FIRST TENTATIVE STEPS

WHAT

do you say at the beginning of a year which has tip-toed in on the back of one which wreaked ravages unseen and unheard in the recent past? Barring occasional conflict in some hotspots, humanity has been blessed with relative peace and prosperity for at least the last seven decades since the end of the Second World War. But the past two years have been nothing less than a test, and a tough one at that, for the entire world. And with a new wave of Covid-19 threatening to engulf us as we enter into the year, once again, it is our behaviour that will determine the condition that we emerge in on the other side. Perseverance in observing safety measures is the need of the hour. Our celebrity interview this month is a person who has stood steadfast in the pursuance of his art. That Pandit Birju Maharaj is a stalwart in kathak is not disputed by anyone but it is the way that the dance exponent has adjusted and adapted to technology which continues to make him relevant as he pushes towards completing his ninth decade on the planet. On the travel front, we ventured northward and embraced the restorative properties of the mountains. The sojourn in Dharamshala and Palampur brought much respite and serenity in a life which is hurried and caught up in everyday pursuits. Another of our travellers allowed herself to rise above the din of the city — in a hot air balloon — which changed her perspective about the ancient holy destination of Benaras. On another note, one could take off on a road trip across California to take in the sun, sand, good food and spirits to usher in the year. Or even go for a sensorial experience that the islands of Seychelles offer. To take an unusual path, one could even enjoy the host of possibilities that the onset of winter offers in Czechoslovakia. Our guest writer points out that in times of a pandemic, the large hotels are being eased out in favour of more boutique properties that offer ample opportunities to enjoy ourselves while making sure that social distancing is maintained. What is a New Year if not a novel way of doing things? There are options galore to dress fashionably and also to set up the table for intimate gatherings which are now the need of the hour. All this and more in this issue of the Exotica. Hope that you and yours have a happy, prosperous, healthy and peaceful year. Nashledanou!

FAVOURITE HAUNTS OF STYLISH PEOPLE

I like anything with jasmine in it! And now, I'm a new oud fan. Earlier, I found it very overpowering. I like the woody smell in it.

I have to pick one, it'll be the old Hollywood musical Singing In The Rain as most of my life's works have been inspired by it. In Hindi, it's the very cliched Sholay.

I’ll pick Indian as we have 50 different varieties. My go-to food is Mutton biryani if I'm forced to eat only one dish every day of my life.

I think, a bag. And the crazier and quirkier it is, the better. I like out-of-the-box bags. I can pick up from the roadside to Zara to Le Mill and Khadi Bhandar.

Director, producer, actress, dancer and choreographer, FARAH KHAN has choreographed more than a hundred songs winning six Filmfare Awards and the National Film Award for Best Choreography

I was an avid reader till my kids were born.I like reading autobiographies or biographies of film people. Last week, I read two books, one on Vijay Anand and the other one on Anand Bakshi. Even if it's Hollywood, it's nice. But Bollywood is more relevant. I am not a fake intellectual. I like easy-breezy books. I am very cheap, But, I'd say Zara because I like comfortable clothes. I'm at an age when I can't be uncomfortable at all.

I have travelled to the weirdest locations to shoot songs and so, it depends. To shoot a song, Iceland was stunningly beautiful. But with kids, we love Maldives and Manhattan, New York. In the Maldives, there's nothing to do there but to live in the moment. And New York, because it's so energetic and there's always something to do.

SRILANKAN AIRLINES LAUNCHES FLIGHTS TO PARIS

SRI

Lankan Airlines, the national carrier of the Emerald Isle and a member of the Oneworld alliance unveiled flights to the French capital, Paris. The new service is operating scheduled flights between Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and France’s Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) from November 1. Accordingly, SriLankan commenced thriceweekly, non-stop flights to France every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday using a fleet of Airbus A330-300 aircraft configured for 269 economy and 28 business class seats. The flight time is around 11 hours and 25 minutes and Flight UL563 departs from Colombo at 00:35 hours and arrives in Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport at 07:30 hours. The return flight UL564 departs Paris on the same day at 14:30 hours and arrives in Colombo at 05:20 hours the next day. At the launch, SriLankan Airlines chairman, Ashok Pathirage said, “We are truly delighted to launch direct services between Colombo and Paris. The new route is indicative of our continuous commitment to enhance our network and the travel experience of passengers both in France and around the world. This new service will allow leisure and business travellers alike to travel to and from Paris non-stop and reach their destination in less time. At a time, the world

tourism trade is trying to revive, we see this as an opportunity to grow our presence and promote Sri Lanka as an ideal travel destination in a new travel landscape dotted by new guidelines for safe travel.” SriLankan Airlines ceased its operations to Paris in November 2016 but operated provisional passenger and cargo flights during the pandemic in July and September 2020. The carrier continues to rebuild its global network from the devastating effects of the ongoing pandemic. Passengers can also take advantage of connecting flight opportunities via Colombo and explore a wider range of prime leisure destinations in the Indian Ocean region offered by the Airline. "As more international destinations ease travel restrictions, SriLankan Airlines is revving up its services to provide more choice and convenience to passengers. Paris is a hub for the rest of Europe, and direct flights will boost tourist arrivals during the winter season," stated SriLankan Airlines' CEO Vipula Gunatilleka. SriLankan Airlines became the first carrier in the South Asian region to receive the 'Diamond' rating from the Airline Passengers Experience Association (APEX) and SimpliFlying, a standard received for the extra safety measures and comprehensive hygiene precautions adhered to since the onset of the global pandemic.

KHUSHBU KIRTI gets lost in the misty hill stations of Dharamshala and Palampur... only to find herself

THE

day that we — my sister and I — were supposed to leave for Dharamshala, the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh and home of Dalai Lama, was quite eventful. Not only did I have to attend an event, but our bus tickets got cancelled at the last moment. In short, we were in a mess. It was at this point that an employee of Radisson Blu Resort, Dharamshala, where we planned to stay for a few days, stepped in. And this, when I had completely given up hope as there were no tickets available. In hindsight, I believe, that the trip was predestined. We transformed when welcomed by the purest anchor of hope, Nature, the moment we crossed the barrier of the plains and embraced the atmosphere of the mountains. Absurd though this might sound, many of us can relate to it. The world seemed to help us resurrect from the lifeless beings that we had become, crammed with stress, as if liberating us.

EXOTICA [13] JANUARY 2022

DHARAMSHALA DIARIES

HAVE

you heard of the Three Day Effect? This happens when you break away from the centre of monotony and voluntarily explore the ambiguous, the less-occupied. Of course, excessive commercialisation of the hills means that there isn’t much left to discover from the lesser-known anymore. Coming back to the aforementioned effect — it is the three days’ period spent amidst nature — that makes an individual reset, recuperate and rejuvenate. By the third day — away from the chaotic life you had in the city around your corporate world, disentangled relationships and stressed mind — you have had the detox you needed. After that, it feels like a dream. You’re breathing pure air, enjoying the weather, exploring new places, talking to delightful strangers and making friends with them... you’re finally living. No longer do you feel the urge to search for the perfect Netflix show as an accompaniment to your meal since you don’t know how to eat otherwise. Here, nature’s treat spread out in front of you is more breathtaking than any thrill that a crime series offers. After being warmly welcomed by the chauffeur, Sonu, and front-desk executives, Priyanka and Sangam, we checked into our lavish deluxe suite on the first floor of the Eden building. The room led to a balcony from where you could see most of the resort and the restaurants adjoining the swimming pool. Pranav Raheja, the front office manager, explained that the buildings and suites are named after cricket stadiums — like Lords, Wanderers, Sydney Cricket

Ground and Eden — since one of the owners of Radisson is the current sports minister, Anurag Thakur, who wanted to capture the essence and keep alive the spirit of the sport. The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium at Dharamshala where several national matches and practises take place annually too embodies that spirit. The huge stadium, with seats in a variety of colours, is eye-catching. Cricket/sports lovers should explore the place in the evenings as the scorching day heat can play spoilsport. Raheja volunteered to take us on one of the hotel’s forest trails. Like many resorts, the infrastructure is such that the guests don’t feel the urge of stepping out of the premises, which is suited to the post-lockdown era. One can head out on the trails that lead to several picnic spots to enjoy food that has been personalised to taste in

the naturally beautiful background. One can rent bicycles to go around the property. We ventured out to the lush tea gardens, that Dharamshala is famous for, along with the war memorial. An eternal flame burns here with these words, ‘This symbolises the ever-burning flame of national freedom and how can man die better than facing fearful odds...’, with cannons and a specific area commemorating the fallen bravehearts. The names of soldiers martyred during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war are engraved on a beautiful black wall, amidst a pack of pine trees. We found another eternal flame at the Ganjarma Mahadevi that stood out among the many historical temples we visited. The Dalai Lama Temple (closed for visitors at the moment) was also one of the attractions while we explored the Tibetan market. Roaming in its vicinity, the

excellent craftsmanship of and unique food prepared by the locals grabbed eyeballs. Bone-tired after visiting these picturesque places, it was the perfect time to head to the spa supervised by an Ayurvedic doctor. The fully-functioning gym, banquet halls, a British-style bar called All Out (as the guy makes sure you’re ‘all out’ before you step out), exercised a pull over us and other guests, too. The proof was when the F&B executive, Bhaskar, informed us that all 120 hotel rooms were occupied. I’d like to mention the Naddi point, where clouds seem to pass through you as if you were a ghost. Of course, you’ll be slightly soaked, but how often could you say that you were racing with the clouds for company? What a great flex, no? It was, as if, we found our inner chi as we walked on the peaceful terrain of the Dhauladhar ranges. Living a luxurious life can also mean waking up to the clouds floating right outside your balcony. On the first day, we visited Radisson’s on-ground restaurant, called The Edge, as it is literally on the edge of the hill, connected to the portico and overlooking the swimming pool, with the majestic mountains serving as a backdrop. Chef Jitendra Nakhwa, at the Italian restaurant, told us how every dish was authentic. The raw material was, in fact, imported from Italy.

PALAMPUR PROMISES

AFTER

exploring most of Dharamshala, including areas in McLeod Ganj, we set out to traverse the paths of Palampur, the tea capital of North India. While the town was peaceful, graced with rich histories of war heroes, our hotel — Sarovar, Palampur — provided comfort and opulence. The one-BHK executive suite overlooked the restaurant and the view of the town, against the backdrop of mountains, was mesmerising. The peace and calmness set me in the mood to pen poetry. While the hotel was renowned for its revolving hotel, food scored high. Since I absolutely adored the Chef Ajay’s non-vegetarian platter, quite especially the Murgh malai tikka, he shared the secret behind its unique taste. The chicken was marinated twice, and then the cheese, along with the cashew paste, salt and coriander leaves were added. The staff’s diversity was reflected in the food as the meals were authentic. While staying in Palampur, we decided to pay homage to Captain Vikram Batra and Captain Saurabh Kalia, the heroes from this land. The Saurabh Vann Vihar, an ecological park, was one of the major tourist attractions of the place. Besides the rich history that it carries, honouring Shaheed Captain Kalia, the nature park was scenic and tranquil on the banks of the Neugel Khad. We found that it was home to a variety of flora and fauna which elevated the beauty of the park. The

bridge in tricolour heightened the patriotic fervour in every visitor. On the other hand, The Shaheed Captain Vikram Batra Government College also contained the bust of the late soldier, which is engraved with the words, Ye dil mangey mor, a slogan immortalised by the captain and his colleagues. The next day, we headed to Bir Billing for paragliding but luck wasn’t on our side and it rained. Despite that, the indelible journey amidst lush green mountains left us mesmerised and we didn’t need anything more. Sitting at Billing’s most famous spot — the world’s second-highest paragliding take-off point at 8,000 ft — was unforgettable. Coming back to the revolving restaurant at Sarovar, Cloud7, which takes about 45-minutes to go round once. The whole circumambulation showcased Palampur from its glass walls. The officiating in-charge, Hem Raj, and the front office executive, Anjali Kapoor, indulged our whims. While the environment predisposed us to feel at peace, the hotel staff only elevated our mood with the excellent services. I will cherish the time at both the hill stations.

GLIDING OVER THE GANGES

While travellers have been negotiating the narrow lanes of Varanasi in search of moksha, NIVI SHRIVASTAVA does it in style and explores the city, from the top, in a hot air balloon

FOR

most regular Joes, flying is a mundane activity given that there’s not much we can do in a cramped aircraft anyway. To make it more fun, one could float a little above the earth’s surface tucked in a wicker basket which is tied to a giant balloon above your head. Sounds like bliss, doesn’t it? On a hot air balloon flight, (yes, every trip is called a flight as there is a proper ticket to board the lightest aircraft known to humankind) one experiences the real joy of flying with a dash of adventure as no one can predict where the balloon will land. Aloft a hot air balloon flight, you float across colourful landscapes and wave at random ant-sized humans whom you can barely see. This, actually, is a bird’s-eye view in the literal sense. Recently, in the holy city of Varanasi, E-factor Entertainment, which specialises in curating heritage festivals to attract upper crust travel and adventure enthusiasts from all across the world organised a hot air ballooning festival. At first appearance, the ancient city of Kashi aka Varanasi aka Benaras, India’s most popular holy destination, might appear to be an unusual choice for air-borne adventure activities. But the views of the

Ganga riverfront and the ancient structures bordering it ensure a spectacular sight-seeing aerial trip. Whether you’ve been to Varanasi once or several times, the sights, smells and stimulating sounds of the city always overwhelm your senses. The visual panorama of the city — famous for temples, serpentine streets and gastronomical delights — is tough to miss and impossible to ignore. Its old-world charm and the famous Ganga ghats have fascinated travellers for ages. The historic constructions and monuments dot every turn of the streets as you stroll through the chaotic yet lively city which is home to a variety of human activities in every nook and corner. But these visual delights unfold when you walk around. Gliding around 800 feet above the ground, on a misty morning, we witnessed the bright tangerine sunrise and radiant rays shimmering on

the calm Ganga surface. Everything seemed to turn into liquid gold and the shades of the sleepy city transformed magically. The city of Varanasi is a living paradox, where the spiritually energised Kashi entwines seamlessly with a sluggish yet regal Benaras in the twisted bylanes. The visual appearance is evident in the ancient architectural landmarks sprinkled across the city, and we could easily spot the structural demarcation as we floated above. The signature ghats like the Dashashwamedh Ghat close to Vishwanath Temple, where a grandiose Ganga aarti makes for a spectacular sight every morning and evening floated into view. A little ahead hazy spec engulfed in smoke marked out the famous Manikarnika Ghat, which functions as a crematorium at all hours of the day. Another monument Gyanvapi Mosque with its two octagonal minarets floated into view standing northwest of the Well of Knowledge or ‘Gyan Vapi Kund’. Moving ahead, we could spot multi-coloured homes with geometrically defined terrace areas, stacked together like a lively lego installation. The balloon’s landing, with three women passengers and a non-Hindi speaking pilot, was an extraordinary affair. Since this was my second hot air balloon flight, I was mentally prepared to alight in a choc-a-bloc Banaras ki gali or on someone’s terrace but our pilot deftly managed to stop in an expansive slum ground. A curious mob of local dwellers gathered as soon as we touched down. This certainly is a part and

Culture and Tourism, mentioned, “This new offering will add another experience for the explorers and make Varanasi a top spot to be experienced for many premia and high-value travellers from across the world.” Post-Covid, these activities are designed to build authentic experiences around sustainable tourism. Whereas, Samit Garg, founder of E-factor, believes, “The new age travellers are seeking a new brand of tourism that is not a singular product but translates into a series of unfamiliar novel yet transformative ‘experiences.’ The rise in exploratory and experiential travel over the standard approach to leisure is the new trend.”

THINGS TO REMEMBER parcel of an unseen adventure that you’re bound to experience when you board a balloon flight. Post sunset, the city ghats glowed with the exuberance of the Ganga aarti and an ultra-hightech laser show across the 80 ghats to commemorate the occasion. The Varanasi Hot Air Balloon Festival with UP Tourism was a one-of-akind initiative for many reasons, and the interesting bit was to capture the beauty of the holy city during the festival of Dev Deepavali (a festive occasion when the entire city dazzles with lights and zest of Gods celebrating Diwali). To add an element of novelty during the celebrations, Mukesh Kumar Meshram, principal secretary at

IF

you ever plan to take a hot air balloon flight, remember to wear comfortable non-flowing outfits and not to carry anything that you could drop. Most pilots are trained in the art of creating their flying machines and they prefer to carry their own balloons wherever they go. The pilot first lays down the entire balloon bag (or envelope) on a flat surface and attaches it to a suspended wicker basket, which carries passengers and the pilot. The preferred time for a flight is early morning before sunrise to avoid direct light and heat once the sun is up. The source of hot air is usually a cylinder that burns liquid propane to create an open flame that keeps the balloon floating in the air.

Q&A

Legacy across generations

Kathak exponent PANDIT BIRJU MAHARAJ has tapped into technology to teach the nuances, elements and evolution of the dance tradition, says SAIMI SATTAR

THE

dance form of kathak and the person of Pandit Birju Maharaj are synonymous with each other. An exponent of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin gharana of kathak in India, he is a descendant of the Maharaj family of dancers, which includes his two uncles, Shambhu and Lachhu Maharaj as well as his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj. He is also is a vocalist in Hindustani classical music. After working along with his uncle, Shambhu Maharaj at Bhartiya Kala Kendra, later the Kathak

Kendra, he opened his own dance school, Kalashram in Delhi. Recently, three generations — Pandit Birju Maharaj, Jain Kishan Maharaj (son), Deepak Maharaj (son), Mamta Maharaj (daughter) and Rajini Maharaj (granddaughter) — came together to perform kathak along with tabla and harmonium on a live YouTube interactive programme across India. Students from across the country joined to be a part of this programme.

How have performing arts changed during the pandemic? Performing arts are one of the biggest sectors to be hit by Covid 19. Concerts of dance and music are dependent on gatherings of people in public places. With lockdowns in place and a restriction on the number of people gathering at venues, this segment has faced a major setback. Artistes have suffered a lot during the pandemic as their livelihoods have been impacted by the complete suspension of concerts. The guru-shishya tradition and the devotion to art... Is that tough to find in today’s time? Yes, it is tough. In our time, guru-shishya parampara was the only way to learn art forms. Sadhna, single-minded and focussed devotion to the art form, and the guru were the hallmarks of this tradition. Today, things are more modernised and people do not have the time to do seveneight hours of riyaaz. Earning a livelihood, through art, is a bigger focus than learning the art form itself. That changes everything, including the kind of time artistes devote to learning and spending time with the guru. You’ve been performing for decades and teaching since 13... What are the changes that you’ve witnessed? Besides what I have mentioned above, everything is now instant. As a result, artistes also look at instant gratification

and success. We waited years to get our due and to reach our goals. Today there is also more pressure due to social media and the need to stay relevant in a cluttered scenario. You’ve been a part of two films Shatranj ke Khiladi and, more recently, Devdas... Would you say popular culture can increase the outreach of classical arts? Yes! Definitely. Bollywood is the biggest canvas in India and performing arts —such as classical dance forms and music and folk forms — tend to reach a much wider audience if showcased in movies. Your message for people who want to pursue classical arts and do not have a background in it? It is a long journey and one that requires steadfast devotion, respect and passion. It is not for the faint-hearted or those who are in a hurry to become stars. But once you are into a classical art form, be it dance or music, you will be hooked forever. It is the most relaxing thing in life and can be extremely satisfying to pursue just an art irrespective of success or failure. How are your three generations coming together to guide new generations in cultural dance? Our gharana has always been involved in passing on the tradition and the taleem (education) we learnt from our predecessors. That is the beauty of art. It spreads and becomes bigger and immortal through sharing. Even our younger generations have disciples to whom they pass on their knowledge and art to. My children, nephew and grandchildren are all dedicated to passing on the art form to future generations. How has Routes2Roots brought your three generations together to guide students across India? The organisation has been doing great work in introducing the children of India to Indian classical art forms, be it dance, music, theatre, yoga... I was delighted when they came up with the idea of presenting three generations of our gharana to students to educate them on the

MY CHILDREN, NEPHEW AND GRANDCHILDREN ARE ALL DEDICATED TO PASSING ON THE ART FORM TO FUTURE GENERATIONS nuances and elements of our tradition and how it has evolved with generations. Deepak, Ragini and I had a wonderful experience conducting this special masterclass online. Although I had my apprehensions about online teaching five years ago when they were starting Virsa, I overcame those when I saw how effective their software has been in conducting two-way classes. It almost makes you forget you are in a virtual class, with children responding to you in real-time and following your instructions. And one cannot deny the massive numbers that can be reached simultaneously through the online platform. It’s a great initiative and I am thankful to them for inviting me.

Let this ultimate Southern California road trip itinerary be your guide.

Days 1-3

SANTA MONICA DAY 1: Santa Monica, the starting point, is Los Angeles’ beach city. It is a charming seaside town with all of the culture, events and urban amenities of a bustling metropolis. Kick off your trip with a bike ride along the 35-km beach bicycle trail or a guided tour with Santa Monica Bike Centre. Then spend a few hours at the Pacific Park amusement park, located on the world-famous Santa Monica Pier and catch the sunset from the Ferris wheel. End the day with dinner on the patio at one of Main Street’s neighbourhood restaurants.

DAY 2: Begin your day by grabbing some fresh fruit from the Santa Monica Farmers Market, then getting a coffee-to-go and strolling toward the 26-acre Palisades Park, known for its beautiful ocean views. Want to get your feet wet? Catch a wave during a surf session with the pros at Aqua Surf School before exploring the Annenberg Community Beach House, a unique destination with spectacular views, a splash pad, a playground, a gallery, beach courts, cultural events and more. Head to Santa Monica Place for outdoor luxury shopping and dining. DAY 3: Greet the dawn with a sunrise hike in historic Will Rogers State Park through Malibu Discovery Tours, then grab your sunscreen and shades before finding a sunny spot in the sand. Perry’s Café and Beach Rentals is a must, offering ‘Beach Butler’ service with a private beach area, as well as chairs, an umbrella, towels, and food and beverages delivered right to you. Find your artsy side at Bergamot Station, Southern California’s largest art gallery complex and cultural centre with over 20 contemporary galleries, or head to Pico Blvd for a self-guide street art mural tour.

Days 4-7

GREATER PALM SPRINGS DAY 4: It’s time to head to Greater Palm Springs for a little relaxation and rejuvenation. This storied resort oasis, home to nine distinct cities, serves as the gateway to Joshua Tree National Park and boasts hundreds of miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails as well as an incomparable collection of luxury hotels, resorts and spas. After the 2.5-hour drive, climb aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the world’s largest rotating tramcar, and ascend over 9,000 feet to the top of Mount San Jacinto. Need to stretch your legs? Set out on a desert hike or go rock climbing among colossal boulders at Joshua Tree National Park. Be sure to visit Pioneertown, an Old West movie set, or stop by the world-renowned saloon and restaurant, Pappy & Harriet’s, for a barbecue dinner and live music. As the sun dips behind the mountains, embark on a San Andreas Fault Sunset and Stargazing Jeep Tour with Desert Adventures Red Jeep Tours & Events. DAY 6: Begin the day with another shot of adrenaline at the BMW Performance Centre. Strap into a high-performance BMW and learn to negotiate one of three private road tracks under your instructor’s watchful eye. Days 7-9

SAN DIEGO DAY 7: After spending a couple of days immersed in the desert’s awe-inspiring scenery and healing energy, pack up the car to explore the world-famous attractions and neighbourhoods of San Diego. The region’s unique Cali-Baja culinary scene and craft brew industry have foodies flocking for fresh experiences, while a dynamic downtown is a home to nightlife that’s as vibrant as the city itself. An added advantage — it’s only 2.5 hours away. Spend the late morning exploring the Embarcadero, an epicentre of maritime history, where you can tour the USS Midway Museum, take a one- or two-hour harbour cruise or visit the floating Maritime Museum. Later, watch the sunset while sipping cocktails at one of Harbour Island’s trendy bay-side restaurants, then indulge in the cuisine prepared by top chefs in Little Italy, San Diego’s current restaurant ‘hot spot’. DAY 8: Wake up and walk on the wild side at the world-famous San Diego Zoo, home to more than 4,000 animals. Stroll through the country’s largest urban park — Balboa — featuring 15 museums, an

artist colony and fascinating architecture. Then top it all off with dinner and dancing in the Gaslamp Quarter, a historic downtown neighbourhood, with 200+ restaurants, bars and nightclubs within a 14-block radius. DAY 9: Make your last morning memorable by enjoying breakfast at a cosy La Jolla cliffside restaurant (be sure to check out the sea lion colony) followed by some much-needed beach time. Kick back and catch some rays along San Diego’s 70 miles of coastline. Round out the day in Old Town, the ‘Birthplace of California’, where museums, restaurants and Mexican traditions combine to provide an unforgettable cultural experience.

Day 10

START DREAMING ABOUT YOUR RETURN VISIT Enjoy a light bite at one of San Diego’s hidden gem neighbourhoods of North Park, South Park or Hillcrest, then head to the airport (located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego) for your trip back home-and start dreaming about your next SoCal getaway.

THE ISLAND

With its pristine beaches and azure sea, Seychelles is an ideal getaway for couples

NOT

only is Seychelles known for its azure crystal waters, beaches, or tranquil way of life, but the island is one of the world's top destinations for a romantic getaway. From indulging in decadent local cuisine to unwinding in a well-earned spa retreat, here is a list of top romantic activities to do as a couple in the Seychelles.

UNDERWATER EXPERIENCE: An underwater adventure in the deep blue sea around the island can bring you face to face with numerous, colourful marine life. Venturing deeper into the Seychelles’ waters can open your eyes to a breath-taking ecosystem. Glass bottom boats and semi-submarines are other options to gaze at the incomparable variety of fishes and corals in a relaxed setting.

EXOTICA [34] JANUARY 2022

LOCAL CUISINE: The place is a melting pot, where Indian, Chinese and African origin cuisines come together. This means that the nation’s flavour palette is packed with tantalising spices, vibrant colours and fragrant aromas. Restaurants line the island’s coasts, combining gourmet Creole food and a picturesque view. High up on the flavour are Creole delicacies — the mouthwatering Banana la daube, to satiate your sweet tooth, and Smoky grilled fish.

BEACH PICNIC: What's more romantic than having an intimate picnic on an awardwinning beach with your loved one? All that is required are the basics: towels, snacks, and the beach. Every inch of the island shore has a spectacular view so you never have to worry about a shortage of picnic spots. Up the ante by renting a luxury picnic, personalised solely for you and your significant other. Idyllic for honeymooners, a luxury picnic takes away all responsibilities off your hands and lets you immerse in the experience.

The windy season is perfect for enthusiasts looking to kitesurf whilst overlooking a scenic backdrop. Horse riding is available to add a fairy tale ambience.

SPA AND RETREAT DAY: Add a pinch of relaxation to your stay with a muchneeded day at the spa. A holistic holiday is just what the doctor ordered, and plenty of packages offer a deluxe pampering session to allow couples to unwind. Most hotels offer couples’ massages ranging from rejuvenating facials to a full body massage infused with local herbs and fruits. The flora and fauna make Seychelles’ restorative qualities even more intense.

Nothing is more romantic than blissfully taking a light stroll on the beach. Stargazing is also on the table for couples looking to cuddle over a clear, diamondspeckled sky.

TRAVEL BUG As the Czech Republic gets wrapped in a blanket of snow, you can feel the real magic in the air and it seems as if you have entered into a fairy tale

WINTER WONDERLAND

THE

Czech mountains are an ideal place for winter holidays, whether on a snowboard or cross-country/downhill skis. A few years from now, you will still smile when looking at your photographs of paragliding, tobogganing or skating on the longest track in the world. While Prague and its attractions remain popular among Indian travellers, an increased interest has been recorded in heritage cities of Olomouc, Litomysl, Kutna Hora, and Kromeriz, which have an old-world charm and are protected by UNESCO. One can explore the cities of Karlovy Vary and Liberec that offer ideal experiences for families and couples while Brno, Ostrava and Prague are the cities that never sleep. If you’re wondering what you can do during the best time of the year in the Czech Republic, here’s a list of a few things, that once read, will be on your travel Czechlist:

WINTER ACTIVITIES: You can never run out of things to do in the Czech Republic during the winters. Right from sledge runs to snow parks to skiing the country has it all. You will discover something new here every year, ranging from stylish hotels, restaurants and cafes on the slopes to ski mountaineering trails. If you prefer sledging, you will certainly enjoy yourself on the Zvonková cesta from Cerná hora to Janské Lázne.

EXOTICA [37] JANUARY 2022

ICE SKATING: It is one of the most unforgettable experiences in the Centre of Prague and Brno or even on the Vltava River in Prague when it freezes during the winter season. Irrespective of whether you are a professional ice-skater or an amateur who has never tried this activity before, ice skating should be experienced by one and all. For ice-skating in a fairytale setting, try out the rink on the Fruit Market (Ovocný trh) in the Prague Old Town. When it comes to Brno, skip the ice rings and head to the Water Reservoir where you can skate for several kilometres at a time.

INDULGE IN TRADITIONAL DELICACIES: You can indulge your taste buds with a lot of good food and sweet treats. Try the many different cookies. The most popular and frequentlybaked ones are vanilla crescents and Linz cookies. The Czechs also bake bear paws, called so after the shape of the mould in which they are baked.

TRAVEL BUG

FAR FROM THE

CROWD THE

pandemic has affected and changed nearly every aspect of the world as we knew it. The hospitality and tourism industry is no different. There has been a significant shift in the minds of travellers and what they are looking for in their trips and hotels. Travel will always be an integral part of society and a way for people to explore and relax. However, health and safety now play a much more important role in travel planning than they have ever before.

While people are still keen to travel, they want to do it safely and securely by staying at properties that share this outlook. Overpacked hotels located in the heart of the city right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of a city are no longer sought after. There is now an inclination to select properties that are away from the crowds, surrounded by open grounds with ample space, serenity and scenery. People have had enough of being confined for

EXOTICA [40] JANUARY 2022

AKHIL ANAND believes that boutique properties are the way forward in the post-pandemic world

months on end and having to do everything from home. Staycations have taken the world by storm, and more individuals than ever are looking for a relaxing and scenic getaway. The ideal retreat, right now and in the near future, is a location with spectacular views of nature, cosy accommodations, helpful personnel, as well as some in-house activities. These setups not only allow guests the space to be in solitude but also provide spaces where they can choose to interact with other guests and staff — only if they so desire. Hospitality and tourism companies need to recognise the consumer's perspective and equip their resorts with everything necessary to ensure the safety, comfort and tranquillity of their visitors. They could also make each location more authentic and local than have generic modern aesthetics. Properties around India could be designed to capture the essence of the location and blend in effortlessly. There should be adherence to the strictest safety and sanitary standards, and adequate space and opportunities for guests to immerse themselves in nature and isolation should be a given. The pandemic also started an unforeseen string of travel restrictions that still come and go as we speak. It is these domestic boutique properties that provide an escape even in times of limited options, and since the flight costs get eliminated, these staycations are affordable and budget-friendly options. Travellers get to scratch their exploration itch without breaking the bank and compromising on their health and safety. As the cities get clogged with pollution, traffic and seasonal viruses, a serene property located away from the city serves as the perfect getaway. Heightened levels of air pollution not only have harmful short-term effects but also have serious long-term implications such as heart, disease, lung cancer, respiratory diseases, damage to organs and more. Planning a retreat to a place far away from a city — at a time like this — gives your mind, body and soul the chance to replenish and rejuvenate themselves while providing a safe escape from the shackles of city life. Packed hotels in high rise buildings were all the rage at one point but that is simply not the case anymore. Travellers want to spend more time in their hotels and resorts intending to relax and catch a break

EXOTICA [42] JANUARY 2022

from the wear and tear of daily life. Such an experience is best available at boutique properties in the trenches of nature. Staycations at domestic boutique properties also mean that travel time is cut down significantly. There is no waiting time or flight time and, in turn, no flight fatigue and jet lag as well. The feeling of being relaxed begins the moment you embark on the journey... peace and serenity follow. Boutique properties eliminate the stress associated with packed itineraries and all other kinds of unnecessary baggage that comes with trips. Boutique properties have a better chance at getting to know and serving their customers on a more personal and customised level than big-city chain properties. These can make guests feel welcome and help them get to know the staff and

property, for all that it stands for, while developing strong long-lasting relationships with the chain. Guests can be best catered to when their needs and desires are known and understood and boutique properties have a great opportunity to do that. While we are all trying to regain some sort of normalcy, society as a whole has been compelled to accept a new normal since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. Consumers are now resuming tours and travels but safety and serenity are among the top few priorities. Boutique properties providing an intimate setting and experience are the dream destinations right now and will also be highly sought after in future. — The author is the director, Tree of Life Resorts and Hotels

GURUSPEAK Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Spiritual Guru

THE BEST MEDICINE When things are going well, everybody can laugh but when everything falls apart and you can still laugh, that is evolution and growth

IF

you ever happen to meet God, do you know what you would tell him? “Oh, I have met you inside.” God will dance in your life when your day dawns in laughter and love. The true prayer is laughing in the morning. Don’t just create a facade of laughing but do so from deep inside. The laughter comes from the centre of our Being, from the core of our heart. True laughter is true prayer. When you laugh, entire nature laughs with you. It echoes and resounds and that is really the worth of

life. When things are going well, everybody can laugh but when everything falls apart and you can still laugh, that is evolution and growth. So there is nothing in life that is more worthy than your laughter. Never lose it for anything, whatsoever. Events come and go. Some are a little pleasant, others unpleasant, but whatever happens, they leave you untouched. There is an area deep in you that is left untouched. Hold on to that something untouched. Then you will be able to keep laughing.

EXOTICA [56] JANUARY 2022

There are differences even in laughter. Sometimes you laugh just to avoid thinking or to avoid looking at yourself. But when you see and feel within yourself, that life is intensely present every moment, then nothing can bother you or touch you. Then laughter is very authentic. It is real laughter. You might have observed that when young babies laugh, their whole body is jumping and bouncing. The laughter is not just coming out of their mouths. Every cell in the body is laughing. That is enlightenment. That laughter is innocent, pure, without inhibitions and any strain. Laughter opens us up, opens the heart. And anytime we don’t feel up to that innocence, what do we do? You question, “I don’t feel that innocent or free. What do I do?” You can attend to several layers of your existence. First, the body — see if you have had good rest, proper food and some exercise. Then attend to your breath. It has its rhythm. Every mood of the mind has a definite rhythm in the breath. By attending to the rhythm in the breath, the mind and body can be elevated. Then look at the concepts and opinions that hover in the mind. Good, bad, right, wrong, should do, shouldn’t do, all these could bind you. Every thought is associated with some sensation and feeling. Observe the sensation and feeling in the body. Observe the

rhythm in the emotions — if you observe, you never make new mistakes. You have the same pattern of emotions but you hang it on different causes, different things, people, circumstances, situations. Attend to this rhythm of the emotions. Observing thoughts as thoughts and emotions as emotions opens us to our true Self, the godliness within us. The very observation changes it. When you observe, all that is negative falls away. And the nature of positive emotions is such that they grow. If you observe when you are angry, the anger will fall away. And if you observe if there is love, love grows. That is the best and only way. Observe that thoughts come and they pass. A negative thought comes because of stress. If you are put under great stress, on that day, or the next day, you will get negative thoughts and become frustrated. Instead of trying to do something with those thoughts that have arisen, which is of no use, attend to the source from which they bubble up. If the source is clean, positive thoughts come. And if negative thoughts come, you observe, so what? They come and they vanish in no time. We need to be able to see things as they are, objectively or subjectively. That is the essence of life when it blooms from within and allows true laughter in life.

ANGER

STOP THAT TRIGGER

If anger causes distress or affects your health and well-being often, it is imperative to counter it. If you want to change how you deal with it, the best long-term solution lies with yoga

is a natural response when we feel threatened or provoked. It can happen occasionally or frequently and can range from mild irritation to full-blown to destructive rage. Everyone has their unique triggers — provocation, tiredness, grief, depression, pain, stress, injustice, feeling devalued or unappreciated. The underlying cause is generally a feeling of losing

control. When we get angry, the brain perceives the situation as a threat and triggers a flight or fight response. This causes the body to release stress hormones — adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol that affect our physiology, cognition and behaviour. Our muscles tighten. Our heart rate and blood pressure go up. Our breath becomes shorter while our face and hands get flushed. If anger causes distress or affects your health

EXOTICA [58] JANUARY 2022

and well-being often, it is imperative to counter it. Research suggests that suppressed and pent up anger can harm your health. It can cause mental and emotional disturbances such as depression, low self-esteem and more. Alternatively, if you’re prone to intense angry outbursts, there’s constant chaos in the body resulting in headaches, digestion problems, backaches and more. Research shows that anger and hostility are linked with heart disease, high blood pressure, peptic ulcers and stroke. Anger can distress others and negatively affect personal and work relationships. You may not be able to change situations or people that trigger anger but you can change your reactions. Some techniques will help in day-to-day situations like counting from one to 10 before responding, deep breathing and the like. These are, however, temporary fixes. If you want to change how you deal with anger, the best long-term solution lies with yoga. The various practises of yoga work with both the body, mind and emotions. It places great importance on the breath which impacts our nervous system. Every asana (posture), stretch,

movement is synchronised with the breath and affects the endocrinal (hormonal) system. This helps the body release good hormones, relaxes it and turns the mind inward. Forward bending postures like Paschimottasana, Yoga Mudra and relaxation postures (Sarnagat Mudra, Yoga Nidra) are especially beneficial in managing anger. Pranayama (breathing practises) is important as the breath and emotions are closely linked. You can observe this for yourself. When angry, you breathe rapidly and when sad, you breathe heavily. Sheetali, Sheetkari and Brahmari are effective for cooling and soothing the mind. Others like Kapalbhatti, help to expel and release toxins. Pranayama controls breathing by inhaling (poorak), holding the breath (kumbhak) and exhaling (rechak) to a specific count. With regular practise, we breathe slower and deeper and hold longer. Gaining mastery over your breath can change the body’s chemistry. It can bring a feeling of deep peace, inner vitality and a sense of well-being. Our awareness level is higher and we can see, pause, act and react to triggers differently and express our anger in more constructive ways.

COUNT YOUR FATE

NUMBER 1 (Those born on the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th of any month) A great month which will turn sluggish in the second-half. You might face a little strain but, overall, a decent month. Patience is an important virtue. You’ll take time to get what you desire. Focus on your goals. Your enthusiasm and hard work shall turn the tide of fortune in your direction. Inactivity is fatal.

NUMBER 4 (Those born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd and 31st of any month) An eventful month where fortunes swing either way. A strong possibility of problems cropping up in personal relations if you don’t think before you speak. If not laid-back in your approach, you could win accolades. Work on your presentation skills. Take care of the urinary tract and legs.

NUMBER 7 (Those born on the 7th, 16th and 25th of any month) Frequent mood swings could increase if you aren’t patient. If work is not favourable, loved ones will support you, so show gratitude. Though financially, you think you are in trouble but it could be your insecurity. Travel could materialise. All the past work would help you live on laurels until your time comes.

NUMBER 2 (Those born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th and 29th of any month) You could face hurdles in achieving your targets. Things may not come or do too slow. Try not to get ruffled or agonise over it. Be careful before making a huge financial and emotional investment. Anything important shall be pushed to next month. If you labour, chances are, you would be victorious.

NUMBER 5 (Those born on the 5th, 14th and 23rd of any month) A great month to kick-start a lucky year especially in financial matters. Travel is indicated. However, this could also be a stressful month if you let yourself worry unnecessarily. Stress can cause stomach ailments but you will bounce back. Relationships can get healthier too, along with your optimism.

NUMBER 8 (Those born on the 8th, 17th and 26th of any month) As you sow, so shall you reap. So, sweat, strive and strike. Your key to life should be the three Ps — practicality, patience and perseverance.

NUMBER 3 (Those born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st and 30th of any month) Gear up for being tested and examined. Think long-term. Success arrives rather late. Hard work coupled with good luck eventually pays. Financially, it appears to be a better month. Kick-start an enterprise. Trust your intuitions in finances as well as relations. It is an year of significant fortune.

NUMBER 6 (Those born on the 6th, 15th and 24th of any month) It’s an year and month to look forward to. Those searching for a property can be rewarded. Don’t take huge loans. Don’t listen to your heart alone or you could be cheated, emotionally and financially. A good year for students to better qualifications. Those waiting for marriage may need to bide some more time.

NUMBER 9 (Those born on the 9th, 18th and 27th of any month) Brace against a rocky path. But the year belongs to you. Only a lack of effort can stop you. Try not to let your ego come in the way.
