WELCOME FROM EXERTIS Let’s start with our fantastic Plug in to Exertis channel event held recently at the Silverstone Circuit. A record attendance of 1,250 visitors with 116 vendors showcasing the latest technology and services in business, AV, enterprise and consumer. For those of you that attended, a big thank you for spending the day with us. There was certainly plenty on offer, no matter what kind of customers you target. For those that missed it, we have a full report on pages 19-21. We are also producing a video tour of the event which will be available on our Plug in News site. Whilst I am sure that our Plug in to Exertis event provided some great ideas to generate new business, our “how to accelerate your business with Exertis” article on page 13 has a few more that perhaps you can take advantage of in the future. Our credit accelerator programme is ideal for our smaller resellers whilst migration to Windows 10 and digital signage are good opportunities to take to your customers. Of course, you can also make use of any of our services to complement your own offering. Talking of services, our Device-as-Service (DaaS) proposition has been extended to cover laptops and tablets as well as smartphones. More and more companies are looking at ways to ensure their employees have access to the latest technology. It’s a great way to retain and recruit the best people
as well as avoiding large capital investments as indicated on pages 28-29. Naturally, in our industry, there’s always something new and exciting to look forward to. There has been competition between LED, LCD and OLED for quite a few years. Now we have Transparent OLED in the mix, creating an even greater “wow” factor when it comes to digital signage as we discuss on page 16. We also have Android Q to look forward to. As the home of Android for smartphones, that’s always of great interest. We’re now into Beta 3 of the new operating system and it seems Google has three focus areas as highlighted on pages 32-33. Of course, security is always an on-going concern for companies and Wi-Fi networks present particular problems. We look at some of the steps that companies can take to bolster their security on page 25. Our Wi-Fi and security team are highly experienced and ready to help with the best solutions in this area. Don’t forget our regular news items, market stats and hot picks. So, plenty to read and act upon. Thank you for your continued support.

EXERTIS GAINS AEO STATUS Exertis has been awarded the coveted Authorised Economic Operator (AEO(C)) status for customs activities by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), joining an elite group of around 700 UK businesses that hold this accreditation. AEO is an internationally recognised “kite mark” which highlights organisations deemed to be a “safe” operator with regards to imports and exports. Many large organisations insist on the standard as an integral part of any trading partnership. The UK government has already advised that AEO will remain post Brexit and it is possible that EU partners will look to UK businesses to hold AEO accreditation to continue trading. There are AEO equivalents worldwide and it is possible that this standard will become more important if the UK leaves the EU since it will be regarded as a third country. Richard Hinds, Exertis UK&I, chief operating officer said, “AEO status effectively demonstrates that our role within the international supply chain is secure and that our customs controls and processes are efficient, compliant and meet international standards. As a “trusted trader” we will have quicker access to numerous simplified customs procedures and authorisations and, in some cases, the right to fasttrack our shipments through customs.”
Panda’s intelligent cybersecurity platform, based on Big Data and AI, combines next-generation protection and detection, and remediation technologies with the ability to discover and resolve system and application vulnerabilities through continuous monitoring of the network. Jason Hill, Exertis security and wireless sales director, said “We are pleased to be able to offer our resellers next-gen security from Panda. Cybersecurity remains a key threat specifically for SMEs, with criminals adopting more sophisticated ways to infiltrate and cause disruption to companies. Panda provides endpoint protection for devices and the IT infrastructure with an advanced, dynamic, ever-evolving cyber security model based on the principles of artificial intelligence.” Panda Security are rated by Gartner as an Endpoint Protection Visionary in their most recent report.

5G TO HAVE HUGE IMPACT ON SMART CITIES 5G deployments in urban environments could spur economic growth to the tune of US $17tn by 2035, according to a new study by ABI Research, which was commissioned by InterDigital. CYBER SECURITY STILL MAJOR CONCERN A report from Hiscox, a cyber Insurance specialist, comparing businesses of varying sizes across seven countries found that British firms had the lowest cyber security budgets. Companies in the UK spent on average less than £690,000 on digital security, compared to the £1.12m cross-country average. Following the impact of the 2017 WannaCry virus, the NHS has pledged £150m in additional cyber security spending over the next three years. Plans to tighten security include ensuring all health and care trusts can access Windows 10 software, rolling out a £21m upgrade to firewalls and network infrastructure, and imbuing the Care Quality Commission regulator with powers to inspect cyber and data security standards.

GARTNER AND IDC AGREE ON PC SHIPMENTS FALL SOFT GROWTH PREDICTED IN 2020 FOR SMARTPHONES Analysts Canalys have forecast that smart phone shipments will decline 3.1% in 2019 to 1.35bn units but bounce back in 2020 rising by 3.4% to 1.39bn. Canalys anticipates that 5G and other hardware innovations will be positive drivers for consumer demand, although consumers will continue to hold onto phones for longer. https://www.canalys.com/newsroom
The PC market is still in decline, the number of PC shipments fell to 58.5m in Q1 2019, according to research firms Gartner and IDC. CREATING THE
“WOW”
FACTOR WITH TRANSPARENT
OLED DISPLAY
Competition between LED, LCD and OLED has been a feature for quite a few years. Both display types can be found in many different product areas from monitors and TVs to mobile phones and cameras. As you would expect, technology doesn’t stand still and we now have Transparent OLED screens coming onto the market, providing an exciting new opportunity in digital signage and display technology. However, before we look at what this will mean for business and consumers, it’s worthwhile looking at the differences between LED, LCD and OLED and their respective advantages. Light-emitting diode (LED) is the most common type of display used commercially. It emits light when an electric current passes through it, without producing heat, using a panel of LEDs as the light source. The light generated is projected in one direction, which does away with the need to use diffusers and reflectors. A LED display uses an array of light-emitting diodes as pixels for a video display. The biggest advantage of the LED display is its efficient and low-energy consumption, which is particularly useful for handhelds and chargeable devices such as mobile phones and tablets. Besides their power efficiency, LEDs produce more brilliance and greater light intensity. Their brightness enables them to be used outdoors for a variety of advertising and signage as well as the lighting source found in many of today’s TVs. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode and the technology has been deployed in TVs predominantly from LG. OLED eliminates the need for a backlight or enclosure as found in standard Transparent LCD screens. Transparent OLED screens are made up of millions of pixels that each emit their own individual light. Put simply, LED LCD screens use a backlight to illuminate the pixels whilst OLED’s pixels actually produce their own light. OLED is the only technology that is capable of producing absolute blacks and extremely bright whites on a per-pixel basis, something not achievable with LCD. However, LCD dominates the market because it’s cheaper to manufacture and whilst it delivers excellent picture quality, OLED provides incredible contrast ratio. Much depends on personal preference but OLED already features in the flagship smartphones and in TVs.
SEEING IS BELIEVING As the name might suggest, Transparent OLED enables viewers to see what is shown on the screen whilst still being able to see through it. Providing much higher transparency (38%) than conventional LCD transparent displays, it enables dynamic or interactive content such as images, text and video to be overlayed onto real-life objects placed behind the transparent screen. LG’s OLED technology, featuring selflighting pixels, maintains accurate and vivid colours even when the display becomes transparent. It brings content to life, making it difficult for people to separate content from the real objects placed behind the screen. Only when viewed from a side angle is the content readily distinguishable from the actual object. LG Transparent OLED signage also delivers awe-inspiring picture quality in all parts of the screen, even from wide viewing angles. Using LG Transparent OLED signage, AR effects can be incorporated. Having supplemental information can help provide a better understanding as well as an impressive “wow” factor. With Touch screen capabilities that drive interactivity with viewers, there are a huge range of commercial applications from hospitality and retail to museums and visitor attractions as well as outdoor venues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SStiSnkQTUA LG Transparent OLED signage can be installed in various ways to fit into existing structures and spaces. A single stand-alone type is available, as well as ceiling and wall-mount variations. Displays can also be tiled together to make an immersive screen, enabling installation on large show-windows. For information on the latest Transparent OLED displays, contact your account manager or email: Nevil.Botschinsky@exertis.co.uk

FROM PLUG IN TO EXERTIS
Paul Bryan, Exertis UK & I Managing Director, addresses a packed audience of retailers and resellers. Our third Plug in to Exertis channel event was held last month at Silverstone Circuit. We said it was going to be bigger and better and it certainly was. A record attendance of 1,250 visitors. Our four dedicated exhibition areas focused on business, AV, enterprise and consumer solutions were seen by 740 resellers and retailers from across the UK. With 116 vendors featured at the event, we turned Silverstone into a technology showcase, featuring the latest products and solutions. We also hosted ten different seminars on a wide range of topics delivered by industry experts. Analysts GfK talked about the revolution in retail and CONTEXT on digital transformation and its place in resellers’ plans for growth in 2019. There were also sessions from market leading vendors, Microsoft, Dell and Samsung. Microsoft spoke on the topical subject of “Making the Shift to the Modern Workplace”, Dell EMC focused on their partnership with McClaren, and Samsung demonstrated how it’s possible to create margin in mobile. In addition, security vendor ESET stole the show with a fantastically attended seminar on "How to hack a police station", and creative agency ‘Rewind’ also drew crowds with their session on bringing VR into the B2B world. We also took the opportunity to highlight aspects of our services for customers. One seminar focused on our supply chain operations and the other on e-commerce and digital opportunities. In the consumer area, show floor features included a gaming zone complete with ambient in-game lighting, a premium audio zone and a fully fitted Smart Tech house. Our business area included the latest in computing, print, mobile and components. The AV area was boosted by the additional vendors following our integration of
Stampede into the business and included a range of solutions from digital signage and video wall control to audio, collaboration and emerging technologies like drones. Finally, our enterprise area highlighted solutions ranging from server, storage, networking and HCI to security, wireless, UC, software and the cloud. Paul Bryan, Exertis UK & I Managing Director, kicked off the event with an opening address that emphasised the range of technologies available from Exertis as well as the plethora of services that our customers are increasingly using to add value to their business. Fittingly, this was followed by our guest speaker, Christian Horner OBE, Team Principal at Red Bull Racing Formula One Team. Certainly, no stranger to Silverstone. Christian spoke about the complexities of running a Formula One motor sport team. It was a highly enlightening and entertaining talk highlighting the teamwork, technology and attention to detail that is required to be competitive.
The seminars were a popular choice for our visitors.

Smart Tech adoption is gathering pace. This is not only good news for retailers of all sizes and types but also for the electricians and professional installers that can help facilitate the connected home.
THE EXERTIS SMART HOME Exertis showcased the wide range of solutions that can be deployed in the home from products that add convenience to energy saving, entertainment and security. Voice assistants such as Alexa and Google Home are one of the key reasons for the upsurge in the market, making it easier for the homeowner to control anything from lights to security cameras. The Exertis Smart Home clearly demonstrated how Smart Tech products can be used throughout the house from the kitchen to the lounge, bathroom and bedroom as well as outside the property. As more smart home manufacturers have seized on the smart speaker opportunity, by default the speakers have become the hub that is controlling anything from lights to security cameras. Vendors featured: Arlo, Hive, Crux, D-link, Google, Ezviz, Candy, Hoover, Hue, JBL, Lenovo, Lightwave, Microsoft, Netatmo, Netgear, Samsung, Swann, TCP, Vestel, SoundXtra. It’s been an ideal day for us today.” Matthew Warner - Lenovo “Normally the customers are so used to seeing these products online, so to give them the ability to actually come, touch, feel, see how thin OLED is and see how slim the video wall bezel is, it’s great for us. We’ve had some new customers, some good leads and some possible projects to work on straight away which is always great for an event.” Chris Smith – LG Electronics
Paul Bryan, Exertis UK & I Managing Director "Once again this proved to be a great event for our customers with the opportunity to see the diverse range of technologies that we offer and hear about how our Exertis services can add great value to our resellers and retailers. I would like to thank our vendors for participating and our customers for spending the day with us.”
“It’s just been a continuous stream of interesting dialogue all day.” Adam Williams - Lightwave “It’s been a really good event from start to finish.” Dan Fletcher - OrbitSounds “Overall, there is no doubt that Plug In this year will be a key element in ensuring we continue to grow our brand presence and market share in the UK and Ireland.” Paul Hartridge – Speck

ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS’
WI-FI NETWORKS
SECURE?
According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, Wi-Fi has contributed approximately $2tn to the world’s economy1, with more than 13bn Wi-Fi devices in active use worldwide. Moreover, Wi-Fi is the primary medium for global Internet traffic, as more than 80% of traffic on the average smartphone is transferred via Wi-Fi. Whilst Wi-Fi 6 is expected to provide users with significant security enhancements, there is still a need for companies to be vigilant against cybercriminals and unintentional lapses on the part of employees. Indeed, with more organisations providing public access Wi-Fi, there is an increased obligation to protect users. Companies often go to great lengths to keep unauthorised people off their network, deploying the best encryption possible yet still being vulnerable. Access points and routers are a convenient way for criminals to find a way in and since employees increasingly connect to the network using their own mobile device, it’s not feasible for companies to switch off their Wi-Fi access. Keeping up with the latest products is highly recommended. Some Wi-Fi access points still run the older WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) standard of protection. Deploying Enterprise WPA2 with 802.1X authentication ensures that everyone can have their own Wi-Fi and password. This makes it much easier to manage when an employee leaves the company or loses a device as you can simply delete or change the user’s log-in. It’s also good practice for companies not to broadcast their SSID. Since employees should know the name of their wireless network, it makes sense to have this hidden, making it more difficult for unauthorised users to find it. Whilst it’s not fool proof, security is about providing multiple layers of protection and it’s a simple measure to adopt.
Nowadays, most companies provide a separate network for guests as the latest routers have the capability of running two Wi-Fi networks simultaneously. Keeping guests away from the company network is important for security reasons and also prevents the possibility of viruses or malware being introduced. In addition, enabling MAC authentication limits who can access the wireless network even further by only allowing certain devices to connect it, using a filtering process against pre-defined serial numbers. Limiting the signal range can also help - being able to connect to the network way outside of the premises provides opportunities for hackers. Network firewalls can stop or mitigate unauthorised access to private networks, providing a first line defence against attacks from outside. Most routers have built-in firewalls and can check or block suspicious activity. Increasingly, however, companies are looking at softwarebased Network Access Control (NAC) solutions that can significantly improve security through greater control of network usage. Balancing IoT and BYOD requirements against increasing productivity whilst preventing data loss and breaches is a security headache. By providing a platform which can easily monitor, manage and control user behaviour on the network, companies can minimise risks and reduce operational strains on the Wi-Fi infrastructure. Exertis has an experienced and dedicated wireless security team that help resellers ensure that their customers are making use of the best technology solutions and putting in place security measures that can protect their Wi-Fi networks. We can provide security and wireless audits, a full suite of professional services from our 24x7 TAC and a range of vendor solutions that can help you to deploy and maintain a secure Wi-Fi infrastructure. Ask your account manager for details.
It’s also important to ensure that the access points can’t be tampered with. Most APs have a reset button that can restore factory settings, removing the Wi-Fi security and allowing anyone to connect. Ensuring their physical security by placing them out of reach or activating any locking mechanisms to limit access to AP buttons or ports is recommended. So-called rogue access points are also a concern. These could be brought in by an employee wanting to get a better Wi-Fi signal or even by someone who has gained entry to the premises in order to hack the network. Without proper monitoring or scanning, it’s possible that this could go undetected. Some AP vendors offer wireless detection and intrusion systems that can sense suspicious activity and unauthorised APs.

FUTURE
BUSINESS
DAAS: WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT? As a service models are nothing new. Indeed, they are well established in some areas of IT, most notably in software. The concept isn’t entirely new for hardware either. Companies have long been using this type of method in the copier market, where leasing rather than investing in an expensive piece of equipment made more sense. Coupled with a maintenance and service contract, it quickly became the procurement choice for organisations. Device-as-a-Service (DaaS) is much the same, combining hardware leasing and end-to-end life cycle services into a monthly contract for a device. There is no doubt that DaaS is becoming a contributor to what seems to be everything as a service (XaaS) in today’s model of IT procurement. However, when technology moves at such speed and companies need to keep up with the latest products and solutions to be competitive, it’s hardly a surprise that it is gaining ever-increasing traction. DaaS has the advantage of combining the latest devices, be they mobile, PC or workstation, together with outsourcing a range of services that include asset management, managed services, refresh options and end of life disposal, into one bundled offering. Customers can either choose a maintenance contract or a fully managed service to monitor devices for security, compliance and potential hardware failures. For many companies, IT resource is at a premium and shifting the burden of lifecycle management to a DaaS provider can free up valuable time spent by IT in reporting, tracking and managing devices. The ability to predict and prevent hardware failures and ensuring that all devices are properly retired are major considerations. With DaaS, organisations can standardise hardware and software configurations and rapidly deploy new or replacement technology.
DaaS also provides extra security for companies in terms of preventing loss of data. By monitoring a company’s fleet of devices, it’s easier to adhere to security policies and ensure that updates and patches are regularly deployed. Asset disposal is also a challenge for many companies. Proper disposal of end of life products can also prevent data from falling into the hands of cybercriminals. A DaaS model not only ensures those devices are collected and wiped of sensitive data but that the business also recovers the residual hardware value. Deploying assets as and when required is also a key benefit derived from DaaS, something that traditional procurement can’t emulate. The ability to flex up and down depending on company performance, seasonal requirements and the like is an attraction. In a DaaS model, the provider can take back those devices and redeploy with another customer. IT budgets are always under pressure. Devices such as PCs, laptops and, increasingly, smartphones are critical components of a business infrastructure. However, according to a DellEMC report1, increasingly IT departments are having to focus on more strategic mobility and digital transformation projects or urgent security initiatives. Therefore, device refreshes have become a lower priority and due to their CAPEX intensive nature, renewals are increasingly likely to get pushed to the bottom of the IT priority list2. Likewise, purchasing a fleet of handsets clearly limits most companies. With DaaS, companies get more predictability with regard to costs. Paying a monthly subscription for the lifecycle of the product coupled with built-in services and support such as device configuration,

With our MTR acquisition, we have a wealth of experience in repair and refurbishment of mobile phones and tablets managing both trade-in programmes and service plans for Samsung. The company has built its reputation on providing a quality repair service and a reliable, 24/24 swap out facility. It uses original parts to refurbish devices, extending the lifecycle of phones and other mobile devices. In addition, it has the expertise to manage retirement of devices with certificated, military grade data security that ensures phones are wiped clean, particularly important with GDPR now in force or a process for environmentally-friendly disposal. Mobile phones, tablets and laptops have a residual value and our DaaS offering ensures that companies maximise their assets. Resellers can offer their customers the opportunity to take out a residual value lease which is a unique development for the industry, rather than repaying the cash price and the interest. The rental is for a fixed period of time but at a discount to the cash price because the device will be handed back at the end of the period. Much in the same way as many of us lease a car. This plan is available across all of our manufacturers and has significant benefits for the reseller, their customer and the customer’s employees. The lease agreement is made between the leasing company and the end customer. Provided that the credit check is satisfactory the reseller gets paid in full by the company immediately, improving their cash flow. In addition, the credit risk sits with the bank. The customer and reseller can also choose to add any of the managed services to the lease, providing a complete solutions bundle that can incorporate repair, refreshment and asset tagging as well as the devices. The Exertis DaaS portal provides the reseller with a unique ID and log-in where they can get a tailored view of existing contracts and previous quotes. Resellers can pick and choose devices from Exertis’ comprehensive portfolio, filter by price point, brand, storage or other features and once selected, they can add a range of services. Special requests can be handled via a bespoke button. The reseller can also get an estimate of the residual value of existing devices they might wish to trade in either for cash or as part of a future lease agreement. Both residual values and lease prices can be calculated on the system.
installation, data migration and the added benefit of the latest technology and updates, make perfect sense for any size of company. As a result, DaaS shifts procurement from a CAPEX to an OPEX model taking away the high cost of purchasing devices as a capital expenditure which depreciate. In turn, this can free up cash for organisations to invest in other initiatives. IDC reported that purchasing hardware consumes almost a quarter of corporate technology budgets2.
Companies moving to the Exertis DaaS model can avoid large capital investments, enjoy more predictable costs, reduce the burden of maintenance and management from their IT department, and increase security whilst providing their employees with the latest technology. For further information on DaaS, please contact your Exertis account manager.
Of course, employees want access to the latest technology. With millennials expected to make up 35% of the global workforce and with Gen Z accounting for 24%, that expectation has increased, based on their propensity for using technology, and it can make the difference between recruiting and retaining the best talent in the workplace. DaaS offers a great solution. On balance, DaaS seems to offer a win-win situation for organisations that want to significantly reduce their complexity and costs of device procurement and deployment. According to research from Market Research Future3, the global market is expected to expand at 54.7 % CAGR and to be worth $66,130m by 2023.
EXERTIS DAAS OFFERS UNIQUE LEASING OPPORTUNITY Exertis has always offered customers a great service when it comes to sourcing, supplying and deploying hardware devices. With our DaaS offering, we are adding in-life service and retirement to our services in an easily digestible format using a user-friendly portal.

WHAT’S NEW IN
ANDROID Q Any impending version of the Android operating system is bound to be open to rumour and speculation as to the new enhancements that can be expected. Reaching version 10 and operating on over 2.5bn devices, it’s certain to be of interest to users and developers alike. Now in its third phase (Beta 3) of iteration, it’s clear from Google that its focus is in three areas: innovation; security and privacy; and digital well-being. Indeed, in a recent blog the company said “As people carry their phones constantly and trust them with lots of personal information, we want to make sure they’re always in control of their data and how it’s shared. And as people spend more time on their devices, building tools to help them find balance with technology continues to be our priority.” With more people taking the opportunity to use Dual SIM phones for separating personal and business calls, the new features are good news for consumers and businesses alike.
SECURITY AND PRIVACY In Android Q, there are almost fifty new features and changes focused on security and privacy. Google has created a dedicated Privacy section under Settings, creating some new features for app permissions to enable users to gain a clearer understanding and more control over what apps have access to on a phone. Apps that ask
for a user’s location will now display a pop-up where it’s possible to agree to sharing location access all the time, only when the app is being used or not at all. Reminders will be sent when an app has the user’s location in the background in order to facilitate the decision to continue or not. Furthermore, Google notes that: “In Android Q, the OS gives users even more control over apps, controlling access to shared files. Users will be able to control apps’ access to the Photos and Videos or the Audio collections via new runtime permissions. For Downloads, apps must use the system file picker, which allows the user to decide which Download files the app can access.” The “Permissions usage” page in Settings has been completely overhauled to show which permissions are being used by how many apps, the ability to filter by permissions to see which apps are using certain ones, and a new UI for the “App info” page. Android Q will also provide protection for other sensitive data information such as serial numbers. In addition, Google has promised that with Android Q important OS components will be updated in the background, similar to the way apps are updated. This means users will get the latest security fixes and privacy updates faster without having to reboot the phone. Google maintains that Android has the most widely deployed security and anti-malware service of any operating system, scanning over 50bn apps every day.

IMPROVEMENTS TO DIGITAL WELLBEING With Android Q, Google is introducing new features to its Digital Wellbeing initiative. The company maintains that app timers have helped users stick to their goals 90% of the time and those using Wind Down, which enables the phone’s display to be dimmed and notifications to be stopped, had a 27% drop in nightly phone usage. A new feature called Focus mode enables the user to select apps that might be distracting like email or the news and silence them until the individual is ready to return to them. In addition, Google intends to include Family Link (parental control) in every device that has Digital Wellbeing on the new operating system. Top requested features like bonus time and the ability to set app-specific time limits will be included. Digital Wellbeing is becoming an increasing concern for companies as employees become distracted and burnt out through excessive use of their mobile phone. Employers are already taking steps to ensure workers are getting the balance right when it comes to using technology for work, especially with regard to how it affects their staff physically, psychologically and in terms of their overall wellbeing. In the workplace, there is a growing recognition that the unconstrained use of technology may be undermining performance and productivity. The prevalence of smartphones and email mean that employees are subject to a constant stream of notifications and interruptions, making it difficult to carry out complex or analytical tasks. The Android Q features a new dashboard with a detailed breakdown of the time spent on the device. It’s a fitness tracker but for phone usage. It provides the opportunity to strike the right balance of protecting employees’ health and wellbeing whilst maintaining productivity for the business.
INNOVATIONS Of course, there is plenty of innovation as well. New emerging trends such as foldables and 5G are being catered for in Android Q. App developers are being provided with tools to build faster connectivity in anticipation of 5G, enhancing experiences like gaming and augmented reality. New APIs will enable apps to determine user connection rate and latency, as well as detect if the connection is metered. The new operating system will also support the potential of foldable devices from multi-tasking to adapting to different screen dimensions.
DIGITAL WELLBEING According to Mary Meeker’s 2018 Internet Trends report1, the average adult spends 5.9 hours per day with digital media whether that’s on smartphone, tablet or laptop. Certainly, smartphone addiction has become a talking point. Google introduced its Digital Wellbeing app in an effort to help combat that and it is expected to feature on more Android phones in the future. Getting an understanding of a user’s smartphone habits creates self-awareness and hopefully better discipline. The Digital Wellbeing dashboard provides a daily view of how often a user checks the phone and how frequently different apps are used. Striking the balance between providing great technology and addiction is a worthy cause. Many experts recommend self-awareness and reflection as an essential step in creating a balance with technology. As well as providing a number of tools to give people greater insight into how they use their smartphones, it offers features such as flip to Shhh, Wind Down, and app timers designed to help reduce the time users spend on their phone. Google maintains that as machine learning and the Google Assistant continue to improve, people will start to reduce the amount of time they spend on screen.
Google is also enabling greater accessibility for content. Live Caption is designed to help deaf and hard of hearing people by improving access to digital media. By tapping the phone, Live Caption will, as the name suggests, automatically caption media that’s playing audio on the phone. Working with a variety of media such as videos, podcasts and audio messages, captions appear in real time as the speech is detected. The feature doesn’t require an internet connection – transcribing text locally from the device’s own speech recognition facility. In addition, Android Q aims to improve its verbal recognition to help people with speech impediments. Smart Reply is another example of how on-device machine learning is providing new features. Built into the notification system in Android, it intelligently predicts a response to a message coming from any messaging app. It can also predict an action – for example opening maps when the user receives an address. Google has also confirmed that Android Q will feature a system wide dark mode that can be activated at any time via a quick settings toggle or when the battery saver option is turned on. It is also introducing a new sharing menu intended to be much faster as well as doing a better job of recommending contacts and apps for sharing. Both features were highly requested. Android Q beta versions are available for use on a number of designated phones including the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, LG G8, Nokia 8.1 and Sony Xperia XZ3 - all available from Exertis. The final version is expected to launch in August.
