WELCOME STUDIOS OPEN 11am–5pm 19 & 20 26 & 27 NOVEMBER 2016 6&7 MAY 2017
Welcome to a brand new year of the Nillumbik Artists Open Studios Program. We are delighted to be introducing nine new artists to the program, each weaving a unique layer into the rich and diverse tapestry of practices and creative spaces that makes this program so special. This year we continue to support young and emerging artists whilst honouring those who will be celebrating an official 30 years of friendship come 2017. Collectively our 33 artists have exhibited across the globe, from Europe, US and Asia as well as nationally across Australia yet it is the hills of the Nillumbik Shire that are home for the creative soul. The 2016/2017 program will see the launch of a brand new website for Nillumbik Artists Open Studios that we encourage you to explore and map your very own artistic trail. We are taking you on a journey to pockets of the beautiful Nillumbik Shire that have yet been traversed by this program such as Plenty and Nutfield, so pick up a coffee and engage in an adventure!

We hope you make new relationships and connections with the people and places that you encounter throughout your journey of the Nillumbik Artists Open Studios. Elanna Sanderson, Coordinator
ABOUT Nillumbik
ARTISTS OPEN STUDIOS
The Nillumbik Artists Open Studios program has graciously evolved over the past 29 years, from what was once loosely seen as an occasion for a small number of local artists to get together collectively and share their creative spaces, to what is now a unique and privileged opportunity for people to step into the heart and soul of artistic studios twice a year. The program’s trajectory and success are the result of the dedicated group of volunteer artists who have taken a great deal of pride in fostering a sense of community and connectedness with artists alike and harnessed the motivation to share their sites of inspiration and artistic vision with the broader public. The Nillumbik Shire is steeped in artistic culture and hosts a prolific history of some of Australia’s most legendary artists. This sense of history and place is evident in the artistic culture of the region. The Nillumbik region has always attracted and nurtured those with an artistic vision.
Artwork from left to right: Mel Rayski-Mati, Rolling Mary Lou Pittard, Pasta Bowls Karena Goldfinch, Poppy Love
An Open Studio invitation provides visitors with the rare glimpse of dirty paint brushes, burning kilns, blank canvases, sculpting tools, reels of film, pieces of recycled timber, piles of tiles, grey lead shavings and those artworks that didn’t quite make the cut. It is like stepping into a laboratory where the artists have full rein for experimentation and play. You find yourself surrounded by artifacts, history and landscapes that provide the stimuli for what may ultimately be observed by many only in a gallery space. Pulling back the layers to unique personal narratives allows visitors to discover the artwork in a more personal intimate way, and that is the true beauty of our Nillumbik Artists Open Studios Program.

Nicola predominantly uses steel to create sculptural pieces for the home and garden. Her preference is to produce abstract visual art, allowing exploration of both the conscious and sub conscious mind. Being a self taught artist she finds great freedom and pleasure in the creative process. Nicola welcomes visitors to her studio to discuss the thoughts and processes of sculptural steelwork.
Retired from a career of teaching ceramics at the Diploma level, Sue’s work is now her own personal indulgence. Her contemporary studio work contains a variety of pots and vessels. Saggar fired bottles are a signature feature, as too are the delicate, impressed textures in her porcelain jewellery. A strong interest in Asian tea-ware is evident in the functional work that is produced alongside domestic table ware. Commissions, work for competitions and exhibition deadlines are usually on her agenda.

A background in the building industry has given Tim Read of Tread Sculptures, a strong technical foundation from which he can create form. After spending some time meandering through the bush sculpture track at ‘Mingalaba’, you will appreciate why Tim, would rather spend his days in his studio on the banks of the Yarra River than anywhere else. Tim works with reclaimed steel and derives inspiration from nature, spirituality, and the materials he finds. Visitors are able to discover his artwork out in the natural bush setting, as well as wandering through his studio and the ‘boneyard’ of collected steel material.

Jessica Rae creates ceramics that reflect the natural landscape of her home in the Bend of Islands. Minimal use of glaze on functional ware forms a direct contrast to the use of traditional Japanese glazes on her sculpture pieces. Jessica Rae’s ceramic journey began fifteen years ago after a series of night classes while working as an Environmental Engineer. Recognising her heart was synonymous with clay, she decided to take the plunge and complete a Diploma of Ceramics, now her dream of becoming a full time ceramicist has been realised.

FORGING AHEAD 16 Wattletree Road, Hurstbridge M: 0466 726 687 E: info@forgingahead.com.au W: forgingahead.com.au
Sandra joined Open Studios in November 2013. Since then, she’s had remarkable success selling her oil paintings direct from her studio, where she is able to charge up to 40% less than the prices on her webpage. Her paintings are all about people interacting, usually in amusing circumstances. She paints intuitively, aided by her extensive theatrical background.
Mel’s love of the way metal can be bent, rolled and folded, stems from the fact that something of such strength can be manipulated into something of such beauty. When Mel is working with hammer and forge, fire and steel she loves nothing more than recreating natural shapes, like leaves, ferns, feathers and animals. Studio open 7 days by appointment.

She recently graduated from the National Art School, Sydney, producing sculptures that use porcelain drapery as a metaphor for the female body. Since commencing her residency at Dunmoochin her work has reflected her response to the solitude of the bush.

JUDY TREMBATH
I am near to completing a two year residency at Dunmoochin, a retreat center for artists and writers who want to be able to exclusively focus on their art. Dunmoochin provides the ideal setting for a landscape painter because it is surrounded by a covenant that helps to preserve the native vegetation and the fauna in a way that slows the encroachment of the outside world.

THE BALDESSIN PRESS & STUDIO 90 Shaftesbury Avenue, St Andrews M: 0428 352 822 E: karenagoldfinch@bigpond.com Many of my images feature birds, I am fascinated W: karenagoldfinch.com
by their behaviour, their ability to navigate and the way they communicate to each other. What is this internal mapping system that birds seem to have and just what are they saying to each other? They are a constant source of inspiration to me and I stalk them whenever I can!
THE BALDESSIN PRESS & STUDIO 90 Shaftesbury Avenue, St Andrews M: 0438 761 098 E: roberthails@bigpond.com W: baldessinpress.com.au
Robert works mostly on zinc plates to produce elegant and sometimes whimsical etchings. He loves exploring with aquatint, rolled colour and wax pencil and is always looking for the ‘happy accident’. The monotype is another favourite medium. As with his etchings Robert’s monotypes often speak of his long association and history in theatre.
