1. RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL Right now there is a real focus on going green in every aspect of life, including travel. Tourists are beginning to realize that truly meaningful travel means accepting a responsibility of stewardship for the beautiful places that they are visiting.

Indeed, Sustainable Travel International and Mandala Research have reported that 60% of leisure travellers from the US have been on a “sustainable� vacation sometime in the past three years.

2. REMOTE LUXURY While it is wonderful to live in an interconnected world thanks to the web and mobile devices, more travellers than ever are looking to “switch off” and make a true escape. So another growing trend is for remote travel.

3. LONG AND WELL-PLANNED TRIPS Traditionally, most people have planned trips that last a week or less—two weeks at the most. But it is hard to really let go of day-to-day life and fully immerse oneself in a new experience with such a short duration.

WATER FESTIVALS CELEBRATING NEW YEAR IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: Will you be there?

Travelling in Southeast Asia in April or November? Then get ready for a splash of ritual, celebration, and fun at one or more of the region’s famous water festivals. These lively festivals are so named because during them, revelers sprinkle, pour, or splash water on one another. Water is seen as purifying, so this act is one of well-wishing and kindness. It can also be wonderfully refreshing on a hot day!

There are quite a few different water festivals throughout Southeast Asia, each with their own distinctive character. Here are a few that travellers should think about adding to their itineraries this year.

2. THINGYAN, MYANMAR The Burmese New Year’s festival Thingyan takes place in mid-April, spanning four or five days. As with Bon Om Touk, participants throw water on each other while taking part in other rituals to welcome in the new year.

Buddhists in Myanmar fast for part of the day on Thingyan Eve. It isn’t until nightfall that the party gets going. Throughout the country, bamboo pavilions are erected and decorated with papier mache. Then it is time for music, dance performances, and illuminated floats. The next day, the water throwing begins. Those standing on the stages pour water down liberally on passersby below. Everyone except monks and elderly folk are fair game—so be ready to get soaked!

3. SONGKRAN, LAOS Also in April is the famous water festival of Songkran, which is celebrated in both Laos and Thailand. In Laos, the festival takes place between April 13-15 or April 14-16, depending on the year (it is always three days). It is the most popular holiday in Laos.

Songkran in Laos has its own unique traditions. As with the other water festivals throughout Southeast Asia, travellers can expect to get wet—but they may also notice a beautiful aroma wafting through the air. Often water is infused with flowers or natural perfumes in order to give it a lovely scent before it is poured or thrown at passersby.

During Songkran in Laos, stupas (mounds) are also made out of sand. Sometimes these tributes are made right on the beach, while other times sand is brought in to temples for the purpose. Once decorated with flowers and flags, they are splashed lightly with scented water before being presented to the monks.

As with Thingyan and Bon Om Touk, music, dance, and other forms of merriment also play a role in Songkran, especially at night. This is also when the famous annual beauty pageant to crown Miss Lao New Year takes place in Luang Prabang.

4. SONGKRAN, THAILAND Finally, perhaps the most famous water festival in Southeast Asia is Songkran in Thailand, which takes place from April 13-15 each year. Mornings begin with offerings to local monks. Many people also pour water over statues of the Buddha as well as over the hands of their elders.

Of course, the water fights in the streets are what Songkran is most well-known for!

Arm up with a bucket, water gun, or even a hose, and go at it. Many major thoroughfares are closed to automotive traffic so that revelers can play safely. Wearing white? Be sure to wear a swimsuit underneath.

HOW YOUR RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL CAN SAVE CAMBODIA’S COUNTRY LAND

E

very year, Exotic Voyages books tours to Cambodia so our clients can visit the ruins of Angkor and other stunning sites. While we love having this chance to share Cambodia's beauty with travellers from around the world, the waste generated by millions of visitors per year is significant. Tourists in Cambodia in 2015 went through around 355,000 plastic disposable water bottles per day.

The combined amount of waste could fill about 26 Olympic-sized swimming pools with plastic every single year. And unfortunately in Cambodia, it often does. Most plastic waste doesn’t get recycled in Cambodia; instead, it winds up in landfills, or worse, strewn as litter across this country’s beautiful land. This detracts from the visual splendor of Cambodia while also disrupting the habitats of the wildlife which calls the country home.

At Exotic Voyages, we have searched long and hard to find a way to help our clients protect the beautiful land they are visiting. And now we are pleased to announce we have found a solution. We are now partnering with Refill Not Landfill, a groundbreaking campaign which seeks to reduce plastic bottle waste in Cambodia.

How does it work? With Refill Not Landfill, travellers in Cambodia are provided with durable aluminum bottles which can be re-used continuously for up to four years.

These bottles are offered by hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and cafes at key points throughout the country in locations like Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Kampot and Kep. All tourists who travel with us are now given a refillable aluminum Refill Not Landfill bottle directly. Hotels such as Jaya House River Park which we partner with offer refill stations conveniently on the premises. That way our travellers can refill their bottles with fresh, clean water before they head out for their daily activities.

Refilling bottles at stations participating in the program is always free. This combined with the sturdy, appealing design of the bottles helps to encourage their use, preventing tourists from falling back on the habit of disposable plastic water bottles. As a bonus, these bottles are aesthetically appealing and built to stand the test of time. They include screw tops and carabiner clips for style and convenience. That means that they double as great souvenirs for our clients.

Using refillable aluminum bottles is obviously far more convenient and affordable than stocking up on disposable plastic water bottles. But the real reward for all of us involved with this program is knowing that we are doing our part to help protect the environment.

In the past, there was no effective solution for the issue of water bottles. Travel companies, hotels, and tourists alike struggled with the knowledge that they were contributing to the pollution problem that plagues Cambodia—and so did we. Now we know we are doing our part to protect the land—and our customers can rest assured knowing they too are protecting the amazing country they are here to explore.

Just how big an impact has Refill Not Landfill had? Since launching in 2016, restaurants, hotels, and other partners throughout Cambodia have ordered over 41,000 bottles. Considering how many disposable plastic bottles those 41,000 re-usable bottles replaced, the impact added up fast. At this rate, over the next four years, it is estimated that participants in the program will manage to cut back waste by around 175 million plastic bottles. We are thrilled to be a part of that.

KHMER NEW YEAR?

In much of the western world, technology has supplanted traditional forms of play. Most people switch on their consoles or computers and dive into a world of virtual fun when they want to be entertained. But something gets lost amid all that modern gadgetry—and that is the joy of traditional games.

In Cambodia, a lot of the population lives by very basic means. As such, technology hasn’t gained as much of a foothold, and the Cambodian people still enjoy their traditional games and activities. During the Khmer New Year, these pastimes are particularly popular as a way to connect with the country’s cultural heritage and bring together family and friends. Here are the games which are most popular!

1. CHOL CHHOUNG This game is a tradition on the first day of the New Year. It is usually played with a lot of girls and boys—ten or twenty in each group. The groups stand facing each other in rows, and then throw a rolled-up scarf with a tail called a chhoung back and forth. If a player is hit by the chhoung, one group must all perform a traditional dance while the other sings, often cleverly improvising lyrics to tease their opponents.

2. CHAB KON KLENG This game, which is also popular with Vietnamese children, is traditionally played by Khmer adults during the New Year celebration in Cambodia. A number of players represent chicks, while one player is picked to be the hen. Another player takes on the role of a crow, attempting to catch the chicks. As the chicks attempt to hide behind the hen, they sing a bargaining song.

3. BOS ANGKUNH People split into two groups to play this New Year game. “Angkunh” are the large seeds of dried fruit.

During the game, the two teams face off and attempt to throw 3 or 5 of these Angkunh in a pyramid shape toward each other with around 8 meters spacing them out. The game is often played in schools, but may also be played in village squares.

5. BAY KHOM This game is a form of mancala. Ten holes need to be dug into the ground in order to create the “board.”

Pebbles, seeds or beads may be used as the pieces.

Five pieces each go into the two holes at one end, while four pieces go into each of the remaining holes.

As with other types of mancala, players attempt to move the pieces along the board and collect them according to the rules. The player who has the most pieces by the time the game is finished and the holes are all empty is declared the winner.

4. LEAK KANSENG In this game, children sit down in a circle. Similar to the Western game “Duck, Duck, Goose,” one of the children walks around the outside of the group. But whereas in “Duck, Duck, Goose,” the child taps a child on the head, in Leak Kanseng, he or she carries a scarf called a kanseng.

At some point, the child with the kanseng will attempt to secretly and stealthily place it on the ground behind one of the other children. As it may be some time before it is obvious that the scarf has been deposited, this increases the suspense over the Western version of the game. Once the child who was selected figures it out, he or she grabs the scarf and chases the other with it around the circle.

6. KLAH KLOK This is a game played with a mat and dice. While it is a form of gambling, it is played by both adults and children.

One player shakes some dice in a bowl.

The other players can bet on which faces of the dice will be oriented upward when they settle. Players who get one prediction right double their money.

Those who correctly predict how two of the dice will fall triple their money.

Those who get even more dice faces correct get even more money.
