Category 5e : Frequency < 100 MHz - Throughput 10 / 100 Mbps / 1 Gbps and 2,5 Gbps* Category 6 : Frequency < 250 MHz - Throughput 10 / 100 Mbps / 1 Gbps and 5 Gbps* Category 6A : Frequency < 500 MHz - Throughput 10 / 100 Mbps / 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps Category 7 : Frequency < 600 MHz - Throughput 10 / 100 Mbps / 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps * according to the IEEE 802.3bz standard

Why add a shield?

With shielded patch cables, electromagnetic perturbations are 10 times less with a foil shielding (F) and 100 times less with a braided shielding (S).

The distance of an Ethernet cable is limited to 100 meters. A ﬁber optic cable can reach up to a 20,000 m. distance and even more.

The composition of a fiber optic cable

The fiber optic cable consists in a glass core coated by a reflective cladding. The main feature of fiber is to act like a tube through which light can travel. In IT applications, fiber is used to transmit data.

The most popular connectors ST connectors remind of BNC connectors ; ST connectors lock by a twist-on mechanism (bayonet).

ST connectors used to be very popular on the market, but tend to be replaced more and more by SC and LC connectors.

Straight Tip

Compatible with the IEC 61754-2 standard. SC Subscriber connector are currently the most widely used connectors. They are mainly used with active devices for all kinds of applications (Ethernet, Fiberchannel...) SC connectors have many beneﬁts compared to ST connectors: The ferrule peaks out just a little, reducing the risk of contamination. The "pull-proof" design helps to stop the connectors from disconnecting. The square section allows a better grip and makes it easier to insert into the connector. Compatible with the IEC 61754-4 standard.

Subscrider Connector

The dual-ﬁber LC connector has a 1.25-mm ceramic ferrule and a plastic body.

The ﬁbers are spaced out every 6.25 mm. Created by AVAYA, the dual-ﬁber LC connector is shorter than others, while implementing the same technology. Compatible with the IEC 61754-20 standard.

What is an audio/video cable? 1

Jack

Jack are standard connectors, widely used for headphones, microphones and semi-professional musical instruments. Jack exist in three different sizes: 2.5 mm - 3.5 mm - 6.35 mm. The most widely used are those of 3.5 and 6.35 mm. FEMALE JACK (F)

• The standard jack is 6.35 mm in diameter. • The mini jack is 3.5 mm in diameter, and is used for mobile devices such as MP3 players or camcorders. Mini jack can be mono (2 contacts) or stereo (3 contacts). Some devices are connected by stereo jack, even if they use mono signals, because stereo jack are more compact and less expensive than XLR plugs. • The mini jack of 3.5 mm used for IT applications can be colour coded (PC99): The HP stereo input is green, the microphone input (usually ampliﬁed) is red, and the line input (not ampliﬁed) is blue.

MALE JACK (M)

• There is also a 4-pin mini-jack, which combines a stereo output and a microphone input. However, this jack is not a standard connector, and is usually dedicated to laptops. It is important to check if the jack is compatible with your device.

How is a VGA cable assembled?

Depending on the number of cables that are added to the 3 existing coaxial cables which carry the 3 primary colours, the PC graphic host adapter receives a certain amount of information from the screen. The latest release of the Display Data Channel standard (DDC2B) can carry the following information on Pins 11/12/15:

• Manufacturer's name • Product name • Colour depth

For the screens that support 16/9, 16/10 or higher resolutions, and to obtain optimum viewing comfort, it is recommended to use a 3 + 9 cable.

What is a DisplayPort cable ? 1

About DisplayPort

DisplayPort is a digital interface designed to connect a videosource to a display device. The DisplayPort 1.1 previous standard offered an up to 10.8 Gbps data rate over 4 channels with a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600 (equivalent to DVI Dual Link) at a 3-meter distance, which could scale up to Full HD (1080p) at 15 meters. DisplayPort 1.2 provides an up to 3840 x 2160 resolution, a 21.6 Gbps data rate over 4 channels, as well as a 5th channel. Currently used to connect a PC graphic card to a monitor, the DisplayPort interface could transmit additional data (touch screen, webcam, microphone applications) if the 5th channel was used. The available bandwidth of DisplayPort 1.2 makes it possible to use 3D stereo screens, or to connect up to 4 screens at a 1920 x 1200 resolution for IT applications.

The DisplayPort connector is easy to connect, and is securely linked to the graphics card connector.

The 1.2 revision has also developed a mini DisplayPort connector, which is widely used on the latest-generation of Apple® computers. Moreover, the mini DisplayPort interface offers Ultra HD resolution, 3D technology and an auxiliary channel @ 720Mbps.

Mini DisplayPort converters

When to use a "passive" or "active" DisplayPort converter? When you wish to work with 2 mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort graphic outputs at least, it is recommended to use active converters. On the other hand, for any installations including a single mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort graphic output, it is recommended to use a passive converter, which is less expensive. For example, if your computer has a graphic card equipped with 2 mini DisplayPort and one HDMI® outputs, and you wish to connect 3 HDMI® screens, you'll need 2 mini DisplayPort to HDMI® active converters and a traditional HDMI® link. If, in the same conﬁguration, you wish to use only one mini DisplayPort output to a DVI screen and an HDMI® screen, you'll need a mini DisplayPort to DVI passive converter and a traditional HDMI® link.

HDMI® breakthroughs

The Ethernet standard used in the HDMI 1.4 version makes it possible to connect TV sets and devices to a DSL modem, so that you can browse the Internet on your TV screen, play online gaming sessions and update your Blu-Ray disks.

Subsequently, HDMI 1.1 and 1.2 were introduced, bringing 8-channel audio support for CD and DVDs. The HDMI 1.3 standard brought many other developments, such as enhanced bandwidth (10.2 Gbps), 48-bit colour gamut, and Dolby True HD & DTS HD support, with no signal loss. This High Speed technology provides 3D, 4K and Ultra HD resolutions.

The HDMI standard is in constant evolution. In the beginning, there was HDMI 1.0, with Full HD, a 4. 9 Gbps bandwidth and a 24-bit colour gamut.

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a Plug & Play interface, used to connect IT devices to a computer for serial communication. The bus supports up to 127 devices simultaneously.

The new "Type C" connector: One of the main features of this connector is its ability to be plugged both ways, indifferently. The USB Type C connector is small (like a micro B connector) and is meant to be universal. One should make the difference between USB 3.1 technology and the Type C connector. Lots of USB 2.0 devices can be equipped with Type C connectors.

• Thunderbolt is faster. FireWire (IEEE 1394a/IEEE 1394b)

• FireWire is the commercial name commonly used for this multiplexed interface developed by Apple®. It has two implementations, IEEE 1394a @ 400 Mbps and IEEE 1394b @ 800 Mbps. • This interface provides high speed data transfer (IEEE 1394a=400Mbps / IEEE 1394b=800Mbps) in real time. • Data and command signals are sent altogether. • Wholly Plug & Play, FireWire can be used to connect all kinds of bandwidth-intensive devices, such as HDDs and digital camcorders. • FireWire can connect up to 63 peripherals in a tree or daisy-chain topology, and supports multiple hosts per bus.
