Today, you see many different carabiner shapes. This applies to non load-bearing accessory carabiners, normal carabiners and locking carabiners. However, there are three main shapes: D-shaped, pear-shaped (HMS) and oval-shaped carabiners.
CARABINER SHAPE
D-shaped
Most normal carabiners, and also some locking carabiners, are D-shaped. The D-shape directs the load to the load-bearing back bar (major axis) which is the carabiner’s strongest point. This is a great advantage when it comes to quickdraws. The design ensures that the rope slips to the back bar of the carabiner. As well as ensuring optimal alignment and making it difficult to crossload, this has a further advantage. The rope is kept well away from the gate. This minimizes the risk of unintentional unclipping.

Carabiners – as climbers, we trust these small lightweight aluminium or steel connectors with our lives. However, it’s important to note that not all carabiners are suitable for climbing. Carabiners for fall protection have separate standards. Only carabiners which meet www.edelrid.de 4 to meet EU standards EN 12275 or EN 362 may be sold or used as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) against falling for mountain sports. PPE means any device or system intended to be worn or used by an individual to protect them against one or several risks that might jeopardise their 20160322_EN_Karabiner_Fibel_MH.indd 4 health or safety. How do I know if my carabiner is PPE certified? Look at the spine or back bar. Here, you’ll see its strength ratings and a four-digit CE mark. This means that your carabiner conforms to the EU standard.

HMS carabiners have two main characteristics: they have a very large gate opening and a large rope basket that can accommodate all knots. Pear-shaped carabiners are used in particular for belaying with an Italian hitch and with most belay devices. Thanks to their larger radius, they are also ideal for rigging belay stances. The large rounded pear-shaped design ensures that the knot can flip sides as it’s supposed to. This prevents a cross-loading situation and also reduces the risk that the knot might move and open the gate locking mechanism. Virtually all HMS carabiners are locking carabiners.
Oval-shaped
Oval-shaped carabiners are only used in special situations, for example, big wall aid climbing or in pulley systems. Their symmetrical design means that the load is always in the middle of the back bar (major axis). This is what makes oval-shaped carabiners ideal for setting up pulley systems and for use with jumars (ascenders).

ROPES ROPES
In recent decades the demands placed on modern climbing ropes have become more and more varied. Climbing and mountaineering have grown increasingly specialised and attract ever-greater numbers of participants. New disciplines have been created and grade boundaries are being pushed further and further. In order to cover the wide range of activities there are three different types of dynamic climbing ropes.

ROPES TESTING AND LABELLING
To be able to climb freely, you need to be able to completely trust in your equipment. In order to warrant this trust, ropes have a strict testing and quality management system in place. The quality attributes of the ropes are displayed on the individual labelling of each rope. All testing is done in accordance with the relevant standards and the testing facilities are regularly inspected by external agencies. Here is an overview of the main tests and information displayed on the packaging.
Batch number
Impact force
This long number is a rope’s specific identity number. It shows exactly which batch it was in and when it was produced. This is why it’s important to keep the packaging, or at least the label with this special number, for the entire lifespan of the rope as it makes it possible to trace its exact origins if necessary.
In conjunction with the drop test, we also measure impact force. The impact force is the maximum force on the load in a standard fall. It is greatly influenced by the ability of the rope to absorb fall energy through elongation. The higher the impact force, the harder the fall and the greater the force transmitted via the rope to the falling climber, the protection and the belay (safety chain) . The impact force for single and twin ropes may not exceed 12 kN (1200 kg). For half ropes the impact force may not exceed 8 kN (800 kg). In practise, impact force is not that relevant. This is because during testing in the laboratory, the rope is statically fixed. This is very different to a real-life situation. Climbing falls are generally caught and absorbed dynamically. The small amount of rope that runs through the belay device (e.g. a tuber) at the moment of impact and shock absorption by the harness and other protection points in the safety chain is enough to absorb a large part of the fall energy. In addition, dynamic belaying can also absorb a significant amount of fall energy. By an active forwards and upwards movement towards the wall at the moment of impact, the belayer can arrest a fall more gradually, making the impact softer on the climber, runners and belay.
Number of falls
The drop test is one of the most important tests for testing ropes. At our drop tower testing facility we determine how many standard falls a rope will withstand. A standard fall is an extremely hard fall. The hardness of a fall is determined by the fall factor. This is calculated by dividing the length of the fall, by the amount of rope paid out. The standard fall for testing purposes is predefined: a free fall of 4.8 metres with 2.8 metres of rope paid out. This produces a high fall factor of approx. 1.7. Falls this hard very rarely occur when climbing. This therefore allows us to provide large safety reserves. Single and twin ropes are tested in the drop tower by letting a weight of 80 kg fall and half ropes by letting a weight of 55 kg fall for as many times as it takes until the rope breaks. Single and half ropes are tested on their own, while twin ropes are tested as a pair. Single and half ropes must withstand at least five standard falls; a doubled twin rope has to withstand at least twelve standard falls.
Dynamic & static elongation
Elasticity and elongation are important attributes of a climbing rope. It’s important that a rope provides an optimally balanced elongation performance. As you will see from the labelling on our ropes, there are two different types of elongation.
Static elongation
Dynamic elongation
Static elongation is often aptly referred to as working elongation. It indicates the elasticity of a rope with a static load. Static elongation applies in particular to scenarios such as top-roping or hauling on big walls, etc. Here’s how it’s measured and tested. A rope is first loaded with 80 kg, then the weight is removed. After a brief pause, the rope is loaded again, this time with 5 kg and a 100cm length is marked. Then the rope is loaded a further time, once more with 80 kg. The deviation of the 100 cm length is the elongation, which is expressed as a percentage. For single and twin ropes, static elongation may not exceed 10 %. For half ropes, it may not exceed 12 %. This type of elongation is particularly noticeable when you are top-roping. Many of us will be familiar with having struggled to complete the crux on a route, only to stop, sit on the rope and then find ourselves back underneath it. This is (thankfully) due to static elongation.
Phone: 02 9417 5755, Fax: 02 9417 5722
The dynamic elongation of a rope reflects its ability to withstand impact force and its static elongation. The greater the impact force value of a rope, the less elongation it provides – and vice versa. A rope with a higher impact force value has less dynamic elongation and consequently less static elongation. A lower impact force value indicates that a rope has greater dynamic elongation. The relationship between impact force and elongation is one of the most important features of a rope. The dynamic characteristics of a rope decrease as it gets older. Frequent falls reduce the elasticity of the rope. When it comes to safety when climbing, dynamic elongation is more important than static elongation. In particular, dynamic elongation tells us more about the braking performance of a rope than static elongation. The dynamic elongation of a rope is measured by testing its first standard fall. It describes the amount of change in a rope’s length (as a percentage) at the moment of the fall. Climbing ropes may not exceed a maximum permissible elongation of 40%. The importance of dynamic elongation should not be underestimated. 8

ROPES TESTING AND LABELLING CONTINUED Weight per meter Knotability The weight of a rope is important, particularly for performanceorientated climbers and mountaineers. Rope weight is always indicated in grams per meter (g/m). Both weight and diameter are tested by preloading a rope and then measuring it. Rope manufacturing is constantly being pioneered and developed to bring ever lighter and simultaneously more robust ropes.
Knotability is not part of any specified standard for ropes. However, it provides a practical indication of how easy a rope is to use. It is primarily stated with static ropes and determined using the following test. A simple overhand knot is tied in a rope. The rope is then loaded with 10 kg in weight. Once the load is removed, the inner diameter of the knot is measured. The knot should be so tight that the inside width, i.e. the opening in the middle, is less than 1.1 times the rope’s diameter. However, we recommend not placing too much value on this measurement. In practice the knotability or suppleness of a rope is determined to a large extent by its condition and/or how well it has been looked after. A really dirty rope will generally be harder to tie a knot in than a new rope, no matter how supple it is.
Diameter
When choosing a rope, diameter is an important factor according to which activities you intend to use it for. Rope diameter is not always easy to measure, as not all ropes are perfectly round – some of them have a more oval cross section. To ensure consistency and provide reproducible values, a length of rope is loaded with weights and then measured. Interestingly, certain ropes on the market clearly deviate from their manufacturer’s information and are often thicker than claimed. This is because they have too much air between the yarns. In practice they are soft and spongy. By contrast, the compact and material-intensive structure of the ropes offered by Expedition Equipment leave little room for such abnormalities.
UIAA-Water-Repellent-Test
The UIAA water-repellent test is a new standard and test developed by the UIAA to measure the water repellency of ropes. During the test, a rope sample is first subjected to mechanical surface abrasion over its entire length. This simulates the wear a rope is subjected to in practice on rock and ice. In a standardized procedure, the rope sample is then fixed to a slanted table and subjected to a defined water flow (2l/min) for 15 minutes. The rope sample is weighed before and after the water flow. Finally the difference between these two values is calculated and expressed as a percentage. The amount of absorbed water must not be greater than 5 % of the rope sample’s weight. Ropes that meet these requirements may be labeled as UIAA water-repellent.
Sheath slippage
This parameter has a direct impact on the handling characteristics of a rope. To test sheath slippage a two-metre length of rope is pulled though a test device. By applying weights and using a defined mechanism the sheath and core are kneaded and twisted against each other. During this test, the axial displacement of the sheath may not exceed 20 mm. If the sheath and core of a rope slip, then it will bulge and get lumpy.

An offset D shaped connector takes the spinal loading strengths of a D shaped back but extends the basket on one side to maximize gate opening and overall size without compromising too much on ergonomics and weight. HARDWARE DMM STEEL 12MM KLETTERSTEIG
The Klettersteig shape takes the spinal loading strengths of a ‘D’ shaped carabiner and the basket volume increase of an ‘offset D’ and then extends them even further to give a high volume, super-strong connector. HARDWARE DMM AERO HMS
The Aero HMS has several features which raise it above the competition. For a start it’s hot forged – a process that allows us a much greater degree of freedom in the design and manufacturing process. A product of this very freedom is the anti snag Keylock nose. And then there is the extremely generous rope radius – a whopping 11.3mm!

GRIVEL OMEGA K6G TWIN GATE
A large-framed, pear-shaped carabiner with two solid gates makes this a belay biner. Surprisingly easy to clip and you don’t have to remember to lock a collar because the carabiner is always locked! With no locking collar or sleeve, the Mega doesn’t get hung up on the belay/rappel loop. Plus with no locking mechanism dirt & ice can’t seize it up! See video here EN 362 Product Code

DMM REVOLVER
The Revolver is well established as part of a comprehensive trad leading rack. In simple terms the carabiner uses rolling friction rather than the sliding friction of the rope over the bar typified by a standard carabiner. In this case the rope rolls over the pulley wheel which means much less friction is created. The Revolver also works well in rescue situations as a pulley. Product Code

EDELRID OHM
The problem: climbing partners with a significant difference in weight A significant difference in weight between lead climber and belayer frequently causes a problem. This applies in particular to climbing couples, where the woman is often significantly lighter than her partner. In the event of a fall, a lighter belayer can be suddenly pulled off the ground and hurled against the wall. In addition, when a belayer is pulled high off the ground, this significantly increases the distance that the leader falls. If the climber is still near the ground, belayer and climber might collide, or the climber might even hit the ground. Moreover, if a dynamic belay device is used (for example a tubular belay device) then a lighter belayer has to apply significant hand braking force to arrest the fall. In the worst-case scenario, the belayer might not be able to hold on to the rope. Their hand may get painfully burnt as the rope runs through the device or they may drop their partner completely. This is why the German and Swiss (DAV, SAC) mountaineering clubs recommend that a climber should not weigh more than 1.33 times their belayer, i.e. maximum 1/3 more (for example: belayer 60 kg, climber maximum
OHM
weight 80 kg). In the event of a big fall, in particular at the climbing wall, such large differences in weight already require extreme care and attention on the part of the belayer. Using a weight bag to reduce the difference in weight is not possible all the time (who wants to carry a weight bag to the crag?). In addition, weight bags restrict a belayer’s freedom of movement. And even when using a weight bag, the belayer still has to supply full braking force (risk of burns as rope runs through belay device).
10 Belay Devices 2017.indd 114
The solution: the OHM: assisted-
paying out rope. The device’s assisted braking mechanism is only activated in the event of a fall. The OHM also works independently to the belay device used. Should a lead climber fall at the first bolt, the OHM significantly reduces the risk of a possible ground fall. Lowering a heavier climber is also much easier to control due to the increased friction. This reduces the risk of accidents when lowering.

braking resistor to increase rope friction The OHM is an assisted-braking resistor to increase friction. It’s attached at the first bolt in the safety chain using a quickdraw and the rope runs through it. In the event of a fall, the OHM increases rope friction so that a lighter belayer can hold a heavier partner without difficulty. This helps prevent the belayer from being thrown forcefully against the wall. In addition, the belayer needs to apply significantly less hand braking force to arrest the fall. The OHM is designed not to affect rope handling when belaying a lead climber. It neither increases rope drag to the lead climber, nor has a negative effect when

ten. Im schlimmsten Fall kann der Sichernde das Seil nicht festhalten. Es kommt zu schmerzhaften Verbrennungen der Hand durch das durchlaufende Seil oder zu einem Komplettabsturz.
In the worst-case scenario, the belayer might not be able to hold on to the rope. Their hand may get painfully burnt as the rope runs through the device or they may drop their partner completely.

HOLDS
Polyurethane
Fixe have developed high quality raw materials, because holds are no longer what they used to be and every day climbers are demanding more in regards to the quality of their product. Polyester and their fillers belong in the past and Fixe are always looking towards the future by using pure resin, without any fillers, thus leaving them to act their mechanical properties, offering high durability and resistance to being worn out and chipped, flexibility in dryness and an incredible texture. Fixe work with their supplier of resins every day to continue improving the quality of the polyurethane.
Hollowback System
There are many reasons why Fixe created the vacuum system from all holds that require it. Using the Hollowback system, Fixe have reduced its weight by half, making the installation of this much easier and the route setter won't have to be loaded with such weight. Another advantage is that Fixe have reduced the price because of the large amount of material saved. Finally and most importantly, the hollowback system generate significantly less waste, thus having the same hold with much less material, waste and cost.
