The many tales of Robin and his merry men have been enchanting audiences the world over for many centuries and you’ll find the famous outlaw’s folklore is kept very much alive with sights and attractions all over the county.

Nearby, Wheelgate theme park also pays homage to the legend with its very own Robin Hood Water Park. A great family adventure where kids can get wet and wild in the UK’s largest outdoor water park.

This year is no exception as 2014 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Robin Hood Festival set in the spectacular backdrop of Sherwood Forest, once one of Robin’s hideouts. The festival, which takes place in August, attracts enthusiasts from all over the world and this year’s event promises to be a great spectacle as the life and times of England’s folklore son are celebrated. Immerse yourself in history as the merry men and fair maidens among you are transformed back to medieval times as you marvel at street performers and jousting displays in this week-long celebration. Look out for the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham as well as the man in tights himself!

The Robin Hood Town Tour, where you will meet the man himself and hear his legendary tales as he takes you on a journey to discover the history and culture of our beautiful city, is an absolute must.

The enchanting village of Edwinstowe, situated on the edge of Sherwood Forest is where you’ll find St Mary’s Church where Robin and his fair maiden, Maid Marion are said to have tied the knot. In the village high street stands a fitting monument to the couple’s love story which is a top tip for a memorable photo opportunity.

Robin Hood lives on in Nottingham!

Ezekial Bone plays the Robin Hood of the 21st century and can also lead you onto optional tours of Sherwood Forest. Follow the arrow to these crowd pulling Robin Hood events this year The Robin Hood Game & Country Show, held at the Newark Showground in October, is the largest Game & Country Show in the East Midlands with fun fuelled demonstrations and spectacular displays. See the grounds of Nottingham Castle transform into a medieval village encampment for the annual Robin Hood Pageant, once home to Robin Hood’s arch enemy, the Sheriff of Nottingham. The Castle welcomes a range of colourful characters and takes you back in time to the 12th century every October.

In the same month the CAMRA Robin Hood Beer Festival is also held in the Castle grounds. This sell-out event gives visitors the opportunity to sample the widest choice of draught cask conditioned beers in the world. There is a staggering collection of 1,100 different real ales and 220 real ciders. With fine food and entertainment on offer too, this is a weekend for all merry men, women and children alike. One of Nottingham’s most recognised and loved monuments is the Robin Hood statue which stands just outside of the Castle grounds. Visitors flock to replicate his pose for the camera. Definitely one for sharing on social media – don’t forget to include the #lovenotts tag!

Lord Byron

D.H Lawrence

Pilgrim Fathers

Lord Byron was the most fashionable and famous poet of Georgian England. Take a journey through his scandalous past on The Byron Trail which will take you to Newstead Abbey, Byron’s beautiful historic home, as well as many other related sites including his final resting place, St Mary’s Church. The International Byron Festival takes place in June with many activities for all interests.

Novelist D.H Lawrence who was most famous for novels Sons and Lovers and the controversial Lady Chatterley’s Lover grew up in the small Nottinghamshire town of Eastwood where the D.H Lawrence Museum and Heritage Centre is set. It is a multi award winning attraction where you’ll step back in time to the Victorian ages and discover more about the famous writer. His life and works are brought to life in the annual D.H Lawrence Festival in September.

The legendary story of the Pilgrim Fathers is a historic one and part of Pilgrim Country lies in Nottinghamshire. It was over 400 years ago that their journey began but their story is brought to life on the Mayflower Pilgrim tours. The tour will give you exclusive access to Scrooby Manor, once home to the Pilgrim Fathers.

Join Nottinghamshire’s very own commemoration of the WWI centenary 2014 marks the 100 year anniversary since the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. It will be commemorated in Nottinghamshire with a special programme of nostalgic and memorable events called ‘Trent to Trenches’ taking place throughout the year.

Some of the 100+ events taking place include a living history event at Rufford Abbey featuring song and dance, children’s activities and period re-enactments, a major exhibition at Nottingham Castle and the ‘Fields of Battle’ – an open air exhibition in the city which will be its first UK public appearance outside of London. IN NOTTS WE LOVE our most celebrated war hero Captain Albert Ball VC, described as the most daring, skilful and successful pilot the Royal Flying Corps ever had and their most famous ace during the Great War. His honours include the Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and two bars – the first person in the British Army to be so awarded. He is thought to have brought down a staggering 77 planes before his untimely death in service, at the age of just 20.

Albert’s accomplishments were so recognised, even after death, that King George V visited the city to present his parents with the Victoria Cross in an official ceremony at The Old Market Square. A memorial statue was erected in his honour in the grounds of Nottingham Castle, which still stands proudly today. Albert’s Victoria Cross is housed in the Castle museum, with other memorabilia of our fallen legend also on display at the Museum of Nottingham Life at Brewhouse Yard.

Newark Air Museum brings historic aviation to life. Located on the former World War II airfield at Winthorpe, near Newark, the museum has a staggering 74 aircraft and cockpit sections with 21 aircraft listed in the National Aviation Heritage Register. The museum includes collections of aviation artefacts and aero engines and holds a significant archive that provides an insight into many aviation subjects. The British Army cavalry through the years Be immersed in stories of the Nottinghamshire Cavalry Regiments, The Queen’s Royal Lancers, The Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry and The South Nottinghamshire Hussars at this fascinating museum that tells the human, social and military history of these fine Regiments and the ongoing story of the British Army today. The Queen’s Royal Lancers and Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Museum at Thoresby Courtyard allows you to wander through the history of the cavalry from the days of the horseback charge, the great tank battles of the Second World War, to present-day operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The centre only asks for voluntary donations from visitors in return for an inspiring day out.

The English Civil War

It was in Nottingham on 22 August 1642, that Charles I raised his royal standard as a signal for his supporters to rally to his side. Taking place just outside Nottingham Castle, the event effectively marked the beginning of the civil war. A plaque on Standard Hill, near the castle, commemorates the historic event. Today, in the Nottinghamshire market town of Newark, stands the remains of Newark Castle where you can follow the Civil War Trail, which takes in many of the sites and buildings that relate to the Civil War period. It highlights buildings where there is still evidence of the Civil War, such as the stonework of the castle which is blackened in parts from the gunpowder used by Parliamentary forces, and the church spire where a hole marks the spot where the shot from a Parliamentarian canon is said to have struck the church in 1644.

The first Civil War Centre in the country will open in Newark, Nottinghamshire in 2015 which will tell the story of one of the greatest conflicts in English history.

The National Holocaust Centre and Museum – a moving and inspiring experience Tucked away in the village of Laxton, near Newark, you’ll find the UK’s most poignant place of remembrance for victims of the Holocaust, which began in South East Germany ahead of the Second World War. The museum covers Jewish life in Europe and the journey to concentration and death camps as well as survival and post-war justice. A visit isn’t complete without taking in a guest survivor talk. ‘The Journey’ is the first Holocaust exhibition in the UK created for younger children which follows a fictional Jewish child. However, the journey starts from the minute you arrive at the centre in the beautifully landscaped memorial gardens which provide space for reflection and remembrance amongst over 800 dedicated white roses.

Take The Big Track, a fantastic waterside city ride where you can enjoy a 10 mile car free route that runs between Trent Bridge and Beeston Marina along the River Trent and canal and offers some truly glorious sites.

Nottingham and cycling go hand in hand as our bicycle heritage includes the world famous Raleigh brand which was founded here in 1887. The Nottingham Industrial Museum, located in the courtyard of Wollaton Hall Park and Deer Farm, which celebrates Nottingham’s rich industrial heritage, hosts a selection of Raleigh bicycles where the star piece is an original Thomas Humber bicycle from 1892. 01

Cycling in Nottinghamshire is a wheely great experience, with an abundance of routes across the county which take in some truly magnificent views. What better place for a cycle route than in the heart of the iconic Sherwood Forest. The Ancient Sherwood Route and the Adventure Pine Route off road routes are both designed to take a full day with planned refreshment stops, activities and time to enjoy the attractions. The family can enjoy the 5 mile Clumber Park trail which is part of their 20 mile cycle network. You could even try the Clumber to Sherwood Pines loop. The ‘Wiggins’ effect quickly spread across the country after the 2012 Olympics and since then cycling has become increasingly popular, not just as a sport but a loveable pastime. Sporting history is synonymous with Nottinghamshire and probably no sport more so than our football legacies. Just a few minutes’ walk from Trent Bridge you’ll find the oldest existing football club in the world, Notts County (aka The Magpies) and then just across the river is Nottingham Forest Football Club’s City Ground – which was put firmly on the map, all thanks to outspoken football manager and sporting legend, Brian Clough who was manager between 1977 and 1993. If you visit the city make sure you take a picture of ‘old big ‘ed’ himself at the Brian Clough Memorial Statue by the Old Market Square.

Enter The City of Caves at the Intu Broadmarsh shopping centre where you’ll then descend far below street level to discover how the caves were used as tanneries, bomb shelters and homes. On a separate adventure, discover the secret passageways and dungeons beneath the legendary Nottingham Castle where caves date back to medieval times. Hear gruesome tales of King David II of Scotland or Sir Roger Mortimer, whose ghost is reputed to haunt probably the most famous of all caves, Mortimer’s Hole. You may need someone’s hand to hold as The Nottingham Ghost Walk leads you on an eerie journey through the haunted caves beneath Ye Olde Salutation Inn, a public house dating back to the 13th century. And a top local tip, if you have never enjoyed a meal or beverage in a cave then visit the city’s Hand

and Heart on fashionable Derby Road or the acclaimed oldest inn in England, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem located at the foot of the Castle grounds. Both pubs started life as breweries and are set amongst ancient sandstone caves. Willoughby House, Sir Paul Smith’s flagship store, has caves behind it which is an early example of ‘Gentleman’s Caves’ – a carefully designed wine cellar with architectural features. Not only that, there is a network of three caves beneath the store! A museum beneath the city The only museum of its kind in Europe, The Galleries of Justice Museum in the former Shire Hall, boasts an underground ‘gaol’ dating back to the 18th century. Discover the sinister and grim stories of Nottinghamshire’s outlaws as they are brought to life in the very place where they were judged, imprisoned and executed.

Over at ‘Batman’s pad’, just outside of the city, you can venture underneath Wollaton Hall, a beautiful Elizabethan Manor built in the 1500s steeped in history and featured in the Warner Bros production of The Dark Knight in 2012. Situated in between the villages of Creswell and Whitwell the glory of Creswell Crags is not to be missed. A world famous archaeological site set in a limestone gorge honeycombed with caves and smaller fissures, and home to the World’s oldest ice age art! Discover the woolly mammoth and what the Crags were like during the Ice Age and take a tour of the Robin Hood Cave, the largest cave on site. Visit the on site museum where you’ll be amazed by the state of the art displays of the most important finds from the caves.

The ‘Diamond Reign’ brew came next in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee, not forgetting the latest recipe, ‘Baby George’. Castle Rock Brewery also supports Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust with a range of seasonal beers to promote the conservation of Nottinghamshire Wildlife. The Navigation Brewery is a micro-brewery housed in the old stable block behind The Trent Navigation pub, close to the Notts County football ground. Robin Hood famously wore Lincoln Green and our legend is clearly the inspiration behind one of Nottingham’s newest breweries, Lincoln Green Brewing Company. It’s not a surprise to see ales such as Hood, Marion, Tuck and Sherwood not to mention the array of quirky celebratory brews. Have a pint of Lincoln Green or Pheasantry’s Ale aboard the Castle Barge in Newark, a former grain barge, now a pub and restaurant. Drink and dine with riverside views overlooked by the famous Newark Castle. Our local brews can be found in many pubs across the county as well as at The CAMRA Robin Hood Beer Festival where you’ll get to taste not only Nottinghamshire ales but the world’s largest selection of real ales, ciders and perries. A sell out four day event each October, so book early! The Canalhouse, a Castle Rock Brewery pub, is as unique as pubs come with a canal running through it – complete with barge. No trip to Nottingham is complete without a visit to The Malt Cross, one of city’s finest historical gems. A former Victorian music hall, where it’s believed Charlie Chaplin performed before hitting big time fame. Are yer mashing duck? We know not everybody likes a beverage of the alcoholic kind and there isn’t a drink that is more quintessentially English than a cup of tea. Then join us in Nottingham across three ‘In Notts We Love Dance’ summer weekends in 2014, as we celebrate our biggest ever programme of world class dance events. Commencing 26th June, Nottingham plays host to the U.Dance 2014 Festival. Youth Dance England, in partnership with international dance organisation Dance4, presents a prestigious and exciting dance festival made for and performed by young people. Over 400 young performers will descend upon the city to showcase their inspirational performances across world-class venues, including Nottingham Playhouse, Lakeside Arts Centre and Theatre Royal Concert Hall amongst others. Nottingham’s Old Market Square in the centre of the city will be brought to life with free events for all and the first weekend’s theme being street dance, urban dance. The Great Central Railway (Nottingham) offers 9 miles of heritage railway running through South Nottinghamshire and North Leicestershire. Papplewick Pumping Station was a fresh water pumping station for Nottingham and is now a museum, wedding venue and Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Pumping Station steams its engines eight times a year, including Bank Holidays. When not in steam the station is open on Sundays only.
