ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

T

he Alice Springs Pride Carnivale Organising Committee acknowledges the Central Arrernte people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of Mparntwe Alice Springs.

We respectfully recognise Elders past and present; and the strength, resilience and capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sistergirl, Brotherboy and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer (LGBTIQ) individuals. We acknowledge the continuing connection to culture, country and community, and that Australia was, is, and always will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land.

CULTURAL PROTOCOL Overall Statement

A

lice Springs Pride Carnivale is about celebrating our diversity and unity, accepting our differences. This means that when you are on our country we welcome you, to enjoy yourself, and participate in what our culture, what our people have to offer. Everyone is welcome! There’s a lot of things that come with respect. Respecting Arrernte land and culture and people while you are here in Arrernte country. It’s about respecting yourself, and respecting others. Alice Springs is growing in awareness and knowledge of the Gay, Lesbian, Trans, Bisexual, Intersex, Queer, Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities. We want this Carnivale to be a safe place for everybody. For straight people – expect to see the diversity and difference within our community. There are some specific things we want to say about the family day and the after party.

Family Day Cultural sensitivity means no sexually explicit themes. It’s a family event, G-rated. There will be cultural tribal elders and families and children, and a live broadcast over the radio on CAAMA.

After Party People keep Men’s and Women’s lore separate – genitals are not to be exposed publicly. We would like to keep public nudity and sexually explicit behaviour until after midnight. Any nudity (revealing genitals or women’s breasts) and sexual performances would only occur after midnight, and will be announced, so people can leave the space if they don’t want to see it. It’s always okay to contact people if you have any questions. You can contact the Sisters and Brothers NT group for any questions on 0487 898 611 or via Facebook.

WELCOME TO THE 2ND ANNUAL ALICE SPRINGS PRIDE CARNIVALE

F

rom last year’s inaugural vibrant, performance-packed fair day, the event has brought out the best in our Sistergirl and Brotherboy; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer (LGBTIQ) community in Central Australia, and we are pleased to bring you Alice Springs Pride Carnivale again!

Australian community to celebrate the unique culture, resilience and pride of the people who live in and around Alice Springs. This even is a fantastic example of what can be achieved by people working together with support from the community! None of this would have been possible without the generous sponsorship and assistance from the many local businesses, services and individuals included in this program. We encourage you to support the people who have supported us.

Our community continues to face discrimination on the basis of race, gender, sex and sexuality, including violence, exclusion and poorer health outcomes. These issues are made worse by social isolation and lack of access to support services for many regional and remote LGBTIQ people.

We hope you enjoy the performances, make new friends, have some tasty treats, laugh at the Camp Dog Show, strut your stuff on the red carpet, get acquainted with some community organisations, get inspired to be involved in your community!

It’s not hard to find an excuse to throw a party in Central Australia, but we hope this event once again goes some way towards addressing this isolation by linking LGBTIQ people together and with local support networks and services.

In this program, you’ll find a feedback form that we encourage you to complete and return, so we know what you think … you could even win a voucher for your comments!

While organising an event of this magnitude across the vast reaches of Central Australia had its logistical challenges, the experience brought together regional and remote LGBTIQ people, strengthening our community and support networks. People who had never previously met have had the chance to work together, form new friendships, learn skills and build confidence.

Thank you for being out today and supporting the Alice Springs Pride Carnivale! Love and solidarity The Alice Springs Pride Carnivale Organising Committee 

Today, we join together with the support of family, friends and the Central ~ 3 ~
