what to serve
Polo Tailgating beyond the picnic, here are some of the food and chalet trends you need to know By Jordan Miller
[This season, outdoor dining is making a big comeback in home collections. However, those of us who frequent Sunday Polo know that there are few things better than enjoying an exciting match from the fabulous chalets.
1
Here are some tips and trends for this season and everything you will need to outfit your chalet (as well as a tip on what to bring if you get invited to one). 1. Wares | Keep the grass greener, the air cleaner and make a statement about sustainability with natural VerTerra Dinnerware as the option for utensils at your chalet.
3 2
2. The Plates | With plastic now coming in all shapes, sizes and quality; there is no need to bring china out on the field. Keep it fun, festive and mix and match shapes. It makes a big difference. 3. The Bubbles | While it is convenient that they are one of the International Polo Club’s official sponsors, we would be recommending you fill the coolers with Clicquot regardless. Few things go better with polo, fashion and fun. 4. The Food | This spring, food trends continue to feature locally sourced foods at tables across the country. Your chalet should be no different. So if you are going to serve chilled shrimp cocktail, serve native Key West Pinks which are available in markets across the state from March - May.

The husband and wife started playing polo more than a decade ago. Since then, the owners of the Wellington-based Grand Champions Polo Club have been changing the face of polo at one of the nation’s fastest growing polo clubs. Basics

what you need to know about the equestrian sports that you’ll see By Jordan Miller Illustrations Jordan Miller
[You know you want to have a
basic understanding of what you’re watching if you head out to the events this season. Here is a quick glance at what you need to know to understand the basics. 1. Dressage | Is a competitive equestrian sport, defined by the International Equestrian Federation as “the highest expression of horse training”, where “horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements.” Think of it as a ballet of sorts. Judges evaluate each movement on the basis of an objective standard appropriate to the level of the test and assign each movement a score from zero to ten – zero being “not executed” and 10 being “excellent” 2. Polo | A team sport played on horseback in which the objective is to score goals against an opposing team. Players score by driving a small white plastic or wooden ball into the opposing team’s goal using a long-handled mallet. The traditional sport of polo is played at speed on a large grass field up to 300 yards long by 160 yards wide, and each polo team consists of four riders and their mounts. The modern game lasts roughly two hours and is divided into periods called chukkers. The crowd joins in during it’s equivalent of half-time and help stomp the divots of grass back into place on the field (and sip champagne).
22

3. Jumping | In show jumping, the goal is for the rider to clear all of the “obstacles” or jumps in the arena in the shortest amount of time. In order to “clear” a jump both the horse and rider must make it over the jump together, no part of the horse or rider may touch the jump, and the jump must remain completely intact. Show jumping is divided into five rounds and can feature both team and individual competitions.

Vinceremos
touching lives, making a difference
What began as small project in a friend’s backyard, has become a local force in helping children and adults with developmental, physical and psychological disabilities conquer the challenges they face. From a backyard to leased acreage where rain was in the daily weather forecast, the center now has a covered arena with 45,500 square feet and is serving over 140 riders per week. How did it all get started and how did they make it happen? When you ask their team, the answer is unanimous – community. The initial idea for the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center was first envisioned in the 1960’s when Charlotte Smith took her 10 year old daughter, Ruth, to visit the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center in Augusta, Michigan. On her quest to purchase a horse, Ruth ended up raising a blue ribbon cow in 4-H. After selling her champion cow, she used the proceeds to buy her first horse, Cinnamon. Cinnamon would become one of the two horses to start Vinceremos. 24
Once Ruth graduated from Florida State University in 1981 with a degree in therapeutic recreation, she made it her mission to open the doors to a place where she could bring people together with therapeutic equestrian treatments.
By Jordan Miller Photo Rochalle Stewart
“The only way we’ve been able to support this organization for 30 years is through the community by volunteering and donations. There is no government funding for these types of things, it’s all by private donations,” said Executive Director Ruth Menor. “Even the horses are donated.” Since 2000, the organization has grown exponentially, becoming one of the area’s most important charities. Now they seek to complete their next phase of construction. For years, the Vinceremos horses, tack, feed and equipment have been kept around the property in numerous buildings, some requiring hip boots for entry during the rainy season. Their team now needs your help to build new stabling that will include stalls for all the horses, a climate controlled tack room, feed room and wash stalls in one convenient location under the spectacular covered arena. We think it is one of the best ways to give back this season.
Today, Vinceremos has 23 horses, a volunteer corps of over 55 individuals and relies on the support of private For additional information or to visit donors who help keep the barn doors their facilities, contact them at 561open and the programs functioning. 792-9900 or at vinceremos.org.

Scott Swerdlin | The Professional
President of Palm Beach Equine Clinic
1. What brought you to Wellington? I was born and raised in S. Florida. My father played polo at the old polo grounds in West Palm Beach and Gulfstream Polo Club. As a child, I always wanted to be a veterinarian and take care of horses. After serving as a veterinarian in the United States Air Force Veterinary Core, I teamed up with Dr. Paul Wollenman. Palm Beach Equine Clinic started from humble beginnings and thanks to the rapid growth of the equestrian industry, the hospital has grown to 22 veterinarians, a staff of 40, and one of the premier veterinary centers in the United States. 2. What keeps you in Wellington? It’s the best place in the world to live. You have every cultural advantage of being in a large metropolis, yet I work in a rural area that is unique to our industry. The horses, the culture, the excitement and the opportunity to practice the best veterinary medicine in the world. Most of all, the commitment to the veterinarians and staff at Palm Beach Equine Clinic. 3. How has Wellington changed in the last 10 years? There is certainly more horses and opportunity. The infrastructure of the equestrian community is spectacular with the growth of the different equestrian sport disciplines. It is also extremely convenient to have great shopping within a mile and a half of the equestrian overlay zoning district.
“Hands down Wellington is the equestrian capital.
4. In your opinion, what makes us the equestrian capital? The massive investment in the equestrian overlay zoning district. The fact that we have the best polo in the United States and Europe, that we have the best Dressage in the world and there is no question that the hunter/jumper competition is the largest and most competitive in the world. Depending on whose census, there are between 11,000 to 13,000 horses in Wellington during the winter season. Hands down, Wellington is the equestrian capital. 5. How do you see growth here in 10 years? I am truly worried that a few individuals may attempt to reduce the competition opportunities and limit future equestrian growth. My hope is that Wellington will bring the World Equestrian Games to our exciting city. My vision would be that the city officials work in concert with the Games promoters and sponsors to bring the WEG to Wellington and showcase our city as a unique equestrian opportunity.

1. What brought you to Wellington? My family was riding at the Winter Equestrian Festival and we loved it so much we moved here. 2. What keeps you in Wellington? It is a great place to live and raise a family. 3. How has Wellington changed in the last 10 years? With the growth of the horse show, the Village has so much more to offer in terms of great shops and restaurants. You can find everything you want in Wellington. 4. In your opinion, what makes us the equestrian capital? We have a unique position with Polo and our facilities that are the best in the world. We now have the sponsors to create significant prize money to attract the very best international riders who are now making Wellington their winter home. 5. How do you see growth here in 10 years? I believe that the major growth will be in the shoulder periods of the season Already we have seen people coming earlier and staying later and over the next 10 years this will grow and grow.

John Wash | The President
International Polo club, Wanderers club
1. What brought you to Wellington? I was the vice president of operations at the 1,400-acre Bentwater Yacht and Country Club in Montgomery, Texas, which is an upscale private community that featured (among many things) 54 holes of golf. In 2007, the International Polo Club purchased The Wanderers Club, with plans to renovate the club and elevate the amenities and club lifestyle. A friend recommended me for the top position. I flew to Wellington for an interview, which I must have aced, as I was offered the position of president of both The Wanderers Club and the International Polo Club. I was impressed with the potential of both clubs and the commitment to create premier facilities that would have national and international appeal. After a tour of Wellington, I was confident that my family would enjoy living in such a beautiful place. The rest, as they say, is history. IPC is the foremost polo facility in the world, and The Wanderers Club has transformed into an elegant country club with a thriving membership. 2. What keeps you in Wellington? My wife Toy and I found that Wellington is an ideal place to call home. The people are active in the community and passionate about where they live. We have five children and four grandchildren, the schools here are top-rated, and property values have remained stable. The Village sponsors a rich variety of community events that bring families together, and zoning laws are strictly enforced. We enjoy the parks, recreation centers, shopping districts, and the country feel of the neighborhoods. The unique setting personifies a sophisticated, cosmopolitan lifestyle, while maintaining a casual hometown touch. My position as the president of the International Polo Club and The Wanderers Club, fortunately, keeps us in Wellington. I enjoy the challenge of continuously enhancing the two facilities and the excitement of running two world-class clubs. So, I feel very blessed. 3. How has Wellington changed in the last 10 years? Wellington has evolved from a sleepy suburb to a vibrant, upscale village in the heart of everything. The natural beauty of the neighborhoods and equestrian estates creates an enduring, enviable lifestyle. In the last 10 years, we have seen remarkable positive growth. New shopping and entertainment districts, new 30

medical facilities, and new businesses have emerged – from retail to professional services. The equestrian community has grown along with it, with new polo fields, barns, stables, and exciting equestrian events. Wellington was a great place 10 years ago, and it is an even better place today. 4. In your opinion, what makes us the equestrian capital? During my tenure, the extraordinary transformation of IPC has been a driving factor in branding Wellington as the nation’s equestrian capitol. We host the largest field of high-goal teams and the most prestigious polo tournaments in the United States. The International Polo Club is home to America’s Triple Crown – the three highest rated polo tournaments on the continent: the C.V. Whitney Cup, the Piaget USPA Gold Cup®, and the Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championship®. We enhanced and expanded the stadium seating with private boxes for members and select guests, along with the Wellington Zone, which offers food and beverages to spectators. The addition of several new and professional polo fields for weekday competition, and the transition two years ago of the Sunday Brunch experience from a tent to the present-day, 12,000-squarefoot dining facility, were key projects I directed to garner greater visibility for the sport and to attract new fans to the game. IPC is a leading revenue generator in the western communities, boosting our local economy through the millions of dollars spent here by the polo and equestrian industry, and by creating hundreds of local jobs. However, the greatest contributor to IPC’s success is the overwhelming support we have received from the western communities. The people who live here caught the excitement of polo, and embraced the sport and our facility. We appreciate everyone who has purchased a ticket, and every business that supported us through sponsorships, season tailgates, and corporate tickets sales. No one achieves success alone, and we are grateful that so many have championed us along the way. To ensure that Wellington retains its global position as the “Equestrian Capital,” IPC will redouble its efforts in the upcoming decade in serving the community that has been so generous to us. You will see my executive team and staff participate at every level – from coaching cheerleading to serving on chamber boards, from volunteering our time at civic events to sponsoring charitable events or working at school fund raising drives. We believe in giving back to the community where we work, raise our families, and grow
our business. Our goal for the next decade is to be the best community partner possible, while continuing to be the epicenter of the polo world. 5. How do you see growth here in 10 years? We see a strong and steady growth for many years to come of the equestrian community and the industry it supports in Wellington. Wellington is considered the Winter Equestrian Capitol of the World, with elite equestrian venues, high-caliber equestrian events, and world-class tournaments and competitions. I predict in the upcoming years that equestrian sports will grow in popularity, attracting a new generation of accomplished polo players and talented riders to Wellington. With the enhanced global recognition that comes with an expanded, energized fan base, the equestrian industry will increase along with it. National and international media outlets have broadened their coverage of the sport worldwide, and IPC has a fulltime public relations team providing news, player profiles, and tournament coverage to every media platform, including TV, print, and online. In the past year, we have also created stories on fashion, food, social events, family participation, and even celebrities to strategically capture feature placement in hundreds of other outlets that are not necessarily sports- oriented. The NBC Sports Network aired the Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championship for the first time last season, and we are negotiating with NBC to air additional tournaments this season. By all entities working and supporting one another, the growth of Wellington’s equestrian industry will be unstoppable. EC

Robert Dover | The Athlete Olympic athlete, dressage
1. What brought you to Wellington? I came to Wellington in 1982 to live in this budding horse community where stadium jumping was building a larger competition series that would hopefully incorporate dressage. In 1983, I won the first Palm Beach Dressage Derby Grand Prix in nearby White Fences, hosted by Howald and Gisela Pferdekamper and Janne Rumbough. It was the beginning of an exciting future of our equestrian paradise. 2. What keeps you in Wellington? There is no place where the finest riders and horses from around the world can come and enjoy gorgeous weather and fabulous shows from November through April. Wellington is heaven for horse people! 3. How has Wellington changed in the last 10 years? The past 10 years has seen tremendous growth in Wellington as a “true town”, both in a positive and sometimes negative way. We have access to so many more resources such as great restaurants, but also have to deal with the politics that did not so much affect us as a tiny village of mostly horse-lovers. 4. In your opinion, what makes us the equestrian capital? With the most prestigious series in the world for both jumping and dressage as well as the very best polo anywhere, Wellington is absolutely the winter “Mecca” for horse people. 5. How do you see growth here in 10 years? The growth within the equestrian community in Wellington has been exponential over the past 10 years, thanks mostly to stadium jumping, led by the late, great, Gene Mische, Equestrian Sport Productions, led by Mark Bellissimo, which took over from stadium jumping, and the International Polo Club. Wellington is absolutely the home to equestrian sports.

The Wellington Market a great address, becomes one of the most prestigious in the country Since it’s inception, our community has always been a great place to live. Until the last decade or so, it was considered to be a best-kept secret of sorts. Yes, there have always been beautiful properties, large barns and equestrian estates mixed in with single-family homes and properties but over the last ten years, word has gotten out and the landscape has evolved.
With properties ranging between several hundred thousand dollars and reaching into the tens of millions, it is a unique market where a wide range of price points allows a wide range of buyers to shop for their next home.
Now, from CNN to Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, and a multitude of other publications, Wellington is on the heat map for people seeking the lifestyle that has come to define us. From Bill Gates to Michael Bloomberg and Bruce Springsteen to Tommy Lee Jones - influential people and celebrities around the world have taken note (and purchased property). “Wellington has become a player in the national and international real estate arena,” said Tom Baldwin, one of the Managing Partners of Equestrian Sotheby’s International Realty. “Sotheby’s has offices across the globe and we get inquiries from every corner of the planet when people are looking for equestrian property.” Most particularly within the 9,200acre area known as the Equestrian Preserve, property values and demand for land has increased at a pace much higher than across Florida and the rest of the country. “The closer to the show grounds, the more valuable the property becomes,” said Baldwin. For those on the market, as well as residents, proximity to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center is a premium people are willing to pay for.
By Jordan Miller
“We have continued to see growth in the market and 2014 should be a banner year as the season begins,” said Baldwin. This year Baldwin’s team has gone as a far as producing a catalog in conjunction with Sotheby’s offices in New York showcasing properties side by side for potential buyers in both markets. “We wanted to do something to showcase the community. This piece allows us to highlight the vast property types in the community and showcase the lifestyle at the same time.” By partnering with the International Polo Club and the Wanderer’s Club, as well as local builders and real estate industry professionals, Baldwin and his team are going beyond investing in property promotion, they are promoting the entire community and it’s lifestyle. “Wellington has a lot to offer and we wanted to make sure to present a complete picture of the lifestyle,” he said.

As higher profile equestrian events continue to be attracted to the community, and more potential buyers visit and eventually invest in property; the market is poised for growth. Already, the area has seen a major influx of people from over seas who are ready to invest; more specifically South America. Every indication points to continued growth in market demand with property becoming more and more limited. While current values are still below the peak of 2006, there are many that believe it is only a matter of time. Check out the new Sotheby’s catalog at equestriansircatalog.com
