that are widely deployed and account for 99% of the mobile ransomware market according to Kaspersky. Whilst more widely attributed to PCs, cybercriminals certainly aren’t ignoring the opportunity to do the same with the ubiquitous smartphone. Whilst WannaCry does not affect mobile phones because it is an attack on users of Microsoft XP or earlier versions of Windows, there has been increasing evidence and reports of ransomware attacks on the Android mobile platform.

FUTURE
17 3
A GROWING TREND Indeed a number of the well-known security vendors have been posting reports and articles on the internet relating to ransomware on mobile devices for the past couple of years. According to Check Point, the first ransomware attack on a phone occurred in 2013 but until quite recently has been confined to small numbers of victims, primarily in Eastern Europe. Now, the company says, the threat has gained momentum in other countries including the US. Trend Micro said in a research report that Android ransomware attacks grew 15 times higher in June 2016 than in April 2015. This increase was also noted by Kaspersky in their report this time last year which found that almost four times as many users were being attacked by mobile ransomware than in the previous year. The countries where mobile users were most affected were Germany, Canada, UK and the US, in that order. Ransomware viruses on mobiles have tended to exploit the names of authorities to inflict fear and add to the authenticity of the demand. Users are faced with a demand based on a false claim that they have been watching illicit material or have infringed copyright. Again, the type of payment demanded is generally quite small and not in the form of cash. However, in a numbers game, small amounts can add up to a great deal. According to Ericsson, 70% of the world’s population will be using a smartphone by 2020. This increasingly large target audience is ideal for cybercriminals because people are storing larger amounts of sensitive, personal data on their smartphones, which means, unless it’s backed up, they are quite likely to pay a ransom to recover their threatened data. Two other forms of ransomware have been reported on mobile phones. One is based on a text message scam which entices the user to open a link that launches a screen-locking message and the other hijacks the PIN number
CONNECTED DEVICES ALSO PRESENT A THREAT Many experts believe that ransomware will be equally troublesome on connected watches, fitness trackers and Smart TVs. Moreover, as IoT devices proliferate both in the home and in industry, additional security layers will have to be incorporated to withstand the vulnerabilities from ever increasing connectivity. Ultimately, it will require manufacturers to install better security in their products and users to be vigilant in installing security updates. As smart home devices become more mainstream, their convenience will need to be balanced by the security risk of access to a home network or a connected device. By and large, authorities recommend not to pay any ransom demands because it fuels the appetite of cybercriminals to commit such offences. Indeed, there is no guarantee that if the ransom is paid, a user’s smartphone will be restored but it has become such an important device in daily life that payment may seem to be the only option.
PREVENTION AND COMMON SENSE REQUIRED So what can users do to protect themselves against ransomware on their mobile phone? There are some simple steps that can be taken. Regularly updating their software with the latest operating system and the newest versions of mobile apps. These have usually fixed any known vulnerabilities. With older smartphones, this may prove troublesome because even with the extra memory afforded by an SD card, it’s often difficult to have the required amount of space to download the latest version. In some cases, a new phone might be required! Backing up their files is of course best practice.
Downloading anything from untrusted sources is also best avoided. Android phones can use apps from other sources but security experts usually recommend sticking to the Google Playstore to take advantage of the security measures Google takes to check the safety of the software. Just like advice given to PC users, avoid clicking on unknown links on e-mails. Equally the same caution applies for text messages. Finally, there are a number of security packages in place that are designed to help protect your mobile phone. Although the scale of the Android malware isn’t as large as on Windows PCs, the more open nature of the Android operating system compared with iOS makes it susceptible to attacks so prevention using anti-virus software is recommended. Moreover, the best mobile antivirus apps offer not only first class malware detection and prevention, but also a range of privacy and anti-theft features that include phone locking or wiping of data on the handset. Some can even take photo recordings of the thieves, or if simply lost help locate the handset and display a message on the lost phone’s screen, providing instructions on how to make contact to return the phone. Another useful feature commonly found is call blocking and some suites include the ability to password protect access to the web browser, particularly useful if the phone is shared with family members. Sony Mobile: The Perfect Choice for Business Professionals Rob Hunt, head of distribution, retail and indirect at Sony explains why Sony mobile provides the perfect choice for business professionals.
Sony has come off the back of a very positive MWC, what was the reason for that? It was our most successful MWC, winning 24 awards! The new XZ Premium won MWC phone of the show, which is great news for Sony, and shows that we have regained our tech leadership in mobile. The feedback from MWC highlighted that Sony has a real story to tell with clear points of difference to our competition. The XZ Premium has a 4k HDR screen which is new technology on TVs, let alone mobiles. It’s also loaded with lots of great features like super slo-mo and predictive capture camera technology that has only been seen in high end cameras until now and is genuinely new. Indeed our entire portfolio has a great look and feel with very strong specs to suit consumers and business and any budget. The mobile industry is becoming increasingly more competitive, how has Sony differentiated itself from the competition? Whilst the XZ Premium is our flagship device, we now have many of its features evident all the way down the range, from the new L1, to XA1 (that has a 23mp camera and sits in the £200-250 SRP price range) to the XZ and XZ Premium. Our products have a unique DNA that looks and feels different to the rest of the market. Perhaps most importantly though, we have the Sony corporation behind us, with one of the most recognisable and highly regarded brands in the world, with all its heritage of innovation and quality across multiple product categories. Add that to our strength in Pictures and Music, and
we are the only company that has such a diverse and successful portfolio of propositions that can wrap around mobile devices. Consequently, we have the ability to deliver bespoke Sony bundles for our customers that clearly differentiate us in the market. The XZ Premium has been launched recently with a lot of hype around this phone in the press. Tell us a little bit more about this flagship device. Firstly, it looks and feels great in the hand. A sleek loop designed masterpiece, that’s wrapped in Gorilla Glass 5, with the best specifications of any device in the world; a 4K HDR screen with 1 billion colour iterations; the ability to capture super slo-mo video at 960fps (4 times slower than anything else on the market); the latest Qualcomm 835 Snapdragon processor that makes it so fast; the ability to deliver super-fast streaming (up to 1Gbps download speeds); High Res audio sound quality; new battery technology that learns how you use your phone and adapts to your behaviour, and won’t over-charge your battery, extending the life of your device by not eroding the lithium battery inside. The list goes on... Android is becoming an increasingly more common platform within the Enterprise domain, how are Sony phones taking advantage of this opportunity? Google has caught up with Apple in terms of Android’s overall readiness for use by enterprises, most notably in security and manageability, and is actually now the biggest OS in Enterprise. Sony is the number 2 Android brand in the UK and we have a unique device management tool called the ‘Xperia Cloud

BATTLE OF THE BRANDS Global market share figures provided by analysts like IDC and Gartner often don’t reflect fully what might be happening in a local market. However, it’s clear from the first quarter results for 2017 that the dominance of Apple and Samsung on a global basis continues and that the market opportunity may prove better this year than last. According to IDC in their phone tracker report, worldwide smartphone shipments grew by 4.3% with 347.4m shipped. That was slightly different to Gartner that reported a 9.1% year on year growth with 380m units shipped. Still close enough to get the picture. Ryan Reith, IDC programme vice president said: “There is no question that 2016 was a pivotal year for the industry as growth dipped to low single digits for the first time. However, we believe the industry will show some rebound in 2017, and the strong first quarter results certainly support this argument”. Both analysts seem to put a positive spin on the market but disagree in certain areas. Gartner indicated that mobile phone buyers are spending more to get a better phone, resulting in the rise in average selling prices of types of phones. IDC’s research manager Anthony Scarsells said “Despite all the popularity and media hype around premium devices, we continue to witness a shift in many companies’ portfolios geared towards affordable devices with premium-type styling compared with flagship models. Companies have started to implement a single premium design language that ultimately blurs the lines between the high-end and the low-end, allowing the average consumer to jump on the brand without a hefty upfront investment.” One thing they do agree on is the rise of Chinese manufacturers particularly in emerging and their own home markets. Huawei, OPPO and Vivo have all outpaced market growth for the past few quarters and this is likely to continue in new territories. Gartner said “The top three Chinese smartphone manufacturers are driving sales with their competitively priced, high quality smartphones equipped with innovative features”. However, it’s the big two that still dominate the worldwide market share according to the analysts.

CAN OTHER BRANDS IMPACT THE DUOPOLY? Apple hasn’t been able to capitalise on some of the issues Samsung faced with the Galaxy Note 7 but it will be an interesting contest when the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the iPhone 8 are both on the market, although Samsung will have a head start. However, this year is the iPhone’s 10th birthday and there is increased speculation that the company will try to enthuse customers with a number of new features and specifications to mark the occasion after keeping the hardware design largely unchanged in recent versions. In the past Android and iPhone customers have pretty much remained with their chosen ecosystem so something extraordinary will be needed to drastically change that picture.

MARKET SHARE, Q1 2017 Company
In the UK, a Statista 2017 survey of smartphone brands in UK households showed Apple (48%) with a market share lead over Samsung (34%). That illustrates the dominance of the big two, albeit different to the worldwide picture in brand leadership, so is it possible for other brands to make headway? Some analysts believe so. A GfK Tech 360 study showed that in Q4 2016, 79% of sales went to Apple and Samsung. However, of those 75% considered a device other than an Apple or Samsung (6.7m) and 68% of those intending to purchase were open to an alternative brand.
